Student Counseling Center

The Student Counseling Center provides brief individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, consultation, case management, and prevention services to currently enrolled A&M – San Antonio students. All mental health services provided by the Student Counseling Center (SCC) are free, confidential (as the law allows), and are not part of a student’s academic or university record.

Our clinicians represent a variety of disciplines to include Licensed Psychologists, Social Workers, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors, and Licensed Professional Counselors. In addition, every clinician represents a specific liaison role including: suicide prevention, healthy relationships, alcohol and other drugs, and diversity and inclusion. For more information on staff backgrounds, clinical interests, and fun facts, please visit www.tamusa.edu/studentcounseling and select the “Contact Us” tab.

All enrolled A&M-SA students are eligible to receive an initial appointment to assess their needs. The initial appointment is used to make treatment recommendations based on individual symptoms, severity, appropriateness of services, and availability of resources. At the conclusion of the initial appointment, the provider will render a clinical recommendation based on services that are best suited to meet individual needs.

Aaron Guerrero Civic Engagement Coordinator Mays Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement

What did your undergraduate journey look like? Are you a transfer student? Yes, I was a transfer student during my undergraduate career. I began by attending a local community college near my hometown called Temple College, earned my basic course credits there, and then transferred to Sam Houston State University to complete my Bachelor of Arts degree in History, with a double minor in Spanish and English.

What is special about your position or department?

The Mays Center is special because provides students with opportunities, resources, and relationships that help develop them into career-ready and community-minded graduates. As the Civic Engagement Coordinator, I have the chance to encourage our students to be active in their community by volunteering and to be civically engaged by being knowledgeable voters.

gaining community on campus Abraham joined the Silver Liners Mentorship Program this Fall because he "needed help help as a Transfer Student. I was very afraid of my coming to a new University with no knowledge and not knowing anything regarding buildings and my way around campus." The Silver Liners is a group of 100 transfer students, providing a sense of community and support for each other, through mentorship. When we asked if Segundo would recommend this program to other transfer students he said "I would definitely recommend the Silver Liners Mentorship Program. I gained so much information like tours, study spots, as well as important resources offered by the university."

As apart of National Transfer Student Week the Transfer Student Engagement team hosted a upscale event called "Transfer Ball" in which there would be awards given out based on peer nominations and voting. Abraham was nominated as "Most Improved" we asked him how it felt to find out about this opportunity he said "I was grateful and honored, I took pride and thought about my academic journey and how far I have come when I saw my name of the ballot, I was speechless!" Only to end up winning the award all together. He unfortunately was not in attendance for the winning, but his mentor D'Markus accepted the award on his behalf and when Abraham got word he won he felt "humbled and proud" saying "I never feel alone and always supported as a transfer student, this program gives me confidence! Getting support from my fellow peers who are in the same situation as me." NOVEMBER 2021

Motivation & Advice

"My motivation for getting an education - I want to be the first in my family to graduate from college. I want to make a positive impact in my community as a Teacher/ Coach using Sports. I am also motivated in creating a better life for myself, my girlfriend Xitlali, and my family. There is power in education! The advice I'd give to incoming transfers is I say to keep following your dreams and keep your eyes on the prize which is graduation. There is power in education and your path is one of a kind, embrace it.

Transfer Week

RECAP

We had so much fun celebrating National Transfer Student week with you all! Universities across the nation celebrated the unique journey that we embark as transfer students, but I don't think anyone else does it quite like A&M-SA. On Monday we began the week with our kick-off, that catered to BOTH day and evening students. Tuesday was Transfer Field Day, Wednesday was Donuts & Coffee, then Tau Sigma induction ceremony (congratulations to all the inductees) and Thursday was our most popular event: Painting with a Transfer. Then we closed out the week with Transfer Ball, an all-out party celebrating each other while looking our very best! To all Transfer Students, we acknowledge your journey and appreciate you being here,

Viva!
