The Dean of Students Office is here to help you navigate through some of the concerns you may have as a student. They provide assistance in managing a hardship/crisis, understanding campus policies and procedures, and connecting you with the proper resources. This support system extends beyond the walls of the Dean of Students Office and will help you find your way through any obstacle you may encounter while you are a Jaguar.

Jo Anna Benavides-Franke Assistant Vice President of Student Success and Engagement & Dean of Students

OCTOBER 2020

Are the services you offer all virtual? Are walk-ins welcomed?

Many of the services offered are virtual but some are in-person and are by appointment only. As much as we would love to see more students face to face, we need to make sure we make safety a priority and do what is best for the student and the campus community.

"As the Dean of Students, I oversee many different offices here in the division of Student Success and Engagement. I have the honor of working with the Student Counseling Center, Disability Support Services, International Affairs, Student Rights and Responsibilities, & Housing, so you could say I oversee the student engagement portion of the division. My departments are driven to assist all enrolled students, both domestic and international; navigate all that is the college experience. We work to ensure that not only the student succeeds in the classroom but in their personal life as well."

PAGE 01

The departments in my area all plan to grow their services in various ways to include offering services that reflect the needs and demands of students participating in face- to-face, hybrid and on-line learning. In addition, we will continue to offer services in collaboration with the campus community for an overall holistic student experience.

In what ways do you hope to grow as a department?

Departments that report to you?

The Departments that report to me are Office of International Affairs, Student Counseling Center, Student Rights & Responsibilities, Disability Support Services, and Student Housing. In addition, I have a half-time case manager and share the oversight of our newly formed Student Success and Engagement Communication Department.

What does your Website have to offer?

My website is very informational, that is where students and family members can go to get information regarding important resources, safety information, policies. I know it doesn’t sound fun but it is important information that I strongly encourage students to check out if they have any questions. There are changes to come with updates on information and the adding of more content. It is all in the works and planning phase right now.

Faculty This month, we're brining something new! Ever think about your Transfer Story and wonder if professors understand the journey we are taking when we transition from one institution to another? Do they get it? Keep an eye out for Faculty Highlights in the coming months as you find out that many of A&M-SA's very own professors are TRANSFER STUDENTS THEMSELVES, and share their journeys and tips with us!

Dr.

William Blake Erickson

Showing off his T-Shirt from National Park College, a community College in his hometown Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Dr. Erickson shared his advice for fellow transfer students... "It's natural to feel like a fish out of water- for me, that was always the exciting part! Make sure to take full advantage of any resources available to transfer students. It's also important to know that you're behind on networking and making connections with faculty members at A&M-SA compared to students who started here. That's fine- make sure to be visible, visit your professors during their office hours, get to know them and their research, see if you can work on directed research with them if that interests you. This will give you great experience, and allow them to get to know you as well in case you need a reference letter one day. I still get in touch with the professors who I got to know really well."

It is the small steps every day that help us reach our goals. We give generously to various non-profit and charitable organizations that encourage students to showcase and ignite their power from within. At Ann’s Jewelry Collection, we believe in your power as a consumer to change the world through your purchases. It is the small steps every day that help us reach our goals. When you support Ann’s Jewelry Collection, you are getting more than just jewelry; it is now a channel through which you can make a statement of what you believe in. Each piece moves us forward towards a more hopeful future and serves as a gentle reminder of your intention to use your voice to help others find theirs. I enjoy working with stones, shells, pearls, crystals, and wire. Either stringing stones or wrapping them. My new favorite is working in art metals with silver, brass, bronze, and copper!
