Summer 2024

progress toward CAMPAIGN GOAL

Dear Friends,

We are so close! As the Tampa Prep community enjoys summer break and begins gearing up for a new school year - the landmark 50th! - our construction partners are similarly picking up speed.

That progress is most obvious from outside, as glass panels now enclose much of the Genshaft & Greenbaum Building of Learning and Discovery. Renovation of the main building’s central core is also underway. Since many of us are not on campus as often throughout the summer months, we are sharing this special edition of the Building Bold Bulletin to keep you up-to-date on our exciting progress!

Now is the time, as we approach the completion of this project, for everyone to get involved. Please encourage your friends - current and alumni parents, Tampa Prep graduates, and others who care about education in our community - to take advantage of the opportunity to build for the future.

The Building Bold initiative has captured the spirit of Tampa Prep. It is expanding and improving upon the physical space that inspires students and teachers to challenge themselves. Always reaching for what’s next, we look forward to a future we can only imagine. Preparing students for a life with a higher purpose than self is as important today as it was when Tampa Prep first opened fifty years ago this fall.

I look forward to seeing you as we open these impressive new facilities in the coming months!

Education has always been extremely important to Mona & Anjan Shah. So when they had concerns about the education their children were receiving in public school, they began to explore other school options for their children, Adin ‘26 and Krisha ‘29, which led them to becoming valued members of our Tampa Prep community.

What kind of an impact has Tampa Prep had on your kids?

Tampa Prep is a wonderful school and community. Our kids are happy to be immersed in an environment that supports academic exploration, critical thinking, teamwork, community, and overall kindness and respect for one another.

What is your favorite thing about the school?

The amazing robotics program and the Tampa Prep philosophy!

What inspired you to become involved with our Building Bold campaign?

Coming from immigrant families, Anjan and I are where we are today because of education. Growing up, we have been lucky to have access to a safe environment where education was a priority and supported by our families and community. Globally, this is not always the case. We are thankful and will always support and prioritize efforts that engage students to learn more and be more! The STEM program at Tampa Prep is already impressive, and the planning and innovation surrounding the Building Bold campaign is exciting. When we first heard about it we were inspired to ask two of our closest friends, Neel and Amy Prakash and Mili and Sachin Patel, to name a science lab together. We were thrilled when they said yes! We cannot wait to see how this impacts the student and community and are happy to be a part of the process.

‘fen’-omenal! something

We’re pleased to share some exciting news first announced at a boys’ basketball game in February: Steve Trundle, an 1986 graduate of Tampa Prep, has made a gift to name “THE FENLON CENTER for ADMISSIONS.” This space will welcome visitors and prospective families as they enter the new Genshaft & Greenbaum Building of Learning and Discovery (BOLD).

Steve was able to play for Joe Fenlon during Joe’s very first three years as Coach of Tampa Prep boys basketball. Things were a lot different back then than they are today, but one thing hasn’t changed – basketball seasons were marked by the rivalry with Berkeley Prep.

Steve believes that the core values he learned from Joe Fenlon, which he calls the Fenlon Values, have been essential to his success in his life after Tampa Prep. In his own words, Coach Fenlon taught him “perseverance, competitiveness, self-responsibility, leadership, attention to detail, and humility – all bundled up inside of something else that is also very important, which is a sense of humor.”

Our fundraising team, led by Ki Perry, and our Board of Trustees worked with Steve to find a way to recognize Joe’s everlasting impact on the Tampa Prep culture through the Building Bold campaign, with an eye toward how we might also further advance and emphasize these Fenlon Values over time across our entire community.

Tampa Prep is eternally grateful, to Steve for this opportunity to honor one of the people who has made the School what it is, and to Joe for his leadership by example, which is still felt by his students, players and colleagues every day… more than 30 years after he coached a young Steve Trundle.

Huge thanks to our Donors!
