Membership of Theatr Mwldan is open to individuals of 18 years of age and over and to organisations that support the objectives of the company. Membership costs £2 per year. WELCOME TO OUR NEW PROGRAMME WHICH INCLUDES OUR FILM PROGRAMME THROUGH TO EARLY APRIL, AND LIVE PERFORMANCES THROUGH TO MAY 2012.

We wish you a very Happy New Year and a warm welcome to our new programme for 2012. Our 18th annual Film Festival runs from 27 January to 9 February and we have some real gems for you – including many films with a local angle, and one which hasn't been seen since 1963! See page 28 for the full Festival programme. In December. we installed a brand new digital projector in Mwldan 2 – complete with 3D capability – which means you can now enjoy stunning digital quality in both our screens. We launch our latest production collaboration between two truly world class virtuosos: harpist Catrin Finch (Wales) meets the world’s greatest kora player Toumani Diabete (Mali) and they play Mwldan in March before a small tour of Wales this spring. It’s a great honour indeed for us to be working with such legendary artists. Our thanks as always are also due of course to you, the public and our audiences, for your continued support, through your attendance at events here at Mwldan, and for the public investment in Mwldan which is made from the taxes you pay. Read on - we hope to see you down at Mwldan soon.

FILM FESTIVAL EVENT

In this unique event, a screening of the 1923 silent film Salomé is accompanied by a live performance of a new music score specially written for the film by Charlie Barber and in a threatrical and dramatic twist, the music is performed by four percussionists, playing from two towers on either side of the screen. Salomé, starring the Russian-born actress Alla Nazimova, is a rarely seen artwork of film history adapted from the controversial Oscar Wilde play with an abundance of sumptuously fantastic visuals. It loosely follows the biblical story of King Herod and his desire for his young stepdaughter. It is Salomé’s desire for Jokanaan (John the Baptist) that causes her to dance before Herod. Like Wilde’s play, the film has always been surrounded by controversy, fuelled by an aura of loaded eroticism, and heightened by the melodramatic, highly stylised performances. It is a visual feast, more like a bizarre Art Nouveau-inspired erotic dream than a piece of cinema. The score is inspired by the sounds of traditional Arabian ensembles and features an ‘orchestra’ of percussion played over a dramatic backdrop of vocal settings of psalms sung in Latin and Hebrew. This is a high energy visual and aural feast that could prove to be a once in a lifetime experience. RUTH JENKINS (soprano) AND MATTHEW JENKINS (piano) Ruth is a Bach Kohn Scholar for the RAM/Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata Series and is a member of the prestigious RAM Song Circle, through which she made her debuts at King’s Place and Wigmore Hall. She won the Dame Eva Turner Operatic Award 2010, won first prize in the Jackdaw Vocal Awards 2010 at Wigmore Hall, is the Leith Hill Festival Award Winner 2010, came second in the Clonter Opera Prize 2011, was a prizewinner in the AESS Courtney Kenny English Song Competition and was a finalist in both the Richard Lewis Competition and the Nancy Nuttall Early Music Prize. She has undertaken masterclasses with Angelika Kirchschlager, Robert Tear, Barbara Bonney and Dame Anne Murray. Her programme will include repertoire from English song, French Mélodie and German Lieder. Ruth Jenkins is a Countess of Munster Musical Trust artist. A fusion of two generations and many styles of music amalgamate to form a totally fresh and unique blend of sound. Amazonne are fun, rhythmic and upbeat but at the same time dramatic and romantic. Gaynor Butler and Perryn Colbourn have worked together for 20 years. Gaynor is a classically trained composer who has also played in rock and swing bands. She is technically skilled with multi keyboards, which she plays with sounds melding together with a mystifying wizardry. Perryn’s early influences were from folk music but she soon evolved to singing everything. Her songs are stories – of legends and historical events in addition to love, loss and leaving. She has a powerful voice which can be sweet and mellow one minute, and raunchy the next. Guitarist Harley, 21, and drummer Felix, 24, emerged from the world of heavy metal, bringing strength, verve and dynamics. Harley brings grungy guitar and lyrical lead lines, whilst Felix has a unique style which merges drums and percussion, introducing unusual and ethnic cadences. Amazonne