8 THE OWENSBORO CHRISTMAS PARADE The annual Owensboro Christmas Parade is “Where Kentucky Starts Christmas.” The 2018 parade featured 100 floats and stretched 11 city blocks along 2nd Street.

9 O. Z . TYL ER D I S T IL L ERY

Owensboro has a rich bourbon tradition, stretching more than two hundred years thanks to its location, bountiful corn crop, and limestone-filtered water. Today, local bourbon distillery and Kentucky Bourbon Trail destination, O.Z. Tyler, combines traditional crafting and barrel-aging with modern day innovation to create a bourbon whose quality spans centuries of Kentucky distilling history.

THING S OW ENS BOROA NS S AY Welcome to Owensboro. We’re glad you’re here. Greater Owensboro is known for friendly folks and southern hospitality. Hopefully you’ve picked up on that already!

That being said, we definitely don’t want you to feel like an outsider for very long. So here are some Owensboroisms you should know about. We’re not claiming any of these make any sense – it’s just the way things are here in Owensboro. Pick up on these and you’ll be talking and thinking like a native Owensboroan in no time. It’s Not “Pop” First of all, we call soda “coke” whether it’s a Coke, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi or whatever. When we say coke we mean any carbonated soft drink. Loca l High Sc h ools Owensboroans call Daviess County High School “County” for short. But not so much “County High.” However, for some reason it’s perfectly acceptable to call Owensboro Catholic High School “Catholic High” or even just “Catholic” for short. Either way. But Owensboro High School is not “City” or “City High.” It’s “Senior High” because it started out as Owensboro Senior High School back in the day and we just never stopped calling it that. There’s no confusion with Apollo though. It’s just “Apollo.” There’s no other way to say it.

S M O T H E R S PA R K

Loca l La n d ma rks There are two bridges: the “new bridge,” which is out Highway 60 east of town, and the “blue bridge,” which is downtown. We don’t ever call them by their proper names (like Glover H. Cary, for example). We keep it totally informal when it comes to our bridges.

11

There is also no “East Parrish” and “West Parrish” Avenue to an Owensboroan. It’s just “54” on the east end and “Parrish” on the west end.

10 Named one of the top 10 playgrounds by USA Today, the Lazy Dayz park is a three-level playground.

TH E B LU E B RI D GE

An Owensboro icon, the Glover H. Cary “blue bridge” spans the Ohio River between Kentucky and Indiana. Originally painted silver, it was repainted blue in the ‘70s.

We don’t say “The Big Dipper” or “The Wonder Whip.” It’s just “The Dipper” or “The Whip.” Loca l Dialect To an Owensboroan, the names “Brian” and “Ryan” are one syllable. “Kyle” and “Cal” almost rhyme, even though they should sound nothing alike. For some unknown reason, we call garbage cans “toters” and knit hats “sock caps.” Some Owensboro folks put an “r” in the word “wash.” It’s not every day, but occasionally you will hear of someone “warshing” their laundry or car. Then some of us drop the “l” for no reason at all. As in “a five year ode” or a “bow” of soup. (Listen… it’s true isn’t it! Oops, I meant, “idn’t” it? Sorry.) We took a non-official tally and noticed that Owensboroans are about 50/50 on the pronunciation of Thruston. Incidentally, it could be said “Thruston Durmont Road” as it’s spelled or “Thurston (as in “thirstin”) Dermont Road.” Either way. Some folks will put a “the” in where there’s not even a “the” needed. As in, going to “The WalMart.” And of course, the number one thing that ONLY Owensboroans say is… “It’s Hot Don!” Thanks to the popular Don Moore car commercials. (Editor’s note: Of course we used that with permission because that’s actually a trademarked slogan now. That Don Moore is one smart guy!) O

Out-of-towners struggle with the pronunciation of Frederica Street. Owensboroans slur it like Louisvillians slur the word “Louisville.” You don’t say it phonetically. It’s pronounced “Fred-rick-uh.” Three syllables. Not “Fred-er-reek-ah.”

