Build a Community
A tip from the lead mentor
The recent winter storms reminded me how important community is. Whether its your neighbors helping you cook on an open fire or opening your home to family and friends, community is necessary for you to thrive. Your time in college is no different - how you build that community may be different. It’s up to you to create your community, whether it be by joining a student org or just talking to the people in your classes. I know walking onto campus as a transfer can be intimidating - there are so many clubs and orgs. How do you find the campus community that’s right for you? Step 1…go to JagSync. Once I’m a nontraditional Campus communities aren’t just there, you can search all the student, so I was even student orgs - they can be people in student orgs we have on campus. more apprehensive about your classes to create a study Try starting with your major. We spoke with Bryant Moore, on behalf of the Library. Moore has been with our campus for nine years and is the Frist-Year Experience Librarian and serves as the advisor for the Student Library Advisory Board!

Doroteo Peña
on being a student worker for the Library
Doroteo transferred from South Texas College and is majoring in History with a minor is Kinesiology/Coaching. At the end of Summer 2020 Doroteo moved up to San Antonio to attend A&M-SA and decided to apply for a job with our campus library. "I applied for the library as I thought it would give me the opportunity to be on campus more often. Plus, I could utilize the position as a way to learn about what services the Library offered students." Now having worked for the library for two semesters, Peña recommends working on campus "because it allows you to learn so much about all the departments and you know the departments will be flexible when it comes to academics." "Don't forget to attend the upcoming focus group the library is hosting it's a great opportunity to build connections with everyone attending and share your opnions, plus there's a great raffle!" -Doroteo Peña

Cary Farrow IV When school gets challenging what has motivated you to push through?
The big thing for me is not strictly going to college to get the paper, there isn't a direct correlation to the actual degree, but I'm more invested in the opportunities that I'll get in college. Business owners have a general knowledge that I don't and I want to seek the knowledge that I don't have. I wasn't a good student when I was younger - I wasn't serious about it at first or well-equipped to go through it. I wasn't prepared; so this is my redemption narrative. Reclaiming my education is my sense of self-worth . School seemed insurmountable, now, when I run into trouble, I remind myself that I'm grown and I CAN navigate this. I have the skills to deal with managing myself and my time.

Classification: Junior Major: Management, College of Business Why did you choose A&M-SA?
Affordability was the main reason. Financial aid covered almost all of the costs. My finances are not where they typically would be and here I can get my education at an affordable price - so that was a big motivator .
Any advice for other transfer students? If you're having a hard time, regain clarification on why you're here. What are your intentions? Why are you taking these classes? Asking yourself difficult questions can help you figure out the answers on your own, then reach out to someone who's perspective you respect. If you're just going through the motions, when it gets difficult, it's tough to get through. Find your why, and keep it. Have a robust support system in place. You need someone who can be frank with you about your emotions. Have someone there to have those tough conversations with. Build a safe support system.
What do you like doing in your free time? I love going hiking, and being with people that matter to me - I meet with friends and fellow actors weekly through zoom for an hour and a half, I also make time to see my young nephew every once in awhile - but it's not about just being there - I make the most of those moments and try to be present with those I can see in person. I enjoy doing improv work - Theater is a BIG part of my life especially pre-covid. With that being said... Support the arts! The arts do a lot, try to help us get through a difficult time, they are amongst the most vulnerable and most affected by these difficult times! MARCH 2021

Small Business HOW DID THIS SMALL BUSINESS START? AND WHY DID YOU WANT TO START IT?
When we were growing up, as far back as I can remember, my sister always cooked for our family. Our mother was a single mother and was crazy busy working a full-time job and being a full-time mother to us! We tended to eat out quite often and although she would try to make home cooked meals, she truly never enjoyed it. So, my sister started learning recipes here and there and would watch and learn from our grandmothers on both sides! She developed this passion for cooking and really enjoyed the craft and beauty of it, viewing it as an expression of art. So, growing up we always toyed with the idea of starting a catering company, but our careers took two different paths and our lives never synced with each other. Fast forward to about five years ago, we were both at a point at our lives ready for a “change.” We decided together to take a chance, bet on ourselves and be our own boss for once! Originally, we wanted to start this business to start something new, and step out of our comfort zone, but now it has turned into something so much more than that! We are really loving the businesswomen we are becoming and inspiring the next generation to want and be more. If you want to change something, change it! Make it happen, and we want them to know we have their backs the way our mother had ours!
Before we went into business, we did a lot of research! We read so many books, attended seminars and talked to local food truck owners to get an idea what we were really in for. One of the main pieces of advice we kept getting was to do W H A T D O E S Y O U R something unique. Do something that makes you stand out and makes people remember you! With my sisters’ Culinary SMALL BUSINESS background and her extensive training as a Chef, there were OFFER? so many cuisine options to choose from! After all of the brainstorming, and taste tests we kept returning back to our family favorite, Enchiladas! We truly have a passion for Enchiladas and with my sisters’ French-trained background and influences from our grandmothers, she developed her own Enchilada sauce recipes and we started our Enchilada adventure!

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING THING YOU HAD TO OVERCOME AS A SMALL BUSINESS?
The most challenging thing we had to overcome was learning how to work with each other in such a small space! Ha ha! My sister went from working in a 7,000 square foot industrial size kitchen to our little 20-foot food truck box! Add to that, we are sisters!
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU HOPE TO GROW AS A SMALL BUSINESS? GOALS?
We truly enjoy being a small business! We have grown slightly every year and it has been at the perfect rate for our lives! We are still a two-person operation and that is completely intentional. We love the fact that we can be open when we want to and close when we need to! We just completed our five-year anniversary and can proudly say we achieved our 5-year business plan! We are looking forward to the future and can’t wait to see what is in store for us!
We are a food truck that loves to travel and meet new fellow Enchilada Enthusiasts! We always post our monthly schedule on our website at ladaladies.com and on our social media accounts where you can find us! Or you can always contact us because it will always be one of us responding to you!
