for the best emergency care. When my daughters suffered serious injuries while speed skating, I made sure they were both treated at the Steinbrenner Emergency/Trauma Center at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. The nurses and doctors were confident and reassuring, putting my family at ease. Thanks to them, both girls will be skating circles around me for years to come. For that, I’m very grateful.

From the editor

This month is dedicated to embracing the newness of the season and the best parts of ourselves as we ease into fall. I hope that going back to school was a breeze for you and the kids. Hopefully, you’re not still spinning from all of the school shopping, physical exams and health shots. Being able to adapt to change is important. Change allows us the opportunity to learn new things, tackle new challenges and find fresh solutions. As our children adapt to new teachers and subjects and possibly new schools and new friends, they are gaining a skill that will serve them well in life.

Me with ABC Ac tion News anch or

Deiah Riley

The same is true for us parents. As we watch our children grow, we must adapt, too, as they go from little kids to occasionally grumpy teenagers (we never said change was easy) to independent individuals. Not to mention the changes in our own lives – perhaps a modified diet or a new house or job. Welcoming the changes gracefully is always the goal. Speaking of grace, I’ll be embarking on a new challenge in the form of a tango or two-step. On Sept. 11, I will be in Tampa Bay’s Dancing With the Stars 2010. I’ve been practicing and coached by a fantastic dancer, Lino, and have been introduced to muscles in my body that I never knew existed. It’s been fun and it’s all for a great cause as proceeds benefit the Kid’s Charity of Tampa Bay, Moffitt Cancer Center and Pepin Heart Hospital. Please mark your calendars for the event at the Pepin Hospitality Centre, and of course, vote for yours truly. I hope you’ve enjoyed watching Parents in Action, my co-hosted segment with ABC Action News anchors and reporters. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, be sure to tune in Thursdays at noon or Saturdays at 9 a.m. May the newness of the fall season bring positive changes for you and your family.

s a photographer, I’m always asked, “Why do all of the children you photograph look so happy and natural?” No, I don’t drug them, and no, the people on my website are not paid models. I simply talk with my clients ahead of time to prepare them for their session. So I thought I would share some secrets on how you can prepare your child for her next portrait session.

BY Jeanine mcLeod

secrets to BeautiFuL Portraits

You also need to think about the time of day. Just because a time is convenient for you, does not mean it is a good time for your child. Do not schedule your child’s portrait session during a regularly scheduled nap. If you want your photographer to curse your name, bring her a child who is ready to take a nap and say “he is really tired, and cranky, but I am sure you can make him smile.”

etc. Personally, I think the word cheese should be forbidden. So don’t use it. Lastly, here are some things that should be obvious, but I will point out them out. ‘ Don’t get your child’s vaccinations the day of your portrait session.

During the session, the less you engage the child the better. Let your photographer do his job. He needs to build rapport with your child to get her to look in the right direction, give the right expressions, etc. You are hiring a professional. The more you interfere, the harder it is for your photographer to create an amazing portrait for you. Please, do not yell at your child. Just because he isn’t smiling at the beginning of a session, does not mean your photographer isn’t capturing beautiful images. Besides, do you really think yelling is going to miraculously cause your child to giggle and produce that smile? Control your emotions and take a few steps back. The same goes for bribery. If you start offering bribes right at the beginning, you leave your photographer no place to go with the session. I have thought about putting up a jar that says: “If you use the word cheese in my studio, put $1 here.” Don’t tell your child to say cheese. There is nothing

Preparing for a portrait session can be stressful. Believe me I know. Between getting myself and my daughter ready, all while having a tug of war about what she’ll wear (no sweetie, you can’t wear your nightgown), making sure everyone has been to the potty and telling my husband he better enjoy himself, it’s a feat just to get out the door. So grab a cup of coffee and take my advice. You can thank me later.

Don’t drive to the photographer’s studio or location with your child in their outfit. Car seats cause wrinkles. Spills and stains can happen too easily. Don’t bring your child to the photographer with temporary tattoos on his arms. Don’t put sparkles or fairy dust on your daughters. They look like blank pixels on your image and have to be retouched out. Don’t make your child wear something itchy and expect her not to scratch or complain. I know many parents work and scheduling a session in the evening is convenient but remember the session is about your child. If your child is cranky and ready for dinner or a bath, he is not going to be a happy camper for a portrait session. I hope this helps you plan for your next portrait session. I will leave you with one final tidbit. Your child can pick up on your mood. If you are stressed about the session, she will react to that. Stay relaxed, be extra happy that day and remember children are full of personality if we just let them be children.

