Christmas Tree Cakes

Is it really Christmas if your pantry doesn’t have a box of Christmas tree cakes? Ha. I am not big on sweets. However, I don’t mind a Christmas tree cake or two during the holiday season. The rest of my family though - they can’t get enough of them. Let’s just say we may or may not go through several boxes when these treats are in season.

THE BUZZ

A KINDNESS ROCK GARDEN IS COMING TO HENDERSON MARCH 2024

A “Kindness Rock Garden” is in the works for downtown Henderson, all thanks to Katelyn McMillan, a Realtor with ERA First Advantage Realty. She saw the idea on Facebook and noticed there were several people in Henderson sharing and wishing Henderson had something like it. Without hesitation, she took the idea and ran with it. She was granted the approval for the garden to be located at Red Banks Park at the loop. The goal is to have this area complete by March 2024. But a rock garden is only complete with rocks. “I’ve had a few calls that have resulted in a partnership. Central Academy is going to allow their students to paint 20-30 rocks each month and then take a field trip down to the spot to deliver them. Henderson YMCA is going to have the kids that attend their camps paint rocks as well,” Katelyn said. For others interested in participating in this community project, you may paint a rock or rocks (any size/ shape) and drop them off at the ERA office. Katelyn said, “Please make sure you add a clear coat on top as these rocks are going to be sitting outside in the sun, rain, snow, etc.” The Henderson community is excited to see this new project unfold.

THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF HENDERSON OPENS DOORS AT NEW LOCATION

The Boys and Girls Club of Henderson opened their new home at the Armory building on Monday, October 23 to the community of Henderson. A gala was held on Thursday, October 19 to celebrate the donors, volunteers and supporters who have been able to make this possible. The Boys and Girls Club provides a fun and safe space where members can learn from positive mentors and participate in evidence-based programs. Their programs fall into three categories: Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles. Boys & Girls Club of America provides evidence-based programs in each of these three areas. The programs come equipped with a curriculum, facilitator’s guide, and pre and post test so they can track the effectiveness of each individual program. Their new home is equipped with an iWall, 3D printers, a gaming center, an art room, a teen center, and so much more! The new facility has also allowed them to take in more club members and provides members with unique resources and opportunities to help them learn and grow! They aim to build great futures for every member in their club. To sign up a child or get more information about the afterschool and summer programs, you may contact the Unit Director, Detona Wilson, at 270-869-4219.

PARENT PROFILE

Ryan Stoner & Stephanie Gentry Co-Owners of Radiant Sun Boutique Photo by Darrin Phegley

Tell us a little about yourself (family, pets, etc) Ryan: I come from a huge loving family, I was raised in Henderson/Union Counties. I went to Henderson Community College where I met my best friend and husband, Tim. Bless his heart, he’s also known as the shop IT director and handyman. We have two wonderful boys, Kai and Cove. They are the center of our universe. I can’t see myself being anything more than a boy mom. Stephanie: I was raised in Union County and met my husband D.W. (who grew up here in Henderson) in 2013 shortly after graduating from WKU. I have lived in Henderson ever since. I love it here. We have two beautiful children Ryan (17) and Lincoln (7). They are our entire world, they keep us busy and crazy at the same time. What do you do for a living and how long have you been in those positions? Ryan: First and foremost I am a mama to two handsome boys! Along with that, I am a Registered Nurse and small business owner. I have been in healthcare for 16 years. I was in Neonatal Intensive Care for 8 years and just recently transitioned to outpatient care to be able to spend more time with children. Stephanie: I am a Credit Analyst at Field & Main Bank; I have been with them for 6 years. At Field & Main, I immediately felt at home, it’s a great place to be. In 2019 my best friend, Ryan, and I started Radiant Sun Boutique, so I am also a small business owner. Has being a business owner in retail always been a dream of yours? Ryan: Stephanie and I have been best friends since the 6th grade! We’ve dreamed of owning our own boutique since we were in high school. We would talk about it, never knowing it would actually happen. Now that it’s a reality, it’s surreal yet empowering. To know that we made it happen through a recession , Covid , having multiple jobs and new babies proves that we can do whatever we put our minds to! Stephanie: Yes! We have been best friends for 25 years and would always talk about having our own clothing store. It being our reality is surreal. Sharing a dream and success with someone who has been through so much of life with me is the best. I have always had a love for fashion. Outside of working in retail, what hobbies do you and your family enjoy? Ryan: We love going on evening walks, playing soccer and having family movie nights by the fire with a big bowl of popcorn and homemade cookies. Stephanie: In my spare time, I love spending time with my family and friends. I love hosting, it’s my favorite. On Sundays, our family comes over to cheer on the Steelers, Raiders and Dolphins — we’re a house divided. I will take any chance I can get to

