s Anne of Green Gables shares, “isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?” As the new school year begins, the opportunity for a fresh start is available to each and every student. All you need is to consider a few methods and habits that will create positive study skills and build the foundation for a great year of learning and growth for all. Strong study habits may be tied to three areas: place, system and method. Every student needs a place to study; a space that encourages concentration and is inviting and comfortable. Agree on a study space and get your child involved in planning and arranging this space. Work to remove external as well as internal distractions. if there are multiple children in the house, designate study time as quiet time. Turn off the electronics in the designated study space and allow for concentrated, uninterrupted time. Multitasking is not effective!
information to a simple melody. Encourage your children, students of all ages, to learn through song. This process may be applied to math facts, biology, world history, or a foreign language. Our brains remember music so help your student sing her way to learning new information.
Habit
Humans are creatures of habit. Think about your morning routine. How often do you change the order of dressing, brushing your teeth, drinking your coffee, preparing for your day? This is because your morning routine has become a habit. Repetition works the same way for student learning. instead of insisting on one hour of math fact practice once a week, try five minutes daily. The repetition will create a habit and the habit will result in learning that sticks!
Ease
Most of us are overwhelmed when faced with a large project. To manage, we break the project down into smaller projects so that we may feel satisfaction as we make progress. Learning works the same way. When faced with a significant amount of information to learn, our minds will clear and hold onto the information more efficiently if we break the information into smaller parts. Have your child start with a small chunk of information. Once the first chunk is learned, add the next piece. Don’t forget the repetition! Review the first chunk daily as you continue to add the rest of the information. Every child learns in different ways. it is vital that your child begin to identify how he learns best. Some students are able to read information and learn it. Others must explain it to someone to
For success in school, children also need to find their personal system of organization. Three-ring binders for each subject with colorcoded homework lists may work for mom, but Johnny may prefer a spiral notebook for all subjects and pocket folders for handouts. There is no one right way to get organized for school and studying. The vital piece is for the student to engage in finding a system that will work for him. The parent’s job is to offer suggestions and work to lower frustration when one system fails. Try another. Eventually all students will find a system that works! Once students have established a place to study and a system to organize the work, students need a variety of methods in their learning toolbox. Consider:
Song
When asked to share the alphabet with others, how many of us automatically hear the ABC song in our heads? Have you ever forgotten your ABCs? What may we learn from this? Music promotes memory! One of the simplest and most effective forms of study is attaching

...................................................................................................................................................... remember it. Others need to hear it to remember and learn. There is no right or wrong way to learn and study, but there is a right or wrong way for each child. Help your children try a variety of methods. Do a few experiments. One day, ask your child to read a list of things to do. The next day, ask her what was on the list. Another day, read the list to him and follow up in the same way. Finally, ask your child to read the list aloud to you. Keep track of how much your child remembers from these three methods. Use this information to help guide your child to her best study method. Remember, most likely it will not be the same as your learning method!

he back and forth routine that accompanies many children with a mom and dad in different homes often brings exhaustion. During the school year, it can create confusion, anxiety and turmoil. Children need a stable home environment, free of tension and chaos, to succeed in school. if you spend any time at your child’s school, particularly middle and high schools, you’ll notice the pressure and demands they face. Minefields at home only create more stress. As parents and stepparents, what can we do to ensure a successful back to school entry? One of the best ways to promote success is to commit to doing your part in maintaining a friendly relationship with your ex. i know you’d rather eat a cockroach than talk about how to live in harmony with your ex or your spouse’s ex, but it’s vital to the wellbeing of your children and stepchildren. That doesn’t mean you have to be best friends with your ex-husband, or your stepson’s mom, but you do have to commit to having a cordial relationship. I will be the first to admit this hasn’t come

