Building a Legacy
As I write this, it’s hard to believe that we’re almost a third of the way through 2024. Time flies, as we all know, and it’s important to make the most of that precious resource – by investing in others and making memories along the way. I’ve recently had a few opportunities to take a trip down memory lane through seemingly random interactions with folks who worked with or knew my dad from his days at the phone company. Dad spent over 40 years diligently working for South Central Bell in its various iterations over the decades. Over that span, he developed countless friendships and stories that still resonate to this day.

Occasionally, I’ll bump into someone whose father worked with Dad at the phone company, or his dad, my papaw, who worked there before he did. More recently, I met someone whose husband was Dad’s coworker. She knew both of my parents, and my grandparents, and shared stories about the days before I was even born.
Also, in editing this issue, I made another phone company connection. Todd Johnson is the organizer of the Backyard BBQ cookoff, a competition that we feature in this issue. Todd’s father, Horse Johnson, was a longtime South Central Bell employee, and as I proofread the article, a lightbulb went off. Dad and Horse spent several years working together on the South Central Bell cooking team during BBQ and Barrels (formerly the International Bar-B-Q Festival). And Todd and I both spent countless days in May visiting our dads while they stood watch over the enormous barbeque pits downtown. Todd even sent me a photo of a framed picture from a magazine article in the 80s that proudly featured Dad, Horse, and all of their teammates.
What I take from these interactions is that you never know what impact your life will have on others. It’s great hearing others recount stories about my dad and my family – especially since they’re all positive. But that’s because he was intentional with his time, whether at work or at home. And in being intentional, he’s built a legacy that I can be proud of.

WHAT I’M READING
It’s Hard for Me to Live with Me by Rex Chapman
To be fair, I haven’t started reading this one yet, but it’s definitely next on my list. I would safely bet that most of our readers know of Rex Chapman, the kid from Owensboro who played basketball at the University of Kentucky in the 80s and went on to have a long and successful career in the NBA. Those that don’t know him from his basketball days may recognize him from Twitter or from his public struggle with addiction, and subsequent recovery to become a motivational figure. Either way, Rex is a Kentucky legend. According to Goodreads, in his memoir “Rex shares intimate details of his life on and off the court, with his addiction and mental health issues front and center. Race, politics, family and friendship are woven throughout in a story of recovery.” I can’t wait to start reading it.

Suzanne Craig named 2024 ATHENA Award
Recipient
Suzanne Craig, Public Health Administrator at Green River District Health Department, was awarded the 2024 ATHENA Award by Girl’s Inc. on Tuesday for her service to young women in and outside the community. The annual Legacy Award — which honors a woman posthumously for her contributions to society — was awarded to the late Hattie Louise Neblett and a special honor for the AAUW. Craig’s nomination form described her as “a skillful business and professional woman, but a nurturer, a trusted mentor to many and a trailblazer in advocacy, support and empowerment of women.”
Kizer Partners with Dinger Bats
Local artist Aaron Kizer has partnered with Dinger Bats — a manufacturer that crafts bats for players at all levels, including the Major Leagues — to hand-paint three separate exclusive series of 10 bats for art and sports collectors alike. Kizer and Dinger Bats will release the first edition of bats on April 1, Major League Baseball’s Opening Day. Kizer will sign and number each bat. When combined with the other two releases, the set will create a finished piece. Bat 1 of 1 in the first collection will initially be available on June 21, during Kizer’s art show — titled Yousuf — at the Owensboro Convention Center.

Newton Parrish Hosts Amazon Donation
Day
Newton Parrish Elementary School’s gymnasium transformed into an Amazon warehouse on Friday, March 22, with each student taking home two items for someone in their life for free. The school is the first of several throughout the Owensboro Public Schools district that will host an Amazon Donation Day. According to Principal Andrew Self, “They’re not shopping for themselves. They’re shopping for an adult in their life, a parent, a friend, something that they could use, or something they can eat in their house. We’re really trying to do this mindfully and thinking of someone else.”

