Department of the Month:
Office of Military Affairs
What events are there that celebrate the month of the military child?
All kinds of events throughout the nation celebrate the month of the military child. Just in San Antonio, we have the Month of the Military Child HemisFair Fun Saturday and the Zoo hosting Military Child days where Military children can receive FREE zoo admission, plus, up to four (4) immediate family members can receive 50% off standard admission.
On Campus Events:
Our campus is hosting a tiedye event where students can tie-dye their shirts with shades of purple. The students will be encouraged to wear their shirts on Friday the 14th to turn the campus purple.
How many military children do we have on campus?
Upwards of 400 dependents
What makes their experienceunique?
Military children are resilient, and courageous and provide unconditional support to their parents who are serving in the U.S. and overseas. On average, these military children move six to nine times during their school years. The month of the Military Child is the time to applaud military children for the daily sacrifices they make and the challenges they overcome.
What resources are available at TAMUSA for military members and dependents?
There are many resources available to military children. Here at A&M-SA, we can assist these dependents in using their military benefits to pay for school. This will allow them to focus on achieving their academic goal without worrying about money.
What did your undergraduate journey look like?
I was a high school dropout, so I never thought I would go to college. I had a girlfriend who encouraged me to take courses at the local tech school and I built up some credits and transferred to a small college in the Georgian mountains. That’s where I got into biology and salamanders, which are the type of organisms I’ve done most of my research on.
What advice do you have for transfer students on campus?
Take the time to build relationships with your professors on campus. Most of us want to help, and it’s a lot easier for us to be helpful when we have an idea of who you are, what your interests and ambitions are, etc.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Spend time with my family, including our pets. Play guitar and piano. Play golf. Go bowling. Go fishing and boating.
What is your title and what department do you work for?
I’m an Associate Professor of Biology and I work for the Department of Life Sciences.
What is the significance of the dept. you work in and how does it help students?
We’re the department that trains the most prehealth students. I’m a former Chair of the Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) and the former TAMUSA Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) Faculty Director. So I have been pretty involved in pre-health initiatives over the years. I think that is some of the most important studentoriented service work I’ve been involved in at TAMUSA. I definitely encourage transfer students coming to TAMUSA to check out HPAC. I really do believe that committee helps a lot for students.
Do you have a favorite place on campus?
There’s an under used courtyard/sitting area behind the Madla Building. Sometimes I go there when I need to think
Hi Jaguars
Welcome to the month of April! We did it, Mid-term season is over. I hope you all feel a weight off of your shoulders as you complete exams/papers.
In case you all did not know, April is Earth month! While it may seem difficult to slow down in the rush of the moment, please take a moment to be outside. Go for a walk, visit a park, plant a tree. Look at the world around you, and I promise you something beautiful will come.
We all call this planet our home, it is only fair we treat it as such. So go outside Jaguars, tis the season of Spring! Watch the flowers bloom before you! (And don’t forget to take some allergy medicine!)