Please, I beg you, think about the clothing. So many times, I have clients who wait until the last minute and then put their child in white shirts and jeans. If you want your child’s portrait to be unique and a representation of him, find some color somewhere. White shirts have no personality and most of us do not have the skin tones to wear white. You will be much happier with your portraits if you take the time to find adorable clothing. If your child is like mine and wakes up one morning deciding there is no way you are putting that dress on her, then you need to begin preparing a few days ahead of your session. Hang the outfit on the outside of her closet and begin building excitement about the portrait outfit. Soon, she’ll be asking you when she gets to wear her special clothes.

Performing arts nurture children’s mind, body and spirit

W

hat could be cuter than a young performer belting out a song or dancing across a stage? For parents, those pride-filled moments are unforgettable. Early engagement in the arts – visual and performing – fosters a child’s cognitive, motor, language, social and emotional development. If your child shows an early yearning for the spotlight, nurture and let your child enjoy her newfound interest. Whether learning voice or movement, theater or visual art, parents should look for age appropriate training and pick instructors who understand that pushing children too early and too strenuously can cause physical and mental damage. The Patel Conservatory’s training programs begin slowly, with toddler classes that focus on developing the children’s natural talents. As your child begins to craft and hone his skills, there are classes for prekindergarteners to high school seniors to allow him to grow and learn more. The arts serve as a critical component to

a complete education and are proven to increase student academic achievement. Studies show that young people who consistently participate in comprehensive, sequential and rigorous arts programs are: Four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement Three times more likely to be elected to class office within their schools Four times more likely to participate in a math and science fair Three times more likely to win an award for school attendance Four times more likely to win an award for writing an essay or poem How can parents be sure they’re getting the best training? Nancy Garma, a vocal coach at the Patel Conservatory suggests speaking with a schoolteacher or a doctor for a recommendation. Parents also can seek recommendations from friends and family. Well-designed and executed arts education, like the Patel Conservatory’s, leads to overall improved academic performance, builds skills necessary for success and has a positive influence on the lives of students. In addition, research has shown that access to and participation in quality arts programs helps decrease and prevent negative behavior by at-risk youth. “Make sure it looks like the lesson is appropriate, rather than overwhelming, for the majority of the class,” says Melissa Stafford, dance program manager at the Patel Conservatory. “Instructors should be correcting every student in the class, not just

focusing on a couple who are doing well.” The Patel Conservatory’s faculty of professional teachers and performers is not only trained to facilitate each child’s specific needs but is also there to make sure everyone learns and grows in a safe, fun environment. In Tampa, we are lucky enough to have cultural establishments, including the David A. Straz Center for the Performing Arts, home of the Patel Conservatory, that help the arts thrive. So this new school year, explore some of your child’s hidden talents and nurture them. Your child could be tomorrow’s superstar.

homework wars

............................ BY mark heLLer

even eXPerts don’t agree on whether it’s necessarY

T

he new school year has begun and in millions of homes across the country so have the homework wars, those almost nightly battles between parents and children, between expectation and experience, between philosophy and reality. Does homework help kids learn? How much is too much? What happened to the freedom to enjoy childhood and to develop talents, interests and even patterns of imagination? What about intrusions into what otherwise could be meaningful family time? While answers to these questions are elusive, they also reflect a debate that has raged throughout educational circles for the past two decades. On one hand, many professors, researchers and theorists hold that homework in the elementary years is at best only marginally helpful to student learning and achievement. On the other hand, public policy-makers are very wary about heeding the research and seeming to be soft on academic rigor. I would caution parents to be careful about equating lots of homework with academic strength because quality matters more than quantity. I’ve worked with great teachers who assign huge amounts of homework and great teachers who assign very little homework. I’ve also worked with ineffective teachers who assign huge amounts of homework and ineffective teachers who assign very little homework. What’s most important is that the homework

