Do you want to know why your spaghetti was squirmy and squishy? And why it had a nasty bitter taste? Because it was WORMS!

In 2011 Illyria raised the bar for the major UK open-air touring theatre companies by becoming the first and only one to add Opera to its regular season. The ticket sales, acclaim and feedback from last season’s The Pirates of Penzance all vouch for its enormous success.

In 2010 Illyria was the first UK open-air touring company to be granted permission to perform the work of Roald Dahl. Following sensational sellouts of James and the Giant Peach and Fantastic Mr Fox Illyria now return with an even BIGGER Dahl classic!

Set on board the warship HMS Pinafore, the opera cheerfully mocks such Great British institutions as Class, Patriotism and the Royal Navy. Josephine the captain’s daughter is in love with Ralph a common sailor, but her father wants her to marry Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty. The couple are caught as they elope from the ship and Ralph is locked in the ship’s dungeon. Only when certain revelations are made by Buttercup, a dockside vendor, can everyone end up freely marrying their true hearts’ loves.

Mr and Mrs Twit never wash, and they live in a smelly old caravan. Bored of playing cruel tricks on each other, they decide to open a circus. They capture a family of monkeys and brutally train them to perform in the ring. The local birds try to help by tricking the Twits into believing the world has turned upside down. Only when the Twits have met a sticky end, and only if the audience plays its part, can the monkeys finally be released.

This wonderful comic opera gets the complete Illyria treatment, faithfully performed by a reduced cast on a beautiful nautical set, and accompanied by a Musical Director on keyboard.

CALENDAR GIRLS Cardigan Theatre, a local community theatre company, presents its annual summer production. When Annie’s husband John dies of leukaemia, she and best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow Women’s Institute members, Cora, Celia Ruth and Jessie, to pose nude with them for an “alternative” calendar, with a little help from hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence. The news of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales. The calendar is a success but Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame. Come and see the ladies of Cardigan Theatre as you’ve never seen them before, and watch out for their own calendar which is being produced in aid of cancer charities! SWAN LAKE The Royal Opera House’s 2012/13 live Cinema Season opens with Anthony Dowell’s production of Swan Lake, created for The Royal Ballet in 1987. Surely the greatest of all Romantic ballets, Swan Lake is a perfect synthesis of choreography and music. Though Tchaikovsky did not live to see the work become a success, his first ballet score is now synonymous with ballet itself, inspiring generations of dancers and crossing over into popular culture. From the earliest days of the Vic-Wells Ballet, Swan Lake has been one of The Royal Ballet’s signature works. In creating this production, Anthony Dowell aimed to return to an authentic version of the choreography created by the great Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov for the Mariinsky Theatre in 1895. Yolanda Sonnabend’s designs draw on the Russian Imperial Court of that period with an inspired blend of historical accuracy and gothic fantasy. The court scenes of Acts I and III have a dark glamour rooted in the opulent style of Carl Faberge, while the famous lakeside ‘white’ acts are rich with mist, shadow and moonlight. Wealthy friend to the rich and powerful, patron of the arts, ostentatious host, Timon of Athens is surrounded by freeloaders and sycophants. He vastly outspends his resources but, finding his coffers empty, reassures his loyal steward that all will be well. When he calls upon his associates, instead of offering help, they hang him out to dry. After a final, vengeful banquet, Timon withdraws to a literal and emotional wasteland, living off roots and pouring curses on a morally bankrupt Athens.

Described by the distinguished violinist Hugh Bean as a musician whose performances are given with intelligence and musical integrity, Christopher Horner has played as a recitalist, chamber musician and freelancer throughout the UK, Europe and Southern Africa. Simon Russell Beale has been described by the Independent as ‘the greatest stage actor of his generation.’ His recent work for the National Theatre includes London Assurance, Much Ado About Nothing and Collaborators, John Hodge’s Olivier Awardwinning new play in which he portrayed Stalin.

Chamber music has been central to Richard Ormrod’s musical life and learning from his early training through exploratory student days and professional development. Recently appointed permanent pianist with the Salzburg Hyperion Ensemble, he performed with these acclaimed artists on tour in the USA. He serves on the piano faculty of the University of Wales in Cardiff and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

