We are thrilled to announce an amazing summer season at Cardigan Castle, which Mwldan is presenting in partnership with our friends at the Castle. KT Tunstall confirmed her appearance with the words ‘love a castle!’, and it seems you all feel the same way as tickets have been flying off the shelves. Her show on 13 July is heading for a total sell-out so if you’re planning on coming, book now! Mwldan last worked with Billy Bragg when we produced his Wales tour in 2009 to mark the 25th anniversary of the 1984/85 Miners’ Strike. His return to Cardigan is well overdue, and we’re delighted to welcome him to the Castle for the first time on 24 July. For the second time, we’ve invited the pioneering music force that is Huw Stephens to curate an evening of Welsh music at the Castle on 27 July, and he’s chosen an absolute corker of a line-up for us. Charlotte Church’s Late Night Pop Dungeon was listed as a highlight for many at the festivals of 2016, and she subsequently toured the show leaving speechless audiences in her wake (“words cannot do this event its justice, just go and experience it for yourself”) but now only performs it for extra special occasions! CCLNPD will be joined by Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard and Adwaith.

And there’s more! We’re set to party and celebrate some of the most enduring and popular music in modern history in the form of Thank You For The Music – The Tribute to ABBA on 12 July and The Magic of Motown on 26 July, plus there’s outdoor theatre from Illyria (Frankenstein, The Tempest & Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves) and, for the first time, we present outdoor cinema with a singalong version Bohemian Rhapsodyall taking place in the stunning grounds of Cardigan Castle. Add to that our regular programme of live shows and cinema at Mwldan itself, and you have an extraordinary few months to look forward to. We hope you’ll enjoy it all!

Dynamix Performing Arts is delighted to bring another musical spectacular to Theatr Mwldan in April 2019. This will be a specially scripted adaptation of the musical fantasy story “Mamma Mia” written by the students and creative team at Dynamix. It follows the story of Sophie, her mum Donna and their search for love and happiness on a far away Greek Island. Featuring many of ABBA’s hit songs such as ‘Mamma Mia’, ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘The Winner Takes it All’ and many more it promises to be a show for all! Following its enormous success at cinemas around the world in 2018, Trafalgar Releasing are delighted to be bringing The King and I back to screens in 2019. Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. With one of the finest scores ever written including Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You, and Shall We Dance, and featuring a company of over 50 worldclass performers, The King and I is a testament to the lavish heritage of gloriously romantic musical theatre. Every Rembrandt exhibition is eagerly anticipated but this major show hosted by London’s National Gallery and Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum was an event like no other. Given privileged access to both galleries the film documents this landmark exhibition, whilst interweaving Rembrandt’s life story, with behind-the-scenes preparations at these world famous institutions. For many, Rembrandt is the greatest artist that ever lived and this deeply moving film seeks to explore the truth about the man behind the legend. Experience the decadence and elegance of 1870s Paris in David McVicar’s spectacular production of Gounod’s best-loved opera. There are many versions of the story of Faust, who trades his soul with the Devil for youth and power, but Gounod’s opera remains one of the most constantly enthralling. Virtuoso leading roles, a large chorus, sensational sets, ballet and an ecstatic finale make this the epitome of theatrical spectacle – the lavish scale of French grand opera is wonderfully in evidence in this production by David McVicar, set in 1870s Paris. Above all, the music includes several of popular opera’s most recognizable numbers, performed by a cast of great international singers and the Royal Opera Chorus. Inspired by his violin, carved but never finished by Richard Howard in 1915, Sam Sweeney has created a live show and album of instrumental music inspired by the Great War. A veteran of the mighty Bellowhead, artistic director of the National Folk Youth Ensemble, founder member of the acclaimed instrumental trio Leveret, and a superb instrumentalist at the forefront of the revival in English traditional music. Joining Sam in the 5-piece band are: Rob Harbron (concertina), Patsy Reid (fiddle), Jack Rutter (Guitar) and Ben Nicholls (bass). ORAN BAGRAIDH Imagine Britain 1300 years ago. What would music sound like and what languages would have been spoken? And to where did the linguistic cauldron of Galloway spread its magic? Oran Bagraidh is the only surviving trace of Galloway Gaelic, a unique and forgotten language that was spoken simultaneously with early Welsh in the region (it was a time when Welsh was spoken up through Cumbria, Galloway and even as far as Glasgow). For the first time in hundreds of years, that ancient poem is performed again alongside the languages of that time, as a live musical and linguistic experience from a time before nations. Supplemented by the inspirational input of a multi-lingual and multi-nation cast of poets and musicians, Oran Bagraidh is a unique journey into the soul of these islands. Close your eyes and imagine a world never before realised on stage. The work features five languages and medieval instruments: lyre and northern triple pipes as well as fiddle, harp, accordion, whistle, percussion, electric autoharp and electronics. This musical play is based on the true story of the two half brothers Ishmael and Isaac, as related in the Old Testament. They shared a father, Abraham, but had different mothers. This lead to considerable friction and eventually Ishmael was disinherited and exiled, becoming a destitute refugee in the desert. Over time, Ishmael’s descendants formed a different race and adopted the Muslim faith. The followers of Isaac are Jews and follow the Jewish faith. Can the rise of religious intolerance be possibly traced back to the two Half Brothers, or has there been a reconciliation?