Jerry Garcia Exhibit opens at Bluegrass Hall of Fame
Most known for his work as the lead guitarist and vocalist for the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia had a love of bluegrass music, and the genre played a major role in his career. A new exhibit highlighting Garcia’s early years as a banjo player, his deep connection to bluegrass, and the influence it had on his legendary career opened on March 28. The exhibit traces Garcia’s musical evolution from folk and bluegrass scenes in the ’60s to forming bluegrass bands such as the Black Mountain Boys. It delves into pivotal moments, including his road trip to explore bluegrass in 1964, and highlights collaborations with influential bluegrass musicians like David Grisman, Tony Rice, and Peter Rowan.

Owensboro’s Fulkerson
Launches New Video Game
Owensboro native Seth Fulkerson has been pursuing his passion for video game development in 2022. After being laid off from the mortgage industry earlier that year, he launched the software development company Seedy Eye Software. As an independent video game developer, he recently released his first commercial title, “Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore.” He said the game pays homage to the early 1990s CD-ROM-style game.
“Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore” is available now for PC and all modern video game consoles (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X). For a link to each version, visit arzette.com.

When gun violence affected Will Evans personally, he decided to do something about it.
In the last few years, Evans’ wife’s sister (Stephanie Green) and cousin (Chris Green) were both victims of gun violence. Not only that, Evans occasionally hears gunshots ring out in his neighborhood. Will started thinking, What could I do about it? How can I help? What can a normal guy like me do to turn things around?
Art was his answer.
More specifically: getting kids involved in the arts. Which might seem small, but sometimes small changes can have huge ripple effects over time.
“Art is a positive outlet for me,” Evans told Owensboro Living . “Art is inspiring and all about positive expression. A lot of kids find community through sports, which can be a positive outlet, as well. But not all kids play sports, and art can be experienced by everyone. So I thought, ‘Let’s just have a summer camp where we do art with kids every day.’” The idea began as simple as that.
At first.
But now, other community organizations and local artists have gotten involved, and Will’s art camp idea has grown into something bigger than Evans ever dreamed.
It has since evolved into the Estes Bulldog Art Camp, which consists of a week-long summer art camp for two separate age groups. The week of June

THE SPINNERS
MAY 12 @ RIVERPARK CENTER
RiverPark Center will host the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Spinners. Timeless in a way that few other acts are, The Spinners are one of the most iconic and enduring groups in R&B history. With a towering legacy spanning over six decades, The Spinners have never lost their universal appeal. In 2021, they returned with their first all-new original album, the aptly titled, “Round the Block and Back Again.”
24-28 is for kindergarten through 2nd grade. The week of July 15-19th is for 3rd through 5th grades. Both weeks of camp run 8am - noon at Estes Elementary. [Editor’s note: Estes Bulldog Art Camp is open to Estes students this first year, but the hope is to open it to all Owensboro Public School students next year.]
Kids will be learning from guest artists each day and using different mediums throughout the camp, including pencil, ink, acrylic, paint on canvas, sidewalk chalk, and clay sculpting.
Evans says art has always been a huge part of his life. He grew up reading comics and watching his dad do art, so he’s always been around art. But in his young adult years he abandoned it while he was raising a family and starting a career. Then, during the Covid shut down, he dove back into art. “I started painting again and got accepted into an art gallery where I got to meet the Governor. I was published in a few magazines and even got commissioned to do a piece.”
His art camp idea got a jump start last year when Evans met local artist Aaron Kizer at the Barrels of heART fundraiser for United Way. When the two artists spoke next, Evans mentioned his idea to host an art camp to Kizer, who immediately said he’d support it by providing

“Once I knew Aaron Kizer was behind it, I really got hyped about it,” Evans admitted. “That’s when I decided to go big and just went nuts with it.”

