Picnics at the ready - it's Illyria time at Cardigan Castle! This year with four great outdoor theatre shows for summer 2015 The Three Musketeers, Iolanthe, The Sorcerer's Apprentice and The Taming Of The Shrew. A showcase of Welsh talent takes place in Beirdd a Chantorion at Cardigan Castle on 25th June, whilst our friends 9Bach join us fresh from winning 'Album of the Year' at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in Cardiff - we look forward to celebrating this with them on the 25th July when they appear alongside the magnificent Bellowhead at Cardigan Castle. Several of Mwldan's touring productions hit the road this autumn - the beautiful Indian / Welsh collaboration that is Ghazalaw, some spooky ghost stories in Mappa Mundi's Still Life, a celebration of welsh traditional music in Songchain 2, and Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita's solo tours travel across the UK pushing great Welsh product out to the rest of the world.

Set in a busy call centre selling sex toys, this is a bitter-sweet comedy. Beneath the cheerful customer service and banter, four very different women nurse their own desires and disappointments. Their gentle and innocent manager Mr Causeway attempts to diffuse the tension between his staff while suppressing a longstanding crush on one of the girls. It’s a combustible situation as personality clashes and brooding tensions rise in this hilarious new play about sex, love and motherhood. SEAN HUGHES: MUMBO JUMBO Throughout his life, multi award winning comedian Sean Hughes has been battling to stay on the right side of sanity. This is because in middle age he’s realised that the two sides of his brain are in constant conflict. There is common sense against mumbo jumbo and mumbo jumbo seems to have the upper hand. The show consists of stories including being serenaded at the break of dawn by Robert Smith, trekking mountain gorillas in Rwanda and coming to the conclusion that he will never have a proper conversation with his dear mum. Krissi Bohn (Coronation Street) performs this powerful, poetic and heart-wrenching play – bringing to life the 51 sharply etched characters who retell the experiences of this young woman. BENDRIX Well-known on the UK folk scene for his work with Bellowhead and Faustus, Benji Kirkpatrick embarks on a new solo project, reinterpreting the songs of Jimi Hendrix; stripping back the layers of guitar, the psychedelia and the era, revealing the songs in their pure form. Remembered for his pioneering, exceptional ability as a guitarist, on (and off) stage antics, Hendrix’s legacy extends to a wealth of great songs. Leaving behind the guitar altogether (Hendrix did that rather well…), Benji tackles his material on bouzouki, banjo and mandolin and will perform the songs of Hendrix like you’ve never heard them before. DOUG SCOTT’S EVEREST: THE HARD WAY 40TH ANNIVERSARY LECTURE Autumn 2015 will mark the 40th anniversary of the first ascent of ‘Everest: The Hard Way’, when the late Dougal Haston and Doug Scott made the first ascent of the mountain’s massive South West Face. In this special lecture Doug will tell of the epic expedition and climb, how his life led up to this defining moment and where it took him upon his return from the summit. This is a brand new lecture for the anniversary, lavishly illustrated with Doug’s celebrated mountain photography will provide a very personal account of this legendary first ascent. By Stephen MacDonald This moving and intriguing play tells the story of the friendship formed between World War I poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen during their time together at Craiglockhart Hospital for nervous diseases. When Owen died in 1918, aged 25, only five of his poems had been published, yet he became one of the most significant poets of the twentieth century. His war poetry, encapsulated the physical and mental anguish of his terrible personal experiences. Siegfried Sassoon’s influence and friendship had an enduring impact on Owen and his work and the play includes extracts from their letters and poems, which as Owen himself said are about "war and the pity of war". Many have tried, resulting in labels such as Folk, Rock, Soul, Folk Funk and Americana; all of which somehow miss the mark. But sometimes music doesn’t need a defining genre and with the ability to articulate a sense of the bigger picture, Martyn’s music and social commentary manage to empower and speak for many. His songs are pictures, and stories, and feelings all put to music and delivered by a master craftsman. Autumn 2015 will mark the release of Martyn’s brand new studio album, and he’ll be showcasing these new songs, along with other familiar and much loved material. The Apprentice is told to fill a bath with buckets of water and has the bright idea of using magic to make a broom do the job for him. When the bath is full he realises he does not know how to stop the broom fetching water. In desperation he saws it in half, but this is just the start of everything spiralling out of control! This show features breathtaking magical illusions, non-stop laughter and more water then you have EVER seen in a play before!

