We put the emphasis on community with organized social, recreational and educational activities. Peaceof-mind comes standard too with professional, on-site management and maintenance, and friendly 24/7 on-call staff.
JAGUAR MARCH At the end of our extended orientation program, JagX, all first-year freshmen gather on the last day to walk the Jaguar March, a one-mile march from the Torre de Esperanza to the campus. This march symbolizes the importance of our students starting and finishing their journey to earn their degree
PRESIDENT’S PICNIC Week of Welcome isn’t the same without a picnic with our President. President Matson holds a picnic in the middle of campus filled with free food and drinks, and a lot of organizations to help welcome our Jaguar students.
C H O O S E . A C T . I M PA C T . Every year, once a semester, the Mays Center hosts a day of volunteering called Choose. Act. Impact., where students are encouraged to gather with their fellow peers and participate in a volunteering activity of their choice around the A&M-SA community.
MADLA MAROON MONDAYS On Mondays we wear Maroon… but really! Madla Maroon Monday is the day that our students wear maroon to honor and show pride for Senator Frank L. Madla for his contribution to Texas A&M University-San Antonio and to the city of San Antonio. On specific Mondays of the year, the Student Government Association sets aside Madla Maroon Monday swag to give to students on campus and encourage that school spirit!

F A L L F E S T - F A M I LY W E E K E N D Every 3rd weekend in October is reserved for you and your familia! This community-wide event has plenty of fun for the family with free live entertainment. There is great food, fun games and bounce houses for children. This is also the time when Mr. and Ms. A&M-SA is announced and crowned. Fall for the fun and come on by!
RING CEREMONY The ring ceremony is a special moment for Jaguar students as it symbolizes their commitment to graduating from A&M-SA. Each fall and spring semester, students who have completed 60 credits can purchase their ring and participate in the Ring Ceremony, which is the only time any student is allowed to step on our sacred seal for a picture with their ring.
FESTIVAL DE CASCARONES It’s a Jaguar Fiesta here on campus! Festival de Cascarones is an official Fiesta event that closes out Fiesta. It is a fun event filled with games, food, music and the cracking of cascarones, open to the public!
R.E.D. FRIDAYS Here a A&M-SA, we take pride in our Military students and families. If you find yourself here on a Friday, make sure you are wearing something red! The letters R-E-D stand for Remember Everyone Deployed and since we are a Military Embracing campus, we join in this national tradition and remember everyone that are remotely serving our country.
Mark your calendar! Wear the color red to let our servicemen and servicewomen know that we have not forgotten them, and that we appreciate their sacrifice!
JAGUARS REMEMBERED This memorial ceremony, held in the President’s Garden, is a very unique and special time for Jaguars to come together to commemorate all students and alumni that have passed away in the recent year.
PAT R I O T S ’ C O R D I N G C E R E M O N Y The Patriot Cord Ceremony is a special ceremony for the university to honor the service of our Active Duty, National Guard/ Reserve and Veteran students. M A D L A’ S L U C K As finals approach, you’ll often see students in the library or a study room, however, it would be quite normal to see a fellow Jaguar in front of our Frank L. Madla statue located in the front of the Madla Building. If you ever find yourself needing some extra help during finals, you can flip a penny onto the Madla Statue, and you’re guaranteed good luck!
TORRE DE ESPERANZA As you drive onto campus, you may have witnessed our huge Tower, known as the Torre de Esperanza. The legend says that the spirit of future students held onto a jaguar cub in the tower to protect it. In the tower, the jaguar was able to develop intellectually, grow enduring hope spiritually and defend its purpose for being. The jaguar stayed in the tower until adulthood. The jaguar leaves the tower to restore balance and well-being upon the land and is dedicated to justice and wisdom. Legend has it that when you stand at the north facing door of the Torre de Esperanza and knock four times, the power of the jaguar guides and protects you on your life’s journey. As you start your academic year, the jaguar gargoyles, known as “jaggoyles,” above you on the east side of the tower watch over you at the dawn of this new beginning. The jaggoyles that face the south look after you and welcome you in this community that is your academic home. Facing west, the jaggoyles focus on keeping you earthly grounded and staying true to your roots as you work toward your goals. And the jaggoyles to the north look ahead at your life’s cycle, as you gain knowledge, intellect, experience and logic from lessons learned on and off campus. The doorway is a symbol of your future. The tower is a token of hope. Know that the jaguar is forever protecting you, for as long as you call this university your own.
LIGHTS OF ESPERANZA It’s the most wonderful time of the year here at A&M-SA when Lights of Esperanza is happening and you won’t want to miss it! This event is open to the public. You can enjoy fun holiday festivities such as ice skating and snow sliding. We’ll warm you up with some hot cocoa and delicious food, and once President Matson makes the call to light up the campus, that is when the real party starts!

THE MISSION MAGAZINE
The Honoring of the Ring brings together two of A&M-San Antonio’s most distinct symbols; the University ring and the University Seal, and these symbols tie all of us together as proud Jaguars. Three hundred and sixty-three days out of the year, the beautiful University Seal and its intricate tile work in the courtyard of the Central Academic Building are cordoned off from pedestrian traffic. We do this to pay homage to it as the University’s most important symbol. But on the day of each ceremony, on this very special occasion, Jaguars walk across that honored seal and for the first time and slip the University ring onto their finger.
The Jaguar ring is a visible testament to your academic achievements that you carry with you. It serves to inspire others, and it holds powerful symbols and images of who we are.
We are Texans – symbolized with the Texas flag and star We are survivors – like the hardy mesquite and cactus
We are independent – represented here by the archway of the Alamo We Are Strong- Symbolized by the columns on that archway, which are engraved with the Latin words PRAESTARE, meaning outstanding or distinguished, and COMMENDARE, which translates to committing to the care or protection of the things we value
We Are Rooted in Our History- As symbolized by the Rose Window of Mission San Jose and the Espedanas, the three bells of Mission
Espada. These emblems are rich in history and in meaning, speaking to the cultures that have influenced San Antonio, and to the three core areas of study at A&M-San Antonio: arts & sciences, business, and education and human development.
Look closely & you will see a wall of bricks- The symbol that represents the foundation you are helping to build. The bricks are
a reference to the physical bricks that adorn the main entry of the Madla Building, that bear the names of the first 5,000 graduates of A&M-San Antonio, a lasting tribute to all who will graduate from our halls.
And of course, we are also Jaguar- The Jaguar, a noble and fierce animal, symbolizes power and strength. It also is a symbol of
ancient Meso American cultures, and the proud mascot of your Texas A&M-San Antonio.
We Are San Antonio- Symbolized by the enduring landmark of the San Antonio River.
