2. Next, make Frankenstein’s bolts by cut ting a thin strip of cardboard about 2 inches wider than the head. Then cut two small rectangles to make the heads of the bolts. Paint them silver then set aside to dry.

This is one of our favorite Halloween events in Tampa Bay because it’s truly one that people of all ages can enjoy, whether you’re attending with a small child or checking it out for date night.
Perfect for ZooTampa’s youngest guests, Manatee Circle is the place where everyone’s favorite storybook villains come to life. Don’t worry: The Fairy Godmother will also be there to keep the mischievousness in check.

Some improvements will be subtle – new signage, new paint, added programming—and some will be very noticeable. At Tampa’s Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), we have had a celebrated (yet, complicated) past over the last 60 years. Thanks to the support of our members and the broader community, we are positioned for another successful 60 as Tampa Bay’s science center. Although President Lincoln may never have actually said the quote famously attributed to him, the sentiment certainly fits for MOSI’s future.Since taking the helm at MOSI and moving to Tampa in June, I have tried to spend much of my time sharing my vision for MOSI’s future with a broad swath of community leaders, and have heard many questions along the way: “Is MOSI moving locations?” “Is the IMAX returning?” “Is MOSI still in business?” Once I answer these questions (No, No, and YES!) the conversation typically turns to what MOSI will look like going forward, and how it compares with what MOSI looks like in people’s memories.

While these projects take shape, MOSI continues to serve fami lies, educators and all sorts of children (and their adults) through programming designed to inspire and engage visitors in all areas of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). Thanks to community-based partnerships, we’ve been able to ex tend “Dinosaurs Around the World” through Jan. 1, and have even more touring exhibitions planned for 2023, including “Wooden Wonders of the World”, an architectural and engineering marvel showcasing models of iconic structures like the Golden Gate Bridge and Washington Monument, all built to scale out of nothing but toothpicks!Ifyou’venever

“We have a butterfly garden in a pot here with at least two host plants for different butterflies, usually a milkweed for monarchs and something for long wing butterflies and two nectar plants,” Cama cho says. “You can do something like that even if it’s on a balcony or front patio. Every little bit helps. Butterfly gardening is chemical free and it’s safe to do. And then you get a lot of movement, and it’s a lot of fun.”

How You Can Help Save the Monarch Butterfly
Anita Camacho, owner of the Little Red Wagon Native Nursery in South Tampa and founder of the Tampa Bay Butterfly Foun dation , says the migrating monarchs meet all criteria to be listed as endangered in the United States by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, but haven’t been listed…yet.
Camacho says factors leading to the collapse in population including climate change, the destruction of habitat due to mowing and herbicides, insecticides and disease.“Ourmonarch butterflies in Florida are very sick,” Camacho says. “There’s a lot of disease here with the introduction of trop ical milkweed being one cause. Another cause is a lot of home rearing; people aren’t testing the butterflies and they’re releasing a lot of sick butterflies unknowingly. They can look very healthy but when you look under a microscope they’re not, so we’re at about an 80% disease rate in Central

You don’t need a big yard to plant a butterfly garden. In fact, you don’t need a yard at all. All it takes is just one pot!

The migratory monarchs are now listed as endangered by the IUCN. These monarchs migrate north after spending the winter in Mexico and, during the spring, make their way to Canada and the northern United States. In the fall, the fourth generation migrates thousands of miles south to Mexico to overwinter for about eight months, and the cycle starts all over again.
Camacho says you should also avoid the temptation to rear monarchs at home.