is a unique band, not to miss. supported by Cliff Stapleton Spiro are a remarkable and stunning acoustic 4-piece ensemble who came together through Bristol’s folk scene and developed their very own unique and highly imaginative sound, which echoes, at various points, the work of Steve Reich, Michael Nyman and the Penguin Café Orchestra. The four instruments — violin/viola, acoustic guitar, mandolin and accordion — gyrate around each other in a harmonious fusion of styles, in which traditional English folk meets modern classicism and electronic dance music. Richly textured, utterly compelling, Spiro are a totally unexpected gem – sophisticated and adventutous, intricate and full of momentum. They create hurrying, scurrying soundscapes that sweep majestically with cinematic presence, a wonderful, euphoric, acoustic wall of sound. Their last album Lightbox, released on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label, drew enormous critical acclaim – “positively thrilling” (The Guardian), “staggeringly complex stuff…. breathtakingly moving” (The Word); the release of their new, second album on Real World coincides with their appearance at Mwldan and a full UK tour. Andy Kershaw truly has no off switch. As a teenager, he was promoting major rock gigs. He was Billy Bragg’s driver and roadie one day and presenting Whistle Test and Live Aid the next. A born rebel and a maverick, he’s combined his passion for music with a lunatic curiosity and an instinct for frontline journalism, reporting for the BBC and the broadsheets from the world’s most extreme countries – Iraq, North Korea, Haiti, Angola and Rwanda during the genocide. Andy is among the UK’s most-decorated broadcasters, working for Radio 4 and, for fifteen years as a Radio 1 DJ, where he shared an office with John Peel and legendary producer John Walters. More recently a presenter on Radio 3, he has also worked for the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen. His record collection weighs seven tons. For most of the past twenty-five years he has had a weekly radio show pioneering extraordinary music from all over the world. Whether it applies to foreign adventures, romances, motorcycles, nervous breakdowns or relationships with a piece of music, Andy has always lived by his most reliable maxim: if you’re going to have one, have a big one. L I V E Romeo and Juliet was Kenneth MacMillan’s first full-evening ballet and from its premiere in 1965 has been one of The Royal Ballet’s signature works, popular all over the world. At the beginning of the ballet MacMillan’s crowd scenes teem with life and colour. However, once Romeo and Juliet meet, everything else on stage can only be scenery for their story. Three great pas de deux: the meeting in the ballroom, the balcony scene and the morning after the wedding eloquently convey the narrative: adolescent shyness and fascination; the headlong rush of love declared, and the grief of parting. The final scene in the tomb, a pas de deux with a lifeless partner, is devastating. Nicholas Georgiadis’s earthy Renaissance designs, with some of the original details recently restored, are the perfect backdrop to this tragic tale of ill-starred lovers. Catrin and Toumani are from two very different cultures: the landlocked and mostly flat southern Saharan nation of Mali is one of the poorest in the world yet produces some of the most sublime music on Earth; in contrast, the lush, green valleys and soaring mountains of Wales are familiar to us all.

The harp occupies a vital place in the incredibly rich culture of both nations. The West African harp – the kora – played by Toumani is made from a dried gourd and fishing line; the Welsh harp, played by Catrin, is one of the most iconic symbols of a nation steeped in music. Toumani Diabaté is one of Africa’s most important musicians and widely considered the world’s finest living kora player. A performer of exceptional virtuosity and creativity, his pedigree goes back through 71 generations of kora players, from father to son. He has collaborated with Damon Albarn, Taj Mahal, Bjork and the late, great Ali Farka Touré with whom he won a Best Traditional World Music Album GRAMMY Award in 2006. Catrin Finch is one of Wales’ leading international musical ambassadors. The “Queen of Harps”, Catrin was Royal Harpist to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales from 2000-2004. Her concert appearances with the world’s top orchestras span the globe and she has worked with artists including Bryn Terfel, Sir James Galway and Julian Lloyd-Webber. Catrin’s highly successful recent collaboration with Colombian harp-based band

SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER BY OLIVER GOLDSMITH One of the great, generous-hearted and ingenious comedies of the English language, Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer offers a celebration of chaos, courtship and the dysfunctional family. To come to my house, to call for what he likes, to turn me out of my own chair, to insult the family, to order his servants to get drunk, and then to tell me, “This house is mine, sir”. By all that’s impudent it makes me laugh. Hardcastle, a man of substance, looks forward to acquainting his daughter with his old pal’s son with a view to marriage. But thanks to playboy Lumpkin, he’s mistaken by his prospective son-in-law Marlow for an innkeeper, his daughter for the local barmaid. The good news is, while Marlow can barely speak to a woman of quality he’s a charmer with those of a different stamp. And so, as Hardcastle’s indignation intensifies, Miss Hardcastle’s appreciation for her misguided suitor soars. Misdemeanours multiply, love blossoms, mayhem ensues. This little barmaid though runs in my head most strangely, and drives out the absurdities of all the rest of the family. She’s mine, she must be mine, or I’m greatly mistaken. CARDIGAN ABERTEIFI 900 In this exhibition, the result of Cardigan’s 900th anniversary year, our town’s now famous giant knitted cardigan will be on display at Mwldan, surrounded by a selection of photographic images which came to light when townsfolk were asked to bring their old photographs of the town to scanning and archiving events. The result was a new collection of Cardigan’s photographic heritage, here presented alongside that same heritage depicted in wool. Lisa Hellier, the drivng force behind the giant cardigan, has hand picked the photographic images displayed in this show to complement the cardigan’s images. ::

MALCOLM GWYON: WELSH ICONS Following on from a successful travelling exhibition of North and West Wales, Malcolm Gwyon returns to his home town with an impressive exhibition of portraits. Interests in Surrealism and Pop Art (Dali, Magritte, Warhol, Pollock), and an appreciation of the visual potential to be found in high contrast, grainy photographic images can be detected in the work, but these influences are transformed through a careful balance between ordered procedure and the element of chance. The materials of the artisan; household paints, stencils and masking tape, are harnessed to a modernist technique to produce paintings which are at once starkly graphic, yet thoughtfully constructed. ‘Welsh Icons’ comprises musicians, sports personalities and media celebrities. The sense of national pride which is so self evident on these works has prompted the National Library of Wales to purchase two of Gwyon’s portraits for inclusion in their permanent collection. ::

La Casa Di Dio is the story of ‘the little church,’ built by Italian POWs inside a plasterboard hut in West Wales. After the Italian surrender in North Africa, 1,500 Prisoners of War were shipped to POW Camp 70, in Henllan, near Newcastle Emlyn. The film tells the tale of their incarceration, but also the history of the unlikely relic which they left behind them – a church with candlesticks made from bully beef tins, a dome of concrete and chicken wire and a fresco of ‘The Last Supper’ with paint made from carrots, tobacco, and dye tablets. A beautiful, moving story about war, courage, and friendship. A new Pope is being elected in Rome: the conclave of Catholic Cardinals makes its decision, white smoke issues, but the French Pope-elect (the wonderful, legendary Michel Piccoli) suffers an immediate crisis of confidence. The frustrated, sequestered Cardinals seek secret assistance from a sceptical psychotherapist (played by director/actor Nanni Moretti). The new programme is due for TV transmission early in 2012. In the process of making the new film, Steve Freer uncovered in the BBC Archive some fascinating film, unseen for many years, relating to Cardigan. As part of the Mwldan Film Festival, we are delighted to have been given permission to present just two very special screenings of the archive footage for which we expect demand to be very high, so book your tickets now! Owen was one of the leading television dramatists of the 1960s and is best remembered for his Oscar-nominated screenplay for The Beatles’ film A Hard Day’s Night. Patricia is one of six girls that the cantankerous and witty Pascal Amoretti (Auteuil) is forced to raise on his own after the death of his wife. Educated in Paris and with a svelte, allusive beauty, the 18-year-old Patricia is her daddy’s princess, and definitely ripe for a prince who soon arrives in the form of the swarthy son of a local hardware salesman and his wife - whose attachment to her only child would be potent fodder for Freud.
