Mentor Tip

A tip from your Lead Mentor

I’ve always had role models growing up but I never had a mentor. Sure, my role models were there to support me through my life but never really seemed to be there when I needed to bounce ideas off of or just needed advice. That’s where a mentor would’ve come in handy, someone to help me navigate life’s various adventures - like my adventure into adulthood or the great adventure that is fatherhood. Just like finding your way on a hike it helps to have a compass and mentors are a kind of “Human Compass.” Mentors can help you traverse the murky waters that you experience throughout life but are especially helpful during your college experience. Finding your own Human Compass can be a daunting task but not impossible; sometimes you just stumble into without realizing what’s happening. Your mentor doesn’t have to be a professor or a staff member, they can be younger than you, identify differently than you, have a different major or career. Does it help if they do? Sure, but it’s not a requirement. The only real requirements is that they have your best interest at heart are ready to point you in the right direction, and most importantly they’re AVAILABLE for you. Once you find your human compass, its important that you are mentorable as your participation in the relationship is just as important. Be vulnerable, honest and open to new ideas. I want to encourage each of you to find a human compass of your own. My mentor has placed an emphasis on me stepping outside of my comfort zone and I’m a better student, employee, brother, father and MAN because of it...thanks Juan. -David Mantiply

Ruby Daniels

Faculty Highlight

About Dr. Daniels

Dr. Daniels is a Professor here at A&M-SA, she joined the JagFam in 2019 and teaches various courses like Principles of Marketing, Marketing Research, Service Marketing and and Marketing Management. We asked Dr. Daniels what her favorite part about being on our campus was and she shared that she loved our "culture of family and student support. Unlike some of the large lecture-hall classes I took as an undergraduate, our small classes allow students and faculty to get to know each other. When I know my students’ interests and career aspirations, I’m better prepared to share information to help them succeed in the future." However it's because of professors like Dr. Daniels that we have this sense of culture and support. Dr. Daniels has been seen making a difference in her classes and welcoming transfer students at the transfer assemblies. Advice for students in the College of Business

Dr. Daniels shares her advice with students in the College of Business, but it can definitely apply to all Jaguars! "Learn the hard stuff! Students often get preoccupied with grades. When I was in college, there were plenty of classes where I earned an “A” but didn’t really learn anything. If you only take easy classes, you won’t develop skills to succeed in a competitive job market. Invest the time and effort in challenging courses so you have skills that are in high demand when you graduate!" How do you hope to see the College of Business grow?

"I'd love to see increased interdisciplinary collaboration. To succeed in business, students need to embrace diverse perspectives. For instance, one semester my marketing students collaborated with journalism students to learn how to pitch story ideas to media outlets. By working with people who have no background in business, our students develop communication skills to help them succeed after graduation." FEBRUARY 2021

Hobbies

Communication is always key to having a successful semester. Life happens and it's important to share that with them, after all they're people too! Dr. Daniels shares the hobby she recently picked up. "I started cooking more during the pandemic. In addition to a deep appreciation for curbside grocery pick-up, I tried one of the meal kit delivery services – and LOVED it! In addition to being convenient and healthy, I enjoy the adventure of experimenting in my kitchen :-)" PAGE 02

Motivation

"My daughter. I am a single mother and have been her whole life. She is the reason I get up and no matter what, I make sure that I do my best to allow her the best life possible. I want her to see that no matter what life throws at you, keep your head up and keep moving forward. It does not matter how long it takes you to complete something as long as you try and give it your best. Don’t give up"

Read about Whitney's idea in creating a group

During a recent zoom session with other transfer students, I got the idea to create a group for us parents to go to and just have someone to connect with. I know the struggle is real, we get tired, have jobs, families, and much more. I want a place to be able to go to and relate to someone who is also going through the same things I am. We can encourage each other, give advice if needed, or just be a listening ear. The option to talk about our day and the possible struggle we are having to complete just one simple assignment because we have a child who also needs our attention. Brylee, my daughter has special needs she motivated to become a special education teacher. I also want to create another place on campus (virtually as well, due COVID-19) that parents who have children with special needs can go to and be able to relate to each other. What are you most excited for here on campus?

I'm excited to get to know people, making new friends, and creating lasting relationships that carry over past my college career. I really want to dig in and get involved with different things so I can get the true college experience. I’m looking forward to the memories I get to create, as well as my degree to show Brylee we did it! FEBRUARY 2021

We also advocate for social justice and the uplifting of Black cultural contributions... during the year we like to participate in community events supporting issues within the Black community."

STUDENT SMALL BUSINESS

Non-Profit San Antonio Black Doula Collective Catherine Millard is a senior majoring in Sociology. She is a fellow transfer student coming from Texas State University. She is currently getting full spectrum doula certified through Doula Trainings International and has also connected with a local doula business here in San Antonio and has successfully apprenticed with them. She has successfully co-founded this non-profit! "The genesis of our group started merely as women who saw the disparities in the community and wanted to come together to help. From there the ball started rolling. According to the CDC Black women are 4-5 times more likely to die in childbirth than women of other races. We know this is partially due to institutionalized racism. This statistic was one of multiple catalysts for us to peruse becoming a nonprofit. San Antonio Black Doula Collective is less than a year old but has big plans for the future that include diaper drives, childbirth education classes, and maybe one day reduced cost/free doula services for those in need."

Supporting is Easy

Whats a doula?

"Support our nonprofit by donating, participating in our popcorn drives, or simply just following us on social media and sharing our information with others. This black history month highlighting the black maternal mortality rate along with other racial disparities is of upmost importance. Mothers are the backbones of communities. Being informed is the first step in taking action."

A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible. "As a full spectrum doula, I also work with individuals trying to conceive and provide postpartum support. My goal as a doula is to support, advocate, and empower birthing individuals."

Tau Sigma Scholarship Recipients 2021

Cheyenne Zavala

Receiving this scholarship is an honor. I really want this to be a testament to other transfer students that our stories matter and what we do on campus is important. Stepping out of your comfort zone can lead you to great things, as Samantha shared I had no idea where Tau Sigma would lead me. I put in an application to be part of the e-board on a whim and it has turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences.

Samantha Muniz When I joined Tau Sigma I had no idea where it would lead me to. I have been able to grow great connections and learn many leadership skills. College is not easy but I always reminded myself to keep going forward. I have gained not only skills to help me succeed in life, but a community of others just like me who were on the same path and want to go far in life. Thank you to everyone who has been there for me along this journey , I cannot express how grateful I am for this organization .
