The Studley Park Boathouse is, as its name implies, located in Studley Park, a vast area of greenery along the Yarra River 4km northeast of the Melbourne CBD. The existing boathouse looks over the river and the bridge, nestled in a valley near the bend of the river. The boathouse is replacing an existing one, in hope to improve the atmosphere and services. The main problems lies in the long distance between the river and the boat storehouse and how the new design should adapt to the slope of the valley.

The project aims to renovate the existing boathouse in the manner of the great architect Alvaro Siza. After analysing a few of his works, the major traits of his works are applied to the renovated boathouse design. These traits are: major axis, critical use of daylight, controlled view, clear differentiation of spaces, transitional space between the inside and outside, and the strong whitewashed concrete. The project focuses on framing the views of the visitors as the river is the main attraction of the park. Using walls on the border of the site isolates the visitors from the rest of the park. Then, windows are placed only where necessary, viewing the river and the bridge, thus emphasising the significance of the river.

Ecrou is located in the east most side of the Ceres Community Market, Melbourne. Ceres is a small organic market that is self-sustaining. The market covers an area beside Merri Creek, consisting of a cafe, organic shop, plant nurseries, playground, chicken coop, bee farm, education for children, etc. However, the site is detached from the creek that runs beside it. Thus, the project seeks to emphasise the connection of the Ceres community with nature and also the creek, as water is an indispensable part of our live and it is important to know the impact of our actions to it. Another requirement of the project is to use parametric software in making the design and structural components. Using the grasshopper programming it is possible to easily create connections to nature by patterning them onto the surface of the design. Ecrou is a tunnel made from grasshopper programming as a practice to imitate the MoMa PS1 reef installation. The elements in Ecrou however is made from timber and patterned with leaves to relate back to the natural atmosphere of the space. Openings let lights in that will create the atmosphere inside. The purpose of Ecrou is to direct people to a small opening that looks over the creek that is barely visible anywhere else, thus creating a more intimate space to view the creek. Page 10

The hive is a mixed-use facility for retails, offices, residential and gallery. Located in West Melbourne, the site is at the corner of Batman St. and Spencer St., spanning only 25 x 25m. The surrounding are mostly brick buildings which are formerly warehouses. Its position at the corner and the relatively short height of the buildings around allows a substantial amount of light reaching the site. The concept of the project is ‘the inner outside’. It aims to create a habitable space that sits on the threshold between the inside and outside. The threshold space will be the main attraction of the building, allowing visitors to experience both the outside and the inside atmosphere while staying protected by the facade. The atrium at the northern corner will serve as the habitable threshold. A permeable facade controls the amount of light coming into the building and provide the sense of openess while still being protected at the same time.