engages the child to learn outside of school. Writer Daniel Pink has studied motivation and has concluded that autonomy, mastery and purpose are the key for all learners to really become engaged with whatever they are trying to learn. If we have some control over the tasks, if it’s clear to us that we can improve our skills or performance by doing the work and if the work has meaning to us, it is likely that we will be motivated to do it. Here’s Pink’s recipe for effective homework assignments. Does the assignment offer students some autonomy over how and when to do this work? Does the assignment promote mastery by offering a novel, engaging task (as opposed to reformulation of something already covered in class)? Do the students understand the purpose of the assignment? That is, can they see how doing this additional activity at home contributes to the larger enterprise in which the class is engaged? If teachers ask themselves these questions as they are composing assignments, they and their students will likely reap the rewards that come from great student engagement. Purposeful homework can include introducing new content, practicing a skill that students can do independently but not yet fluently, such as math facts, or providing opportunities to elaborate on or explore topics covered in class. The 10-minute rule is a good rule of thumb. It holds that an appropriate number of minutes for a child to spend on homework (outside of reading) is 10 minutes times the student’s grade. For example, second graders should

spend about 20 minutes per night doing homework, fourth graders 40 minutes and so on. Parental involvement is positive if it is interactive. Parents should be given clear guidelines that spell out their role. Teachers should not expect parents to act as experts regarding content or as teachers of the content. Parents can be helpful if they ask questions that help students clarify or summarize what they have learned. Assignments that require children to explain their written work or other products completed at school to their parents or that require students to interview their parents about their experience or opinions have the potential to be very positive. Many of these assignments cause students and their parents to engage in conversations that relate to the academic curricula, thus extending the learning. They also can produce genuine conversations that feel more natural and less like schooling. Too much homework, especially complianceoriented assignments that do not provide some measure of autonomy, mastery and purpose can be counterproductive to learning. There’s a debate because there are no easy solutions to the homework dilemma. I do believe in homework, but I also advocate for a more thoughtful and deliberate approach. Mark Heller is head of school at Academy at the Lakes, a Pre-K3 - 12th grade independent school in Land O’Lakes that serves families from Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, and Hernando counties. Since that time my daughter has made a complete turn around and has gone from D’s and C’s to all A’s and one B. My daughter now possesses all the skills she needs in every class, especially in math and reading to becoming a straight A student. Thank you again.

......................................................................

Hatching Up Fun

Seven baby Caribbean flamingos have hatched at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay since June. The babies are on display along with about 125 adult flamingos in the Bird Gardens area of the park. As these babies prove, newly hatched chicks are not pink, but in fact have gray or white down feathers. Their pink coloring comes from the carotenoid pigments they consume as part of their diet. They won’t lose all of their darker feathers for a few years. Flamingos have long resided at Busch Gardens. Their bright color and gentle nature have made them a favorite of park guests for many years. Visit www.buschgardens.com to see admission prices and hours.

Kids Are Heroes

St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital is kicking off its 14th annual Kids are Heroes campaign and is accepting nominations of kids who go above and beyond the ordinary. Since 1996, the Kids are Heroes program has recognized more than 1,000 children ages 5-18 from Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk counties who have performed heroic deeds, displayed acts of selflessness and demonstrated good citizenship during the past year. The winners will be selected by a panel of judges that includes current and past pediatric patients at the hospital along with Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos. The hospital will hold a special ceremony for nominees, winners and their families at the end of the year. Call 813-870-5437 or visit www.stjosephschildrens.com to get a nomination form.

Tampa Bay’s Dancing with the Stars

Cheer on local celebrities, including our editor Angela Ardolino, and support local charities during Tampa Bay’s Dancing with the Stars 2010. Coached by award-winning instructors from the Fred Astaire Dance Studios Tampa Bay, Ardolino, Brooke Palmer, Tina Clayton, Chuck Henson, Roy Naccour, Jessica Schwarzkopf, Dean Burnetti, Meredith Walusek and more will strut their stuff on Sept. 11 at the Pepin Hospitality Centre, 4121 N. 50th St. Proceeds from the event will support the Kid’s Charity of Tampa Bay, Moffitt Cancer Center and Pepin Heart Hospital. A cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m. with doors opening for the event at 7 p.m. Tickets start at $75 for gallery seating and $150 for ballroom seating, which includes one general competition vote. Contact Melissa Johnson at Melissa@handsacrossthebay.com or visit www.dancingforcharity.com to purchase tickets.

Be More Awards

Do you volunteer with a standout nonprofit organization that deserves recognition? Well, through Nov. 12, WEDU, west central Florida’s leading PBS station and public media company, is accepting applications from nonprofit organizations large and small throughout the Florida Suncoast for the WEDU Be More Awards. A nationally-recognized, awards-winning program, the WEDU Be More Awards generates awareness for nonprofit organizations and celebrates the spirit of goodwill throughout the community. Nominees should highlight their outstanding achievements from Sept. 1, 2009 through Aug. 30. There is no charge to participate, and honors will be bestowed at the Jan. 13 WEDU Be More Awards ceremony and luncheon. The WEDU Be More Awards application and nomination information can be found at wedu.org/bemore or by calling 800-354-9338, Ext. 2241.

