WELCOME TO THEATR MWLDAN’S NEW PROGRAMME WHICH INCLUDES OUR FILM PROGRAMME FROM 28 MARCH TO 26 JUNE, AND LIVE PERFORMANCES THROUGH TO AUGUST 2014. Annwyl Gyfeillion,

Dear Friends,

Mae’n bosibl eich bod wedi gweld y newyddion diweddar yn y wasg a’r cyfryngau am doriadau cyllideb i’w cyflwyno gan Gyngor Sir Ceredigion ar gyfer y flwyddyn ariannol sy’n dechrau yn Ebrill 2014. Er gwaethaf ein hymdrechion gorau, credwn yn anffodus y bydd Theatr Mwldan yn dioddef toriad yn ein cyfanswm nawdd uniongyrchol ac anuniongyrchol o Sir Ceredigion o tua 38.6% o’n cynhaliaeth flynyddol oddi wrth yr awdurdod, sy’n gyfwerth â thua £17,500. Rydym wedi gwneud nifer o arbedion cost ac effeithlonrwydd dros y blynyddoedd diwethaf ac wedi datblygu ein ffrydiau incwm cymaint ag sydd yn bosibl, ond nawr mae’n rhaid i ni wynebu’r dasg anodd o ymateb i’r toriad diweddaraf hwn. Nid oes gennym unrhyw opsiwn arall ond i leihau ein cyllideb staffio i gyfateb â’r toriad gan Sir Ceredigion, ond bwriadwn wneud hyn heb fod 'na unrhyw golled i’n hallbwn rhaglenni, nac i chi, ein cwsmeriaid. Byddwn, felly, yn gorfod gwneud rhai addasiadau i’n horiau agor. Byddwn yn parhau i gyflwyno rhaglen o ddigwyddiadau byw a sinema 7 diwrnod yr wythnos fel y gwnawn ar hyn o bryd, fodd bynnag byddwch ond yn gallu archebu tocynnau drwy wasanaeth Swyddfa Docynnau wedi ei staffio yn ystod yr amserau uchod. Bydd ein gwasanaeth archebu ar-lein yn parhau i fod ar gael 7 diwrnod yr wythnos, 24 awr y dydd, ac fe’ch anogwn iddefnyddio’r gwasanaeth hwn gymaint â phosibl a hefyd i fwynhau ein gwefan Byddwn hefyd yn cyflwyno cynyddiad bach ar ein prisiau mynediad sinema 2D o 26 Mawrth (y cynyddiad cyntaf am dair blynedd!), ond ar yr un amser byddwn yn gostwng ein prisiau mynediad ar gyfer sinema 3D (gweler tudalen 29 am fwy o fanylion). Wrth gwrs mae’n anffodus ein bod yn gorfod gwneud y newidiadau hyn, ond gobeithiwn ni fyddant yn cael llawer o effaith ar eich mwynhad o’r rhaglen adloniant a diwylliant y mae’r Mwldan yn ei darparu i gymunedau Gorllewin Cymru.

You may have seen the recent news in the press and media of budget cuts to be imposed by Ceredigion County Council for the financial year starting April 2014. Despite our best efforts, we believe Theatr Mwldan will regrettably suffer a cut in our total direct and indirect funding from Ceredigion of some 38.6% of our total annual support from the authority, equivalent to approximately £17,500. We have made many cost and efficiency savings over the past few years and developed our income streams as much as possible, but we now face the difficult task of responding to this latest cut. We have no other option than to reduce our staff budget by an amount equivalent to the Ceredigion cut, but we intend to do this with no loss of our programme output to you, our customers. We will, therefore, have to make some adjustments to our opening hours. We will continue to present a programme of live events and cinema 7 days a week exactly as we do at present, however you will only be able to book through a staffed Box Office service during the above times. Our online booking service will remain available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, and we would encourage you to use this service as much as possible and also to enjoy our lovely new website. We are also introducing a small increase on our 2D cinema admission prices from 26 March (the first increase for three years!), but at the same time we will be reducing our admission prices for 3D cinema (see page 29 for more details). Of course we regret having to make these changes, but hope they will have little effect on your enjoyment of the precious programme of entertainment and culture that Mwldan provides the communities of West Wales.

THE WINTER’S TALE (WHEELDON) Following his delightful full-length ballet Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Christopher Wheeldon continues his highly successful collaboration with designer Bob Crowley and composer Joby Talbot to create his first ballet based on a Shakespeare play, the late romance The Winter’s Tale. The story follows the destruction of marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child, and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet through remorse and regret – and after a statue comes miraculously to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation. (PART 2) King Henry’s health is failing as a second rebellion threatens to surface. Intent on securing his legacy, he is uncertain that Hal is a worthy heir, believing him to be more concerned with earthly pleasures than with the responsibility of rule. Meanwhile, Falstaff is sent to the countryside to recruit fresh troops. This early Puccini masterpiece makes a welcome return to Covent Garden after an absence of over 20 years, in a new production by Jonathan Kent under the baton of Music Director Antonio Pappano. The exciting Latvian soprano Kristine Opolais sings the title role. A consummate Puccini soprano, Opolais caused a sensation as Madam Butterfly in 2011 and with Manon Lescaut, the bold but impressionable heroine, we will see a very different side of her character. She is matched in star power by Jonas Kaufmann as her lover, Des Grieux, and Christopher Maltman as her cynical brother Lescaut. This is a much anticipated new production, and Kent’s vision of a young girl who faces temptation in the big city will surely resonate with today’s audience.

Illyria’s cast consists of 7 actor - singers and Musical Director on piano, but that does not mean that there has been any reduction to Gilbert and Sullivan’s libretto or score. This most popular of their comic operas revolves around Frederick, an apprentice pirate who was born on 29 February, he falls in love with a girl on land, but can’t leave the ship until his 21st Birthday (not his 21st year)! A show filled with laughter, romance and boatload of memorable songs!

Illyria's production has been adapted from the earliest Robin Hood ballads - predating Chaucer. The drama is written in easy to understand verses and presents lovable characters such as Little John and Maid Marian. First performed in 2007, it remains one of Illyria’s most popular titles. Come and join in the fun as Robin hides from the Sheriff of Nottingham, stealing from the wealthy and give to those in need. You'll definitely laugh, you'll probably cry - and if you're not cheering at the archery competition involving the entire audience then you must be dead. Suitable for all ages 5+.

HELEN BOOTH: INSTALLATION After exhibiting in the gallery in 2007 we welcome back Helen Booth to Oriel Mwldan. Booth is a drawer, painter and installation maker who’s practice embraces the versatility of the line. In 2012 she was awarded the prestigious Pollock Krasner Award for her work on paper. This exhibition features recent work and predominantly explores ideas of materiality through the layering. The artist builds up impulsive, expressive marks which are then stripped back to build space and texture into the works. This experimental overworking of a surface introduces hidden areas to her creations which Booth sees as key to her practice.