A HEALTHIER OUTLOOK September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
The Tampa Bay Area YMCAs – leaders in youth development and healthy living – want to help families in our community understand the risks of childhood obesity and how to incorporate regular physical activity and healthy eating into their lives.
Our childrearing season passes quickly and we’re left with fond memories. Seek to enjoy the hassles! Step back, take a deep breath, and snap a few pictures of your growing children on meet the teacher night. Then consider what you can do to sow peace with those around you. Will you commit to take the high road as often as possible? Will you do your part to co-parent in harmony? As school gets into full swing, your children and stepchildren deserve a fresh beginning at school, with minimal conflict at home. Yes, it’s hard when kids move between homes, but it’s not impossible to find peace. Gayla Grace is an author and stepfamily coach with a his, hers and ours family. She loves helping non-traditional families learn to thrive in their relationships.

he power is in the storyline’s subtly. There’s no violence, no cursing, no screaming. it’s just a girl telling her story.
“The very first time I saw The Yellow Dress, i was very emotional. i was in tears, in fact.” says Bonnie Roebuck, whose Heather’s Hope Foundation partners with Heartland for Children in Bartow and Deana’s Educational Theater in Massachusetts to bring the play here. Roebuck’s only daughter, Heather, was killed five years ago by husband Clay Rimmer. The couple had been high school sweethearts, together for 15 years when the murder-suicide happened. “The play depicts what it must have been like for Heather dating Clay. He was possessive, extremely jealous and controlling,” says Roebuck. “i really do feel with all my heart that if Heather had had an opportunity to see The yellow Dress, she most likely would have tried to get out of the relationship with Clay and maybe even come to me.” At the time of her death, Heather was a schoolteacher. “it would’ve sounded the alarm bells of the danger to come,” says Roebuck as we watched the play together at Tenoroc High. The play and Deana’s Educational Theater were created in memory of Deana Brisbois, a victim of dating violence. Twenty years later, countless numbers of teenagers have seen the play and though the story is not theirs, it still resonates with many of them. it’s a stage play, a reality check and a lifesaver. it can be overwhelming and haunting, immediate and slow, says Laura Modrall. And she should know! She’s got the clearest view in the house – center stage!
“Before every show, i stand backstage and listen to the students file in to the auditorium. They are oftentimes loudly joking and just plain excited about being out of class. Then the show starts and i begin to tell Anna’s story. i see my audience squirm, but many hide their discomfort by laughing and joking with their friends. This, for me, is a pivotal moment because i have to try to keep them focused and push through the discomfort.” The whispers quiet. The side glances stop. All eyes are center stage. “i’d like to give my mom and dad a hug,” Modrall says in the final scene. “But I don’t think I can do that now and i’m not going to the police! They would just take me to the morgue.” For Roebuck’s part, she says, “Funding the play is, without a doubt, the most important thing our foundation does.” And it’s no surprise she feels that way when you see the thank you notes. in one, the adult writes, “There wasn’t a sound, not a peep from the 250-plus junior class. The principal told me the next day that a young man approached her to ask for help.” Deana Brisbois’ friend Patrick Lucy sums up the power of the play. “On the day of Deana’s funeral, Deana’s father ira explained that neither Deana nor her family ever fully appreciated the danger she was in. ira was convinced that all individuals needed to be educated on the warning signs and perils associated with dating and domestic violence. With Deana’s Educational Theater we filled that need and continue to develop and distribute programming to educate individuals of all ages in an effort to keep them safe. Deanna would be proud.” Lissette Campos is the director of community affairs for ABC Action News. Join the ABC Action News team on Oct. 1 for a special presentation of The Yellow Dress at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts.