Ode to Fido

The American Pet Products Association is accepting poems for the third annual APPA National Children’s Pet Poetry Contest through its public awareness campaign, Pets Add Life. “Our goal with the Pets Add Life campaign is to help engage our nation’s youth in the joys and benefits of pet ownership,” says APPA president Bob Vetere Third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students are invited to write a poem about their pets − what they love about them, the joys they bring − and post it online at www.petsaddlife.org or mail the poem and submission form to: Pets Add Life, 45 Winter St., Reno, NV 89503. Deadline is Jan. 31 at 5 p.m. Two students from each grade level will win a $250 gift certificate for pet products and a byline in a nationally-circulated publication. In addition, the six winning students’ classrooms will each receive a $1,000 scholarship to spend on pet-related education.

ask what are you? discover what You couLd Become

S

o, I wouldn’t want to repeat my high school years. I wouldn’t go back to that awkward stage when I was faking my way of talking, behaving and associating to pass as one of the in-crowd. Suppressing my interests, values and ideas so as not to stand out.

Actually, I’m amazed that any adolescent comes out of that tunnel with a solid sense of who they are. While most of us do, for some it takes many more years to attain a healthy level of self-comfort. Developing a positive identity is the foundation for everything from how confidently we pursue our dreams to how well we engage and sustain healthy friendships, intimate partnerships and family ties. Even our business ventures, stress levels and health as we age depend, in part, on how secure and happy we are with ourselves. Now back to high school. I recently visited my son’s school for a day. While I enjoyed nearly every one of his subjects and teachers, my favorite class was art. The students are replicating a fascinating exhibit created by California photographer Kip Fulbeck. He is multiracial – Chinese and other nationalities and ethnicities. Hawaiians call such people Hapas, persons of mixed racial heritage who have partial roots in Asia and/or Pacific Islander ancestry. Kip recalls a difficult childhood, challenged by the ignorance, discomfort and hostility directed toward him by his Caucasian peers. Today, his diverse gene pool is a matter of personal pride. Kip invited Hapas from across the United States to have their picture taken and to compose up to a half-page of text in answer to the question, what are you? About 1,200 individuals participated. They were all photographed as bare-shouldered mug shots, without hats, eyeglasses, makeup or jewelry. The resulting exhibit and book is called “Part Asian, 100% Hapa.” It’s one of the most engrossing, affecting and provocative psychological art projects I have ever seen. My son’s teacher encouraged the parents to get photographed, identify our ethnic heritage – Polish and Austrian – and answer the question, what are you? The

students will try to match the answers to the parent’s picture. Some of my classmates-for-an-hour wrote long personal statements. I kept mine short. I am all that I am and all that I believe. I have dreams. For the next two days, my thoughts kept returning to this simple and simply stunning exercise in selfrevelation. I started thinking of all the possible ways people might choose to identify themselves and I realized that my point of reference could be completely different from my neighbor’s. I started listing all the ways that people might use to identify themselves. Here, then, is a quick tour through the human race, one identity grouping at a time. Ethnicity or race is an obvious category that sometimes unites, sometimes unties us. Families, communities and nations have organized in proud determination to honor and promote their ethnic identity. At the same time, wars have been fought between and within families, communities and nations intolerant of racial diversity and coexistence. Religion is another of the more obvious group identifiers. How about place? Proud to be a Southerner, a Midwesterner, a New Yorker, an Alaskan Native? In this nation of immigrants, new citizens may find common ground with each other’s stories, language and cultural heritage. Maybe you identify yourself first in your work role. My professional colleagues come from every race, place and religious faith on the planet. We all have abilities that mark our areas of strength. At the same time, most of us achieve despite a weakness or disability in one or more physical, intellectual, emotional or social skills. How about some alternative identifications? School for example. I feel akin to anyone who attended my high school or college. Alumni networks are some of the most loyal associations I have ever observed. Membership affords everything from advantage in job hiring to shopping discounts to invitation into social networks. Other folks may identify themselves most strongly with their military service, income level, marital

