After a few jobs in a corporate setting, I decided to strike out on my own. Illustration had always been a huge passion of mine, and I wasn’t doing a lot of that in the office. Since then, I’ve built a diverse portfolio with clients all over Kentucky and the US. I create everything from editorial illustration to print and tee designs. Kentucky is one of my favorite—and most frequent— subjects. It’s sort of been a mission of mine to show the world the complexity and beauty of the Bluegrass.”

from the editor The 2019-2020 school year ended in a way we never saw coming, but I am hopeful and looking forward for the new year to begin. My daughter has missed her preschool friends and her teachers so much. I cannot believe this will be her last year of preschool before she goes to Kindergarten. For those who have been through this, does it get any easier? I sure hope so because the thought already makes this mommy want to cry.

Ashley Gleason What a beautiful summer we have had so far. We are enjoying our weekends at the lake and playing outside at home. My daughter is so excited the parks have opened again, as she could spend hours playing at the awesome parks in our community. We ate outside at one of our favorite restaurants recently and it was so nice for life to feel normal again.

Melissa & Doug “My Daily Calendar”
My best friend bought her daughter this calendar. I told her how much I wanted one, and they gifted one to my daughter for her birthday. I love it so much. We can start our summer mornings off by going over her days of the week, weather, holidays, etc. It is a great way for her to stay engaged and practice what she is used to learning at preschool each day.
The Riverfront
Henderson’s Riverfront is always a beautiful spot to visit, regardless of the season. However, I feel like I have enjoyed it so much more lately because we were stuck inside our homes for so long. Taking walks or sitting downtown overlooking the water is one of my favorite places to be right now. Plus, my daughter loves the playground located downtown by the riverfront, so we get the best of both worlds.
Lemon Shake-Ups
Did someone say lemon shake-ups? Yes, please! As a kid, I always looked forward to going to my hometown’s county fair just to purchase one of these. Then, as I got older, a lady would open a small place for locals to purchase shake-ups and snow cones during the summer months. I found myself visiting there quite often, whether it be with friends or family. These are my absolute favorite during the summer months. They are such a refreshing, delicious drink.

EMPTY THE SHELTER The Humane Society of Henderson County participated in the Bissell Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelter” event May 9-16. Adoptions were $25, and those adopting had to be pre-approved and scheduled by appointment only. Locals were provided a link to view the animals available at the shelter, and a separate link to fill out their online application. Ardee Bell, HSHC Director of Marketing & Outreach, said, “Nine cats and twelve dogs were adopted from us during the “Empty the Shelter” event! We are so grateful to the Bissell Pet Foundation and our ever-supportive community for helping us spread the word and finding great homes for these special pets. At the end of the event, we officially had less animals in our shelter than we ever had recorded before. Please consider adopting or fostering a pet from us. You won’t regret it!”
RIDE FOR AUTISM The nonprofit organization, Experiencing Autism Together, held its annual fundraiser a little bit differently this year, due to the pandemic. However, it did not stop our community from coming together to show love and support for an organization that has made such a positive difference to so many. On Saturday, June 20 the organization held the event “Riding for Autism” instead of their annual walk. It began at 10am, where everyone met at the Henderson County Fairgrounds and had a quick service while remaining in their vehicles. They then proceeded to parade downtown to the Riverfront, with this being optional for those in attendance. This event was free to the public, and many arrived with their vehicles decorated to show their support. T-shirts were sold both on the day of the ride and previously on May 30. The funds raised at this event went 100% back to this organization to be used for helping autism families within our community.
THE “NAILED IT” CHALLENGE: A VIRTUAL BAKING COMPETITION The SoFA (School of Fine Arts) Foundation was so excited to host the “Nailed It” Challenge to benefit fine arts students in the School of Fine Arts program at HCHS in Henderson, Kentucky. The fundraiser was held from June 27-July 2 for the Virtual Baking Competition Fundraiser. HallieCakes baked the cake that contestants were asked to replicate. There were specific rules contestants had to follow, as community members were able to compete against family and friends from anywhere in the region and win gift certificates to be used anywhere in Henderson. Winners were given Henderson Chamber Gift Certificates, with 1st place winning $200, 2nd place winning $100 and the Worst Cake Award winning $50. Everyone had the chance to win the cake being replicated from HallieCakes, and Holly Jenkins Connaway, a teacher at HCHS, won and paid it forward by gifting it to the hard-working staff at the Sheriff’s Office.