8

HENDERSON FAMILY . December 2023 // January 2024

chill out and binge my favorite TV show — currently I am rewatching Gilmore Girls. What do you enjoy most about being a boutique owner in the heart of Henderson? What are some challenges? Ryan: The fact that we get to make our dreams a reality is wonderful but then add a whole support system and community to that equation and it’s the best feeling a girl could ask for. We get to develop great relationships through this journey that we wouldn’t have had if it weren’t for RSB. Stephanie: What I enjoy most is our customers and the support of our community. It feels so good having repeat shoppers. It sounds cliché but they truly become friends. I just love to see them and catch up with them. Without our customers and support of our community, we would not exist. The most challenging situation as a business owner has been the struggle through the pandemic and now the recession, but I have faith in our boutique that we will get through it and thrive while doing so. Describe what a day might look like during the busy holiday season and what it means to local businesses to have the community’s support to shop locally. A day as a local business owner during peak season is a little bit of chaos, mixed with long nights, busy days and lots of fun! It’s our favorite time of year, even though it’s the most stressful. Seeing our customers and hearing their stories makes all the work worthwhile. When you walk into our shop , you’re bound to meet one of our family members as they’re all RSB staff. We strive for it to be a great experience versus grabbing something off your checklist. We have lasting relationships with our supporters that go way beyond your next Target run. Our community has transformed tremendously within the last few years and will continue to grow. This is thanks to the outpouring of support from our neighbors and keeping business right here at home. How do you find balance between work and family — especially during the holidays? Finding balance between work and family during this season of life is a collective effort. It takes a village. Our loved ones are always willing to lend a helping hand. That combined with any spare moment after family duties are finished are working out great for us. Whether it’s late nights after kids are asleep or lunch break inventory inputting, photo editing, ordering, etc. — it all comes together in a blissful equilibrium that works. We are so thankful for our tribe because without them this dream wouldn’t exist. What advice would you give to someone interested in opening their own business? Do your research ! It’s a whirlwind, and you need to be fully prepared for the diligence and commitment it takes to start a business. It’s a round-the-clock dedication. But after you reap the benefits of your hard work, it makes it all worthwhile. HF

Seeking a New Path Mero, now 89, was just 22-years-old when he left his family in 1957 during an era marked by political turmoil and shifting governments in the Dominican Republic under the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. table. Mero pushed his children to work hard as well. Juan and his brother worked summer jobs, always having something to do. Juan, through his summer jobs, was able to save enough money for tuition and went to college where he worked to become a chiropractor, his brother following in those same footsteps, currently working as a professor and clinic director at the Logan University Chiropractic School in St. Louis, Missouri. “As a parent, he wished to see his kids grow up and have a better lifestyle and have opportunities for them to fulfill their wishes and dreams. So with that, I had to honor him,” Juan said. “Looking back as I grow older, I realize, there’s no way I would have done what I’m doing — he worked so hard to give me a foundation to get educated.” Though he is now retired and spending more time with his wife, Sheri, children and grandchildren, Juan spent 38 years building his own chiropractic practice and a name for himself in his community through Nuñez Chiropractic, PSC. Juan attributes his successes to his father and the values Mero instilled in himself and his brother from a young age. And now, Juan said, he is able to see those same values and work ethics in his own children and watch them pass those onto their children. He said his practice thrived due to a strong work ethic, values, and a commitment to treating people fairly. He embraced what his father taught him and his brother about hard work, family, and the importance of instilling values in future generations. Now, four generations later, Juan’s family continues to thrive, building on the foundation laid by his father’s resilience and determination. His children, now adults with families of their own, carry on the family legacy. Their multigenerational success is a testament to the enduring impact of strong work ethics, family values, and the resilience to overcome challenges. “Dad’s dream was to have a good job and take care of his family and everything else fell into place after that,” Juan said. “The U.S. is known as the land of opportunity. The American Dream is whatever you want to make it. If you have a dream and a drive and a good foundation to keep moving forward, you can find the American Dream anywhere.”

Lofton may still be alive, enjoying his time as a college student. Mrs. Hazelwood fondly reflects on the last time Lofton made a trip home from UK while he was a student there. “He came home because they were harvesting, and he wanted to drive the auger wagon,” she giggles, thinking back. “He sent me a message saying, “Nothing like the smell of freshly cut beans.” Lofton’s lifelong love of the outdoors is channeled so that future students can enjoy the same pleasure as they venture to college in similar fields of study. Just Be Claus: A Christmas Story

By: Barbara Joosse Even as a baby, sweet little Claus seemed different. He didn’t cry like the other babies and with his rosy cheeks and round little belly, he was a jolly soul. His grandmother declares he is precisely perfect! But as Claus grows, the little boy worries that he is different from other kids: he has a loud hearty laugh, he likes to wear red all the time, and his favorite hangout is the workshop with his grandmother. And at hockey, he helps the other team win because he doesn’t want the players to feel bad. When Claus confides to Grannie that he’d rather be more like the other kids, she tells him his differences make him special. She tells him to be himself, “Just be Claus.” Claus is sure Grannie is wrong. But then a snowstorm threatens to ruin Christmas. Can Claus figure out a way to use what makes him special to help save the holiday?

Santa Snack By: Allison Black It’s Christmas eve, and after a busy night of delivering presents, Santa is hungry! But will he be able to find the perfect snack before flying home to the North Pole? Splat the Cat: Christmas Countdown By: Rob Scotton Splat the Cat is so excited for Christmas! Join him and his family as they decorate their tree, wrap presents, and find out what makes a holiday extra warm and fuzzy in this special touch-and-feel book.

Murray Christmas By: E.G. Keller In this laugh-out-loud funny and charming holiday tale, lovable “patrol dog” Murray is put on high alert by all of the sudden changes around the holidays--from the tree in the living room to the laundry mistakenly hung by the fireplace, threats lurk everywhere! And worst of all? Some random guy in a red suit keeps showing up everywhere--and Murray is not impressed. Can he learn to embrace the festivities, or will Murray’s misguided attempts to protect his family ruin Christmas?

Christmas Tree Farm By: Ann Purmell Most shoppers don’t know that a family has worked all year long planting, pruning, measuring, and tagging trees. This vibrantly illustrated book shows the entire process from seedling to decorated tree as a warm-spirited family carries on a holiday tradition. HF