status, parentage or birth order. Don’t laugh too loudly when I list a few other possibilities for self-definition. Our friendships, for example. Oscar Wilde famously pronounced “Show me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are.” Beliefs or ideologies may also join or separate principled folks from all walks of life. Persons who participated in the same life-or-earth-shattering experience feel joined forever by the memory of the moment they once shared – a hurricane, a battle, a depression, a fire, a Stanley Cup win. Our hobbies, our passions and our fetishes, whether for art, music, sports, shoes or community service, can give defining meaning to our lives and our sense of existence and purpose. Sadly, there are those who try to erase their identity in hopes of finding, in anonymity, protection from past victimization at the hands of violence, abuse or psychological torture. I encourage you to add to my list of things real and imagined that serve to give us a sense of personal and group identity. In the end, this exercise reminds me that every person is unique and all people are a lovely mixture of many influences. These traits that we share with others and declare as our own make us identifiable to those seeking our particular abilities, interests or history. Yet we are never just what we appear to be. We can be identified but we must never be labeled. Labels are boxes that limit people’s knowledge and understanding of us and can be used to prejudice, diminish and exclude. When we accept our labels, we risk limiting our dreams, expectations and opportunities. What are you? Answering this question reinforces the importance of knowing yourself by acknowledging all the parts of your identity. With such personal insight securely tucked in your pocket, you will be able to fully engage with another person. Dr. Peter A. Gorski is the director of research and innovation at the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County and professor of pediatrics, public health and psychiatry at the University of South Florida.

ow that the frenzy of preparing to send the kids back to school has ended, parents may be breathing a little easier.

meals. Giving the Chips Ahoy cookies the heave-ho, opens the door to nutritious and delicious alternatives such as apple slices with caramel dip, reduced fat cheese sticks and veggies with ranch dip.

What parents often fail to consider is that children need more than the items in their backpacks to succeed in the classroom. And nothing contributes more to a child’s ability to learn than the combination of a healthy diet, daily exercise and adequate sleep. These healthy habits coupled with a diet rich in protein − low sodium/low-fat meats, reduced fat cheese and low-fat dairy products − and whole grains boosts a child’s ability to concentrate, solve problems and think creatively at school.

The connection between a healthy diet and a child’s academic success is even more striking when children frequently eat meals with their families. These children tend to consume more fruits and vegetables and eat fewer snacks than those who eat on their own. High school seniors who frequently eat meals with their families have been shown to score higher on academic placement tests, more often describe themselves as “happy” and, according to a University of Michigan study, are less likely to use illicit drugs than their counterparts who routinely eat on their own. Regularly sitting down to meals together gives family members an opportunity to share daily activities and become more emotionally connected to each other. Along the way, children are developing a healthy attitude toward food.

Carefully managing a child’s diet seems like a daunting task, but it’s as simple as making a commitment to eating at home more often. After all, parents select the groceries that are brought into the home and control the foods that are available for snacks and

Providing more nutritious foods for children and eating meals as a family require some planning, but it’s well worth the effort. Encouraging family members to help with grocery shopping and meal preparation will help keep everyone on track. The goal is the keep food selections low in fat, sodium and carbohydrates and rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Lean protein should be a staple of every growing child’s diet. As parents, it is easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of back-to-school shopping. Remember that nothing will contribute more to your child’s success at school this year than a commitment to sending him off each day with a healthy mind and body. Dr. Cesar A. Extraordinary woman

Mastering the art of motherhood, work and community.

...............................................................................

BY angeLa ardoLino and carrie Franicisco Darcie Glazer Kassewitz is passionate about helping others. As co-president of the Glazer Family Foundation, established in 1999, she is dedicated to improving the lives of residents across the Tampa Bay area. The foundation is dedicated to assisting charitable and educational causes in the West Central Florida region. It works with youth and families to help identify and create programs that support positive social and economic development within our communities. Since its inception, the Foundation has given millions in programs, grants, tickets and merchandise to the Tampa Bay area. One of her proudest achievements is the Glazer Children’s Museum in Tampa, which is set to open Sept. 25. The foundation donated $5 million to help build the museum. It’s also no surprise that one of Kassewitz’s passions is football. She has also been very active in the community in both the Tampa and West Palm Beach communities. Prior to every home game, she meets with the children as part of the Foundation’s Gameday for Kids program. As part of the program, the Foundation hosts 100 Gameday for Kids at Raymond James Stadium. More than 8,000 youth representing over 100 organizations from the Bay area have been rewarded for academic achievement and positive behavior with free game tickets, food vouchers and car flags. The youth receive this privilege based on achieving goals of incentive programs implemented by community agencies. In addition to her responsibilities with the Glazer Family Foundation, she serves as CoChairwoman of the Make a Wish Foundation in Palm Beach. Glazer Kassewitz also serves on the Board of Manchester United Soccer Club, which has captured three titles since the Glazer family took over the club: two consecutive Premier League titles (2007 and

