EDITOR'S LETTER
MY NAME IS MARTIN CALDERON, THE CHAPTER ALUMNI RELATIONS OFFICER AND MAGAZINE EDITOR. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US IN THIS FIRST INSTALLMENT OF THE ALUM-US MAGAZINE, A NEW, YEARLY PUBLICATION ALL THINGS SAN ANTONIO CHAPTER & ALUMNI. WE DEDICATE THIS TO OUR BROTHERS, AT-LARGE AND IN SAN ANTONIO, WHO HOLD OUR COLORS HIGH. THE SAN ANTONIO CHAPTER, OUR ALUMNI BOARD OF TRUSTEES, AND OUR COMMUNITY THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUOUS SUPPORT AND GENEROSITY. THIS IS FOR Y’ALL. I NEVER IMAGED JOINING A FRATERNITY. STARTING MY UNDERGRADUATE EXPERIENCE, I JOINED COUNTLESS ORGANIZATIONS, I FLOATED AROUND AND NEVER FOUND A PLACE TO CALL HOME. 2 YEARS LATER, I MET A WONDERFUL WOMAN, HEATHER LOCKWOOD, SENIOR DIRECTOR OF FIELD OPERATIONS FOR DELTA CHI. SHE PERSUADED ME TO GIVE OUR BELOVED FRATERNITY A CHANCE. IN ALL HONESTY, SHE HAD ME BY THE SECOND SENTENCE. SHE THEN INTRODUCED ME TO MANNY MACIAS, THE MAN WHO CREATED THE SAN ANTONIO DELTA CHI CHAPTER, WE IMMEDIATELY CLICKED. JOINING DELTA CHI NEVER FELT LIKE A BURDEN, NOR A JOB. I WASN’T FORCED TO LEARN AN OUTRAGEOUS GREETING WHEN FACING AN ACTIVE MEMBER, NOR FORCED TO REMEMBER ANYONE’S SILLY NICKNAME. THEY LET ME BE ME. THAT WAS SOMETHING SPECIAL. ALL OF US, THE FOUNDING FATHERS, AGREED TO ONE SINGULAR PRINCIPLE AT THE INCEPTION OF THIS EXPERIENCE: BE DIFFERENT. THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT WE DID. IN 2019, WE FILLED THE HALLS OF A&M- SAN ANTONIO WITH A FRESH, NEW PERSPECTIVE. OUR FIRST TEST, STARTING A FUNDRAISER. WE NEEDED MONEY AND FAST. HOWEVER, WE FELT IT BORING TO ADOPT A NORMAL FUNDRAISER. FRITO-PIES? OVERDONE. CHIPS & HOTDOGS? TOO PLAIN. COFFEE AND DONUTS? TOO EASY. WE NEEDED A STIMULATING AND DYNAMIC FUNDRAISER. THEN, ABOUT A WEEK LATER, KENNY HUYNH, OUR CURRENT PRESIDENT, THREW OUT THE IDEA, “LET’S DO BOBA TEA!” WE ALL HESITATED, BUT THE LONGER WE DISCUSSED IT, THE MORE INTRIGUED WE BECAME. BY THE MEETINGS END, WE HAD FOUND OUR FUNDRAISER. NOW, THE FUN BEGAN. THE BROTHERS MET UP AND PRACTICED, TAKING HOURS, AND I DO MEAN HOURS, TO HELP THIS BROTHERHOOD SUCCEED FINANCIALLY. NEVER HAD I SEEN SUCH AN ARDOR FOR ANYTHING IN MY LIFE, IT WAS EXTRAORDINARY. A SIMPLE MIXTURE OF SYRUP, MILK, ICE, AND TAPIOCA BALLS BROUGHT US ALL TOGETHER. THAT SAME YEAR, WE CLAIMED 8 AWARDS, 1 FROM OUR UNIVERSITY, AND THE 7 FROM DELTA CHI INTERNATIONAL HEADQUARTERS (IHQ). OUR UNIVERSITY GRANTED US THE HIGHEST HONOR WE COULD RECEIVE, AT THE TIME, THE NEW STUDENT ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR AWARD. IHQ CHOSE US FOR THE RAYMOND D. GALBRETH CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT, AS A COLONY. A COLONY HADN’T WON THAT AWARD SINCE 1933, A TRULY HISTORIC MOMENT FOR US. THE AWARDS MADE US HUNGRIER, WE VOWED TO IMPROVE OUR EFFORTS NEXT YEAR AND USE OUR SUCCESSES AS A FOUNDATION FOR A BETTER FUTURE. WHEN DELTA CHI FOUND ME, I WAS LOST. SINCE CHILDHOOD, I’VE SUFFERED FROM ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION. IT HAUNTS ME TO THIS DAY. I CLOSED UP IN SOCIAL SETTINGS, I STUTTERED WHEN SPEAKING TO NEW