Halloween at Walt Disney World: 5
Must-Do Activities
by Dani Meyering
1
Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Parade
If you want to make the Halloween season extra special, then treat your family to Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. How fun is it to don costumes and trick-or-treat inside the Magic Kingdom theme park?
Plus, you'll enjoy shorter wait times on many attractions, meet and greet special Disney characters, witness incredible Halloween fireworks, and bounce along to one of the best parades at Walt Disney World.
One of our favorite things to do at the party is watching Mickey's "Boo-to-You" Halloween Parade which features more villains and characters than ever before.
Tips for Watching Mickey's "Boo-to-You" Halloween Parade:
• Showtimes are 8:15 p.m. and 11:15 p.m.
• Watch in Frontierland
• Bring a towel or blanket
• Send someone to trick or treat or mobile order food while you wait.
PRO TIP:
The 8:15 p.m. is better for kids, but the later performance is much less crowded. The parade itself lasts about 15 minutes. The wait times for the rides and character meet and greets also tend to be shorter during the parades and fireworks.

2
Treats at Disney Resort Hotels
Each of the 20 resort hotels at Walt Disney World offers at least one specialty treat for the Halloween season. Some resorts even have specialty fall-flavored entrees. You do not need to be a guest of the hotel to enjoy these tasty treats, but parking at each resort is typically reserved for guests with a confirmed dining reservation or those staying at the hotel.
PRO TIP: Park at Disney Springs and utilize the complimentary transportation to hop around. Save time by using mobile ordering while you're using the transportation.
3
Watch the Fireworks Outside the Parks
Experience the enchantment of Disney's Halloween season, even outside the parks! While Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party dazzles with its iconic fireworks, you don't need a park ticket to enjoy the show. Whether by the water's edge or at a rooftop restaurant, there are multiple locations that offer a magical way to catch the spectacular fireworks display without stepping inside the park. One of our favorites is the California Grill restaurant at the Contemporary Resort. Book a dinner reservation close to fireworks times for a gorgeous view.
PRO TIP:
For viewing at Disney resort hotels, you will need a confirmed dining reservation in order to utilize the parking. You can also park for free at Disney Springs and utilize Disney transportation.

Decorations at Disney Hotels and Resorts
Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground comes alive during Halloween, thanks to the creative decorations by enthusiastic guests. It's also a fun spot for little ones, offering pony rides and a plenty of room to run around. With the addition of new, beautiful cabins,
there's even more to enjoy. To explore the festive decor at guest campsites, park for free at Disney Springs and take a bus to Fort Wilderness.
You can also be treated to spooky window decorations, often found this time of year at Disney's Pop Century Resort, Disney's Art of Animation Resort, and other Value and Moderate level Disney hotels. Fellow guests often decorate their windows and doors with Halloween decals and other decorations throughout the Halloween season.

6. Place flatbread directly onto the baking rack.
7. Bake for 6-7 minutes.
Cutters used in recipes and eyeball food picks are linked in my Instagram profile for you at @lunchboxmafia
TIPS:
• I added Müenster cheese under the corn so that it would stick to the bread.
• Microwave your butternut squash to save time.
• Make this ahead of time and reheat each slice in your air-fryer at 350 for 3 minutes.
8. Carefully remove from the oven and onto a cooling rack.
9. Cut into triangles to mimic candy corn shape.
SPOOKY CHARCUTERIE BOX
Pack your favorites and add a spooky touch with mini Halloween cutters and eyeball food picks!
For the jack-o’-lantern brie cheese, slice in half. On one slice, carve triangle eyes and a zig-zag mouth. Add some fig jam to your uncut half and put them together. This combo is so delicious!
DIA DE LOS MUERTOS SANDWICH
I used mini veggie cutters for her face, mini flower cutters for her eyes and a mini heartshaped cutter - upside down - for her nose.
TIPS:
• Use colorful veggies like bell peppers to insert into the eyes and nose cutouts.
• Use cream cheese to stick pepperoni flowers onto her head.
• Use black olives to define the mouth.
Here I used mini cutters from Target.