Despite the confusion and dawning horror, the Sanchez family managed to evacuate their house right away into the frigid night. As they did, the alarms began to go off, and they noticed smoke pouring out from under their house. Within 15 minutes, the block was swarming with firefighters.
It was the night of Gasparilla 2022—the coldest night of the year so far in Tampa Bay. In their South Tampa bungalow, Johanna Sanchez enjoyed a family movie night with her husband and her three sons, Jonathan (then 7) and 4-year-old twins Zac and Xander. A fire crackled cheerfully in their fireplace while they hung out and was completely out by the time the family went to bed.
Remember that if a fire ever does occur in your home, it will not be a calm and leisurely scenario. You will likely be panicked and unable to think clearly. That’s why it’s important to have plans A, B and C ready with your family, as well as a clearly understood meeting place.
If you can’t get out, close the door, get as far away from the fire as possi ble and turn on the light. Use towels or cloths to cover the cracks under the door to prevent smoke from getting inside. If smoke is already com ing in, open the window (starting from the lower pane first), and remain close for fresh air. Stay close to the floor. Call 9-1-1, tell them you cannot get out and use a flashlight or call out to draw firefighters’ attention when they arrive.

“I think maintaining a positive mindset is key,” says Johanna. “We have to find the rainbow at the end of the storm, or it can eat at you in your heart.”
The now 8-year-old had another positive come out of the experience: He received an award from the Tampa Fire Department for his heroic Althoughactions.whathappened to the Sanchez family was almost a fluke, Johanna still thinks its important that people know to inspect their fireplaces regularly and have a plan for if this type of disaster strikes. And if the worst does occur, she says it’s important to get whatever help you need to mentally overcome the aftermath.

Here’s one very simple thing you can do to protect yourself from fire damage: close your door. According to the nonprofit Underwriters Labo ratories, a closed door is one of the most effective mechanisms by which you can prevent death and damage. The organization says that there can be a 900-degree Fahrenheit difference between rooms separated by a closed door. With modern materials being so much more flammable than before, fire can burn quick and hot.
Clean your kitchen stove hood regularly and keep it vented to the outside.

Make sure there is a smoke alarm on every level of the home, and inside and outside each sleeping area. Check them monthly and change batteries on a regular schedule.
The family relocated to a condo for the seven months that it took to repair the damage to their home. It wasn’t easy to watch her sons share an air mattress in a crowded condo, but Johanna initially resisted going back to the scene of the fire. It was her boys’ love for their home that convinced her to make a fresh start there. She did her best to make the return fun for them by buying them new comforters and accessories for their bedrooms and making other changes, such as transforming her office into a bedroom for Jonathan.

But shortly after they had fallen asleep, Johanna was woken up by Jonathan, who said he heard his brothers coughing and saw smoke pouring in from under the door. The couple leaped out of bed.
Later, the Sanchez family learned that the fire was created when that night’s unexpected high winds caused the heat from the furnace to be transferred to a structural wooden beam in the house.
Leave through the closest door, close it behind you and head to your meeting place. Call 9-1-1 right away.
If you can’t get to the door, leave through another exit such as a window. Head to your meeting place, call 9-1-1 and let them know you got out.

You are good at this, and I am not. Train me. I really think we need to shift the way we think about these very ideals. I want more people to understand that diversity in a crew for fire service could be that a team member offers something that the others do not that will make our outcomes better in whatever situation we are in. When it comes to our com munity, I especially want a team to include the people that will meet the needs of those we serve.
BT: Challenge yourselves. If you are a female, and you’ve never seen another female in a job or leadership position that you believe you would be great at, go for it anyway. I like to describe my own life as a maze or an obstacle course. If at any time I’ve felt like I’ve hit a dead end, it’s not that at all! I just back up and go another way.
And along the same lines, for children that don’t see themselves in leadership today but have big dreams for their lives, I want them to know what I tell my grandchildren: dreams do come true, and miracles happen. It all begins with believing in yourself.

TBPM: Given your accomplishments, what is your advice to other women and even children who don’t see themselves in roles they have interests in?
TBPM: Can you share a little bit about your background and how you became involved with the fire department?
BT: I am most proud of my three kids: I have two daughters and one son. I raised them to give back to help kids that didn’t have as much as they did, like the kid who I was in my childhood. From those early days to today, they still make me so proud. I am also proud of my grands, and I hope I inspire them. Finally, I’m proud to overcome so many barriers to lead a 127-year department that is fueled by hard work and determina tion.

