Welcome to our summer programme, we will be bringing

Croeso i’n rhaglen haf,

you a selection of brilliant music, comedy and outdoor theatre events in the stunning grounds of Cardigan Castle over the coming months. We kick start the season with a weekend of comedy: award winning Mark Steel’s new show Every Little Thing’s Gonna Be Alright followed by two evenings of comedy double bills from Lou Sanders + Ed Gamble then Matt Forde + Glenn Moore. We’re delighted to host Gŵyl Fawr Aberteifi again this year at Mwldan and the Castle. The Grand Closing Concert will take place at the Castle for the first time this year featuring Tra Bo Dau and Ar Ôl Tri. The music continues into July, with a group of reggae greats paying homage with Legend: The Music of Bob Marley. We have a very special evening of Welsh music curated by DJ Huw Stephens and headlined by the scorching hot Gwenno with Omaloma and Serol Serol. Into August we have a selection of classic Illyria productions with The Pirates of Penzance, The Hound of the Baskervilles and Dr Dolittle.

Dechreuwn y tymor gyda phenwythnos o gomedi: sioe newydd lwyddiannus Mark Steel Every Little Thing’s Gonna Be Alright gyda dwy noson i ddilyn o raglenni dwbl gan Lou Sanders + Ed Gamble ac yna Matt Forde + Glenn Moore. Mae’n bleser gennym groesawu Gŵyl Fawr Aberteifi i’r Mwldan ac i’r Castell eto eleni. Oriel Mwldan is curated in partnership with Oriel Davies, Newtown. The gallery is open every day 10am - 8pm (from 5pm on a Monday during term time) and admission is free. Interested in direct visual representations of a light driven process Sera Wyn Walker’s practice uses early camera-less photography techniques as a means of regaining something lost through technological advancements in photography. ‘Through camera-less photography techniques, I bring back that direct connection with the environment. There is a trace of the object in the image, one that is both of and from the landscape’. Please join us for the opening of this exhibition on 21 July at 6.30pm

Gyda diddordeb mewn cynyrchiadau gweledol uniongyrchol proses a yrrir gan olau, mae ymarfer Wyn Walker yn defnyddio technegau cynnar ffotograffiaeth heb gamera fel cyfrwng i ailennill rhywbeth caiff ei golli drwy symudiadau technolegol ymlaen mewn ffotograffiaeth. ‘Trwy dechnegau ffotograffiaeth heb gamera, byddaf yn dod yn ôl â’r cysylltiad uniongyrchol hwnnw â’r amgylchedd. Mae ‘na olrhain o’r goddrych yn y ddelwedd, un sydd ynghylch y dirwedd ac o’r dirwedd.’ Ymunwch â ni ar gyfer agoriad yr arddangosfa hon ar 21 Gorffennaf am 6.30pm

Teimlo Llais is an interactive installation comprising a fabric quilt, a ceramic quilt and the voices of women speaking in Welsh. The exhibition is a culmination of the research and development project Llais Menywod in 2016 which highlighted the need for the women’s voice to be heard. The focus on touch and sound makes the exhibition suitable for blind and partially sighted people. penny d jones is an artist who feels that the Welsh language and women’s issues are paramount.

Mae Teimlo Llais yn osodwaith rhyngweithiol sy’n cynnwys cwilt defnydd, cwilt ceramig a lleisiau menywod yn siarad yn Gymraeg. Mae’r arddangosfa hon yn anterth y prosiect ymchwil a datblygu ‘Llais Menywod’ yn 2016 a amlygodd yr angen i leisiau menywod cael eu clywed. Mae’r ffocws ar gyffwrdd a sain yn gwneud yr arddangosfa hon yn addas ar gyfer pobl ddall a phobl sy’n rhannol ddall. Mae penny d jones yn artist sy’n teimlo bod yr Iaith Gymraeg a Lleisiau Menywod yn hollbwysig.