Cooking with Toddlers: Building Healthy Habits and Fun Memories
by Daniela Faig, @danifaig, danifaig.com
Cooking with toddlers can be a joyful and messy experience that helps build healthy habits and creates lasting memories. Here are some tips to make the most of your time in the kitchen with your little ones:
Talk to Them, They Are Listening
While cooking, talk to your toddlers about the benefits of fruits and healthy snacks. Explain how these foods help them grow strong, build big muscles, or run faster—use examples they can relate to. Share your favorite fruits or vegetables and ask them what they like best. Let them smell different ingredients to familiarize themselves with various scents. Giving them choices helps them get to know their own tastes, such as asking, “Do you want to add blueberries or strawberries?” Starting early helps build a healthy relationship with food.
Let Them Do It, Start Small
Involve your toddlers in small tasks. They don't need to prepare the whole meal—just a few minutes of mixing, cutting (with toddler-safe utensils), adding sprinkles, pouring milk, or washing fruits. They love water, so washing fruits can be a fun activity. The more they do it, the more comfortable they'll become. If they're already in the kitchen with you, pulling on your legs, let them help. Pick a time that works best for the family to make it less stressful. Over time, they'll become more involved.
Make It Fun and Messy
Use this time to bond and have fun. Set low expectations and be patient. Cooking is like any other activity—they need time to learn. Enjoy the messiness and maybe even let them help clean up afterward. Promote creativity by making faces on plates or cutting food into fun shapes. Toddlers love to name things, so let them name a banana or other food items. This keeps them entertained and helps develop fine motor skills.
Positive Affirmations
Encourage them by eating what they make and giving positive feedback. A simple "This is the best pancake in the world!" can boost their confidence and make them feel proud of their efforts.
Create Traditions
Establish family traditions like a Wednesday afternoon snackmaking session or Sunday breakfast cooking time. This gives them something to look forward to and helps create cherished family memories. You'll remember and miss these crazy moments.
Cooking with toddlers may require extra patience and cleanup, but the benefits are worth it. You're not only teaching them valuable skills and healthy eating habits but also creating joyful moments that they will remember for years to come.
BANANA
BITES
INGREDIENTS
1 banana
nut butter or sunflower butter
¼ cup sugar free chocolate
1 tablespoon of coconut oil
DIRECTIONS
1. Cut the bananas into slices.
2. Spread nut butter in between two slices.
3. Transfer them to the freezer for 10 minutes.
4. Melt chocolate and coconut oil in the microwave at 30-second intervals until it's completely melted.
5. Dip banana bites into the melted chocolate.
6. Freeze for 10 minutes and enjoy!
TIP: Store them in the freezer and have them ready to eat anytime!
The Bull & Bear at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando: A Time for Elegance & Luxury at the Dinner Table
by Laura Byrne
The moment you walk through the doors of the Waldorf Astoria Orlando…time hits you. The iconic clock at the center of the lobby reminds you it’s time to unwind and savor the moment. No matter who you are, time is a luxury, and it should be well spent.
So, if you are in search of a special night out where your time — and money — will be well spent, the Bull & Bear is it.
REIMAGINED ELEGANCE
First opened almost 15 years ago, the hotel has recently undergone a top to bottom reimagination; from its lobby to rooms and suites, restaurants and Peacock Lounge. It’s still the resort we fell in love with more than a decade ago when my husband and I got married there - there is still that familiar smell that takes us back every time, but like us, it has grown up and into a more sophisticated and refined version of itself. And the same goes for its signature restaurant, the Bull & Bear.
We hosted our wedding reception at the Bull & Bear, so we were a bit sad when we heard it would be undergoing a renovation late last year. But all of those feelings of potential lost nostalgia disappeared when we experienced the reimagined version for the first time recently.
The space maintains its elegance, but the heavy darker red tones have been replaced with lighter shades of green — a color often associated with harmony, balance, and money. It’s classy and comfortable, but at the same time maintains the weighty elegance and traditions that makes you aware that you are sitting in a special place about to enjoy an exceptional experience.
THE FOOD
Before we dive into what’s new on the menu, we want to reassure you that beloved menu items like the Bull & Bear "Fried Chicken", Pasta Explosion, and Chateaubriand for Two remain.
