Faculty Highlight

WHAT IS YOUR POSITION AND TITLE?

I AM THE DIRECTOR OF THE TU CASA PROGRAM. TU CASA STANDS FOR TRANSITION UNIVERSITY FOR CAREER ADVANCEMENT AND SUCCESSFUL ADULTHOOD. THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN AT A&M-SA SINCE JANUARY 2021.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR OUR CAMPUS IN YOUR POSITION?

I SUPPORT STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS TO ATTEND CLASSES, PARTICIPATE IN VOCATIONAL INTERNSHIPS, AND GET THE MOST OUT OF COLLEGE THROUGH SOCIAL ACTIVITIES, EVENTS, AND SERVICES. WHAT DID YOUR UNDERGRADUATE JOURNEY LOOK LIKE? ARE YOU A TRANSFER STUDENT?

I ATTENDED EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN CHENEY, WASHINGTON FOR MY UNDERGRADUATE INFORMATION. THE WORLD WAS A DIFFERENT PLACE AT THAT TIME AS IT WAS RARE FOR STUDENTS TO HAVE COMPUTERS, SO WE NEEDED TO USE BOOKS, PENCILS, AND PAPER. I TRANSFERRED TO LAMAR UNIVERSITY OVER IN BEAUMONT FOR MY GRADUATE STUDIES.

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT YOUR POSITION OR DEPARTMENT?

MY POSITION AND PROGRAM ARE SPECIAL IN THAT THERE ARE VERY FEW OF THEM AROUND THE COUNTRY. WITH THOUSANDS OF COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN THE UNITED STATES, THERE ARE JUST OVER 300 PROGRAMS LIKE TU CASA IN THE COUNTRY. LESS THAN 20 OF THEM ARE IN TEXAS. THE PROGRAM IS ALSO SPECIAL IN HOW WELL STUDENTS AND STAFF WORK TOGETHER. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

AS THE PROGRAM IS STILL NEW, I SPEND SOME OF MY FREE TIME WORKING. I ALSO LIKE TO DISCOVER DIFFERENT PARTS OF CENTRAL AND SOUTH TEXAS, VISIT WITH FRIENDS, DRINK COFFEE, AND STREAM TELEVISION AND MOVIES.

or a gingerbread house!

As finals come around we tend to be hard on us, so just remember... "Who you were yesterday, is not who you are today."

Stephanie Gooding A tip from the Lead Mentor

As a Mentor, one should always attempt to see another's perspective, and then identify how to associate that perspective with something of their own experiences. This way, one can provide meaningful insight and support both genuinely and effectively. DECEMBER 2021

DR. JOSEPH PICKERING, DIRECTOR OF STUDENT INVOLVEMENT, HE/HIM

CONTEXT | RELATOR | ACHIEVER | DELIBERATIVE | LEARNER

It has been a great process to learn about myself and help our students learn about their strengths and what they mean to them." I use my number one strength context, daily, to examine the historical aspects of people, places, and things that I interact with."