Gŵyl ddiwylliannol Gymraeg flynyddol tref Aberteifi yw’r Ŵyl Fawr - wythnos lawn o weithgaredd yn cynnwys cerddoriaeth, barddoniaeth a dawns. Sefydlwyd yr Ŵyl ym 1952 fel Eisteddfod lled-genedlaethol – yn gam ar y ffordd rhwng Eisteddfodau bach lleol a’r Eisteddfod Genedlaethol. Yn dilyn digwyddiadau hynod lwyddiannus 2017 bydd yr Ŵyl yn dychwelyd i Theatr Mwldan a Chastell Aberteifi, a chynhelir y Cyngerdd Mawreddog i gloi yn y Castell am y tro cyntaf eleni, gyda gwasanaeth bore Sul cyn hynny am 10yb yng Nghapel Mair. Gŵyl Fawr Aberteifi is Cardigan’s annual Welsh language festival which involves a week long celebration of music, verse and dance. The festival was first established in1952 as a semi National Eisteddfod - a stepping stone for competitors between local Eisteddfods and the National Eisteddfod. Following the highly successful events of 2017 the Festival will return to Theatr Mwldan and Cardigan Castle, with the Grand Closing Concert being held at the Castle for the first time this year, preceded by a Sunday morning service at 10am in Capel Mair.

Bydd 60 o blant a phobl ifanc y cylch yn ein diddanu gyda sioe wreiddiol wedi ei hysgrifennu ar gyfer yr achlysur - gyda chast rhagorol o sêr y dyfodol, mae’r sioe hon bob amser yn un o uchafbwyntiau’r wythnos. A Welsh language musical performed by local youth group Criw CICA. This talented company of 60 children and young people will entertain with an original musical written for the occasion – with a superb cast of up and coming stars this is always a highlight of the week.

Daw’r cystadlu i ben gyda chystadleuaeth Y Rhuban Glas i unawdwyr dros 25 oed. Competitions will start in earnest in the Theatre at 5pm on Friday and at 1pm on Saturday with the Saturday evening session starting at 6pm. Competitions on Friday will include music and dance with the Chairing Ceremony held at 8pm. Saturday will be an opportunity to enjoy choral singing at its best with a number of choral classes culminating in one overall winner to be declared Festival Choir on the Saturday evening. The final competition will be the highly anticipated Blue Riband competition for soloists over 25 years old.

Tra Bo Dau Rhys Meirion ac Aled Wyn Davies – dau lais arbennig ac unigryw, ac eto dau lais sy’n cydblethu’n berffaith â’i gilydd. Mae nhw’n denoriaid direidus sy’n rhannu synnwyr digrifwch yn ogystal â chariad mawr at gerddoriaeth. Mae’r ddau yn enwau cyfarwydd iawn i gynulleidfaoedd Cymru a’r byd yn sgil eu gyrfaoedd unigol fel unawdwyr ac fel dau aelod o Tri Tenor Cymru. Rhys Meirion and Aled Wyn Davies – two distinct and unique voices which complement each other perfectly. Their shared sense of humour and mischief is matched only by their lifelong love of music. Both tenors have solo careers in their own rights as well as being members of the Three Welsh Tenors and are well-known throughout Wales and the world.

Ar Ôl Tri Arweinydd Conductor: Emyr Davies Cyfeilydd Accompanist: Meinir Jones-Parry. Dechreuodd Ar Ôl Tri ddeg mlynedd ar hugain yn ôl fel grŵp bach o ddeg, gan ganu caneuon digyfeiliant o wahanol arddulliau. Erbyn hyn yn griw o 30 aelod, maent yn cystadlu’n rheolaidd mewn eisteddfodau cenedlaethol, yn ogystal â pherfformio mewn nifer o gyngherddau elusennol. Ar Ôl Tri started life thirty years ago as a small group of ten, singing only unaccompanied songs of varied styles. Now boasting 30 members they regularly compete in eisteddfodau cenedlaethol, as well as performing numerous charity concerts.