DID YOU KNOW?

USA Today recognized Smothers Park in a list of “10 Best: Playgrounds with way more than slides and swings” in 2015. The article describes “a new breed of playground” designed to welcome kids of all ages while taking special consideration for those with disabilities and sensory issues. Smothers Park is named after frontiersman William Smeathers, who settled in Owensboro in 1797.

The 2020-21 Greater Owensboro Relocation Guide

Smothers Park has become the centerpiece of Owensboro’s revitalized downtown district. It stretches five city blocks and covers five acres of land with a threelevel playground that’s completely handicapped accessible, which also entices parents and grandparents to play right along with their little ones. The people of Owensboro and visitors from across the region have found it’s easy to spend hours on a visit to Smothers Park. According to Public Events Director Tim Ross, that was the idea from the beginning. “The park was designed to offer something for everyone. There are amenities for all ages. Parents, grandparents and kids love the playground. Everyone can enjoy the viewing fountains, the swings and the overlook. And many of our older generation love the Shelton Memorial, which gets a tremendous amount of visitors because it’s such a beautiful monument and it gives such great respect to our POWs, MIAs and veterans.” The “Mayor’s Mile” riverwalk spans the riverfront from the RiverPark Center through Smothers Park all the way down to the Convention Center and hotels, giving foot traffic easy access to all the amenities downtown. Even when there’s not a live band playing, there is music playing from outdoor speakers hidden in the landscape. O

Today, RiverPark Center entertains, inspires and educates 200,000 people annually – including 25,000 children – through nearly 400 events. Cannon Hall, the premier 1,470-seat theater, is the home to Owensboro Symphony Orchestra and Owensboro Dance Theatre. The outdoor patio overlooking the Ohio River hosts the main stage for Friday After 5 while the 300-seat multi-purpose Jody Berry Cabaret Theatre is used for many civic, corporate, and private events. On several occasions major theatrical productions have been assembled, blocked, rehearsed and launched from RiverPark Center. In 2019, the lighting technical crew for the rock band O.A.R. used Cannon Hall to set up and program the light show for their three month summer tour. Whether it’s dinner and a Broadway style show, a night of dancing or a reception under the stars, RiverPark Center is where memories are made.

In addition to expos and conventions, some of country, rock and contemporary christian music’s top entertainers have performed at the Owensboro Convention Center, including Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, for King & Country, Casting Crowns, Black Stone Cherry and Travis Tritt. And anytime there’s a community event, the Convention Center is a part of it. FUN on the BLUEGRASS MUSIC HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM With the opening of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 2018, downtown Owensboro has become the world center for the presentation of the history, culture and future of bluegrass music. Museum visitors drift down the river of sound through exhibits to interact with the history of Bluegrass music and the people and instruments who made it. But it’s much more than a museum. The 440-seat Woodward Theatre and outdoor stage regularly showcase live performances by the genre’s iconic legends and brightest rising stars. Impromptu jam sessions often happen in the “pickin parlor” just inside the museum where visitors can pick up an instrument to pluck or strum along. It’s all part of the experience. When not used for live performances, Woodward Theatre is also used for movie screenings and other community events. The Hall of Fame is a “must see” for fans in town for ROMP, but Owensboro residents will find many reasons to come back again and again. O

hether you’re taking to the friendly skies or cruising the open road, getting to and from Owensboro is easier than ever thanks to recent transportation upgrades. Located conveniently between Nashville, TN, to the south; Louisville and Lexington, KY, to the east; St. Louis, MO, to the west; and Chicago, IL, and Indianapolis, IN, to the north, Owensboro is a tank of gas away from fantastic travel destinations. And with an airport, a parkway, and now an interstate in Owensboro, friends and family can visit you in the ‘Boro in a snap.