PEOPLE, AND I NEVER STEPPED OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE. THIS BROTHERHOOD CHANGED THAT. THE CONSTANT SUPPORT AND CHALLENGES FROM MY BROTHERS BOLSTERED MY GROWTH, IN SPITE OF THE OVERWHELMING DISCOMFORT. AS A RESULT, I TOOK A LEAP OF FAITH, I RAN FOR STUDENT BODY VICE PRESIDENT. TAKING THE STAGE AND EXPRESSING MY OPINIONS ON STUDENT ISSUES WAS TERRIFYING. I HAD TO STEP INTO THE LIMELIGHT, SHAKE HANDS, AND WOO PEOPLE I’D NEVER MET BEFORE. WHAT A GUT-WRENCHING EXPERIENCE. HOWEVER, I DID NOT TRAVEL THIS ROAD ALONE, DELTA CHI STOOD BY ME. FOR EVERY WORRY I EXPRESSED, A BROTHER OFFERED A KIND WORD. FOR EVERY ANXIETY OR STRESS, A BROTHER GAVE AN EMBRACING HUG. ON APRIL 6TH, I GOT THE NEWS. ZACH, KENNY, ISAAC, AND I WERE TRAVELING TO OUR VERY FIRST DELTA CHI REGIONAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE. WE LAUGHED, JAMMED OUT, AND TOLD JOKES IN THE CAR. WE LAUGHED SO HARD; I ALMOST DIDN’T NOTICE MY VIBRATING PHONE. I LOOKED AT THE SCREEN, LA-TIEKA SIMS, MY RUNNING MATE. I IMMEDIATELY TENSED UP; MY ANXIETY KICKED IN. THREE SECONDS INTO THE CONVERSATION, I DREW A TEAR. THE BALLOTS WERE IN, WE WON. TWO YEARS LATER, I WRITE THIS LETTER AS A FORMER STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE A&M- SYSTEM BOARD OF REGENTS AND CHANCELLOR, REPRESENTING MORE THAN 100,000 STUDENTS, A FORMER LEGISLATIVE AIDE FOR TEXAS HOUSE DISTRICT 114, AND CURRENT STUDENT LEADING OUR UNIVERSITY’S WELLNESS STATION EFFORTS, TO COMBAT A COVID-19 OUTBREAK. WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THE FIRST INSTALLMENT OF THIS MAGAZINE. IN HONOR OF OUR EFFORTS, WINNING THE HIGHEST HONORS FROM OUR UNIVERSITY, WE DUBBED THIS 1ST ITERATION THE STUDENT ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR EDITION. LET THIS PUBLICATION INSPIRE DX CHAPTERS ALL OVER THE WORLD, CHALLENGE FUTURE MEMBERS OF THE SAN ANTONIO CHAPTER, AND ENCOURAGE MEN TO JOIN DELTA CHI. IN THE BOND,

JUAN ESPINOZA SAN ANTONIO CHAPTER ADVISOR & ALUMNI INITIATE
MY BROTHERS KEEPER TEXT AND PHOTOS BY JUAN ESPINOZA Texas A&M- San Antonio is a special place to me. It’s where I received my undergraduate degree and where I will earn my Masters. On this campus, I’ve worked with the most amazing higher

education professionals in the state. This campus, however, is also where I found Delta Chi, or should I say – where it found me. It was one afternoon that Manny, a consultant for Delta Chi, visited my office with great enthusiasm and an intoxicating smile. To this day, we all still hold him in a high regard. He explained his role in the colonization process for the Delta Chi Fraternity around the country and pitched me our Delta Chi values: philanthropy, education, brotherhood, justice, networking, and connection. I was intrigued and I carved out some time to speak more intimately. Later, when we sat down, he elaborated on his mission and offered me the opportunity to become the inaugural advisor for the incoming San Antonio colony. He shared his phone number, in case I had questions, and gave me 24 hours to think about it. I had made my decision before he left my office.