fter months of gynecological problems and multiple office visits, you and your physician have decided that a hysterectomy is the best treatment.
Now as you discuss the specifics, you’re faced with another complicated decision – what type of hysterectomy is best for you? Will your surgery be done through an abdominal incision, vaginally, laparoscopically or robotically? These last three methods are often referred to as minimally invasive techniques. So what is this new technology about? What advantages does robotic surgery offer over traditional (abdominal) hysterectomy or laparoscopic only surgery? What are the risks compared to other methods of surgery? The FDA approved the da Vinci Surgical System for use in gynecology in 2005. Urologists, cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons, and general surgeons as well as gynecologic surgeons all regularly perform procedures with the robotic system. The first robotic prostatectomy in the United States was performed in 2000. in gynecology, the robotic system has seen accelerated use over the past five years. The most common procedures performed by gynecologists are hysterectomy, removal of ovaries, removal of uterine fibroids (myomectomy), endometriosis surgery, lymph node removal, and surgery for vaginal support (sacrocolpopexy). The robotic system is composed of three basic parts: a patient side robot, a vision or camera system and the robotic master console. The surgeon operates from the remote
console using a combination of hand controls and foot pedals. While operating at the console, the surgeon controls the camera movement and focus as well as the instruments placed in the patient, which are attached to the robotic arms. The surgeon uses the hand controls to operate the instruments. The instruments are wristed at the tips, which allows for fine control and complex movement. These instruments provide seven degrees of freedom similar to the human hand. in contrast, standard laparoscopic instruments have limited degrees of freedom of movement and their motion is not as natural. The combination of the robotic threedimensional vision system, the wristed instrumentation and the ergonomic positioning for the surgeon at the console gives robotic surgery an advantage over standard laparoscopic surgery. With standard laparoscopic surgery the operating surgeon stands over the patient and directly controls the instruments while having to twist and bend to get the instruments in the correct position. The fine control offered by the robotic instruments improves the ability to control bleeding, perform intricate dissection and place and tie sutures when compared to standard laparoscopy. All these advantages allow the operator to perform difficult operative procedures without having to make a large abdominal incision. The safety of robotic surgery compared to standard laparoscopic surgery has been shown to be equal and may actually be better as physician experience with this technology increases. Many physicians
believe robotic surgery is superior for certain types of gynecologic surgery but realize that no single approach is best for all surgical cases or clinical situations. The best physicians are able to recognize and perform the appropriate procedure for the specific and unique medical problem. if your physician recommends that your surgery be done robotically, there are some questions you should ask. 1. 2. 3. 4.
How many robotic cases has she done? Why is robotics the preferred method? What are the alternative methods? What are the possible complications?
Don’t be offended if your physician wants to refer you to another surgeon. This probably means your physician recognizes that your surgery requires a certain expertise and is referring you to a physician with that expertise. your physician is keeping your best interests in mind and wants you to have the best possible outcome. Robotic surgery is exciting and superior for certain surgical procedures. Most importantly, it brings new options and benefits to women facing surgery, including less pain, shorter recovery times, optimal clinical outcomes and less bleeding and scarring. i look forward to the future with this technology and seeing where it will take us with continued evaluation and innovation. Dr. W. Gregory Wilkerson is an OB/GYN at Insignia Care for Women and serves as the chair for the division of obstetrics and gynecology at Florida Hospital Tampa’s Women’s Health Pavilion.

Early Learning Coalition Presents Ooey Gooey Event
A group of 400 early childhood educators and parents will come together on Sept. 14 at the Mainsail Conference Center to get schooled on how to play games the right way! The Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County invited Lisa Murphy, The Ooey Gooey Lady, to Tampa to inspire area educators and parents as the new school year begins. Coalition CEO Dave McGerald says that so often early educators and parents get caught up in the academics even during the early years. Yes, we want children to read and write, but we need well-rounded children. A child that can do math problems but doesn’t know how to share or communicate isn’t going to be ready for anything.” Tickets are $30 (sold in advance only) and available at http://tampaooeygooey. eventbrite.com. For more information, call the Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County at 813-202-1000.