2008), as well as the 2008 Champions League title. A Rochester, NY, native, Kassewitz attended American University in Washington and went on to graduate from Suffolk Law School in Boston. Besides working passionately with her family’s foundation, Kassewitz loves to spend time with her loving husband and three children.

What is the secret to your success?

I would say just plowing ahead. I think any successful person faces obstacles. Everybody sees the end result, but they don’t realize all the obstacles that had to be plowed through to get to success.

What is your biggest fear?

I can’t say what my biggest fear is, but I do know that you must face your fears. When I have faced fears, it always was exhilarating. I’m a better person because of it.

What advice would you give to other women?

Stay true to yourself. I think that any decision based on that is a decision you won’t regret.

What is your proudest moment?

My proudest moment would be having my three kids. I would say every child is a proud moment.

What is your biggest achievement?

Creating a truly happy home. I think for my husband and my children it’s a very happy place to be.

What are they joys and challenges of motherhood? I love everything about it, as any mother could say. It’s a joy. The biggest challenge – sleep deprivation.

What makes you happy?

My work with the Glazer Family Foundation.

Helping people in need is very rewarding. Getting to know the people we are helping is very rewarding. It’s also great being with my family, my husband and my children. It’s the best place to be.

How do you relax and take time for yourself?

I do yoga and my husband and I like to go running together.

What message would you give women?

Whatever your motto is in life impart that on your children so that they can have the benefit of your advice throughout their life.

What else would you like to share with our readers?

Being a mother is wonderful, as any mother knows. We are all very lucky. As far as work, there is no greater job in the world than what I do helping people in Tampa and surrounding areas. It’s a true joy.

How do you enjoy or draw information from the magazine? I love the magazine. It’s a great magazine and full of information. It’s very interesting and I love it.

What is your favorite thing to do with your kids? We always love to go to Busch Gardens. We love the aquarium. We love anything related to football, of course. It’s number one for us. I can’t wait to take the kids to the Glazer Children’s Museum. We are going to be there a lot.

What is your biggest inspiration or role model? My biggest role model would be my mother. She had six kids in nine years and she cooked meals for eight every night. And she did it all by herself. She gave us a great childhood, an idyllic childhood.

YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Efforts Get Boost The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently awarded the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA a grant to help the organization expand its diabetes prevention efforts. The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA is one of 11 nationally who received the CDC funding to launch or expand the Diabetes Prevention Program in their communities. The program became available to Hillsborough County community members in August. “Providing support and opportunities that empower people to be healthy and live well is part of the YMCA’s charitable purpose,” says Mo Chiodini, Tampa YMCA associate vice president for membership and programs. “The lifestyle choices learned through the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program not only reduce risk for type 2 diabetes but also create lifelong changes in the way that individuals approach health and well being.” The goal of the YMCA’s program is to reduce and maintain individual weight loss by at least 7 percent and to increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week. In a group setting, a trained lifestyle coach helps participants learn skills for healthier lifestyles by teaching healthy eating, increasing physical activity and other behavior modifications over the course of 16 core sessions. After the initial sessions, participants meet monthly for up to a year for added support to maintain their lifestyle changes. “Diabetes is a disease that slowly diminishes an individual’s quality of life,” says Shera Goode, coordinator of the YMCA’s program. “Diabetes is now the leading cause of new cases of blindness and kidney failure. It can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, and can even result in limb amputations. But, there is hope. Pre-diabetes individuals can significantly reduce their risk of having diabetes by making healthy lifestyle changes.”

Odessa Family Helps Keep Hillsborough Beautiful Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful recently honored the Haines family of Odessa, Charles, Carolyn and daughters Courtney and Emma, for their work with the nonprofit organization’s education and outreach programs.

For the Haineses, keeping Hillsborough beautiful is truly a family affair.

The Haineses were among individuals, groups and businesses in the Tampa Bay area honored for their community improvement efforts at a luncheon last month.