Fried chicken may not seem like a dish you’d find at one of the top 100 restaurants in the United States (according to Open Table – and according to my husband, one of his Top 10), but let me assure you…it’s fried chicken as you’ve never tasted or experienced before. It’s a process that takes longer than a day to prepare, and, of course, the Bull & Bear is all about the exceptional experience, so the table-side preparation of this dish and many others is just a part of what makes this place so unique.
My kids and husband with the iconic clock in the lobby of Waldorf Astoria Orlando.
THE NEW ADDITIONS
On this trip, we decided to try the new additions by chef de cuisine Juan Suarez — who happened to be out that night due to the birth of his new baby. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
We started with the Dry Aged Yellowtail Crudo, which was light and bright. A perfect way to start a meal. Next was the experience of The Tomato – a tomato and burrata salad experience. And when I say experience—it truly was. We were presented with a plate containing the most perfect-looking tomato. The thing is, this wasn’t just any tomato...in fact, it wasn’t even a tomato at all. Slicing into it dramatically reveals the secret burrata inside! The Tomato is served with additional (real) heirloom cherry tomatoes, decadent basil foam, and white balsamic pearls that look just like caviar.
We then moved on to the highly recommended Carabineros Shrimp, a seafood paella dish like we’ve never tasted before topped with Carabineros Shrimp imported from Spain. The dish is a nod to Chef Suarez's Spanish heritage. The shrimp had the most delicate texture and flavor — an absolute treat!
Since we were at a steakhouse and we prefer our meats cooked to different temperatures, we opted for the Chateaubriand for Two, which was sliced tableside and cooked a bit longer for my taste.
One of the new additions that caught my eye was the Insta-famous —The Baked Potato This is also prepared table side and worth its weight of $100, topped with Petrossian Ossetra Caviar, Jamon Iberico de Bellota, Sour Cream, and Gold Leaf. You can absolutely split this among 2-4 people.
COCKTAILS AND WINE
The bartenders at Bull & Bear continue to be exceptional – from an elegantly simple-yetperfect martini to new creations like The Monk (Fernet Branca, Green Chartreuse, Lemon Juice, Cane Sugar, and Basil Dust) and The Aristocrat (Black Truffle Infused Beluga Gold Line Vodka, Vermouth di Torino, Petrossian Caviar Stuffed Olives, and Gold Leaf), the mixologists pay incredible attention to detail.
And if you know (or want to know) great wines, the Bull & Bear has put together a remarkable wine collection encompassing both old world and new, from young to well-aged, made by
both well-known wineries and also less-known hidden gems, at reasonable price points for whatever your budget may be. In particular, their selections of California, French, and Italian wines are just exceptional.
THE FINAL ACT: THE LEMON
Again, not new, but there is nothing like The Lemon anywhere. It’s simply magic and I can’t think of a better way to end a luxurious meal than with the cool, sweet yet refreshing Lemon. The lemon skins are poached for 24 hours and then filled with lemon sorbet, creating a unique dessert you won't find anywhere else. It’s tradition.
A TIME FOR TRADITION
Tradition. That’s the beautiful thing about a restaurant like the Bull & Bear. It is a place where families can create lifelong traditions. To this day, our wedding guests tell us our wedding had the best food of any wedding they’ve ever attended. And that was intentional. We realize how strongly our memories are tied to tastes and smells, and it’s those senses that bring us back to treasured moments in time.
Even though the Bull & Bear has evolved, it’s still a place where we and families like yours can savor special moments as you bond through elegant traditions, flavors, and experiences.
OUR OTHER FAVORITES YOU MUST TRY:
We’ve dined at Bull & Bear more times than I can count over the years because it is such a special place to us. This also means we have had a chance to taste many of the menu items. Here are more of our favorites:
STARTERS:
The Grand Seafood Tower (fun to order with a group), Lobster Bisque, Florida Farms Corn Soup, Wagyu Carpaccio
ENTREE: Pan-Seared Sea Bass
SIDES: Lobster Mac and Cheese
DESSERT: Chocolate Bar
HOW TO MAKE A RESERVATION:
Visit BullandBearOrlando.com to secure your experience. It’s a perfect date night and even a night out with family and friends. Our kids love splitting the Fried Chicken.
There is also a beautiful private dining space if you are hosting a special event, and of course, as I’ve mentioned, they can accommodate larger parties as we did for our wedding, and it was…as with every visit to the Bull & Bear…a time to remember.