When the Mayor approached me to do this job, I could have easily said no. There is no training for this level of leadership or this particular job. I really didn’t know what to expect, but I knew I could try. If the average person says it cannot be done, I want to know where that is written! Show me. TBPM: What is one thing you are most proud of as a mother? A grandmother? A leader?
We live in a time when there is a lot of buzz around DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion), and I’d like to share that diversity is so much

BT: It really didn’t hit me when Mayor Castor swore me in on June 25, 2021. At first I thought, ‘I’m just doing my job, this is just another promo tion.’ Then, a few days later, I was at the airport getting ready to fly out when my son looked at me and said: “Mom, I am so proud of you.” That’s when it hit me. I just made history as a female and as a woman of color. However, I don’t want to be remembered as a Black female Fire Chief. I want my legacy to be great leadership by someone who was a woman, and just happened to be a person of color. Because being a woman doesn’t stop me from doing my job. Being an Afro-American doesn’t stop me from doing my job. Yeah, we know she’s Black, but was she a good leader? I really believe that being a strong leader comes first, and those other identifying characteristics really just enhance the honor.
TBPM: What does it mean to you to be not only the first female fire chief, but also the first woman of color to lead the Tampa Fire Department?
BT: I grew up in East Tampa with my mother, father, sister and brother. We were considered a poor or low-income family. Nonetheless, I gradu ated from high school, and I wanted to study for a career where I could make the most money. I got accepted to USF with the goal to major in computer engineering. I felt like that was where the money was, and I loved math. Considering the way I grew up, I thought money would solve all of my problems. I went for two years, and finally took a math course under the computer engineering studies and realized that one problem consisted of four pages of work. At that point, I needed a change. Well, life happened and made that change for me when I became pregnant with my son at the age of 20. Friends recommended that I look for a job within the fire department. I dismissed it and went into the military in stead. When I returned home, a neighbor of mine urged that I go into the fire service. I told them “No way, I’m not putting out fires! It’s already hot enough in Tampa to begin with!” Eventually, I learned about the benefits and the hours involved, and I became curious. When I called Chief Day for a job, he asked an important question on the phone that I couldn’t answer: What do you know about the fire service? I went in the next day to meet him in-person, and he immediately grabbed my hand to shake it. He shared with me that he often has candidates come in to see him that are not physically capable of the job. After that hand shake, he signed me up, and I became a firefighter for Hillsborough County. I eventually switched over to Tampa Fire Department for benefits that were better for the future of my family.
Tampa Bay is rich in history. The Cuban sandwich was invented in Ybor. Ray Charles got his start playing clubs in the downtown area formerly known as Central Avenue. Even in the past few years, Tampa politicians and sports teams have made history with notable “firsts.” On June 25, 2021, history was made in Tampa once again when Chief Barbara Tripp was sworn in as the first-ever female fire chief for Tampa Fire Rescue. For little girls everywhere, seeing women do things they haven’t done before—especially as hometown heroes—matters. And knowing that she is also one of the most respected, most deserving, and most fun mothers and Nanas there is makes it mean that much more.

EF: A large part of my inspiration came from Christene Worley who started PCAT (Parents and Children Advance Together), a non-profit literacy center that partners with Title 1 schools. I met her while working on my Silver Award in middle school, and she encouraged me to speak at the Hillsborough County Children’s Board, which took my small word of mouth project to an overwhelming community effort. For over 20 years, she has committed to improving literacy skills in young students, and her dedication is inspiring.
TBPM: What are some ways that local authors, book stores and donors can support your efforts?