My brothers keeper continued... Since then, Delta Chi has played a very big role in my duties as a professional on campus. I attended 90% of all colony meetings, fundraisers, and recruitment events. I was a new advisor with a young, audacious eboard, their leadership & personal development was my responsibility. I felt it necessary to be there, always lending an ear or a hand. In fact, I had several, and I do mean several, meetings with the inaugural colony President, Zachary Franckowiak. We spoke about his vision and struggles during our first year of operation. As a result, one day, Zachary told me, the brotherhood had talked about me becoming an alumni initiate. That took me by surprise. The chapter saw me as a wonderful advisor and lifelong friend. I accepted; I was honored. Within the same semester, the University had a “Dear World” event, a powerful virtual storytelling experience, come onto campus to provide the Jaguar community with a unique platform to tell about a significant moment in our lives. I dedicated my photo shoot and message, which was written on my arms, to the chapter. I wrote “My Brother’s Keeper,” I felt like I was gaining a family that I could lean on, as much as it leaned on me. I committed to mentor, guide, motivate, inspire, and develop every brother I came across. On Founder’s Day, October 13th, 2019, I was initiated as an alumni. Becoming an Alumni initiate has been, to date, the best decision I’ve made in my life. What I’ve gotten from this brotherhood is endless: friendship, memories, laughter, connection, and a future with an organization which I respect and love. Any person yearning to provide mentorship and guidance give the San Antonio chapter your time and energy. You won’t regret it. Every day, the young men of this colony push the envelope, strive for excellence, and care for each other. Their efforts led to a cabinet full of trophies, hearts full of love, and minds filled memories to last a lifetime. It is my honor to guide this organization’s impact on our wonderful campus.
WELCOME
OUR NEWEST ALUMNI
Clayton Jaskinia Kosciusko, Texas Age 23 B.A. in Education, EC-6 Founding Father Inaugural "C" Spring '20 AMC Brother Clayton Jaskinia, our rock, our leader, and our role-model. Mr. Jaskinia made an impact on Delta Chi the minute he set his foot in his first E-Board meeting. Prior to joining the brotherhood of a lifetime he brought extensive leadership experience with int being the Lead Jaguar Ambassador, Speaker of the Senate for the Student Government Association, and Chancellor's Student Advisory Council Representative.
Mr. Jaskinia authored and spearheaded some of our greatest efforts, including the 5 Year Plan Committee and the Chartering Banquet Committee. His impact will be felt by future generations of Delta Chi's. He was a critical part of the foundational generation of our chapter.
With his efforts, and those of many brothers, we ended our 2nd full year with a cabinet of trophies, including Student Organization of the Year for Texas A&M- San Antonio and Region III Regents Cup.
We are beyond elated to announce that his success, hard-work, and dedication in college have paid off! Mr. Jaskinia will be starting a full-time position at Edgewood ISD, Wrenn Middle School as a 7th Grade History Teacher this fall.
Congratulations, we love you!
Giovani Ramires San Antonio, Texas Age 23 B.A. in Criminology Giovani Ramires, our silent devil and most warm-hearted brother. He joined our colony in his last semester of college, in the wake of COVID-19. Although his experience has been mostly virtual and non-traditional, that hasn't stopped his motivation to check-on brothers, message them, and make sure they feel cared about.