Mastering the art of motherhood, work and community.
From a natural foods chef to best-selling author, reality TV star to self-made businesswoman and animal rights activist, Bethenny Frankel is many things, but what she prides herself on most is her job as mom to daughter Bryn. Adding to her list of duties, Frankel is bringing her uniquely honest, unfiltered and playful perspective to daytime television this month on Bethenny. Her new show is expected to become the go-to destination for women to learn, laugh, feel inspired, be transformed and, ultimately, in Bethenny’s words, “Always go for it.” Before quickly coming to assumptions about her rise to business mogul status, it’s important to note that successes have not come easily for this mom of one. Her early life, part of which was spent in Florida, has been described as difficult with her father leaving the family early in her life. She’s described her father as “always drinking” and often argued with her stepfather. After graduating high school, Frankel moved to new york to attend new york University. After earning a degree in psychology and communications, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting, which only produced small roles in films like Hollywood Hills 90028 and Wish Me Luck. When describing her life in L.A., she told Forbes, “i didn’t know what i was doing; i was broke.” Once Bethenny returned to new york, she attended and completed studies at the national Gourmet institute for Healthy and Culinary Arts. Soon after BethennyBakes was established with the idea that, “i would be the next Mrs. Fields, the next Famous Amos, but the healthy version,” she explains in her book A Place of Yes. Frankel first came to national recognition after appearing on nBC’s The Apprentice: Martha Stewart, completing the season as runner-up. She later leveraged her appearance
on the show into an endorsement deal and monthly column in Health magazine. network executives saw a personality they couldn’t ignore so they put her center stage on Bravo’s hit The Real Housewives of New York for three seasons. She emerged as the star of the series, with a huge network of fans, which led Bravo to create a spin-off series, which premiered with the highest ratings in Bravo history. Soon after appearing on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York City, Skinnygirl was launched. The company is described by People as “a food and lifestyle brand catered to healthy living.” in April 2011, Frankel sold Skinnygirl cocktail company to Fortune Brands’ Beam Global for a reported $100 million. Last year, Frankel checked novelist off her list with the release of Skinnydipping, which was an instant New York Times best-seller. Her book Naturally Thin: Unleash Your Skinnygirl and Free Yourself from a Lifetime of Dieting debuted on the New York Times Best-Sellers list and remained on the list for an impressive 18 consecutive weeks. Frankel has also penned The Skinnygirl Dish: Easy Recipes for Your Naturally Thin Life, The Skinnygirl Dish and A Place of Yes: 10 Rules for Getting Everything You Want Out Of Life, which spent 13 weeks on the new york Times Best-Sellers list. Skinnygirl Solutions, released this summer, includes tips on wellness, career building and more. Frankel’s uncanny ability to engage with audiences through her books will leap onto TV screens nationally this month with the launch of Bethenny. The show will cover the topics that women care about most — from love and relationships to celebrities and pop culture and beauty and fitness — all through Bethenny’s own relatable personal and professional life experiences. From fun and spontaneous celebrity interviews to informative takeaways on health and
relationship issues, Bethenny is sure to become the go-to destination for women every day to learn, laugh and feel inspired. Here’s what Bethenny had to say about her fears, achievements and inspirations. What do you think is the secret to your success? Saying things that everyone’s thinking. What is your biggest fear? not getting a good night’s sleep. What advice would you give to other women about balancing a career and motherhood? We plan and you’ve got to laugh. Just roll with it. you’re going to strive for balance and that is probably the best you are ever going to get. Just strive. What is your proudest moment? Giving birth to my daughter. What is your biggest achievement? Writing naturally Thin and being able to effectively communicate with women about their food issues. What makes you happy? My daughter, yoga and sleep How do you relax and take time for yourself? My daughter, yoga and sleep What kind of message would you like to give women? Be open, be truthful and be fearless to achieve things you never dreamed possible. What else would you like to share about being a mom, about your work? That it’s possible to have both. you just have to be organized, efficient and make sure you have quality time with your family. Who is your biggest inspiration or role model? Women. After so much success so fast, how do you stay grounded? Don’t believe the hype.