TBPM: Tell us how you became passionate about service and giving back to the community at such a young age.
EF: My parents have always been volunteers in the community, and being a Girl Scout in Troop 1247 gave me many opportunities to give back. Through the Girl Scouts, I earned my Bronze Award by helping the Humane Society, and for my Silver Award I chose to focus on literacy as I knew there were many children in local schools that didn’t have books to read at home. When researching literacy information, I learned about the importance of being able to read well at an early age, the implications of being illiterate, and just how many children don't own books or have access to books. In middle-income neighborhoods, there are 13 books per child, but in low-income neighborhoods there is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children. Up to 61% of low-income families do not have any books at all in their homes for their kids, which shocked me. I knew I had to try and help communities with this important issue.
TBPM: What is your favorite thing to do outside of Girl Scouts in Tampa Bay?

the YMCA using a simple tote box. By doing this, I collected 7,000 books and donated them to Title 1 schools. The com munity support was overwhelming. When I started working on my Gold Award, I needed to make it more sustainable, so I created a literacy portal website to help parents, students and teachers. To refer people to the website, I collected more books through word of mouth and a community book drive and made a cus tom stamp to mark inside the books encourag ing people to “Read. Share. Repeat.” I collected and stamped over 4,500 books, also donated to Title 1 schools, and I keep ScoutingForBooks. com up to date with community information. I also use Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to help spread literacy awareness. I created a “Book Buddy” program, which was recognized by the Hillsborough County School Board, that encourages reading initiatives at schools and outlines how students/schools can help.
The Girl Scout experience can be incredibly rewarding. Most girls create forever friendships and develop steadfast char acter qualities, and nearly all come to treasure a lifetime worth of Troop memories. However, for 5.4% of members, transformative self-discovery and solution-driven community connection can lead to the highest recognition within the or ganization. Elaine Feaster completed the Gold Award to land amongst other role-models and real-life superheroes who are making the world a better place. Yet, with or without this honor, this Kid to Know is changing the world, and she's only just begun.
Being diagnosed with dyslexia (a reading disability) in third grade helped me understand the importance of being able to read and com prehend, especially in the elementary school years. A student who doesn’t read skillfully by third grade is four times more likely to drop out of school, and it leads to poor outcomes in the future, such as delinquency and unemployment. I remember hearing: Kids first learn to read, then read to learn, so having the foundation of literacy early on is so critical. That’s why I fo cused on Literacy Awareness for my Girl Scout Silver and Gold awards, because everyone needs to understand the significance of making sure all children can read.
EF: I started collecting books from neighbors and friends, then started a book collection at
TBPM: Describe some of the biggest challenges you've faced as you have worked on solutions to advocate for literacy and meet the requirements of the Silver and Gold Awards with the Girl Scouts?
EF: One of my biggest challenges was to make people aware that there are many students in our communities that cannot read and do not have books. I think people assume that just be cause every child goes to school that they can all read, but that’s not the case. Reading is the foundation for learning, which is the basis for my motto: “When you can read, you can learn anything!” Illiteracy is all around us, in both children and adults, and I use many commu nication methods to spread the word, such as the stamp in the donated books, website, social media and my bookmarks and business cards that I give to people I meet. Another challenge was balancing a full course load with AP class es, extracurricular activities and working on my Gold Award. It took 1.5 years and 120 hours to complete, but I’m proud to say that I complet ed my Take Action project in March and have earned my Gold Award.

TBPM: How do you come up with creative ideas to address literacy and book access issues in Hillsborough County?
EF: I really enjoy playing volleyball and have played all four years at Freedom High School. I also love being outdoors, doing anything creative, especially writing poetry, painting and photography, hanging out with my friends, and—of course—reading.
Kids to Know:
EF: They can donate books to family shelters, community centers and schools, and fill book boxes around the community. So many schools not only need books for their classrooms, but for students to have at home. Other ideas can be found on my website ScoutingForBooks.com
TBPM: Your dedication to the community is inspiring, and you are truly a shining example of a great organization. Who inspires you?
It is estimated that as many as 50% of children experience or witness bullying at some point, with approximately 20% experiencing some form of bullying each year. Bullying is defined as when a person is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more people. Bullying may include acts of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, verbal and emotional assault and other behaviors intended to physically or emotional inflict harm on the victim. With increasing access to cell phones, iPads, online gaming and social media, children and youth are increasingly exposed to cyber-bullying.
Bullying can be categorized as direct-physical bullying, direct-verbal bullying, indirect, relational bullying and cyber-bullying.