UNDER MILK WOOD BY DYLAN THOMAS Commissioned by the BBC, and described by Dylan Thomas as ‘a play for voices’, Under Milk Wood takes the form of an emotive and hilarious account of a spring day in the fictional Welsh seaside village of Llareggub. We learn of the inhabitants’ dreams and desires, their loves and regrets. The play introduces us to characters such as Captain Cat who dreams of his drowned former seafellows and Nogood Boyo who dreams of nothing at all. It is a unique and touching depiction of a village that has ‘fallen head over bells in love’. The First Voice narration reveals the ordinary world of daily happenings and events, while the Second Voice conveys the intimate, innermost thoughts of the fascinating folk of Llareggub. The contemporary face of The Royal Ballet is shown in works from three of today’s leading choreographers. Christopher Wheeldon’s Within the Golden Hour, set to music by Vivaldi and Bosso, is lit with rich colours suggestive of sunset. Crystal Pite’s Flight Pattern uses a large dance ensemble and Górecki’s music from his Symphony of Sorrowful Songs for a poignant and passionate reflection on migration. Between them, a premiere by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, created for The Royal Ballet, brings the contemporary truly up-to-date. We are delighted to present a collection of four short films based on the Cardi Bach Railway, which ran from Whitland to Cardigan between 1886 - 1963. The line was noted for its rural nature, attractive scenery and severe gradients. For many in the area, the line was the focus of the local community, gaining the nickname the Cardi Bach. Earmarked for closure under the Beeching Axe, the line ceased operation on the 27th May 1963. The closure marked a change in a whole way of life and the end of an era. Included is a film by Dr George Penn documenting the last journey of the train in 1962, a film which shows views from onboard, another that details the journey of a passenger from Carmarthen to see her family in Eglwyswrw and another that shows the line in full operation in 1957. Since its 1965 premiere with The Royal Ballet, Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet has become a modern ballet classic. The choreography captures the emotions of the young couple as they fall in love, despite the barriers that finally bring about the story’s tragic end. VAN GOGH & JAPAN “I envy the Japanese” Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. In the exhibition on which this film is based - VAN GOGH & JAPAN at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam - one can see why. Though Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan it is the country that had the most profound influence on him and his art. One cannot understand Van Gogh without understanding how Japanese art arrived in Paris in the middle of the 19th century and the profound impact it had on artists like Monet, Degas and, above all, Van Gogh. Visiting the new galleries of Japanese art in Paris and then creating his own image of Japan – through in-depth research, print collecting and detailed discussions with other artists – Van Gogh’s encounter with Japanese artworks gave his work a new and exciting direction. THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR Double-meanings, disguises and dirty laundry abound in The Merry Wives of Windsor as Sir John Falstaff sets about improving his financial situation by wooing Mistress Page and Mistress Ford. But the ‘Merry Wives’ quickly cotton on to his tricks and decide to have a bit of fun of their own at Falstaff’s expense. Directed by Nicole Charles and Elle While, and staged at the beautiful and iconic Globe Theatre in London, this new production of The Merry Wives of Windsor will be broadcast live to cinemas and will feature exclusive behind-thescenes insights into the play.

As a Tiger in the Jungle tells the real-life story of three performers from Nepal, trafficked into circuses as children and into a life of slavery. Using spoken word, movement, circus and ceremony, they tell the story of how, against all odds, they survived their childhood and created their own destiny, using the skills learnt in captivity in a positive and empowering way. This is an international production partnership between prize-winning director Sverre Waage, (Cirkus Xanti, Norway) and creative producer Ali Williams (co-founder and former artistic director of nofitstate, Wales). Gŵyl ddiwylliannol Gymraeg flynyddol tref Aberteifi yw’r Ŵyl Fawr - wythnos lawn o weithgaredd yn cynnwys cerddoriaeth, barddoniaeth a dawns. Sefydlwyd yr Ŵyl ym 1952 fel Eisteddfod lled-genedlaethol – yn gam ar y ffordd rhwng Eisteddfodau bach lleol a’r Eisteddfod Genedlaethol. Eleni eto bydd yr Ŵyl yn cael ei chynnal yn Theatr Mwldan a Chastell Aberteifi. Bydd gwasanaeth bore Sul am 10yb ym Methaniac ac I gloi’r Ŵyl cynhelir cyngerdd mawreddog yn Theatr Mwldan am 7yh. Gŵyl Fawr Aberteifi is Cardigan’s annual Welsh language festival which involves a week long celebration of music, verse and dance. The festival was established in 1952 as a semi National Eisteddfod - a stepping stone for competitors between local Eisteddfods and the National Eisteddfod. This year again the Festival will be held at Theatr Mwldan and Cardigan Castle. The Sunday morning service will be held at Bethania Chapel at 7pm.

BILLY BRAGG Billy Bragg has been a fearless recording artist, tireless live performer and peerless political campaigner for over 35 years. Honoured with the PRS Outstanding Contribution to British Music award at the Ivor Novello awards in 2018, he is regarded a valuable statesman. The intervening three-anda-half decades have been marked by a number one hit single, having a street named after him, being the subject of a South Bank Show, appearing onstage at Wembley Stadium, curating Leftfield at Glastonbury, sharing spotted dick with a Cabinet minister in the House of Commons cafeteria, being mentioned in Bob Dylan’s memoir, writing two non-fiction books (the second, Roots, Radicals & Rockers, was shortlisted for the Penderyn Music Book award) and meeting the Queen.

Through their regular classes, members of the MYPT will develop their skills in Acting and Stage Skills, with opportunities to put their skills into practice through studio presentations and theatrical performances.