In addition to Kizer Construction sponsoring the art supplies, Big Bang Comics donated comic books. Courtney Evans and Camille Armstrong will be capturing the magic through photography. Evan’s daughters, Sykiah and Imani, will also be volunteering to help. And the list of guest artists continues to grow. (See sidebar.)
Now Will had momentum, but he still needed a place to host the art camp. That piece of the puzzle fell into place when he met LJ Douglas, Family Resource Center director at Estes Elementary. Once LJ heard about the idea, the art camp found a home at Estes.
Thus the name, Estes Bulldog Art Camp.
“It’s been a great collaboration with LJ. He’s given 100% support and total freedom to dream anything and try anything and make it happen. The sky’s the limit with LJ,” Evans said.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace
Written by LIBBY JOHNSON Photos by JAMIE PLAINOne night in the fall of 2019, while most of Owensboro was fast asleep, Bruce Sheldon was working a swing shift at a local power plant and happened upon a website called “Sleep in Heavenly Peace.” Intrigued and inspired, Sheldon left work that morning eager to find out what it would take to become involved.
One night in the fall of 2019, while most of Owensboro was fast asleep, Bruce Sheldon was working a swing shift at a local power plant and happened upon a website called “Sleep in Heavenly Peace.” Intrigued and inspired, Sheldon left work that morning eager to find out what it would take to become involved.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a national non-profit 501(C)(3) with local chapters all over the United States. Its motto, “No kids sleep on the floor in our town” conveys the purpose of the organization: to build and distribute beds to children ages 3-18 who don’t have a bed in which to sleep. Research shows that a bed is a basic need for a child to be able to cope mentally, physically, and emotionally.
According to the website, two to three percent of children across America do not have a bed. As Sheldon would come to find out, locally that translates to a need for 1,200 to 1,800 beds. “After discovering the site, I learned that the closest chapter to us (in Owensboro) was in Mayfield,” Sheldon says.
The in-roads he made to starting a chapter here soon led him to Twin Falls, Idaho - the headquarters of Sleep in Heavenly Peace - for vetting and training. At training, Sheldon and Brian Burn, who accompanied him, learned it would take about $4000 to get a local chapter up and running. That was accomplished relatively quickly, and Sheldon and his crew began making beds in the
fall of 2020. However, their efforts were soon derailed by COVID-19 and subsequent shutdowns.
In the time since the pandemic, the Owensboro chapter has built and delivered about 600 beds. “Builds” (just what it sounds like - a one day workshop to build and assemble beds) are held on the second Saturday of each month at the Daviess County Fairgrounds. People or groups interested in helping should reach out to the chapter via its Facebook page before the date of the build. “We’ve had a lot of church groups and Scout troops,” Sheldon says, noting that individuals can come, too. “There’s something for everybody, and you don’t have to have any experience in using tools,” he says, “but if you are under 17, you should be accompanied by an adult.” There is also a need for donated items and funds to purchase materials. New bedding comes with each bed. “We always need new pillows, sheet sets, and comforters - all twin size,” he says.
Nicole Leach, whose day job is, rather fittingly, Supervisor of Community Engagement at Owensboro Health, serves as the
Delivery Manager for Sleep in Heavenly Peace. She does volunteer scheduling and coordinates the delivery of beds to families. “My husband and I had just moved back (to the area) and I saw someone shared it on Facebook, and there was going to be a build day,” she says. “I decided to go give it a try