The Tomato
The Blossom - another new addition to the cocktail menu.

Zoey's Legacy: From Beloved Children's Book Star to Pet Sitting & Pet Loss Support Inspiration
by Ilene Lieber
Twelve-and-a-half years ago, I met the love of my life: My "doggy daughter" Zoey. From that moment, she gave me the greatest gift of love and purpose that I have ever experienced (and I became an officially obsessed dog mom!). For those of us lucky enough to have this very deep connection with our "babies" (and there are so many of us out there!), you know exactly what I mean when I say they are not our pets. They are our children and our family. The relationship we have with them is so valuable and important.
A few years ago, I decided to combine my love of Zoey, kids, and writing to publish a children's book! "Zoey's Adventures to the Ice Cream Shop" is a true story based on one of our adventures visiting a local ice cream shop on National Ice Cream Day. It has a lesson about patience and the good things that come to those who wait, which I like to say are great for kids and for grown-ups. It's been a true
pleasure sharing the very special love of Zoey with everyone and seeing her capture the hearts of so many families, just like she has mine.
Sadly, Zoey passed away a few months ago (it still doesn't feel real), and in an instant, my whole world changed. Loving and losing Zoey has made me recognize more that my purpose in life is to give love, which I am continuing to do through For Love of Zoey Pet Sitting & Pet Loss Support. I wholeheartedly believe that all our sweet babies deserve the absolute greatest love and care.
I'm happy to continue giving all the love that my Angel Zoey taught me how to give to help take care of other babies. (It's nice, too, to feel like I'm still doing life with her, just in a different way.) Through my own grief journey, I also believe how deserving pet parents are of compassion, understanding, empathy, and support in the very difficult loss of their beloved baby.
Here are just a few (of many) words of comfort that have helped me, and I hope they help you, too:
• Pet loss grief is very personal, and it can be a rollercoaster. Whatever emotion you feel, whenever you feel it, for as long as you feel it, is completely normal and ok.
• We don't get over it; we learn to cope with it. Find what works best for you to honor your baby and your own grief journey.
• Be kind to yourself. Give your mind, body, heart, and soul extra love and care.
• Wherever you are at this moment is exactly where you should be. Focus on what's right in front of you. You are doing the best you can.
• Just because your baby isn't earthside doesn't mean you can't continue to do life together. Your relationship, your bond, your love story never ends.
I'm proud to carry on Zoey's legacy through Zoey's Adventures Books and For Love of Zoey. Whether I can help take care of other fur babies and give them all the love they deserve, or I can help walk alongside others during their pet loss grief journey, it's my great honor to do so. 5 Storage Solutions for Adorable Artwork
by Karimah Henry, @Craftingafunlife
As a parent who saves all my children’s artwork, I had to find a better way to store or display the pieces—something that can get overwhelming, especially if you have multiple kids. You don’t want to hurt your little one’s feelings, but hoarding is not an option. Whether it’s adorable art projects from school or crafts you make together at home, here are five ways to organize or display your child’s artwork.
PEGBOARD AND DRY ERASE POCKETS
As a crafter, I love using pegboards to organize my craft supplies. Since my pegboard is located in a shared space, I thought it would be a great idea to use it to display some of my children’s artwork. Simply insert a drawing into a dry erase pocket, and then hang the dry erase pocket on the pegboard. You can change the artwork once a week or once a month.
PLASTIC BINS
Plastic bins that can be stored under beds or in a closet make an easy storage option for your child’s art collection. Use a clear plastic bin and hanging file folders. Label by each school year and include a picture of your child.
BINDER & SHEET PROTECTORS
If you don’t want to display your child’s artwork around the house, store the pieces in a 3-ring binder. Ask your child to select up to 20 of their favorite pieces of artwork for the year. Place the pieces inside a sheet protector. This makes the contents easy to see, and you can buy more pages to add to the book. Store the binder on a bookshelf. Your child can show off their creative masterpieces whenever friends or family come over.
FILING CABINET
This is how my mom used to store all of our keepsakes when I was younger. Each child had a drawer with their name labeled on the outside.