OWB

At Owensboro-Daviess County Airport (OWB), travelers can have the best of both worlds: small-town feel with big-city connections. Airport Director Rob Barnett says the airport has three daily departures to St. Louis through the Cape Air airline Monday through Saturday, and two on Sundays. Once you arrive in St. Louis you can connect to a major airline through a seamless experience. “You check your bags with Cape Air and then you see them again at your destination!” he said. In addition to those daily Cape Air flights, OWB also offers flights to Sanford/Orlando, Florida, through the ultra-low-cost carrier Allegiant. The whole experience of flying out of OWB is all about convenience. “Convenience is really what we sell,” Barnett said. “We sell low cost parking. We offer you a convenience factor for your time. Going through the TSA line here takes minutes and we have better times to depart out of St. Louis.” Barnett also sees his share of business travelers coming through the airport. “Corporate aviation is a big element,” he said. “Look at the local economy, people are coming in to do business and that turns into rental car and fuel sales…” “The airport is the first impression to corporate travelers when they’re looking to expand in our community,” he said. Barnett took on his role at the end of November and is excited about the job. His primary roles, he said, are the overall safety and security of the airport, maintaining

I-165

The former William H. Natcher parkway was officially designated Interstate 165 in August of 2019, directly connecting Owensboro to 1-65 in Bowling Green, KY. That designation was the result of a lot of hard work by community leaders in Owensboro, the state capitol, and all the way to Washington, DC. Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Candance Castlen Brake says I-165 an incredible win for our community. “This kind of success is what happens when everyone works together. Our local, state and federal transportation leaders and elected officials and their staffs have worked tirelessly on this. And our business community has been right there alongside them. They deserve recognition for their hard work and their dedication to making our community move forward.” Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin sees I-165 as an exciting milestone for western Kentucky and the entire Commonwealth. “With direct interstate connectivity, communities all along this corridor are well positioned for economic development opportunities and sustained growth. In addition to being economically transformational for the region, the physical upgrades to the roadway will enhance the safety and overall commute for those traveling along I-165,” Gov. Bevin said in a release. O

DOWNTOWN LIVING

C A RT E R / TA M A R A C K CORRIDOR

The redevelopment of downtown has brought along with it many new opportunities for upper-level living spaces. Several mixed-use buildings now being constructed include condos on the second and third floors above street-level restaurants and retail space.

2 5

WEST END Highway 60 is the main thoroughfare west of town to the Stanley and Reed area of the county. Parallel to the Audubon Parkway, Highway 56 winds through the Sorgho area to the gently rolling hills of West Louisville and Maple Mount.

3 DOGWOOD/AZALEA & HISTORIC DISTRICT Before Owensboro expanded to what is now Midtown and South Frederica, neighborhoods in the Parrish Avenue and Griffith Avenue area were considered the outskirts of town. In recent decades, neighborhoods have been developed along all corridors, both inside and outside the “bypass” (now known as US 60 Wendell Ford Expressway.)

4 10

MIDTOWN SOUTH As the city expanded, neighborhoods were developed around the Owensboro Country Club, along Old Hartford Road, eventually connecting with the 54 corridor. The heart of Midtown, known as the “Triplett Twist,” is in the midst of a massive overhaul.

5 EAST END & 54 The Highway 54 corridor has grown tremendously the past 10 years. Gateway Commons is currently in development, which will include 260 acres of restaurant, residential, and retail space plus two hotels, a movie theater, and more. Beyond 54, the busyness subsides to sprawling fields between Philpot and Whitesville, a town with a population of 550 just 13 miles from City limits. Along Highway 144, the community of Thruston boasts the Pearl Club and Yellow Creek Park.

The 2020-21 Greater Owensboro Relocation Guide

The Apollo area is populated with many intersecting neighborhoods that have easy access to US 60 Expressway, Parrish Avenue via Carter Road, and Frederica via Tamarack Road or Southtown Boulevard. Residents also enjoy access to the Greenbelt for strolling and biking.

7 WESLEYAN SHAWNEE On either side of the beautiful Kentucky Wesleyan College campus, the WesleyanShawnee area spans from Tamarack Road along Lewis Lane and beyond Scherm Road to Booth Avenue.