Welsh singer-songwriter Gwenno headlines, following the release of her latest album Le Kov. “It’s about having to accept and respect the nuances that make us all different and discovering that all of our stories share the same truth.” Le Kov follows her critically acclaimed Welsh language record Y Dydd Olaf (which won Welsh Music Prize and Best Welsh Album at the 2015 National Eisteddfod). Like Y Dydd Olaf it’s a bold statement about the importance of protecting minority languages. Le Kov is entirely in Cornish, Gwenno’s ‘father’ tongue. MAYA YOUSSEF ‘The war started in my homeland in 2011. From that point on making music was no longer a choice, it was a crucial means to express and come to terms with intense feelings of loss and sadness from seeing my people suffer and my land destroyed. On a hot summer’s afternoon in London in 2012 I was watching the news. I felt overwhelmed, as if I was going to explode, so I held my qanun and ‘Syrian dreams’ came out of me. That was the very first piece of music I wrote’. Virtuoso Syrian qanun player Maya Youssef is a regular on the BBC and was featured at the BBC Proms at The Royal Albert Hall amongst other prestigious venues and festivals. ‘[This music] is a translation of my memories of home and my feelings into music. I see the act of playing music as the opposite of death; it is a life and hope-affirming act. To me music is a healer and an antidote to what is happening, not only in Syria, but across the whole world. I like to think that my music brings people back to humanity and to their heart centres, where no harm can be done to any form of life and where all can exist together in peace.’ ‘Dechreuodd y rhyfel yn fy mamwlad yn 2011. RALPH MCTELL One of the great storytellers, Ralph McTell, is now celebrating more than 50 years on the road. Known for his virtuoso guitar style, he is primarily a prolific and gifted songwriter. With a style that invites you into a unique world, he weaves a narrative that is both significant and poignant. Ralph made his debut in 1968 with the album ‘Eight Frames a Second’ and in 1974 the release of ‘Streets of London’ earned him an Ivor Novello Award. In 2002 he was presented with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. When twins Siegmund and Sieglinde find each other at last, Siegmund promises to release Sieglinde from her forced marriage by killing her husband, Hunding. The god Wotan instructs Valkyrie warrior Brünnhilde to defend Hunding. But, moved by the twins’ mutual devotion, Brünnhilde refuses to obey, forging an alliance with Sieglinde that has far-reaching consequences for them both. Soprano Christine Goerke sings Brünnhilde, tenor Stuart Skelton and soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek are the love-struck twins, and Ring cycle veteran Philippe Jordan conducts. BRASSED OFF WITH THE GOODWICK BRASS BAND

A play about the troubles faced by a colliery brass band, following the closure of their pit in Grimley Yorkshire 1996 with live soundtrack provided by the award winning Goodwick Brass Band.

A talented local cast joins forces with the brass band for this stage version of the 1996 film. The story takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions as we follow their struggles, from empty cupboards and bailiffs at the door to Band leader Danny hiding the fact he has been coughing up blood.

BALLET IN THREE ACTS Natalia Makarova’s production of this 19th-century classic ballet brings an exotic world of temple dancers and noble warriors to life. Marius Petipa’s fantasy, set in legendary India, tells the tale of a temple dancer and the prince who loves her but marries another. The famous, moonlit ‘white act’ – the kingdom of the shades – is a corps de ballet highlight, as multiple images of the prince’s lost love haunt his mind. The choreography allows two opposing ballerinas to shine, while a bronze idol comes vividly to life in a stunning solo. Throughout, the melody and moods of Minkus’s music perfectly match the fluidity and precision of the classical choreography and the drama of the storytelling.

Troilus and Cressida swear they will always be true to one another. But in the seventh year of the siege of Troy their innocence is tested. The Greek army is encamped under the walls of Troy and, at the point at which the play begins, the war has reached stalemate. The Greeks are quarrelling amongst themselves the Trojans are debating the value of continuing the war merely for the sake of keeping Helen. Troilus is much distracted from these military concerns by his love for Cressida, the daughter of a Trojan who has defected to the Greek camp. However, after only one night together they are parted and almost immediately she betrays Troilus. On discovering this, Troilus is plunged into despair and vows revenge.

A group of German construction workers start building a hydroelectric power plant in the remote countryside of south-western Bulgaria. Problems at the site leave the men bored and problems start to arise between them and the locals as they pass the time drinking, harassing local women and flying their German flag. The exception is Meinhard (performed by the non-professional and utterly absorbing actor Meinhard Neumann), who avoids the rest of the workers and slowly befriends the local townspeople. A gentle and restrained tone is mixed with a mounting tension in this interrogation of masculinity and economic imperialism that subverts genres. Dynamix Performing Arts School Summer Workshops / Gweithdai Haf Ysgol y Celfyddydau Perfformio Dynamix

Each summer Dynamix runs a variety of themed workshops which encourage students to have fun through performing and exploring the performing arts. These workshops have a more relaxed feel than the term time classes; making them an ideal way to try Dynamix for the first time. These workshops encourage the students to explore roles, songs and routines through fun games whilst learning technique and being creative at the same time. Non Dynamix students are welcome and activities will include: gingerbread man decorating, face painting, games, singing, acting, dancing Ages 3-4: 10:30-12:30pm £12 per day Ages 5-12: 10:30-3pm £25 per day or £65 for 3 days
