Department of the Month

Military Affairs

@Tamusamilitary Texas A&M-San Antonio Military

Without a doubt our Military Connected Students make up an important demographic in our Transfer population and our university as a whole! So what better department to dedicate "Department of the Month" in September than Military Affairs? This month, we spoke with Director of Military Affairs, and Alumnus Richard Delgado Jr. and some of A&M-SA's very own veterans!

The Office of Military Affairs (OMA) supports our military connected students from the first day they apply to the day they cross the stage, and beyond! "During COVID-19 our goal is to ensure we stay connected with our Military Connected students" says Delgado. He also shared that "[They] offer a wide range of events from celebrating the Military Branch Birthdays to bringing in guest speakers to talk about Veteran issues." The OMA also hosts many other events and traditions here on campus, you can always find out more about these events on JagSync or follow them on their social media accounts! Richard gave us the inside scoop!

"Participate with us, whether we're in class or an event - we will have several events during the week that are open to all students."

The transition isn't always easy so including and interacting with our military connected students makes a big difference and can maybe even make their day! Military Affairs Director & Marine Corps Veteran SEPTEMBER 2020

fairs Military AfTraditions... Each semester the Office of Military Affairs hosts a Patriot Cord Ceremony where graduating veterans are presented with a Red, White, and Blue cord to wear at commencement. The ceremony also includes some amazing guest speakers. Here's more of our events & traditions:

R.E.D. Fridays

9/11 Hero's Run

R.E.D. Friday is a University tradition that began as a way to show solidarity and support for our deployed heroes by wearing red every Friday to acknowledge the sacrifice they, and their families at home, are making for our country. By celebrating these sacrifices and keeping the deployed ever present in our minds and hearts, R.E.D. provides real, direct, and meaningful support to those families.

For the last eight years we have hosted the Travis Manion Foundation's 9/11 Hero's Run. The 9/11 Hero's Run provides to honor our fallen heroes while emphasizing the unity our country so desperately needs right now. Though we have pivoted to a virtual experience for 2020, this initiative is more critical than ever - not only to our organization but to our country as a whole. This September 11th, let us honor the first responders who gave their lives 19 years ago and veterans who have served in the wars since, while paying tribute to the heroes of today working on our front lines. Visit www.travismanion.org for more information!

Dennis Pendley, Navy Veteran

Patriot Patriots Day Day

"I was here in San Antonio, TX. at home, I woke up and turned on the TV to hear that the first plane hit the first tower and they were still confused as to what happened. Then the following planes hit, it felt like we were under attack from an unknown source...it was eerily quiet outside as I live close to Stinson Airport, not a plane in sight or traffic driving on the highway. I couldn't go back into the military so I felt like I wasn't able to do anything, being a veteran I wanted to help, but I couldn't.

The Patriot Day event is a gathering of campus community members including faculty, staff and students where we pause to remember all the lives that were changed forever on Sept. 11. 2001. This takes place in front of The Survivor Tree. The event begins at 8:30 am with a flag raising ceremony followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Survivor Tree along with a moment of silence. All details on JagSync.

A Callery pear tree became known as the "Survivor Tree" after enduring the September 11, 2001 terror attacks at the World Trade Center. In October of 2001 a severely damaged tree was discovered at Ground Zero, with snapped roots, burned, and broken branches. The tree was removed from the rubble and placed in the care of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation after it's recovery and rehabilitation, the tree was returned to the memorial in 2010. New, smooth limbs extended from the gnarled stumps, creating a visible demarcation between the tree's past and present. Today, the tree stands as a living reminder of resilience, survival, and rebirth. Having the seedling on campus makes our event a very special connection to 9/11 that most people do not have - there is currently only two in Texas, ours and one at Ft. Hood.

Richard, like many other Americans and Veterans "will never forget that day" Find out what Veterans Robin and Dennis recall about that day... Robin Randall, Army Veteran "I was in Fort Leonard Wood MO, I had just arrived a few days before basic training. The drill sergeants took us into briefing and separated those of us who had family in NY and those who didn't - for those who didn't they told us and turned on the news so we could see for ourselves. I could not believe what I was seeing. I had joined for the benefits and to ensure my children had a brighter future, but this jolted me into a different frame of mind. I now had to get all I could out of training because I would soon be called to action." SEPTEMBER 2020

Transfer Highlight

Transfer student Rosanna Castillo who is part of Tamusa's mariachi, Son de Esperanza, is proud of her roots and has been part of mariachi groups since a young age. Rosanna was able to participate in several events with the Alamo Community College District before transferring to A&M-SA.

We are proud of you Rosanna, keep up the hard work! "There aren't many universities that offer a mariachi program or organization so when the flyer went out for auditions here at TAMUSA, I quickly signed up. Being in the Mariachi has given me so much pride & joy by having the opportunity to represent my culture through music. I feel like I am doing my part to uplift others, and that alone is a reward all on its own."