It’s such a simple and practical way to store your child’s artwork. Each drawer can represent 2-4 years of crafts for one child.
PLATE HOLDER
Plate holders are a fun tool to display crafts that are made using canvas panels, recycled cardboard, odd shapes or large papers. You can place the holder in your child’s room, or in the kitchen, office or living room. I like the idea of creating a theme for the week or month, especially around the holidays.
I recommend going through all of your child’s artwork at the end of each calendar year. Separate items based on what they want to keep, recycle or give to a family member. If your child decides to keep too many, scan some and create an electronic copy of their artwork.
Raising A Young Voter
by Dani Meyering
Taking your child with you to vote is not just a routine; it's a powerful lesson in citizenship, and it's something I've made a point to do every election season. Since my son was an infant, he has accompanied me to the polls. Now, at six and a half years old, he knows the drill and even gets excited when I tell him it's time to go vote.
From a very young age, children absorb so much from their surroundings. Each time I've taken my son to the polling place, I've explained in simple terms what voting is and why it matters. "We're choosing who will help make important decisions," I tell him, "and everyone who is allowed to vote gets to have a say."
Both of my parents have gotten involved and elected to the local municipality government. It didn't quite hit me until I was an adult how rare such an experience is for a child. Everyone in our hometown knew my mom, thanks to her role in local government. When my dad had his turn later in their retirement years, I witnessed the challenges and joys he faced with being involved in the local government of a small community.
This year, with election season in full swing locally and nationally, our visits to the polls have taken on even greater significance. My son is now old enough to grasp the concept of choice, and he's beginning to understand that the decisions we make in the voting booth have real consequences.
I enjoy seeing the poll workers and volunteers, and I can tell they enjoy seeing my young son along for the experience.
One of the most memorable moments we've shared was during the last national election. As we left the polling station, he proudly wore the "Future Voter" sticker on his shirt. We made quite the pair as I displayed a "I Voted" sticker on my own shirt.
Now, as we prepare to head to the polls again, I'm reminded of how important it is for children to see their parents actively engaging in the democratic process. Whether they're six months old or six years old, children benefit from being part of these moments. They learn that their voice—and someday, their vote—matters.
As we walk into the polling station this election season, I'll hold my son's hand, and together, we'll make our way to the booth. It's a tradition I'm proud to share with him, one that I hope will inspire him to continue the practice long after he's old enough to vote on his own.
The deadline to register for the 2024 General Election is October 7, 2024. Head to registertovoteflorida.gov to check to see if you are registered, and if not, register to vote.

HISTORY SMASHERS: WOMEN’S RIGHT TO VOTE
By Kate Messner Illustrated by Dylan Meconis
In 1920, Susan B. Anthony passed a law that gave voting rights to women in the United States. RIGHT? WRONG!
Susan B. Anthony wasn't even alive when the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified. Plus, it takes a lot more than one person to amend the constitution. The truth is, it took millions of women to get that amendment into law. They marched! They picketed! They even went to jail. But in the end, it all came down to a letter from a state representative's mom. No joke.

Guiding Growth: The Role of Occupational Therapy in Child Development
by Tina Noll, OTR/L of Sunny SPOT Therapy
How do you know if your child could benefit from occupational therapy, and what is OT, anyway? Through everyday activities, exercises, and targeted therapies, OT helps children improve their motor skills, self-care abilities, play, and social interactions. Whether a child faces challenges due to birth defects, learning difficulties, or sensory processing disorders, OT offers a structured approach to enhancing their quality of life.
Benefits of Occupational Therapy for Children
Occupational therapy provides numerous benefits, helping children develop the skills they need to thrive in various aspects of their lives. At Sunny SPOT Therapy, we are dedicated to ensuring that each child receives personalized care that addresses their unique needs.
Folks unfamiliar with OT are often curious about what it is and what benefits can come from it.
Improved Motor Skills
OT focuses on developing both fine and gross motor skills, such as eye-hand coordination and using scissors. These skills are crucial for completing tasks independently, such as feeding, grooming, and handwriting.
Self-Care Skills
Through OT, children can learn essential self-help skills like dressing and bathing, which foster a sense of independence and confidence. At Sunny SPOT, the approach is always child-centered, ensuring that therapy is both effective and engaging for the child.
