very easy to work with. He was big on collaboration and very client-focused. But Deb says Kevin, the project manager, was the other star of the show. “He communicated well and talked through every detail and every decision. He always kept our budget in mind. He was unshakeable when things went wrong. He was like Superman,” Deb said, laughing as she recalled the time Kevin had to maneuver a 12-foot quartz slab around a corner while the painter was there painting. Before the remodel, the basement was unfinished with bare concrete floors. Now it has a bar and a guest bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. Enjoying their finished space, the Osers are particularly proud of how the basement looks like it was completed at the same time as the rest of the house. The bar is one of Deb’s favorite features. “Instead of taking up a lot of room, it’s wall-to-wall, with shiplap around it and nice quality trim work,” she said. The custom, handcrafted decorative wall is also an eye-catcher. Brandon Fields had an Amish woodworker do the trim work. The Osers look forward to seeing their extended family enjoy their new gathering space when the holidays roll around this year. Based on the 5-star review they left on Google, they’ll be excited to show it off. Their closing thought: “If you’re looking for someone to bring your vision to reality, Twin Spires is the one for you.” WWW.TOUROFREMODELEDHOMES.NET

had become out of level over time. There were
Before sagging beams, shifting and bowing joists, uneven floors, and drooping ceilings. Abell’s team added numerous beams to shore up the floors and ceiling. The floor plan was reimagined and designed by one of our nation’s “greenest” architects, Clive Pohl, of Pohl Rosa Pohl, in Lexington, KY. Porches on the front and rear allow the homeowners to manage their exposure to the sun relative to seasons. The property provides an additional four-season living space with a rear gazebo and a fire table. With an eye on current trends, Abell installed a modern stairwell with cable railing, a walk-in shower, a contemporary design and color scheme in the kitchen, and a double-sided fireplace that the homeowners can enjoy from two separate living spaces. They also added AZEK decking in the outdoor space that looks like natural wood but can withstand the changing Kentucky weather. Outside, extensive plantings and ground cover throughout the property provide a human connection to nature. Front and rear landscape lighting provides nighttime security. Another innovative upgrade unique to this remodel is the water catchment system that not only decreases runoff but also collects almost 2,000 gallons of water that can be used to efficiently irrigate the extensive landscaping. Indoors, a state-of-the-art water filtration system assures extraordinarily pure and healthy water. An ACT D’MAND System instantly provides hot water on demand. For better air quality, an Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) System efficiently exchanges the air in and out of the home, ensuring indoor air is fresh and pure. “I would put Brad Abell up against anyone in his understanding of the building science necessary to pull off the kind of high performance-ness that our home possesses,” Robert Fincher said. “Brad understood well that a green home should not be a home that simply bolts on green and sustainable components. Rather, a high performance home must be built as an integrated system. Brad listened carefully to what Barb and I desired, and they worked with us from beginning to end in a wonderful collaboration that created this home,” Robert Fincher said. Remodel with Universal Design in Mind L
ocal code ensures new construction homes and renovation projects reflect
the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Universal design, on the other hand, does more than make living spaces more accessible for those with disabilities. It expands on regulations to create more user-friendly spaces regardless of abilities, resulting in more enjoyable, functional design. Often, when people think of universal design, they’re thinking of design that reflects the needs of seniors who wish to age in place. That’s not always the case; universal design can also benefit families with special needs or simply serve as a smart investment for the future.
Principles of Universal Design To better understand universal design and how it might apply to your project, consider how the National Association of

Cabinet’s Walk-Through Pantry blends naturally into the rest of your cabinetry to create visual continuity. Integrated magnetic door catches add stability and keep doorways securely closed.
Wood Finishes After years of painted cabinets and woodwork dominating kitchen design, wood grain finishes are making a comeback. The look is cozy and inviting, and with a wide span of stain options, it is equally possible to take the look ultra-modern or veer toward a more traditional style. Outside of cabinetry, there is plenty of room to incorporate the warmth of wood, such as butcher-block counters or exposed beams.
Green, Blue and Earth Tones Jewel-inspired hues had their moment, but this season’s color scheme is more about subtle shades that meld with neutrals for lighter, brighter spaces that feel airier and more spacious. Greens, in particular, pair well with an array of wood finishes, whether cabinetry, countertops or furnishings. Integrating greens, blues and other natureinspired colors allows you to bring earthy serenity to a bustling and busy room, and this motif lends itself well to a design that creates a cohesive connection with adjacent outdoor living space.
Clever Storage Solutions The kitchen is a busy place prone to clutter, and this season you will find multiple examples of practical solutions showing up in showcase kitchens. The features that can make your kitchen chores easier and neater come in all shapes and sizes. For example, discreet knife blocks tucked into drawers, drawer dividers for maximum customization, and sliders that make it easy to empty the trash and recycling bins.
Marble Countertops Marble is not necessarily a new trend, but this year’s attention is on slabs of marble with eye-catching veins that make counters really pop. For a fresh take on marble, forgo the typical white, gray or black styles in favor of color. Standout gold veining or even full slabs with stunning greens, blues and reds can make a statement. If budget is an issue, or you are worried about too much of a good thing, consider using a bold slab on a smaller space, like the island, rather than outfitting the entire kitchen.