These cupcakes can be made with any cake mix (including boxed) and frosting that you’d like, making them both easy and customizable. They make a great treat for summer birthdays - the best part is they won’t melt like ice cream does! They can actually be easier to eat than the cupcakes with typical cupcake liners, so that means a lot less mess and much more fun! WHAT YOU'LL NEED: ›› 1 batch of prepared cake mix (can be boxed) ›› 22 ice cream cones (with flat bottoms) ›› 1 tub of frosting (or more) ›› Toppings (sprinkles, nuts, cherries, etc) INSTRUCTIONS: ›› Preheat oven to 350°, and set the ice cream cones in the wells of a cupcake tray. Prepare the cake mix according to the directions on the box/ recipe you’re following. ›› Pour cake batter into each ice cream cone - 2/3 of the way full. Photos and recipe by Jamie Alexander

›› Bake until the cake inside is golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. ›› Once the cupcakes have cooled completely, top each with your choice of frosting/toppings. I recommend a star tip to give the frosting more of an “ice cream” look! I also softened vanilla frosting in the microwave to get the “whipped cream” look on top of some of the ice cream cones. HF

THE CURLIN’S EXPERIENCE George Floyd’s death on May 25 spawned a swift, national public response to the issue of racism in this country. Floyd, an African American man, was killed by a police officer in Minneapolis who knelt on his neck until he died. The event kickstarted large protests and rioting, causing businesses to board up their windows and mayors from many large cities to initiate nightly curfews. Henderson is often privileged in that it doesn’t usually see local impact from national events. It’s easy to look at our town and see how it thrives and how our community bands together. However, racism isn’t just a big-city problem. David Curlin, Henderson’s only African American attorney, recalls a time when he represented two juveniles who were caught with marijuana at a school. “The white juvenile was basically given a slap on the wrist. The African American juvenile was charged with a felony; trafficking within 1,000 feet of a school. The only difference was the discretion of the police officer.” When David pointed out the unfairness to the prosecutor, the white juvenile was upgraded to a felony. “I can see how race affects charging of crimes.” Mr. Curlin’s mother attended Attucks School in Hopkinsville, KY. Attucks was the first public school for black students in the area. Amanda Curlin, David’s wife and a social worker adds, “It would be irresponsible for us to say that racism doesn’t still exist in Henderson. Only a couple of generations ago schools were segregated. Those people who were in favor of segregation are still alive.” Being a white woman, married to a black man and mother of two biracial children, Cadence and David Jr., Amanda has a diverse perspective on how she has experienced racism. Once when she was working at North Middle School, she had a white student notice a Curlin family photo on her desk. “She said it was against the Bible for a black person and a white person to be together,” Amanda describes. “I had to tell her that’s not what my Bible says and just leave it at that.” Another example she recalls is of an evening years ago when she was a teenager aimlessly cruising around town 16 HENDERSON FAMILY
. August // September 2020
one night with friends, as teenagers are known to do. She was pulled over by a police officer who asked, “if my parents knew I was driving around with a bunch of black kids.” Mrs. Curlin continues, “I told him I wondered how they would feel if they knew you were questioning me about that and pulling me over for that specific reason.” The officer panicked. “That was my white privilege. I was able to challenge him, and he backed down from me. If I were a black woman, I wouldn’t have had that advantage.” Both parents acknowledge concern they have for their son and daughter regarding race relations.
ADVOCATING FOR POSITIVE CHANGE The most notable way in recent weeks that people have risen up against racism is by protesting. Henderson has been host to protests this summer, which has been greeted and welcomed by some and condemned by others. The Curlin family are in favor of protesting.
“Many people don’t like having those difficult conversations because it makes them feel uncomfortable. Protest are segue to those conversations. I believe any kind of protest that brings light to issues causing those discussions to happen is good,” expressed David. June 6 was a hot Saturday afternoon in Henderson when a large crowd of protesters, many holding signs marked “Black Lives Matter” and quotes from famous civil rights activists, marched the streets of downtown. The protest was reported as being peaceful and garnered much attention in local media. Amanda is quick to point out that they are not anti-police with these efforts. “People think Black Lives Matter (BLM) is exclusive. That if you support BLM, it means you must be against police officers. That’s not necessarily the case. It’s just a matter of acknowledging there is racism in the criminal justice system, and it needs to be addressed,” she confirmed. David agreed adding, “I do not think all cops are bad. It’s easier to
see racism when it’s right out in the open. With the example of the police officer kneeling on the person’s neck, that’s cut and dry racism. Seeing that then assuming all cops are dirty isn’t what this is about. There needs to be dialog about it though. Better policing and acknowledging of racism will help everybody in the long run.”
A COMMUNITY BANDING TOGETHER Despite the disturbing images on social media and the grim reporting on the news stations, there is much reason to be hopeful. “Unfortunately, many people live in a bubble where they don’t interact much with minorities, so they don’t see the ongoing battles that monitories have. They don’t understand the advantages they have naturally built into the system,” David asserts. One way to help change some perspective and to better represent the ideas of all Hendersonians is to have more diverse opinions heard. “More
people of color need to be asked to the decision-making table. They need their voices heard so you don’t have unintended consequences that result in one race being affected in a detrimental way.” David elaborates by adding, “Once you’re caught in the eco chamber of four white males making all the decisions then the outcome is not what you hoped it would be. The most important thing is to get more diverse voices heard. If there were more people of color on different boards in town then I think that would help.” David confessed that he is usually the only African American on the various boards he sits on in Henderson, expressing that it is exhausting for him and the short list of other African Americans who sit on boards to be the only ones to represent the black community. Another way to progress towards racial equality is to start at home. “White people need to speak up and call out racism when they see it. If your family member says something that is racist, and you don’t speak up
they assume you agree with them. Small steps like that would help move things in a positive direction,” Amanda says, adding, “I see that it gets better with every generation. Kids disagree with their parents when confronted with their racism. Interracial relationships aren’t taboo anymore.” Stepping outside of comfort zones to get to know minorities and build relationships with them, asking for their opinions and to join local boards, peaceful protests, calling out racism and setting good examples for the upcoming generation will position this community towards peace and fairness. Working together, we can make Henderson a safe place for everyone to call home.