Enhanced Social Skills
OT also addresses social development, helping children learn positive behaviors and social skills that are essential for interacting with peers and adults.
Sensory Processing
For children with sensory processing issues, OT can be transformative. It teaches them how to cope with and manage sensory input, reducing anxiety and improving their ability to function in different environments. Sunny SPOT therapists are experienced in using sensory integration techniques tailored to each child's sensory needs.
Educational Support
OT can provide critical support for children with educational needs, particularly in areas like pre-writing and handwriting, ensuring they are better equipped for academic success. The team at Sunny SPOT works closely with families and schools to support each child's educational journey.

Signs Your Child May Benefit from Occupational Therapy
The need for OT varies greatly among children, depending on their specific challenges and needs. Some may require only a few sessions to address minor issues, while others might need ongoing therapy to manage more complex conditions.
Parents should consider OT for their child if they notice difficulties with everyday tasks such as gripping a pencil, sitting still, or transitioning to solid foods. Other signs that may indicate a need for OT include trouble paying attention, frequent meltdowns in public places, or intolerance to certain foods or clothing textures.
These challenges can significantly impact a child’s ability to participate fully in daily activities, making OT an invaluable resource for helping them overcome these obstacles.
The Journey to Sunny SPOT
Therapy: A Story of Resilience and Partnership
Our journey to creating Sunny SPOT Therapy is one of resilience and determination. After seven years of collaboration at a local children’s hospital, Carla and I were both laid off due to COVID-19. Despite the setback, we were committed to continuing our work together.
With over 25 years of experience, in various settings like schools, home health services, and outpatient rehab, we launched our own companies in July 2021—Carla with SLP Speak 2 Me Speech Therapy, LLC, and myself with OT Skills 4 Kids, LLC.
A key resource during this time was the book Ready, Set, Treat?: The Official Pocket Guide to Starting Your Solo Private Practice by Kristen Goodwich and Susie Curtis, which helped guide our steps as we built our practices.
Initially, we worked separately, seeing children in their homes, but we always dreamed of having our own space. Six months later, I found an affordable office at a school, and Carla joined me there. When the school needed the space back, we seized the opportunity to create Sunny SPOT Therapy.
We found the perfect space with a shared office, sensory gym, and therapy rooms, and finally, our dream became a reality.
A Path to Success
Occupational therapy is more than just a treatment—it’s a pathway to independence, confidence, and a better quality of life for children facing various developmental challenges.
By addressing physical, cognitive, and sensory needs, OT helps children build the skills they need to succeed at home, in school, and their communities. With the right support and guidance, children can reach their full potential, celebrating each milestone along the way.

Raising Them Ready
PREPARING KIDS TO HANDLE LIFE ON THEIR OWN
by Maggie Rodriguez
When bestselling authors and co-parents Erica and Jonathan Catherman decided to write their next parenting book, they asked themselves a question: “How well had we done to prepare our “adulting” kids to leave home?” Knowing other parents were likely asking themselves the same question, they came up with “Raising Them Ready,” a guide for parents on realworld life skills kids should know before flying solo.
Q A Q A Q A
How soon should we begin preparing our children to handle life on their own?
It’s never too early (or too late) to prepare your kids to handle the demands of life. As young as 2 years old, children really should start learning and practicing how to do life together with others and on their own. We have a name for the process of kids learning to handle the age-and-ability appropriate demands of life. It’s called the Skillset Maturity Continuum. As children mature through the four stages, they learn more than 300 combined skillsets and toolsets on a “Launch List” (see sidebar). By teaching children to be life ready a little at a time, over time, you are helping them build a solid foundation of self-efficacy based on confidence, capabilities and kindness. Whereas parents who find themselves short on time before their child “launches” in life and try pushing their kids though a crash course in Adulting 101 are likely to feel the regret of waiting to the last-minute. Yet how does the saying go? Better late than never.
We often do things for our children to ease difficulty or keep them from struggling. Is this actually a disservice?