and have been a regular volunteer ever since.” Leach said that before getting involved with the nonprofit, she didn’t realize “all the tentacles of a good night’s sleep” and how a bed and proper sleep is linked to social and academic growth. The success of Owensboro’s chapter has spread, and now there are chapters in Evansville and Bowling Green. Thanks to the hard work of volunteers like Sheldon, Leach, and others, our community has fewer children without a bed of their own. To find out more, check out the chapter’s website or Facebook page. You’ll rest well knowing you made a difference. OL
Caring for the Community
CARE NET OWENSBORO OFFERS HOPE IN TIMES OF NEED
Written by MARLYS MASON // Photos by JAMIE PLAINIn 2002, the vision for a Christianbased pregnancy center to serve those in crisis due to an unplanned pregnancy began to develop under the leadership of John Birkett and others. In 2005, affiliated with Care Net National, Care Net Owensboro began at 1735 Frederica Street. Within two years, they relocated to 922 Triplett Street.
A little over 10 years later, Care Net Owensboro expanded and opened in September 2020 at its current location, 425 E. 18th Street.
Care Net Owensboro operates as a medical clinic that offers essential services, including pregnancy tests, limited obstetrical ultrasound, Sexually Transmitted Infection(STI) testing and treatment.
Latricia Duckworth, the executive director at CNO since August 2023, said that these services are provided by licensed registered nurses and a registered diagnostic medical sonographer under the direction of CNO’s medical director and radiologists who volunteer their services.
Duckworth, who served in Madisonville’s center for 10 years and holds a bachelor’s degree, along with many years of experience in ministry and business, said that ultrasounds are available after consultation with the medical staff and are available to women who have not had an ultrasound with their primary physician.
“These services are offered at no cost to our clients and aim to address urgent questions such as ‘Am I really pregnant?’ ‘How far along am I?’ ‘Is this pregnancy viable?’ or ‘Do I have a STI?’” she said. “Options counseling is a core component of our approach, providing factual information about parenting, adoptions and abortion.”
Using a nonjudgemental and compassionate approach in a safe environment, Duckworth said that options are available for further discussion at CNO.
“For those who choose to carry their pregnancy, Care Net offers ongoing support through prenatal and parenting education,” she said. “Clients can attend weekly classes to prepare for the baby’s birth and receive support until the child reaches six months of age.”
Volunteer advocates and staff use this time to prioritize building and encouraging relationships, and participants receive gift bags with essentials at each visit.
“These items are diapers, wipes, and other baby supplies,” she said.
Participants who complete 18 educational classes can then choose a larger item from a list, including a
car seat or stroller.
A recent initiative at Care Net Owensboro involves launching a Fatherhood program.
“While Care Net has always involved fathers of the baby in the medical process and provided services to male STI clients, we are now focused on developing and implementing a more intentional plan to support potential fathers,” Duckworth said. “This will involve leveraging male staff, volunteers and a structured fatherhood curriculum.”
Funded by individual donors, churches, businesses and grants from the community, services are accessible for everyone; a majority of CNO’s clients are from Daviess, Ohio and McLean counties. The nonprofit remains steadfast in their mission
of compassionately serving every individual who seeks assistance through its services, resources and personnel, Duckworth said.
“Care Net Owensboro stands as a vital nonprofit in our community,” Duckworth said. “Its significance
lies not only in its consistent delivery of essential services, integrity and provision of free medical services education and guidance but equally in the dedication of its people.”