• Cyber-bullying: may include both verbal and relational bullying and is particularly problematic because, while traditional bullying occurs within the confines of a physical environment such as school or play ground, cyber-bullying can occur at times and places—such as in the home—that are traditionally safe havens.
Research suggests that cyber-bullying may have an even larger influence on an adolescent’s emotional development than conventional bullying because the victim is often unaware of the perpetrator’s identity. How will they get from their home to the grocery store? They discuss the businesses and services their town should have and work together to construct an ideal but functional society.
By asking questions, drawing conclusions and spotting links between what teachers tell them and what they uncover themselves, IB’s littlest students form active learning skills. And then there’s the white rose sitting in a vase, on a small table in a corner of the room. This isn’t just any rose. This is the Peace Rose. It teaches children to resolve their conflict in a calm manner, and often without an adult. Fowler remembers when two little boys got into a disagreement and voices were starting to raise. Instead of it escalating, one of the boys invited the other to the Peace Rose. Whoever holds the rose is allowed to speak. The boys came to an understanding, worked it out and hugged.“Grace and courtesy are major building blocks in Montessori Education,” Fowler explains. “You want to provide an environ ment where students feel safe and where the teacher models a calm environment. That feeling of calm transfers over to learning at another level.”
The Montessori Academy at Essrig Elementary
The first thing you notice when you walk into one of the Montessori classrooms at Essrig Elementary is how calm and quiet itPlentyis. of students roam around, playing and learning, but they’re doing it in a har monious and respectful manner.
The students begin their morning with a three-hour work period. During this period, they select work independently while the teacher observes, giving support if necessary. Fowler says students can dive deeper into their work and gain a more thorough understanding of the lesson because there is no time constraint.
The Montessori Academy at Essrig is a new magnet program for Hillsborough County Public Schools. The Montessori method of education seeks to develop natural interests and activities rather than use formal teaching methods. It empha sizes independence and believes children, especially young children, are capable of muchKimberleemore.
For example, to get someone’s attention, there’s no “excuse me,” interruptions or screaming across the room for a teacher. The student will go up to the teacher or a classmate and gently put their hand on their shoulder. Then they wait patiently for acknowledgement.“Thisisawayofinterrupting with grace and courtesy,” Fowler says. “Think of the

MR: What can we do to promote mental health well-being in our children?
MR: What are helpful activities to do during a mental health day?
DR. A: The goal is to minimize tasks and take the time to pause, breathe, clear one’s mind. Suggestions can include engaging in relaxing activities, sleeping in, going to lunch or taking a walk with a parent. Also, it can be helpful to take some time to reflect on what contributed to the feelings that precipitated the need for a mental health day. This can then allow for some type of change that could be helpful in the future (for example, the need to consistently get to sleep earlier, or the need to buy an agenda to write down homework).
MR: What are the benefits of taking mental health days?
Missing School for a Mental Health Day