Yes and no. If on occasion you do things for your kids because you are showing them love and kindness, then yes. But if by hovering around, always ready to step in to “deal” with the situation, you are indulging your child. Then, no. Repeatedly indulging a child in this way can keep them from gaining the practical experience and depth of independence they need to succeed, both in the moment and in the future. An indulgent parent regularly does for their children what they could and should learn to do for themselves. To quote a school principal friend of ours, “Hope those parents have a basement in their home. Because their kid is never going to leave.” And that would be a true disservice to both the child and their parents.
How do we teach our children to be resilient in the face of failure?
One of the most effective ways to teach children to be resilient is to help them build their self-efficacy. Think of self-efficacy as your kid’s no-parent-needed belief in their own capabilities to control their personal performances and, in turn, the events that affect their life. It’s important to remember that self-efficacy and self-esteem are not the same thing. Yes, it’s important that your child builds a strong sense of self-esteem, but they’ll need much more than good feelings to truly make it today.
This means parents need to stop trying to pump up their child’s self-esteem by telling them they are good at everything. They’re not. They do not deserve a fancy trophy for simply participating. Any message we give our kids other than some people excel because they are better prepared—more willing and able—is an inaccurate and potentially dangerous lie. Instead of placebo trophies for everyone, give your kids words of encouragement, high-fives and hugs when they do their best. Doing their best and practicing ways to improve will build both their self-efficacy and resiliency. When you do stop for ice cream after the game, recital, concert, race or performance, make it about a fun family tradition and not as a reward. Believe it or not, your child’s ego can handle not always winning and one day they will thank you for teaching them to be resilient. Kids who develop a can-do, self-efficacy, growth mindset from supportive parents are the kind of kids who, after not always winning, still stand with their feet on solid ground and their head in the clouds.
Is there a secret ingredient to a child’s success?
Yes, there absolutely is a secret ingredient to your child’s current and future success. It’s a major player within the environment in which we nurture our children, and it outperforms all other factors. The most powerful influence on a child developing the kind of positive mindset and confident willingness to try new things is . . YOU. That’s right; it’s you. The parents. Specifically, how you parent, commonly and professionally referred to as your parenting style. There is no doubt, when it comes to which parenting style benefits our children most, authoritative is the winner.

Be A Flu Fighter: Important Info About the Influenza Vaccine
by Pediatric Associates
The influenza vaccine is a vital tool in protecting not only yourself but also the people around you from the dangers of the flu. Each year, the flu causes millions of illnesses, hospitalizations, and even deaths. Fortunately, the annual flu vaccine can help prevent the spread of this contagious virus, reduce the severity of symptoms if you do get sick, and safeguard those who are at the highest risk of complications.
Who is at the Highest Risk?
Certain groups are more vulnerable to serious complications from the flu, including:
• Pregnant women: The flu can lead to severe illness in pregnant women and can also harm the developing baby.
• Young children and infants: Children under 5, especially those under 2 years old, are at a higher risk of developing serious flurelated complications.
• People with chronic health conditions: Those with conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease are more likely to experience severe flu symptoms.
• Older adults: People 65 years and older are more susceptible to the flu and its complications due to their weakened immune systems.
By getting vaccinated, you're not only protecting yourself but also helping to protect these high-risk groups by reducing the spread of the virus.
When and Who Should Get the Flu Vaccine?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone aged 6 months and older get an annual flu vaccine, with rare exceptions. It’s especially important for those in close contact with infants under 6 months, as these babies are too young to be vaccinated themselves and rely on herd immunity from those around them.
For first-time vaccine recipients, particularly young children, a second dose is necessary one month after the first to ensure full protection.
Timing is Everything
Flu season typically runs from October through May, with peak activity occurring during the winter months. It’s best to get vaccinated in the fall before flu cases begin to rise.
It’s never too late—getting vaccinated even in the midst of flu season can still provide important protection.
Types of Flu Vaccines
There are different types of flu vaccines available, including the Quadrivalent vaccine, which protects against four strains of the influenza virus. The Quadrivalent vaccine is available in two forms:
• Injection: An inactivated vaccine available for people aged 6 months and older.
• Nasal spray: A live attenuated vaccine available for healthy children aged 2 years and older who prefer this method over the injection.
Take Action Now
Schedule your flu vaccine today. By doing so, you’re taking an important step to protect your health and the health of your loved ones, especially during the busy holiday season when gatherings increase the risk of spreading the flu.