8 81 TO MCLEAN COUNT Y If sprawling front yards and wide open spaces are your ideal living condition, you’ll find plenty of both along Highway 81, which splits with Highway 56 at the roundabout west of City limits out Parrish Avenue. US 81 passes through the communities of Rome, Friendly Village and Livia on its way to Calhoun across the McLean County line.

9 SOUTH FREDERICA As the lights of busy South Frederica Street fade into starlight directly south of Owensboro, communities like Pettit, Browns Valley and Utica dot Highway 431.

10 231 TO UTICA Highway 231 parallels the William H. Natcher Parkway to the community of Masonville, home to the rapidly expanding Deer Valley development.

f your idea of going to the library is checking out a book from a dusty shelf, you’re due for a visit to the modern facilities of the Daviess County Public Library. Serving 92,000 people in Owensboro and Daviess County, the library boasts nearly 200,000 books as well as 14,000 DVDs, 46,000 eBooks and much, much more. The children’s area was recently renovated to be an enclosed, colorful space with a family bathroom. Shannon Sandefur, DCPL Community Engagement Manager, said the area has a strong play literacy element and includes a ball wall, Lite Brite wall, puppet theater, play kitchen, tool bench and LEGO table. The library offers several programs for children such as storytime, science experiments, character visits, summer reading programs, crafts and more. But it’s not all kids’ play. If you’re in need of entertainment, the library offers Hoopla - a streaming service for music, audiobooks, eBooks, movies, TV shows and comics. The service is free with an active library card. Aspiring gardeners might want to visit the Seed

Library, where they can “check out” up to five seed packets per month. Of course they don’t have to return anything, just sign the seeds out in the catalog and take them home to grow. You can even check out an instrument! Sandefur said the program started with a donation of instruments from Blue Star Connection. “The founder, John Wayne Catt, started a charity that puts instruments in the hands of children who are facing a terminal illness and expanded the program to schools and public libraries,” she said. The collection includes guitars, keyboards, ukuleles, one banjo, and one mandolin. There’s a 28-day loan period. For families up for a learning adventure, the library offers museum passes too. The passes allow up to four family members to visit not only the Owensboro Museum of Science and History, but also any museum affiliated with the Association of Science-Technology centers. That includes but is not limited to the Kentucky Science Center in Louisville, American Museum of Natural History in New York and National Museum of Natural History in the District of Columbia. They also offer YMCA passes, which provide individuals or families access to the facility for two weeks. If you’re still not convinced that you need a trip to the library, here are a few more items from their non-traditional collection: • Laptops that can be checked out and used throughout the library • Roku Streaming Sticks • Wi-Fi Hotspots • Telescopes • Maker Kits for children and teens to be used in the building O

hen you come for a visit, you may see a sticker on the window of a business that says, “Senior Friendly Business.” That’s because that business – and this community has made a commitment to provide the best possible customer service to the seniors in Greater Owensboro. If you are looking for an area to retire, or if you are considering a move and are needing services for an elderly family member or friend, Owensboro - Daviess County is certainly a community with much to offer. With 16.9% of our population being age 65 and over, and that number growing exponentially, our community is rich with resources and opportunities for engagement for seniors! The engagement prospects are endless for seniors here! Our beautiful Riverpark Center offers discounts to off Broadway productions, and symphony concerts, as does our spectacular Theatre Workshop of Owensboro. Our “Friday After 5” community gathering in downtown Owensboro each Friday evening during summer months features gospel music and salutes to Veterans, which our seniors truly enjoy. Local colleges invest in life-long learning by offering discounted and even free courses

for seniors! One local university is currently working on a designation as an “Age-Friendly University!” We offer outstanding volunteer opportunities which is an excellent way to meet others and learn about the community all at the same time. Some programs even offer a small stipend. Reach out to volunteerowensboro.com for more information! A unique quality that I think we have is our sincere desire to help people, especially within our senior community. We now have a no cost 2-1-1 service which one can call and explain a need and be given a list of possible resources to contact. There are also additional call centers available, such as the Green River Area Development District’s ADRC hotline, (800) 928-9094, which will connect you with a variety of in-home services for your loved ones including Meals on Wheels or Home Care Services. You can check out their website at GRADD.com. Another excellent resource is Audubon Area Community Services, at (270) 686-1600, which can connect you with public transportation for seniors, assistance with heating and cooling, senior housing options and senior in-home services audubon-area.com.