Would you allow your child to be absent from school for a mental health day? The answer was a resounding yes when I posed the question to a “moms panel” on a recent edition of my parenting seg ment, “Maggie and the Moms” on Daytime. We agreed that, while we don’t condone school absence willy-nilly, we’re on board with giving our chil dren a mental break when necessary. Renowned Tampa Bay Child Psychologist, Dr. Maria Aranda, notes that 50 percent of all lifetime mental health illnesses start by the adolescent years. She sup ports taking a mental health day to “pause, regroup, clear your mind and process your emotions.”
MR: What do you say to the parent who is against missing school for mental health days because “that’s what weekends are for.”
DR. A: Mental health does not distin guish between the days of the week, as it is similar to physical health. When you are physically sick on Monday, you likely will not wait until Saturday to take actions to improve your health. You will take Monday or Tuesday off; you will take medicine on Monday or Tuesday and visit your physician. The same can be said for acute mental health struggles: It will be more helpful to address the issue that day to prevent an escalation and deterioration of mental health.
MR: What are some mental health issues that are prevalent during the school year and why?
DR. A: Viewing physical health and mental health on similar, parallel tracks can be useful. We all know that there are many behaviors that help us maintain good physical health, such as wash ing our hands, taking vitamins, eating fruits and vegetables, getting exercise, getting our vaccinations. Similarly, there are many behaviors have been shown to help with maintaining good mental health. These include being able to name and talk about our emotions with trusted adults, engaging in exercise, spending time with friends, engaging in meaningful activities or hobbies, and sitting down to dinner 3-4 times a week with family members. We also know that not getting enough sleep will negatively affect emotional regulation in kids and teens, so 8-9 hours of sleep is strongly recommended. Kids and teens also need down time to reset and recharge. It’s the chronically over-scheduled and stressedout teens that are at high risk for mental health deterioration.

DR. A: Predominantly, feelings of stress, anxiety and feeling overwhelmed. Teens will say they feel like they are drowning in responsibilities, tasks, emotions and social situations. Stress increases expo nentially at the onset of the school year, due to social and academic pressures.
DR. A: Many kids are stressed and overwhelmed and are not sleeping enough. A stressed brain cannot learn as efficiently as a brain that is in a state of calmness. A stressed brain is operating in a fight, flight or freeze mode. Mental health days allow children to rest and reset so that they can come back to school feeling less overwhelmed, which will ultimately help them learn.

As instructed, I reached out to my gynecologist. Scheduling appoint ments with physicians I needed was difficult. I wanted immediate solutions, which wasn’t realistic. I accepted the diagnosis; I wanted the cancer out. Mostly, I felt lost receiving the news over the phone and without an accompanying action
TBPM: Is there a family history of breast cancer?

In Portuguese I told our son, Mat teo (then 5), “Mommy has a dodói.” A boo-boo. I explained I needed surgery and wouldn’t be able to carry him. He’d just started pre-K, and I didn’t want to miss out. I

MT: My paternal aunt had breast cancer and died at 40. During my breast cancer experience, memo ries of my aunt’s journey surfaced.
MT: A Friday afternoon phone call. I was suspicious and anxious: “You have early-stage breast cancer,” the radiologist said. My husband, a physician who works nights, was asleep. I didn’t wake Al up until I had a plan.

Shortly after her 49th birthday (2019), Melissa Thomas, a pediatric critical care physician, a wife, a mother, a sister, a daughter, a friend—was diagnosed with breast cancer: carcinoma in situ. Life altering and lifesaving choices let her share her story. And, most importantly, share her life—one exemplifying that, through resolve and resilience, things really are as they should be.
TBPM: Take me through receiving the news?

