CHANGE From living from the close knitted swamp to clean and orderly high-rise flats ---> A lion dance performance at a new HDB estate in Toa Payoh, 1966
Antiquity Back in the 19th century, the area where Toa Payoh stands today was a natural swampland. A hint of this can be found in the etymology of the name “Toa Payoh”, which literally means “big swamp”. Swamps were a common sight in Singapore in the past, until plantation owners started settling inland and cleared the area. In the early 1900s, the swampland became home to villages, alongside large swathes of plantations from the 19th century. By the 1950s, the colonial government began acquiring land in the area for housing. This marked the start of the estate’s journey to modernisation, as the first housing estate planned and built by the Housing Board (HDB) in the 1960s.

When you talk about Toa Payoh(TPY), people know that it is a place where old people live, but upon visiting the site, we realized that toa payoh is always bustling with activities and is ever-changing due to the various events and exterior changes especially in the central part of TPY where condominium and mall are found. However as a group we look into the subzone of peichun (outside the central area of TPY).Where surrounding is self sufficient of it own due to the amenities around. SPECULATIVE INVENTION
PART 1 II DISRUPT THE WAY WE LIVE
What do we want our audience to experience? We want to tap into their subconscious mind and create harmony in an estate that seem to be losing their unity. We want to invite them to step out of their comfort zone, by disrupting the areas they have always felt comfortable in. Conversation starter Make their lift experience enjoyable Encouraging the sense of play? We want to be create an environment of play and education by disrupting the areas where people take for granted in their everyday lives. We don’t appreciate the time where we are waiting for the lift to come up and down, or when we are inside the lift, so by encouraging play. we make people more aware of their surroundings in which they don’t really notice throughout their commute. Since the elevator is what we use all the time, change it up to make the lift experience enjoyable. Possibly a conversational starter, teaching simple sentences in dialect/ language to say hello to the neighbour.

PART 1 II DISRUPT THE WAY WE LIVE
Disrupting by tapping on ppl emotions and personal space
Is going to be hard to design something that interrupts the way they live in TPY. Due to the lack of interactions of the residences in TPY base on what we observe and experiment. However, we find out the best way to disrupt the way people live is tapping onto the reaction and the emotions part of the human. By tapping on the emotions that allows them to realize what the living conditions that they are in and make/ wanting to make a different by themselves. By tapping on the reactions allowing us to experience what is like being a human being. Every person on this planet is different and has different thoughts, feelings, etc. As many said “the most honest reaction is the first impression you see the person.” we hope to tape in the first reactions of the disruption that is happing.

IDEA 1A HOME FOR ALL
To create a space where all residents in the block can feel comfortable and at ease in a common area - reinforcing and encouraging harmony in the neighbourhood. Nostalgic furniture, to give a sense of homeliness and not further reinforce the sense of alienation within the lift. Lenticular imagery is suggested for the animation which on the window, hopefully to capture the attention of people staring at the window of the lift hoping to get to their level as soon as possible.

IDEA 2INDIRECT INTERACTION
Another way for people to be part of the engagement process would be through actions, as “actions speak louder than words”. A simple gesture makes a big difference on how people start their day. An introduction to the game of chinese chess ( a common game ) is used to bridge and encourage people to interact and play along, allowing them to step out their comfort zone. People who are not in the game are able to understand the movements and gestures of it. It allows the residents to understand that a simple gesture goes a long way.

IDEA 3UNCOVERING THE PAST
To create a space where all residents in the block can feel Reversi brings in the excitement of what can be different everyday. We have selected images that highlight the uniqueness of the spaces in TPY by printing them onto the circles. By flipping them, people are allowed to observe what is beneath it and learn words of interaction such as ‘hello’ in different languages and dialects. There is a sense of continuity throughout the experience as most of the designs engages with the shape of a circle. (which represents unity) Tinted colour gel are placed within the circular opening of the buildings so as to engage users to look through it, giving them a new perspective of the outside. Every perspective is an opportunity of memories to be foreseen and acknowledged. At the end of the day, it encourages residents to notice their surroundings before it is too late and helps to reinforce the interaction of people coming together. As they say, Unity makes strength (团结就是力量).

FINAL PROPOSAL
PART 1 II DISRUPT THE WAY WE LIVE
we wanted to revive the the spirit of Gotong Royong. The Gotong Royong spirit goes hand in hand with the kampung spirit where it can even form bonds that is thicker than blood. With constant deliberation of the outcome of the project, as a group we decide to disrupt the lobby area and shelterd area. These are the areas where people would pass by, without giving a thought. They are used as a transactionional space to get from a place to other - be it rain or shine. It is almost like a communal spot. The pulley system was designed to aid the residents’ lives, for them to be more observant to their surroundings. It also allows the residents to reconnect to their community by having enhanced experiences along the shelter. Through this intervention, we hope that the residents are able to preserve the spirit of gotong royong.

PART 1 II DISRUPT THE WAY WE LIVE
DESIGN INTERVENTION Greatly inspired by our concept of waiting and seeing, we came up with our solution - “a walk with groceries”. We wanted to incorporate play in the residents’ daily lives by intervening what they use everyday. Because these shelters are connected to all blocks as well as their wet market, we thought it would be a perfect place to enhance the residents’ experience before reaching home. A pulley system that lines the sheltered walkway, it becomes a main feature that connects all residents together and leads up to the bustling activities under each block. Going at an automated speed, it causes residents in the area to slow down and observe their surroundings, while the pods above them assists them to carry their personal groceries.

The resting areas are placed near the shelter where residents who are passing by are able to rest and relax, while enjoying the aroma of the food. It might entice them to be curious, and it might aid in creating conversations between the people. The seats are placed in circular shapes, surrounding plantations at the centre. COMMUNAL KITCHEN -Lobby Area -
At the communal kitchen, residents are able to interact and gather to cook a hearty meal. The design of the kitchen is placed in such a way where it allows for further interaction and participation among the people. It is to also encourage the community to get together through the making of food. Food is a universal language that people connect with. Food brings people together; the movement of coming together; preparing and sharing a meal is the most communal thing that can happen. Using the pulley system, it also enables them to have access to food from the wet market. It allows the food to be transported over, making their lives easier as the time can be spent on having the community to come together to enjoy food.

Instead of wanting for user to “wait and see” to interact with the propose idea in part 1. Why can’t we just interact with it? Now a days people are fast on their feets. The attention require for them to wait and have an interaction with the scence or object is slim. My objective is to focus on the opposite side, which is “react & tackle.” In this part 2 : How or whats are the ways that i am able to disrupt the space to allow people to appreciate the space around them with the change of perspective in the way how user look and react into spaces.

Studies shown that people tend to think what they did throughout their days. Most commonly recall the things that they are unhappy about or the fondest memories with people.
