CROESO I RAGLEN NEWYDD THEATR MWLDAN SY’N CYNNWYS EIN RHAGLEN FFILMIAU O 27 RHAGFYR HYD AT 27 MAWRTH A PHERFFORMIADAU BYW HYD AT FEHEFIN 2014. WELCOME TO THEATR MWLDAN’S NEW PROGRAMME WHICH INCLUDES OUR FILM PROGRAMME FROM 27 DECEMBER TO 27 MARCH, AND LIVE PERFORMANCES THROUGH TO JUNE 2014. Erbyn i chi dderbyn hwn, bydd ein rhaglen newydd wedi lansio ar ein gwefan newydd. Gobeithiwn y cewch y cyfle i ddod i’w hadnabod, ei defnyddio’n rheolaidd, a gweld ei bod wedi gwella’n sylweddol. Rydym wedi ceisio ei llenwi â gwybodaeth a’i gwneud yn ddiddorol, a byddwn yn croesawu eich adborth yn ei chylch. Rydym yn falch iawn i ddweud bod ein cynhyrchiad diweddaraf - Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita – wedi bod yn derbyn anrhydeddau gwych. Cafodd albwm cyntaf Catrin a Seckou, sef Clychau Dibon, ei rhyddhau yn Hydref 2013 ac mae wedi ei enwi yn Albwm y Flwyddyn 2013 gan gylchgronau Songlines a fRoots, ac yn ogystal maent wedi derbyn dau enwebiad yng Ngwobrau Gwerin Radio 2 2014 - am y Deuawd Gorau a Thrac Traddodiadol Gorau. Fel arfer, mae’r rhaglen ddiweddaraf hon yn llawn adloniant penigamp i chi ei fwynhau, gan gynnwys ein Gw ˆ yl Ffilmiau’r Mwldan blynyddol sy’n rhedeg o 17-30 Ionawr a bydd yn siw ˆ r o fywiogi eich Blwyddyn Newydd! Dymunwn yn dda i chi ar gyfer 2014 ac edrychwn ymlaen at eich gwahodd i’r Mwldan yn fuan. By the time you receive this, our new programme, we will have launched our new website. We hope you’ll spend some time getting to know it, use it regularly, and find it a significant improvement. We’ve tried to make it informative and interesting, and we’d welcome your feedback on it. We’re very proud to report that our latest production project – Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita – has been gathering some fantastic accolades. Catrin and Seckou’s debut album Clychau Dibon was released in October 2013, and has been named Album of the Year 2013 by both Songlines and fRoots magazines, and they have also received two nominations in the Radio 2 Folk Awards 2014 – for Best Duo and Best Traditional Track. As usual, this latest programme is packed with top entertainment for you to enjoy, including our annual Mwldan Film Festival which runs 17-30 January and will brighten up your New Year! We send our best wishes to you for 2014 and look forward to welcoming you to Mwldan soon.

DON GIOVANNI (MOZART) Mozart’s sublime tragic comedy offers boundless scope for directors, and Kasper Holten has chosen it to follow his directorial debut of Eugene Onegin. He wants to shift the emphasis from Don Giovanni’s sex life into a darker place, showing Giovanni’s womanizing as an attempt to stave off his own mortality. Each woman he seduces represents a life he could have had. Though it is a dark piece, Holten intends to handle it with a light touch and he is working with a superb cast - Mariusz Kwiecien, one of the world’s leading Don Giovannis, Alex Esposito, a fresh, vigorous Leporello and acclaimed French soprano Véronique Gens. Debuting in Wales in March 2014, Dammed Nations is a music tour featuring from Wales singer Siân James & guitarist Gai Toms alongside traditional Nubian frame drummers Nuba Nour from Egypt, collaborating for the first time for what promises to be an enchanting and engaging evening of music from Wales and Nubia. Political decisions and divisions from 1960s continue to shape the current world and in Dammed Nations, voices from two seemingly unconnected communities unite on stage recalling the fates of the village of Capel Celyn in North Wales - lost to the waters of the Tryweryn Reservoir - and the traditional Nubian homelands in Aswan, Egypt drowned with the construction of President Nasser’s High Dam. The concerts will feature solo sets by each of the artists along with a special collaboration featuring songs about Tryweryn and the continuing plight of the Nubian people. (TCHAIKOVSKY) First staged in St Petersburg in 1890, The Sleeping Beauty is the pinnacle of classical ballet: a perfect marriage of Petipa’s choreography and Tchaikovsky’s music and a glorious challenge for every dancer on stage. It is also The Royal Ballet’s signature work. To mark the Company’s 75th birthday in 2006, Monica Mason and Christopher Newton revitalized its landmark 1946 production, which re-established Petipa’s choreography as recorded by Imperial Ballet régisseur Nicholas Sergeyev, to a scenario and staging developed by Ninette de Valois herself, founder of The Royal Ballet. With Oliver Messel’s gorgeous original designs wonderfully re-imagined by Peter Farmer, and additional choreography by Anthony Dowell, Christopher Wheeldon and Frederick Ashton, today’s Sleeping Beauty not only captures the mood of the original but shows that this is very much a living work for The Royal Ballet, growing and changing with the Company while celebrating its past. A rare chance to hear South African guitarist Derek Gripper perform solos and duos with his good friend Welsh guitarist Gerard Cousins on a stunning musical journey from Wales to Africa and the world. Both musicians draw on the ancient traditions of their homelands, fusing them with their classical training and techniques for an evening of music that promises some staggering performances from two of the most original and imaginative musicians around. Derek is in the UK at the invitation of classical guitar great John Williams who upon hearing his latest CD “One Night on Earth: Music from the Strings of Mali” immediately invited Derek to perform alongside him and John Etheridge in London. Featuring music by kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté, Derek has successfully managed to fit the music of the 21 string African Harp onto the 6 strings of the guitar. Songlines Magazine called this “a staggering achievement” selecting the CD as a Top of the World album in March 2013. DREAMSCAPE A tapestry of music...a woven dream of dance! The energetic Dreams Dance School run by Victoria Atkinson is based in Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan. This show is a vibrant example of the dance genres offered: from Ballet & Jazz to Tap & Street; so there is something for everyone.

