THE RIGHT TO THE CITY

THE WAY WE SHOP INTRODUCTION : The right to the city is an idea and a slogan that was first proposed by Henri Lefebvre in his 1968 book Le Droit à la ville and that has been reclaimed more recently by social movements, thinkers and several progressive local authorities alike as a call to action to reclaim the city as a co-created space—a place for life detached from the growing effects that commodification and capitalism have had over social interaction and the rise of spatial inequalities in worldwide cities throughout the last two centuries.

“ The world is going through a technological revolution, which some have

called

the

Fourth

Industrial

Revolution. In the new economy, the most important resource of a country is not its natural resources but its people or brain power.” -Strait Times-

IN THIS ISSUE (the way we shop) we

zoom in to a specific mall to understand the ergonomics of the place. How people reacted to the space provided. The aim of this is to propose new interventions/revitalizations of how a space can challenge how people think and felt about the space

As Singpore lead the charts in many prospect in the eductaion system, economy and lifestyle. We have been rapidly progress and grow to towards a technological economy...... However it is essential to wonder what the true eccent of the place with no technology and fast forward pace of in the economy, purely the nature of the place and the people. Thus, the way we build new cities will be at the heart of so much that matters, from climate change to economic vitality to our very well-being and sense of connectedness.

Golden Landmark Shopping complex (SITE) is adjacent in between the tourist distict known as Bugis District and the heritage area known as Arab Street & Haji Lane (Kampong Glam)

ACCESSIB SITE ANALYSIS ENTRANCES AND CIRCULATION

E3

B

E2 There are 4 main entrances to the shopping complex plus 2 additional entrances directly from Raffles Hospital and 1 directly from the connecting Bugis Village Hotel. The 4 main entrances are located at the 4 corners of the shopping centre on the 1st storey. The 2 entrances linking to the hospital are located on 2nd and 3rd storey respectively.

BILITY

The entrance from the hotel is located on the 3rd storey. The 4 entrances allow visitors from all around the complex to come in, making the complex easily accessible. The bridge linking the complex and the hospital also allows visitors to enter after a hospital visit or even for those who are looking for a break after work at the hospital. The entrance directly linking the hotel to the complex also allows tourists to easily access the complex, however it was observed that there was a lack of visitors/tourists (with the occasional 1 to 2) from the hotel side coming over to the complex. The high number of entrances despite it being a small building creates an “invitation – like” welcome for visitors to enter.

GOLDEN LANDMARK

BACKGROUND Stores in Golden Landmark Shopping Complex cater mostly for the Malay community in Singapore. There are numerous fashion boutiques carrying traditional Malay costumes such as the Baju Kurong and Kebaya, and also scarves and songkoks; traditional headgear.

There are also a number of gemstone and jewelry stores in Golden Landmark Shopping Complex where one can get birthstones, silver and gold jewelry, and even diamonds here.

Golden Landmark Shopping Complex also houses a number of Malay bridal and wedding services stores. There are a handful of Islamic bookstores here as well and is visited mostly by the Malay community in Singapore and tourists.

The hotel was adjoined to the Golden Landmark Complex, which was a Far East project completed a few years earlier to house a jewellery centre, a shopping mall and the Bugis Street Food Centre. The architectural style of both projects was a mixture of Arabic, Asian and Western influences to reflect the multicultural character of nearby areas such as Kampong Glam and Chinatown.

ATRUIM Nobtable features in the mall

The Atrium is the main focal point of the shopping complex. It is located directly at the centre of the complex with a ceiling volume of 3 storeys. The Atrium can be viewed directly from all 3 storeys. It is an area that invites visitors in and brings an element of surprise walking through due to the key elements in the area. The fountain and the bubble lift are the key elements in the atrium. The atrium gives a sense of spaciousness to the complex and brings out the “old school and traditional” aspect of the building.

ESCALATORS Nobtable features in the mall

The Escalator is located in the Atrium and at the centre of the shopping complex. There is only 1 set of escalators in the complex as the complex is small. It gives the visitors direction around the complex and allows them to walk pass the Atrium – which is the main part of the complex, to reach the escalator. The escalators are brightly lit with decorative lights however the escalators themselves are currently not functioning which may turn visitors into using the lifts instead.

CEILING Nobtable features in the mall

There are 2 different ceiling designs. 1st is the Atrium ceiling and the 2nd is the main ceiling of all the storeys. The ceiling of Atrium is made of tinted glass design surrounded by gold alloy metal. They create a contrast yet compliment each other. The alloy metal of the ceiling means with the top storey’s polystyrene ceiling. The rest of the storeys are of the same polystyrene ceiling. The ceiling brings out the traditional and “old – school” style of the place with the chosen colors of the gold and colourful tinted glass designs – a stark comparison to newer malls’ ceilings : the minimalist or “standard one colour” type ceiling.

LIFT Nobtable features in the mall

The Bubble lift is one of the key elements in the atrium. It is located right Infront of the fountain. It’s tip has a pointed shape and its brightly lit. The Bubble lift is something that will catch an eye of a visitor passing through. This is one of the few malls that has this “see-through” lift feature. This transparency effect allows visitors on the outside to take a glimpse of those who are occupying the inside and vice versa. This breaks the “barrier” between the two spaces and instead forms a connection – bridging the interior and the exterior. The Bubble Lift also livens up the area with is unique shape and brightly lit features.

PEOPLE Nobtable features in the mall

There were not many visitors who frequent the mall. It was fairly empty but never at one point, fully empty. However many of the people who actually came to this place have already in mind of what they want and head towards the stall. Thus, this create relationship between the seller and buyer that you would not get to see in other coporate mall. When there isnt a crowd you will get to see stall owner that came out of the shop to nteract with others stall owners.

ISLAMIC ART STUDIES OF GEOMETRIC & MEANING

ISLAMIC ART often characterized by recurrent motifs, such as the use of geometrical floral or vegetal designs in a repetition known as the arabesque. The arabesque in Islamic art is often used to symbolize the transcendent, indivisible and infinite nature of God What makes Islamic Art Unique? Geometric patterns are very popular in Islamic art largely due to its aniconic or symbolic quality. The use of geometric shapes in Islamic art is used to “reflect the language of the universe” and help the worshiper to reflect life and the greatness of creation and the creator, Allah. Geometry is seen as spiritual because circles are used, and circles are seen as infinite, and repetitive patterns are seen as infinite, which connects to the fact that Allah is infinite.

THE AIM

To slow down the pace of people who actually walk throught the mall as a transitional point.Taking the extra time to appreciate the place that has to offer,as to highlight the importance that we need to slow down ourselves or else we will miss out all the good stuff before is too late.

THE OUTCOME

of the space was to create portable seating space whereby peple can take to rest after a hetic walk at the kampong district or bugis area. Each structure is orientated in a way that privacy is given to people.