The 2020-21 Greater Owensboro Relocation Guide

There is also a local senior community

center which offers activities as well as programs and services and operates as a call center, the Senior Community Center of OwensboroDaviess County. You can reach out to them at (270) 687-4640 or seniorcenterodc.com.

Our local hospital, Owensboro Health has

made aging services one of it’s main focus areas and with that has really invested in programs and partnerships that support senior services within this community. For example, not only do they offer an outstanding Famer’s Market which offers vouchers to seniors for free produce, they also host the Golden Partners program (270-688-6855), which offers a variety of educational and fun opportunities for seniors! Our local YMCA offers the Silver Sneakers program (270-926-9622 owensboroymca.org). There are many churches within the area who offer senior programs, too.

As our community looks to the future,

ongoing provisions are ever-evolving to ensure amenities in Greater Owensboro are “Age Friendly” and continue to promote a healthy lifestyle and independent living.

Engage Owensboro, an initiative launched by the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce through a generous donation from the Marilyn and William Young Foundation, is an interactive database and board training program designed to more fully engage citizens in Greater Owensboro. Starting fall of 2019, non-profit organizations will be able to connect with individuals within the community who are interested in serving their organization whether it be through a board appointment, committee work or simply volunteering. Another key component of Engage Owensboro is specific board training opportunities that will be available to individuals within the community. This will ensure that individuals seeking to serve on boards would have the appropriate orientation to their role. It will also provide a pool of trained individuals from which both non-profits and municipalities could draw new appointees. For more information, visit chamber.owensboro.com.

PIGS ON THE STREETS

When visiting various shops and businesses throughout the Owensboro community, you may have noticed several large fiberglass pigs covered in everything from pennies to brightly colored painted puzzle pieces. These tastefully decorated swine are part of the “Oink for Owensboro project, an idea created by Kentucky Legend to generate financial support for area charities while bringing the community together around the local traditions of barbecue and the state of Kentucky. The initial vision for the project was to help provide a visual representation for the city of Owensboro while offering businesses an opportunity to participate in a creative act of philanthropy. Each fiberglass pig sculpture was designed by a local business who then selected a local nonprofit to receive a $5,000 donation. Kentucky Legend is responsible for the cost of each pig and everything involved in its preparation for display, resulting in the pork supplier investing over $40,000 in this venture each year. The company introduced 12 pigs in 2018, raising $60,000 for local charities, with every penny going directly to the nonprofit of each business’s choosing. In 2019, Kentucky Legend and area business sponsors revealed eight new pigs, bringing the total number of pigs across Owensboro to 20 and generating an additional $40,000 for local nonprofits. hamber Young Professionals (CYP), is part of the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce that provides professionals under the age of 40 an opportunity to network and become more involved in their community. It offers a fresh energy and a new perspective, according to past CYP chair Dave Kirk. Through community service projects, social events, corporate tours and professional development, CYP members are able to meet with other like-minded people and contribute to Owensboro, regardless of their place of employment. “This is important for those native to Owensboro, but even more important, in my opinion, for members like myself who are not from Owensboro,” said lawyer Erica Yartz, chair of CYP. Mario Vizuet, Relationship Banker at Old National Bank said that joining CYP was the connection he needed after relocating to Owensboro three years ago.“Within a year of joining CYP, I was invited to be on the executive board, I have been more involved in the community, I have met so many great people, and made close friendships with some of the CYP members,” Vizuet said. “I can help others make Owensboro feel like home.” With at least one philanthropic event and gathering opportunity each month, members