Giovani started his college career Northeast Lakeview Community College in Fall 2015. He immediately immersed himself into education. albeit with no general "career" or "tack" in mind. Nevertheless, he pressed forward. He transferred to A&M- San Antonio in Fall 2018 where he got bit by the student involvement bug! He joined the campus activities board (CAB) his second semester and staffed events, created and maintained campus traditions, and overall, improved the student morale. Through the efforts of Giovanni and the other CAB student workers, the transition to online learning was made smoother.
We met Giovanni at many events on campus. He never failed to stop by and say hello. Throughout our conversations and interactions we've learned one thing, his genuine personality. He'll greet you with the same energy, and charisma consistently, something rare in any person. As we say, like it? Put a bid on it! So we did. He enthusiastically accepted and everything is history. Brother Giovanni enrolled at Southern New Hampshire University for his masters in Education.
Congratulations, we love you!

research. We achieved more than what was expected and, as a result, received the Raymond D. Galbreth Certificate of Achievement, from Delta Chi IHQ, the first colony to do so since 1993.
This past semester can be summarized differently. It presented unique obstacles not only for us, but for the world as a whole. The coronavirus and subsequent quarantine was not what we predicted or imagined. Our graduating seniors became disappointed, our men discouraged, and our amazing momentum seemed to stagnate. Plans of a double recruitment period and innovative fundraising ideas were halted. Forced to complain or change, the strength of our bond and culture brought forth light where some saw little. One brother, David Mantiply, created a daily "quarantine challenge", a cumulative point system with daily engaging tasks or thoughtprovoking questions in hopes of boosting morale. It succeeded magnificently and is now a tradition.
Together we've experienced a lot in our first 1.5 years and we're grateful for it all. Although I have since left my role as President, I am extremely confident that the culture of this organization will remain strong and influence the great chapter & leadership decisions. We are excited for what Fall 2020 holds, although slightly nervous, we think of this more as excitement. It tests our grit and puts us in an environment that challenges our character. I've seen these men embody courage during many unfortunate circumstances, and our focus from the beginning has always been conquering the challenges ahead, to leave future members with a solid framework of support, values, and knowledge so that they too may succeed.
Myself, the Alumni Board of Trustees, as well as the other men within Delta Chi are thrilled for the future ahead of us, and we’re so glad to have you as a part of our journey.

CALL TO ACTION Geoff Racy, ABT President
This semester has been filled with accomplishments both large and extra-large. The TAMUSA Chapter of Delta Chi deserves to be recognized, acknowledged, and celebrated. This summer saw the long awaited and well-deserved awarding of “Chapter Status” to TAMUSA Delta Chi. These men have put in countless man hours and exerted themselves to see this accomplishment come to fruition. Just after receiving this status; the Chapter was honored by Delta Chi IHQ by winning many coveted core competency awards (many with distinction). The long award list is as follows: Promote Character, Develop Character, Advance Justice, and Assist in the Acquisition of a Sound Education. The Chapter also took home the Community Impact Award as well as Outstanding Chapter Advisor. None of these awards would have been possible without the absolute dedication and commitment of each member of this Chapter. This year has presented a number of tests and trials in the face of COVID and virtual learning. I am absolutely impressed in the ability of the Chapter to overcome and adapt to these encounters. As the ABT President, I challenge each member of this Chapter to continue the legacy created and sustained by their peers. Personal responsibility and our commitment of excellence to the Delta Chi basic expectations, are the ingredients which fuel our fire. I have said this before, and I will say it again; Delta Chi is a lifelong commitment that will long extend after you graduate college. You will spend more time as an Alumnus than you will as an active member. This Chapter has a strong Alumni base that will continue to grow in the coming years. Our beloved Fraternity will celebrate its 130th Birthday this fall. Try to image how proud our original founding fathers would be if they could see the hard work and determination displayed by this Chapter to keep their dream alive. I am proud of each and every member of this Chapter and look forward to observing your many upcoming successes.
Sincerely, Geoff Racy Alumni Board of Trustees President at A&M- San Antonio