The Haineses received a Volunteer Recognition award for their contributions, including assisting with the promotion of the organization’s mascot, Pete the Pelican Pirate, introducing Pete to almost 10,000 Florida residents at Tampa Bay Rays and Tampa Bay Lightning games during the past year. The Haineses have also helped encourage recycling at Tropicana Field and at the St. Pete Times Forum. Charles performs as the mascot at outreach events while wife Carolyn has filled the role of Pete during school presentations. Courtney and Emma regularly assist during the mascot’s presentations and event appearances. Others honored included the Florida Aquarium, Tampa Girl Scout Rowan Wilson, the American Youth Academy and MOSI Conservation Coordinator Carolyn Rhodes, among others. Visit www.khcbonline.org to learn more about the organization and its mission to promote recycling and conservation.

Celebrate High Holidays for Free Chabad Jewish Center of Greater St. Petersburg will be offering free services for the Jewish High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. In response to the growing number of Jews not taking part in High Holiday services due to cost of services or no affiliation with a particular synagogue, the local branch of the largest Jewish outreach organization in the world wanted to offer an alternative geared to Jews of all backgrounds. The Center will be holding Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services this year at the Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront at 333 First St. S. There is no charge, membership or tickets required for services but donations are welcomed. This year, Rosh Hashanah begins Sept. 8 after sundown and extends through nightfall on Sept. 10. Yom Kippur begins on the eve of Sept. 17 after sundown and extends until nightfall Sept. 18. “Our services are user-friendly, making it enjoyable and meaningful for both the beginner and the advanced. Song, commentary and the use of English-Hebrew prayer books enable those of all levels to become active participants in the services,” says Rabbi Alter Korf, who leads the St. Petersburg branch. “During the Jewish High Holidays, accessibility can translate into different factors for different people, such as a nonjudgmental atmosphere, affordability of the services or the ability for a beginner to follow along. Our goal is to lower the barriers of entry, and encourage each and every Jew to actively participate in these most holy and introspective days.” On Sept. 5, Chabad also will be hosting a High Holiday-themed Mitzvah Factory for families at the center, 4010 Park St. N. The event starts at 11:30 a.m. and will include making round Challah breads, bottling honey, creating New Year’s cards and assembling these items as gifts for distribution throughout the local Jewish community. A complete schedule of this year’s High Holiday services can be found at www.chabadsp.com or call 727-344-4900.

JHHS and its affiliates, including The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center Inc., Suburban Hospital and Howard County General Hospital Inc., along with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, make up Johns Hopkins Medicine. JHHS is a world leader in clinical care, research and medical education and would be joining forces with a leading provider of pediatric specialty care. “The integration of All Children’s into Johns Hopkins Medicine creates a synergy that allows both partners to continue our mission-centric work in children’s healthcare,” says Gary Carnes, president and CEO of All Children’s Health System. “We believe it increases All Children’s value as a key community asset, extending benefits near and beyond to the families of children in need of topnotch clinical care by adding the benefits that the world-class teaching and research opportunities of Johns Hopkins Medicine will bring.”

CD Will Have You Singing the Blues and Rock, Too A few years ago, Eric Mullins had a vision. The musician and founder of Mullins Music, a nonprofit community music school in New Port Richey, wanted to create a selection of music for kids that was entertaining and meaningful. “I have always enjoyed kids’ music and grew up listening to Raffi and watching Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers, he says. “All had amazing Elena Banet is one of several students from Mullins Music to sing on the new CD, Potjiekos. music and real musicians playing real instruments. I wanted to create something that would be fun to listen to for kids and adults, and still be educational.” The result is Potjiekos, an album of original children’s music featuring 10 songs across a diverse selection of music genres, including blues, jazz, reggae, country, hip hop, rock and others. “The concept of Potjiekos has a lot to do with the name. Potjiekos is a stew cooked in South Africa that uses all sorts of tasty ingredients, so we ended up with a CD where each song would intentionally be a different genre,” Mullins says. Since 2009, Mullins has been reaching out to the community to help fund the completion and launch of the CD, for which 10 percent of all profits from album sales will go to the school. With the CD launching this fall, Mullins says he hopes it will spur a universal interest in world music. “We hope to get kids and adults excited about different styles of music, different cultures, and appreciative of live music and real instruments,” he says. A CD release party is planned for October. To pre-order the CD, go to www.mullinsmusic.org. Visit www.myspace.com/potjiekosmusic to hear some of the tracks.