44

are offered the chance to get as involved in the community as little or as much as they would like. WFIE news anchor Shaelie Clark moved from outside Indianapolis to Owensboro three years ago, and she said that becoming involved in CYP helped her get to know people and learn about what is going on in the community. “You see, CYP gives you the chance to do something in your community,” Clark said. “It connects you with people who love their town and want to see it be the best it can be. So we get out in the streets, invite community leaders to come speak to us and work on projects that can make it a better place for not just us to live, but everyone else around us. When you see Owensboro succeed, you feel that sense of pride.” Clark recently joined the CYP community development committee whose focus is on community beautification projects such as updating the lobby at the regional airport. CYP was instrumental in bringing Lyft to Owensboro and creating the Owensboro mural downtown, painted by CYP Member Austin Casebolt, which Kirk said is very popular for pictures for both locals and those visiting Owensboro. The mural was featured in the Brand USA Hear the Music Campaign for The Wooks music video and documentary. “Those videos have over 5 million views at

this point, so the mural is turning into kind of an icon for the city,” Kirk said. Corporate tours allow members to tour and learn about local businesses and CYP holds lunch meetings where a community speaker discusses events within the community. Clark said that because of the different professional positions among members, chances are good that a CYP member works in an office that can help CYP make a difference in the community. “It allows its members to develop relationships, personally and professionally, and really tie themselves into the community,” Yartz said. Previous events include volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and the Western Kentucky Botanical Garden and collecting donations for Daviess County Animal Shelter. CYP was involved in the Go Vote campaign as well. “I know I’m not the only one who moved to town thanks to a job opportunity. I would recommend any newcomer to get plugged in right away,” Clark said, adding that when people are excited about the city they live in, they are motivated to make it better for no other reason than they want to see Owensboro be the best it can be. “How awesome is that?” Clark said. LIVING IN OWENSBORO

One TankROAD EVANSVILLE - 1 HOUR

If you’ve got any train buffs in the family, the Historic RailPark and Train Museum is not far from Beech Bend Park. And of course, the Corvette Plant and Museum is really the premier attraction in Bowling Green, especially seeing the Corvettes that were recovered from the sinkhole a few years ago. Pretty amazing!

Folks from Owensboro usually go to Evansville, IN to shop, eat out, go to a concert or take the kids to the zoo. However, Evansville also has lots of other adventures and attractions you can’t find in Owensboro, such as “Vertical Excape” indoor rock climbing gym.

On the way back from Bowling Green, stop off at Chaney’s Dairy Barn for some ice cream. It’s a pretty, country drive off I-165 and back, but it’s worth the time.

CMOE (Children’s Museum of Evansville) hosts four main galleries, plus a multimedia theater. Evansville Otters baseball at historic Bosse Field is a lot of fun as well.

Speaking of baseball, the Bowling Green Hotrods are the next closest ball club, and they are actually a farm team for the Tampa Bay Rays. Beech Bend Park is definitely worth checking out. It has been given a complete overhaul the last 10 years, and now has a waterpark, a steel roller coaster, and an overall fresh look and feel. The speedway and campground next door are still very popular too.

THE DISTRICT:

S

Dine, Drink, Discover

ince the summer of 2019, a new open container policy allows a portion of downtown to be considered an entertainment destination center known as “The District” which allows alcoholic beverages on public property during certain permitted special events such as Friday After 5. Patrons at participating businesses are permitted to leave the premise with an alcoholic beverage as long as they use a specially marked 16 oz. cup. Each cup has a list of The District guidelines printed on the side. “The District adds some attractiveness to our downtown,” said Assistant