Everyone wants to marry mildmannered Bianca. No-one wants to marry her acid-tongued older sister Kate. Their father won’t let anyone marry Bianca until a husband can be found for Kate. But no-one knows anyone mad enough to take on Kate – until Petruchio comes to town. What happens when a loudmouthed braggart meets a woman who suffers no fools when neither is ever lost for words? The opera’s theme is liberty, as exemplified in the struggle against Austrian occupation led by the Swiss archer and patriot Guillaume Tell: in the opera’s most famous scene, Tell shoots an apple from his son’s head, a feat that inspires his countrymen to revolt. The exciting young Italian director Damiano Michieletto makes his debut with what promises to be a spectacular and thoughtprovoking production. Kenneth MacMillan’s famous version of Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy set to Prokofiev’s magnificent score returns to open the 2015/16 Royal Opera House Live Cinema Season. This Romeo and Juliet is rich in the swaggering colour of Verona street life and in sword fights and celebrations, but MacMillan’s focus is always on the complex emotions of the young lovers – especially on Juliet as she journeys through the delirious happiness of first love to a shocked, adult perception of her fate. Juliet is one of the most coveted of all ballerina roles and as MacMillan’s ballet enters its 50th year it resonates as deeply with audiences today as when it was first seen half a century ago.

Often considered a perfect opera, Le nozze di Figaro represents Mozart’s genius at its most lively and delightful. Based on a play that was originally banned for its political content, the fast-moving libretto creates realistic characters made even more human by Mozart’s outstanding music. David McVicar’s popular staging of this comedy returns in the hands of the leading British conductor Ivor Bolton. The cast is led by the star bass Erwin Schrott, who has sung the role to great acclaim at Covent Garden before, partnered with star Romanian soprano Anita Hartig in the role of Susanna.

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

Cleopatra, the alluring and fascinatingly ambiguous Queen of Egypt, has bewitched the great Mark Antony, soldier, campaigner and now one of the three rulers of the Roman Empire. When Antony quarrels with his fellow leaders and throws in his lot with Cleopatra, his infatuation threatens to split the Empire in two.

Take one pair of estranged twin brothers (both called Antipholus) and one pair of estranged twin servants (both called Dromio), keep them in ignorance of each other and throw them into a city with a reputation for sorcery and you have all the ingredients for theatrical chaos. One Antipholus is astonished by his foreign hospitality; the other enraged by the hostility of his home town. The Dromios, caught between the two, are soundly beaten for obeying all the wrong orders.

The third of our Roman Tragedies, Antony & Cleopatra picks up Antony’s story many years after Julius Caesar. Virtue and vice, transcendent love and realpolitik combine in Shakespeare’s greatest exploration of the conflicting claims of sex and power, all expressed in a tragic poetry of breath-taking beauty and magnificence. Othello is the greatest general of his age. A fearsome warrior, loving husband and revered defender of Venice against its enemies. But he is also an outsider whose victories have created enemies of his own, men driven by prejudice and jealousy to destroy him. As they plot in the shadows, Othello realises too late that the greatest danger lies not in the hatred of others, but his own fragile and destructive pride. After more than a decade working in film and television on projects from Star Wars to Holby City, Hugh Quarshie returns to the RSC to play Shakespeare’s Othello. The production is directed by Iqbal Khan (Much Ado About Nothing, 2012).

Henry IV is dead and Hal is King. With England in a state of unrest, he must leave his rebellious youth behind, striving to gain the respect of his nobility and people. Laying claim to parts of France and following an insult from the French Dauphin, Henry gathers his troops and prepares for a war that he hopes will unite his country. RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran continues his exploration of Shakespeare’s History Plays with Henry V performed in the 600th anniversary year of the Battle of Agincourt. Following his performance as Hal in Henry IV Parts I & II Alex Hassell returns as Henry V.

James Levine conducts the first Met revival of Wagner’s Tannhäuser since 2004, seen in Otto Schenk’s 1977 production. Johan Botha sings his first company performances of the demanding title role, in a cast that also includes Peter Mattei as Wolfram, his second Met Wagner role; Günther Groissböck as the Landgraf; and Eva-Maria Westbroek as Elisabeth and Michelle DeYoung as Venus, the human and divine rivals for Tannhäuser’s affection. Josephine Sowden was awarded the Gold Medal at the 2013 National Eisteddfod for her video ‘The Lilies of the Field’ and since then has continued to make work which investigates the inherent underlying madness of modern humanity. Using digital media, her projects explore the ‘Fall of Man’ triggered by the birth of belief in a single, all powerful God and the rise of Patriarchy, and how both altered the evolution of the Earth and the human race. HYNT A NATIONAL ACCESS SCHEME HYNT CYNLLUN MYNEDIAD CENEDLAETHOL We are now part of a national accessibility scheme called Hynt, which will eventually replace the existing CEA card scheme at Mwldan. The benefits of this new scheme will be applicable to live events, live broadcasts and film screenings. Hynt cardholders are entitled to a ticket free of charge for a personal assistant or carer at Mwldan and all the theatres and arts centres participating in the scheme. Visit hynt.co.uk or www.hynt.cym to find a range of information and guidance about the scheme. You can also find out whether you or the person you care for are eligible to join the scheme and complete an application form. Alternatively, please contact our Ticket Office on 01239 621200 to speak to a member of staff about Hynt at Mwldan.