Claire Jones has performed throughout the UK at major music festivals and concerts. She has played as concerto soloist with the English Chamber Orchestra, European Union Chamber Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra, National Youth Strings Academy and Welsh Sinfonia.

The tracks lead us on a journey evoking emotions, featuring many well known songs both old and new. The live music, arranged especially for Dreams is performed by Katina & Friends.

From 2007 to 2011, Claire was Official Harpist to HRH the Prince of Wales and regularly performed for the Royal Family and distinguished guests at the Royal Palaces. She has been soloist with conductor Maesto Gergiev and the Marlinsky Theatre Ballet and has given concerts in the USA and regularly appears on major TV and radio networks in the UK and America. Claire is passionate about promoting her instrument, in particular encouraging youngsters to play the harp through her workshops in schools and in community groups. She is an ambassador for The Prince of Wales’s Children and the Arts Foundation.

THE WINTER’S TALE (WHEELDON) Following his delightful full-length ballet Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Christopher Wheeldon continues his highly successful collaboration with designer Bob Crowley and composer Joby Talbot to create his first ballet based on a Shakespeare play, the late romance The Winter’s Tale. The story follows the destruction of marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child, and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet through remorse and regret – and after a statue comes miraculously to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation. It is powerful material for ballet, with a story that allows for the portrayal of intense emotions between and within the characters, and the opportunity for the Company to create not just new central characters but the whole world around them. To mark the occasion, Bella is taking the party on the road with her band The Midnight Watch, and embarking on an epic adventure to visit thirty of her favourite venues, celebrating her six solo albums to date. One of the most creative, prolific and original singers in the UK, Bella Hardy’s captivating voice inhabits her characters and spins her stories with an equal balance of strength and sensitivity. With fiddle in hand, she presents folk songs in the best tradition; not as antiquated museum pieces, but as relevant and very human artworks. Four time nominee at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, and winner of Best Original Song in 2012 for The Herring Girl, her own songs range in subject matter from fairytales to working class history, via childhood nostalgia, myth, murder and the human condition, touching on both the fantastical, story telling elements of Kate Bush, and the lovelorn songwriting craft of Carole King. STEPHEN WEST: DRAW BREATH Stephen West’s works are neither realistic nor abstract but suffused with the energy and motion of the drawn line and rhythmic mark, whether in two dimensions or in sculpture. In response to the recent threat of the airborne spore from Europe which kills ash trees, West has been working on large drawings recording a year’s cycle of ash trees round his home in Llangadfan. Also on display here are a collection of satirical and surreal drawings of meetings, some referring to Picasso’s great anti-war masterpiece ‘Guernica’. Nid yw’r darnau gwaith Stephen West yn realistig nac yn haniaethol, ond yn llawn egni a mudiant y llinelliad a’r marc rhythmig, naill ai mewn dau ddimensiwn neu mewn cerfluniaeth. THOM MARTIN: WUNDERKAMMER Oriel Mwldan welcomes artist Thom Martin to the gallery space. Primarily a printmaker, Martin’s work extends beyond the page into 3D object based art. The artists practice is highly investigative; he explores ideas of audience interaction and visual perception, encouraging participation between his work and the public. He invites viewers to explore his work through a hands-on approach and is interested in both the physicality involved in moving the presented objects and the metal stimulus required in participating. This exhibition presents a bright, abstract array of works bringing together interaction, abstraction and object based theories into a collection that can be manipulated by the viewer. HELEN BOOTH: INSTALLATION After exhibiting in the gallery in 2007 we welcome back Helen Booth to Oriel Mwldan. Booth is a drawer, painter and installation maker who’s practice embraces the versatility of the line. In 2012 she was awarded the prestigious Pollock Krasner Award for her work on paper. This exhibition features recent work and predominantly explores ideas of materiality through the layering. The artist builds up impulsive, expressive marks which are then stripped back to build space and texture into the works. This experimental overworking of a surface introduces hidden areas to her creations which Booth sees as key to her practice.