When four out-of-condition, middle-aged businessmen from Wales are sent off on a team building exercise in the Lake District they become the first people ever to get shipwrecked on an island on Derwentwater. Bound in fog, menaced by wildlife and cut off from the world with only a single cold sausage between them, tempers soon fray and what should have been a bonding process for Gordon, Angus, Roy and Neville turns into a muddy, bloody fight for survival. Wickedly funny with some naughty one-liners, Neville’s Island infuses comedy with genuine drama as it pokes fun at management, masculinity and middle-age. Clara, a young girl, creeps downstairs on Christmas Eve to retrieve her favourite present. But a mysterious magician, Drosselmeyer, is waiting to sweep her off on a magical adventure. Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker score was commissioned by the director of the Russian Imperial Theatres, following the resounding success of Sleeping Beauty in 1890. Marius Petipa created the scenario – based on a fairytale by E. T. A. Hoffman – and Lev Ivanov provided the choreography. The Nutcracker was first performed in 1892 at the Marinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. It initially had a poor reception, but its combination of enchanting choreography and an unforgettable score have since made it one of the best-loved of all ballets. In Peter Wright’s classic production, the stage sparkles with theatrical magic – a Christmas tree grows before our eyes, toy soldiers come to life to fight the villainous Mouse King and Clara is whisked to the Land of Sweets on a golden sleigh. Tchaikovsky’s score contains some of the best-known melodies in ballet, from the flurrying sounds of the Waltz of the Snowflakes to the dream-like Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the vigorous Russian Dance. Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs draw upon 19th-century images of Christmas, making this a classic production for the festive season. WATERCOLOUR SOCIETY OF WALES The Watercolour Society of Wales was established in 1959 to promote watercolour painting in wales, a tradtion which goes back to the late 18th century.

Cafodd Cymdeithas Dyfrlliw Cymru ei sefydlu ym 1959 i hyrwyddo peintio dyfrlliw yng Nghymru, traddodiad sy’n ymestyn yn ôl i ddiwedd y 18fed ganrif.

To date the Society has around 40 members coming from all walks of life, many being professional artists, but all are talented painters living and working in Wales.

Hyd yn hyn, mae gan y Gymdeithas tua 40 aelod o bob math o gefndir, nifer yn artistiaid proffesiynol, ond i gyd yn beintwyr dawnus yn byw ac yn gweithio yng Nghymru.

The Society’s exhibitions are always varied in style, colourful, and stimulating, depicting the beauty of the landscape and life of Wales and beyond, from the traditional to modern in style. Traditional watercolour now stands alongside new media like acrylics and mixed media in the society exhibitions.

Mae arddangosfeydd y Gymdeithas pob amser yn amrywiol o ran steil, lliw, ac yn ysgogol, yn portreadu harddwch tirlun a bywyd Cymru a thu hwnt, o’r arddull draddodiadol i’r modern. Medi 15 September – Tachwedd 3 November

TOM MATHIAS: FOTOGRAFFYDD BRO This remarkable collection of photographs represents the work of two exceptionally gifted photographers from different eras and very different backgrounds. The originals were taken by Tom Mathias, a self-taught photographer, at the turn of the 20th Century. Using simple equipment, Tom Mathias recorded the daily life around the Cilgerran district of Dyfed, west Wales. Following Mathias’s death in 1940 all his negatives were dumped in an outhouse, where they lay, forgotten, for more than thirty years. James Maxwell Davis, a professional photographer living in the area, discovered them in the 1970s. The glass negatives were in a very poor condition but appreciating the significance of what he had found, Maxwell set about the painstaking task of conserving and restoring the photographs. It is thanks to these efforts that Tom Mathias’s remarkable photographs have been saved for posterity, and we are delighted to bring such a locally important collection to Oriel Mwldan. ::

Cafodd y ffotograffau gwreiddiol eu cymryd gan Tom Mathias, ffotograffydd a ddysgodd ei hun, ar droad yr 20fed Ganrif. Gan ddefnyddio offer syml, recordiodd Tom Mathias bywyd beunyddiol o gwmpas ardal Cilgerran, Dyfed, Gorllewin Cymru. Yn dilyn marwolaeth Mathias ym 1940, cafodd ei holl negatifau eu taflu allan i sied, lle wnaethant aros, heb eu darganfod, am fwy na 30 blynedd. Ym 1970, gwnaeth James Maxwell Davies, ffotograffydd proffesiynol yn byw yn yr ardal eu darganfod. Roedd y negatifau gwydr mewn cyflwr gwael iawn. Roedd nifer wedi torri neu eu niweidio’n rhy wael i’w trwsio. Fodd bynnag, roedd digon wedi goroesi i Maxwell Davies i werthfawrogi pwysigrwydd yr hyn oedd wedi darganfod ac aeth ati i warchod ac adfer y ffotograffau. THIS IS NOT A FILM (U) Jafar Panahi, Mojtaba Mirtahmasb | 2011 | Iran | 75’ There is unlikely to be a wittier, braver, more serious film shown in Britain this year than the 51-year-old Iranian director Jafar Panahi’s This is Not a Film. Made while under house arrest in Tehran using an iPhone and a digital video camera, it’s an act of defiance in the face of the regime of the ayatollahs and President Ahmadinejad. From the mid-90s Panahi became one of the most prominent figures of Iranian, if not global cinema. But his films’ critical attitude towards Iranian society and his comments on public life annoyed the authorities and finally, in December 2010, he was sentenced to six years in jail and banned from making or directing movies, writing screenplays, giving interviews to the media or leaving the country for 20 years. He has been appealing against this sentence ever since, and This is Not a Film was shot in his Tehran apartment as a mocking attempt to adhere to those draconian conditions.