and I mused, “If you don’t read well, you don’t do anything well.” Reading is such a fundamental part of any professional career. It is also a great way to manage mental health. And there is much to be said for constantly expanding your mind and being open to new ideas. I won’t bore you with studies, though there are myriad studies that promote the idea. Let’s elaborate on one anecdote. Mrs. Danielle hosts a reading event for newborn babies and expectant mothers. Nearly 10 years ago, an avid fan of the library and expectant mother, Hayley Mortis, would attend those events and listen to the books Danielle would read out loud. Once her baby boy Merrick was born, she knew it was important to continue going to the library to the reading groups. Merrick, as a newborn, came to the library and when he heard Danielle’s voice he turned and looked for her. Danielle will never forget that moment.
We know reading is important, but how can we create
habits to make books a continual part of our lives? Take the idea of the Story Walks, making reading an interactive event. Then also think about people spending time at the beach reading, parents and children sharing bedtime stories. That’s awesome, so how can we incorporate it into our busy lives? What about going to the park for a day of reading? What about sitting on the patio or turning on an audiobook and walking around? Speaking of, why not listen to an audiobook on your next road trip?
In the end, it is all about habits. Trying to instill in your
children a love of reading. It is about parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles reading and talking to kids about books. Challenge our children. Read a classic. Read an instruction book, comic book, graphic novel, Anything. Anything at all. Don’t forget. The most important advice. Read for fun!

A Letter from Henderson County Schools New Superintendent,
Bob Lawson
DEAR HENDERSON FAMILIES,
It is with great enthusiasm that my family and I are returning to Henderson. Sarah and I have a love for the Henderson community, Henderson County Schools and consider ourselves Hendersonians. As many of you may already know, we lived in Henderson previously for a total of seven years. First serving as teacher and defensive coordinator for the Colonel Football team, my wife and I were welcomed with the open arms of Henderson hospitality and developed a great sense of pride for our school and this community. Later as an administrator in the district, I began to understand and appreciate the vision and mission of the school district. Our Board of Education, district leadership, departments, principals, teachers and staff work diligently and collaboratively to put our kids first and invest in our community. Through experiences like the Henderson Leadership Initiative, my eyes were opened to the endless potential for this community when the school district and other sectors collaborate to give our students the best possible chance for future success. Our family looks much different than it did in 2007 when it was just my wife and I with our pick up truck pulling a little trailer behind. Though we still have the same pick up truck, we are now moving back with a U-Haul and three children. Our oldest daughter, Grace, is 9 years old, Ruth is 6 years old, and we have a son, James Randall (J.R.), who is 10 months old. We look forward to raising our children here and being part of this wonderful community. As the 2020-2021 school year approaches, I am very excited to meet our wonderful staff, and our exceptional students and their families.
SINCERELY, BOB LAWSON

In doing so, Mark has been able to get up close and capture the personality of many animals. He strives to share the beauty of his photography with others.