City Manager Lelan Hancock. “It allows patrons the freedom to get out and discover what downtown Owensboro has to offer.” Hancock says the cups serve three purposes. “It allows local law enforcement to know who is carrying a drink in the downtown area. It allows businesses to know who’s participating and who’s not. And third, and most importantly, you have the rules in your hand. It tells you where you can go, what you can do with this cup, and it gives you a website as well to give you the map.” Around a dozen downtown establishments participated in The District when

it began in 2019, including the RiverPark Center, Owensboro Convention Center, Bluegrass Hall of Fame and Museum, and participating nearby restaurants. During the first few months of participation, Public Events Coordinator Tim Ross said most participating restaurants and bars saw an increase in sales. The community has responded positively as well. “The feedback we’re getting from folks being able to get a drink at the patio at Friday After 5, then walk down to a food truck, or another place for dinner and not have to be contained in one spot has been positive,” Ross said. O

RULES:

Alcoholic beverages are only allowed on public property during designated special events. District cups are never permitted inside: • Lazy Dayz Playground • Shelton Memorial in Smothers Park • Any church property Alcoholic beverages must be purchased from a participating business inside the boundaries of The District and will be placed in specially marked cups. Patrons cannot carry cups into another business location. Cups must stay within the boundaries of The District (look for signs that indicate the boundaries of The District)

Shopping Scene

wensboro is always growing and evolving, and our local boutique scene is no exception to that. Whether you’re looking for children’s clothes, home décor, or something for your grandmother, we’ve got you covered. One thing I love about the shopping here is that no two stores are the same. Each boutique is unique and inviting in its own way; with friendly faces greeting you as you walk in and helping you to have a positive experience. When you shop local, you are a part of something greater—you are helping people achieve their dreams, and allowing 26 families to own businesses and be successful. Bella Ragazza has launched a campaign called the Generations of Bella. The campaign features generations of women sporting the fabulous clothes, shoes, and accessories, and serves as a reminder of how all-inclusive our boutique scene really is. Speaking of generations, there is something undeniably special about shopping at stores like Excursions. This store opened in 1983, and is a constant symbol of what hard work, personal connections, and fashion, can do in Owensboro. I love THE EARLE the feeling of shopping somewhere my grandmother shopped, and my mom and I can both shop as well.

A D U LT AT H L E T I C S The Owensboro Parks and Recreation Department also organizes adult softball and volleyball leagues. Daviess County Church League softball is also very popular. And if tennis is your game, Centre Court is another amenity unique to Owensboro. The Owensboro Daviess County Tennis Association and the City of Owensboro have combined efforts to make a long-time vision of a new indoor tennis facility a reality. Centre Court opened in April of 2015, featuring six indoor courts and nine outdoor courts. The massive tennis facility is nestled in the sports complex at Russell Shifley Park off Bittel Road— visible from the Bypass. Pickleball is one of Owensboro’s fastest growing sports. It’s a cross between table tennis and badminton played with a wiffle type ball. Nearly 200 players from 12 different states registered for a tournament at Owensboro Convention Center in February of 2018. Visit OwensboroPickleball.org for more information on how and where to play.

Insider tips

FOR RENTERS: ›› Come prepared. The more information you have, the smoother the process. ›› Know your budget and credit score beforehand. This will help you know if you meet the minimum requirements. ›› Bring references with you. Know where you’ve rented from previously because property managers will check for landlord verification. A proof of employment letter from your current employer will also help. ›› Available properties are listed on the property management website. But since property lists can change daily in our market, it’s much better to get a current list of properties from the office. ›› Most websites also explain the application process.

LET YOUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS RUN AT CASTLEN DOG PARK After a groundswell of community support, city officials cut the ribbon on Owensboro’s first dog park in August of 2019. A memorandum of agreement between the City of Owensboro and the Owensboro Dog Park Association states the city will maintain the dog park if the association raised the money to build it. Led by local realtor Steve Castlen, a total of $100,000 was raised to construct the park. Castlen Dog Park covers roughly two acres on the back sector of Legion Park near the Veach Road entrance. Within the free area where dogs are allowed off leash, there are two fenced-in areas, fanning out into the wooded area of the park. One side is designated for smaller dogs and one for larger. The enclosure has rounded edges rather than sharp to reduce dog anxiety.
