New Student Programs Team of the Month The Office of New Student Programs at Texas A&M University-San Antonio is designed to provide incoming students, and their families with shared experiences and intentional connections that create community, promote Jaguar pride, set the tone for student academic success, and support students to develop skills to navigate college life.

Where do you fall under?

First-Year Student

You are a First-Year Student if you have not attended college since earning a high school degree or Certificate of High School Equivalency.

Transfer Student & Freshman Transfer Student You are a Transfer Student if you have attended college since earning a high school degree or Certificate of High School Equivalency and have 29 or more college credit hours.

Family Member

You are a family or guest if you have a student who is planning on attending A&M-SA can join us for Family Orientation.

You are a Freshman Transfer Student if you have attended college since earning a high school degree or Certificate of High School Equivalency and have 29 or less college credit hours.

Howdy! It's us- your summer 2021 Orientation Leaders. We lead over 1,000+ first-year students through their transition to A&M-SA, first with New Student Orientation then later in the summer with JagX. NSO is a one-day event, either in-person or virtually, where they get to meet some classmates, gain a bit of Jaguar knowledge, and register for classes. JagX was an extended orientation where they spent three days on campus learning all about the university, meeting more Jaguars, and preparing for your first day of classes.

We're all so happy to have met you this summer! We've worked hard all year long to ensure that you have everything you need from us to be successful in your first year here at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. Reminder: we are here to help you year-round! You can visit us in the Office of New Student Programs, any time.

A tip from the Lead Mentor

I’ve always had role models growing up, but I never had a mentor. Sure, my role models were there to support me through my life but never really seemed to be there when I needed to bounce ideas off of or just needed advice. That’s where a mentor would’ve come in handy, someone to help me navigate life’s various adventures - like my adventure into adulthood or the great adventure that is fatherhood. Just like finding your way on a hike it helps to have a compass and mentors are a kind of a “Human Compass.”

Mentors can help you traverse the murky waters that you experience throughout life, but are especially helpful during your college experience.

Finding your own Human Compass can be a daunting task but not impossible; sometimes you just stumble into one without realizing what’s happening. Your mentor doesn’t have to be a professor or a staff member, they can be younger than you, identify differently than you, have a different major or career. Does it help if they do? Sure, but it’s not a requirement. The only real requirements is that they have your best interest at heart and are ready to point you in the right direction, and most importantly they’re AVAILABLE for you.

Once you find your human compass, its important that you are mentorable as your participation in the relationship is just as important. Be vulnerable, honest and open to new ideas. I want to encourage each of you to find a human compass of your own. My mentor has placed an emphasis on me stepping outside of my comfort zone and I’m a better student, employee, brother, father and MAN because of it...thanks Juan.

Juan says he uses his number one strength by "making my message clear, every time!" Input | Relator | Learner | Individualization | Achiever Reba says she uses her number one strength “All over the office” I don’t do anything in my work capacity or personal life without seeking some type of input. It often makes me better informed and more well rounded when it comes down to making an impactful/effective decision. I also think that with input number one it feeds into my other strengths." and also adds that when she layers it with relator it provides her with deeper connections!

Jarrick Brown, clifton strengths coach Assistant director student involvement

WOO | Communication | Competition | Responsibility | Input We asked Jarrick "If you can coach anyone who would it be?" he shared that he'd love to have a coaching session with the actor/director Tyler Perry! Jarrick explains that Perry took his situation of homelessness, and somehow still found hope and motivation to become a successful, rich and famous person.. "I'd love to know how he used his strengths help turn his life around."

You can always stop Jarrick and say hello around campus, or even to schedule a coaching session because his colleagues say he uses his number one strength, WOO, to be sassy & approachable!

What is your classification and major?

"I am a senior and a Child Development major with a minor in Education."

Why is coming to school important to you?

"I want to prove to myself that I can achieve my goal. Even though I am a wife and mother, I am doing something just for me. That as a My education has always been important to me and now that I have three children, I want them to see that you can achieve your personal goals no matter what."

What organization(s) are you a part of on campus?

"I am currently the Speaker of the Senate for Student Government Association, the Social Media Coordinator for JagFam Student-Parent Organization, and a Silver Liners Mentor in the Transfer Mentorship Program."

Where did you transfer from?

"I graduated from Palo Alto College in 2011 with three associates degrees -management -marketing -general business"

What advice do you give to incoming transfer students?

"Find your niche, your tribe. Mine falls in JagFam Student-Parent, Silver Liners and SGA. I found groups that I could leave a mark on the university. Yes, focus on your education that is priority, but just because we are “nontraditional” students doesn’t mean that we cannot have the full college experience. Leave a legacy of positive impacts on campus and in your community."

What is your favorite part about TAMUSA? "Honestly, the culture of acceptance on campus. Everyone is welcoming, the faculty and staff are amazing. If I ever needed help, I knew I could ask without being afraid."

As a transfer student how do you get involved on campus?

"Attending the informational fairs and looking on JagSync. I was able to connect to my organizations by meeting new people and being recruited into the groups."

What's especially cool about being a transfer student on our campus?

"Transfer week! Honestly, the Office of Transfer Engagement has so many events that make transfers feel welcome. The opportunities afforded to transfer students are amazing. Our university began with upper-level classes only we were known for transfers - our campus legacy has celebrated transfer students."