Romeo’s application was selected from among nearly 150 by a national panel of judges. Orangetheory Fitness, with six locations in the Tampa Bay area, is offering Kids Fitness classes for ages 12-17 (younger children can participate when accompanied by a parent), featuring a heart rate-based workout to help kids get fit for that sports tryout, band practice or the daily walk or bike ride to school. “Our success is centered on helping people to achieve their fitness goals quickly,” says Terry Blachek, Orangetheory Fitness Tampa Bay owner and co-founder. “We have seen members experience 30-50 pounds of weight loss in six weeks or less with our science-based, heart-rate monitored program. Harbour Island Art Walk Is Painting September Pink Each month, the Harbour island Art Walk showcases the work of talented local artists to anywhere from 1,000 to 2,000 patrons who stop to listen to live music, indulge in local food and drink and check out original art, crafts and fashions. Admission is free to the outdoor event, which was launched 1½ years ago and not only gives artists an opportunity for meaningful exposure but area nonprofits as well. Wendy Harding, Harbour island Art Walk coordinator, notes that every month the group selects an artist or charity to be awarded free space at the show. Past nonprofit recipients have included animal rescue groups as well the Sylvia Thomas Center for Adoption. The Art Walk also hosts and actively assists these charities’ fundraising efforts through artist donations for auctions and drawings. “We feel this art venue is not just about arts and artists, but should be used as a catalyst to bring awareness to the Bay Area by helping through community outreach,” says Harding. September’s selected nonprofit, the Pink Dragon Ladies, caught Harding’s eye as she was watching local dragon boat teams train. “it’s hard to miss an all Pink dragon boat team. That prompted me to look up their charity,” she says and quickly learned that they represent the first cancer survivor dragon boat team in Florida. “i admire these woman survivors for their strength and ambition to educate our community and inspire every woman like myself.” This month’s Art Walk is noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 29 and will feature special “Ride the Pink Dragon” boat rides. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Pink Dragon Ladies of Tampa’s 501c3 charity fund for breast cancer awareness. Go to www.harbourislandartwalk.com for details.

Summer Adventure Takes Students to the Amazon A group of students, families and faculty from Academy at the Lakes in Land O’ Lakes joined Dr. Paul Beaver, owner of Amazonia Expeditions on an inaugural family trip to the Amazon, part of the school’s new extended learning summer travel program. The trip which ran eight days, began June 8 departing Tampa and traveling by way of Lima, Peru to their final destination. Science teacher Colleen McCormick who took part on the excursion recently chronicled the group’s journey in a piece in which she describes their new surroundings and shares how rigorous the group’s schedule was during this time. “After a good night’s sleep in Lima, we rose early for a quick breakfast and headed to our next flight to Iquito, Peru. This city was our last touch of civilization before boarding a boat to travel 2 hours up the Amazon and its tributary the Tahuayo River to our destination, Tahuayo Lodge,” writes McCormick. “Blending into the surrounding trees, the Tahuayo Lodge looked like a tree house on stilts.” McCormick and the other travelers stayed in what she describes as “neat and comfortable” accommodations with modern bathrooms and LED lights and dined on local fare highlighted by fresh foods such as fish, rice and beans, avocados, beets, carrots, hearts of palm, plantains, and star fruit.
Tenth-grader Tori Emerick of Academy at the Lakes poses with a wholly monkey while on her school’s extended learning trip to the Amazon this past June.
Following that first evening of dinner and a preliminary hike led by guides introducing the area’s resident bats, tarantulas and other neighboring nocturnal creatures, members of the group took part in a variety of exciting experiences over their eight days exploring the Amazon. As McCormick notes, the adventures were steady and plentiful. “We saw toucans and macaws during bird watching, toured the local village and fed breakfast to the school children, took a boat ride to an area of the jungle where we were able to find poison dart frogs and walk through a bat cave. We also hand-fed wooly monkeys rehabilitated by Amazonia Expeditions and released into the wild,” she says. Some members also took advantage of other more physical activities available including a swim with pink dolphins, canoe ride to observe giant otters, fishing for catch-and-eat piranha and zipline excursions.
One of the group’s most memorable adventures took place five days into the trip, when they traveled an hour up the Amazon to reach a scientific research center that draws biologists from across the world to do research in an area with one of the highest concentrations of monkeys in the Amazon. One of the students in the group Tori Emerick, class of 2015, continued on with the research center after the Academy group departed, working alongside a biologist studying the uakari monkeys. Tori remained there for four weeks as part a yearly internship made available to an Academy high school student and offered by Dr. Beaver. Throughout the journey, McCormick notes, she and the group felt at ease in their surroundings. “Each of these adventures was led by an expert guide and tailored to the interest and ability level of the participants. Our safety and comfort was always their top priority,” she says. An extended learning excursion to Peru is planned for next summer (June 9-15). All travel excursions are open to families of Academy at the Lakes only. An informational meeting will be held this month at the school. Visit www.perujungle.com or email cmccormick@academyatthelakes.org for details.