Friendsplan.from New Jersey were visiting and offered a welcome distraction. I didn’t tell my daugh ter, Julia (then 20), as her dad was undergoing treatment for aggres sive colon cancer. I waited until the week of my surgery to share the news because I needed her to know I’d be fine—that she wouldn’t lose both parents.
Trusting things are as shouldtheybe.
MT: My annual mammogram showed a change. I underwent a second mammogram, then an ultrasound, and finally a punch needle biopsy. After the biopsy results, I heard the word cancer.
For six-plus weeks, I had to keep my arms down. I couldn’t shower. My sister would hold my head in the sink and wash my hair. I couldn’t drive, so she took over with Matteo. After recovery, I was physically deconditioned.
As a physician, I’ve seen too many times when a lumpectomy wasn’t enough. Doing everything at once remains the right decision for me.
MT: My family. I couldn’t do anything for myself. Knowing they were present was comforting.
Because of the setback, my recon structive surgery didn’t happen until Jan. 16, 2020—fortunately, just before COVID would have delayed it even more.
TBPM: Did you spend a lot of time researching the options available to you?
TBPM: Were there any other unanticipated challenges?
TBPM: What was your greatest source of support during recovery?
MT: The first surgery was on Oct. 16 –a month after the diagnosis. I chose a nipple sparing double mastectomy with follow up reconstructive surgery. All breast tissue and muscle as well as some lymph nodes were removed. Af ter an overnight stay, I was discharged with breast expanders and four drains. Weekly, to stretch the skin, saline was inserted through a port. Since caught early enough, neither chemo nor radia tion were needed.
MT: No. I trusted my physicians, Drs. Gabordi and Brown. I always knew I’d choose a double mastectomy. I wasn’t concerned with aesthetics. I was con cerned with seeing my children grow. My husband supported me—encour aging me that it was my body and my decision. I connected with my sister-inlaw’s friend, a breast cancer survivor, and she was a wonderful resource.
MT: Attaining a medical leave—under standing what I needed to disclose.
Trust that things are as they should be because you are doing what you should be. Have the resolve to take care of yourself so that you can share a long, resilient life with your children. While things are going well, be resolute in scheduling a mammogram. Tell your girlfriends to do it, too.
The More You Know
My mom, Eliana, and sister, Karyna (who left her husband and daugh ters to help me), flew from Brazil and stayed with me 40 days post op. Julia, then in college, helped too. Al contin ued working but made every effort to attend appointments. Rosy, my sisterin-law, was instrumental.
MT: Life is short. Every day, I tell people how I feel.
A complication on Nov. 4 traumatized me. Al was leaving for work when I felt a pop on my right breast. There was blood everywhere. I fainted on the drive to the ER. I thought I was going to die. After the first surgery, I came home with enough narcotics to sedate the world and took none; this pain was intolerable. Due to the arterial bleed, the right breast was redone.

MT: Find your support system. Rely on family and friends. Make decisions that fit you, not anyone else.
The night before the first surgery, I wondered about them finding more cancer once they operated. I started writing that night and, through tears, wrote a message for everyone in my family. If something were to happen, what did I want them to know? I wanted to leave them writing they could cherish. Thankfully, it’s saved for them to read…some other day.

the diagnosis was easier than dealing with insurance. Regard less of coverage, I paid $18,000 out of pocket. Insurance and associated issues were obstacles.
TBPM: What was the treatment process like?
Breast cancer groups and therapists were offered, but my determination helped me push past the diagnosis and treatment phases. Early detection helped me trust I’d be okay. I can’t imagine diagnosis at later stages. For my kids, I had to be strong.

GRADUATION DAY
While Hailey still has a long road ahead, walking the stage was a journey of joy.
On a June 2021 night, Hailey came home like on any other day. But around 1 a.m., Hailey’s sister Natalie discovered her crying and went to awaken their mother, Robin, who called 9-1-1.
After 12 weeks, Hailey transferred to the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, a non-profit institution affiliated with Johns Hopkins that specializes in care and research focused on pediatric developmental disabilities and disorders of the brain, spinal cord and musculoskeletal system. In Baltimore, fluid began to build on Hailey’s brain, so she received surgical care at The Johns Hopkins Hospital before returning to Kennedy Krieger. In November, she returned home and began receiving care four days a week at Johns Hopkins All Children’s for several hours with speech, physical and occupational therapy.
Hailey, who had no previous medical conditions, was taken to a local trauma center where they discovered a spontaneous brain bleed. She lost all mobility, speech and cognitive ability.

But the work can be frustrating. Progress is slow. Still, Hailey pushes through. Having a clear goal helped her dig deep.
“I think that was definitely like a huge mo tivator for her on those longer days where she was like, I'm exhausted,” says Lisenbee, who started shadowing physical therapists at the hospital in college and will complete her third year as a full-time employee this fall.“She has an amazing support system. That, coupled with the fact she was motivated about doing something, has really gotten her through some of those sticking points.”
