SARAH K. CANTU - SPRING COMMENCEMENT 2009

This was taken the Friday before graduation next to Mirror Lake in the center of campus. You can’t tell from here but Sarah is wearing flipflop sandals.

Again at Mirror Lake which is part of the original OSU campus. This is the site of the unofficial pregame swim the Thursday before the OSU/Michigan games. Although it looks deeper, Mirror Lake is only 2-3 feet deep.

The first verse of Carmen Ohio, OSU’s aluma mater, ends with “... How firm thy friendship ... O-H-I-O! Walk by anyone on campus and call out O-H and instinctively they will answer back I-O!

The Shakespearian Amphitheater is next to Mirror Lake. Directly in to the left of Sarah, behind the stage, is a set of bushes that “attacked” Sarah’s dad while he attended classes at OSU. Sarah claims she successfully avoid the evil shrubs for four whole years.

This rock is just to the side of the entrance to Orton Hall which houses Geological Sciences. This is the building that also plays the chimes you can hear across the oval and throughout main campus.

This photo is on the steps of the Orton Hall entrance, one of the original buildings on campus. A sample of every stone formation found in Ohio is used in the facade of Orton, from Lake Erie to the Ohio River.

At the middle of The Oval, buried under the sidewalks are steam pipes to help keep the sidewalks clear in the winter. Hidden in the lamp posts are the antennas for the wireless Internet access for The Oval.

Guarding the entrance to the Main Library at the bottom of The Oval is this statue of Bill, the fifth president of OSU, for whom the library memorializes. If you look closely, you can see where some jealous OU students from Athens tried to tag Bill. They choose poorly and suffered dearly. The library is undergoing a major refurbishment and addition and will reopen Fall 2009.

This is the backside of Independence Hall. And you’re thinking that’s all very fine and well but...Why? Well, this is the spot Sarah and her dad met up with the tour group when they first visited OSU the Summer before Sarah’s senior year in high school. This is where Sarah first became a buckeye.

After getting photos on campus, Sarah and her dad met up with the family at the El Vaquero mexican restaurant next to the hotel we were staying at. This is Nate Saum, Sarah’s boyfriend. He just graduated from Ohio University in Athens. He has been hired to OU’s football coaching staff and will be working on his Master’s degree.

Sarah’s dad, Victor, borrowed his friend Louis’ convertible and was under strict instruction not to let anyone drive the car but him. This is Sarah’s sister Brittany and her boyfriend Eric with Sarah in the back seat. Later, Britt pointed out that she would look so cool driving the car. Victor agreed, of course, and promptly handed over the keys. How could anyone say NO to that smile?

The Saturday before graduation, the College of Medicine’s School of Allied Health held a more personal ceremony for it’s graduates. Before hand, we all ate lunch at Five Guys Burger and Fries in the South Campus Gateway. If you ever go, order the small of everything. Just ask Sarah’s mom, Amy.

At dusk, E. Gordon Gee, the President of the University, held a candle lighting ceremony around Mirror Lake. Sarah caught up with him on The Oval...

“

Pres. Gee held a candle he called the Spirit of the University. He then passed the flame to faculty, staff, students and family who passed the flame to one another which spread around Mirror Lake and onto The Oval and throughout campus. Even hours later, students could be seen across campus with their candles lit.

This year’s Spring commencement conferred over 8,100 degrees on OSU students and was the largest number of students graduating in a single day in the nation. Bachelor, Master, PhD, MD, JD, DDS, DVM degrees were awarded.

It took over half an hour for all the students to enter the stadium. The banners that are being carried are for the various colleges of the university bestowing degrees upon students.

Before the start of her Freshman year at OSU, Sarah attended a leadership conference hosted by the John Glenn School of Public Affairs and met Senator Glenn. As a perfect bookend to Sarah’s college experience at OSU, Senator Glenn gave the 2009 commencement address.

Lost somewhere in this grove of buckeye trees is a fragment of a Cleveland Browns t-shirt that was worn by Sarah’s step-father who died when Sarah was in junior high. Her father buried it one day when he was visiting Sarah on campus so Greg’s spirt and energy could protect her from those terrible and evil bushes.