Following right on the heels of the Kentucky Derby each year in May, BBQ & Barrels (formerly known as the Owensboro International BBQ Festival) proves that a little competition makes for a good time … and world-class cooking.
To be held this year in downtown Owensboro on May 10-11, BBQ & Barrels is a 45-year-old Owensboro tradition. Visitors and natives alike have the opportunity to enjoy two Kentucky staples: barbeque and bourbon.
The festival features concerts, car shows, pageants, road races, a Mutton Eating Competition, church cooking teams, and the Backyard BBQ Cookoff.
The Backyard Cookoff is a crowd favorite, with a $1,500 cash prize for the team who tickles the judges’
tastebuds enough to be named Grand Champion. Categories include Beef, Chicken, Pork, and Best Booth, with free samples to be distributed to the public.
Todd Johnson, event organizer, said he first got involved with barbeque competitions while watching his father, Horse Johnson, cook with his team from Bellsouth–later on known as Telephone Pioneers.
“I grew up around it,” Johnson reflected. “I remember going down to the river as a kid and getting hooked. When I got older, I started competing in the Backyard Cookoff. One year our team won Grand Champion.”
Johnson, along with Kelly Ward, took over organizing the event around ten years ago.
“We adjusted the rules a little,” said Johnson. “We raised the entry fee to $100, so we are able to give out a large cash prize, rather than just a trophy. It just continues to grow; there used to be around 10 to 12 teams entered each year; now we have over 30.”
With mostly local teams entered, folks travel from Louisville, Evansville, and Illinois to compete.
A good time is usually had by all, and camaraderie among competitors is evident.
“Most teams come back year after year,” Johnson noted. “That’s what it’s all about, having fun.”
Gene Gauger, of the Ticklin’ Ribs & Rubbin’ Butts team, said he got his start about ten years ago when he and his brother built a smoker. That’s when he first got the itch for
Later on, at a pitch-in dinner, I met a guy from the Old Fashioned Butcher Shoppe in Newburgh, and he suggested taking a cooking class. My wife and I took a class, and since then we have got a call at every contest except one.”
One secret to the Ticklin’ Ribs team’s success is not going easy on the rub.
“We always cook baby back ribs, chicken thighs, and beef,” said Gauger. “We buy our seasonings from Steve’s House of Smoke in Terre Haute. I’ve got two favorite sauces, Sweet Baby Ray’s and Blues Hog. I may mix them up a bit depending on which meat I’m saucing.”
Jim Hines of the Rollin’
Smoke team first started cooking in the 1990s, and when he and his brother-in-law Anthony Wolford built a smoker out of a 300-gallon tank, they were ready for a whole new era of competing. With the addition of Todd Millay to their team, they’ve stepped up their game.
“We have been cooking for BBQ & Barrels for eleven years,” said Hines. “We’ve finished in front, and we’ve finished in back; we’ve never won Grand Champion, but one of our protegees has.”
For Hines and team, the secret is in the sauce.
“For pork, we use a vinegarbased dip,” said Hines. “Our favorite thing to cook up is deer meat, and we bring about 40-50 pounds each year. We cook it two weeks in advance, then freeze it and thaw it out on the cooker.”
“It’s a great time, and we have a nice set-up,” said Hines. “Our wives are an important part
of the team, and we have a lot of family and friends who stop by to socialize and help out if needed.”
Memories made throughout the years remain strong, and the passing of friend Jerry Crowe from pancreatic cancer in 2018 made an impact on Hines and other competitors.
“We have a picture of our friend Jerry on our banner,” said Hines. “It’s a tribute to him and shows that these teams don’t just compete with one another, they bond. Now we compete against Jerry’s boys each year, and they go to the same competitions we do.”
Joshua Taylor, of Big Daddy’s BBQ, has overcome nearly impossible odds after undergoing a heart and kidney transplant, enduring a medically-induced coma after cardiac arrest, and LVAD surgery … and still has his sights set on winning Grand Champion at BBQ & Barrels this year.
got the job done.
“My wife Jill, my brother-in-law Ronnie, and Steven Edge made it happen,” said Taylor. “We ended up placing third in chicken and second in pork.”
Besides being a tough competitor, Big Daddy’s BBQ also has its own line of products, which can be found in IGA stores in Owensboro, Hartford, and Morgantown.
“I knew that to set myself apart in competitions, I needed to develop my own sauce,” Taylor reflected. “I started making my own spice rubs in 2012. Big Daddy’s BBQ sauce is a unique blend of Kansas City style, Texas, and North Carolina flavor. Our sauce combines the tomato-based KC sauce with the vinegar flavor of Carolina barbeque with a bold, spicy Texas twist.”
Big Daddy’s sauce can also be found at Hillview Farms, and was used by Kim’s Diner during burger week, selling a whopping 15 cases. Manufactured by Louisville-based Bloemer’s Foods, Big Daddy’s sauce is headed for a Kentucky Proud listing with a new product launch this fall in Lexington. Taylor is also working on a deal with Kroger.
Backyard BBQ Cookoff 2024 will be a year to remember, giving teams the chance to show off their “skills and grills.”
“This year,” stated Joshua Taylor, with optimistic confidence. “Big Daddy’s is gonna take it all.” OL

SENIOR LIVING: STAYING CONNECTED IS VITAL FOR SENIOR ADULTS p. 78
HEALTH: OWENSBORO HEALTH EXPANDS ACCESS TO PRIMARY CARE p. 80
LIFESTYLE
Staying Connected is Vital for Senior Adults
Written by BECKY BARNHART , Executive Director, Senior Community CenterEvery May, senior centers and organizations that work with the elderly celebrate Older Americans Month (OAM), which is led nationally by the Administration for Community Living. The theme for 2024 OAM is “Powered by Connection,” to encourage and highlight the impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being, especially for senior adults.
As a Senior Center director,
I believe we should honor and celebrate our seniors every month, not just in May. But no one in Washington asked me!
Developing relationships and maintaining those connections plays a vital role in fighting social isolation and loneliness, which can lead to other health issues, as we age. That’s why it’s so important to have programs that help seniors stay connected.
Audubon Area Community Services (AACS) has its Senior
Companion Program, which partners senior volunteers with homebound elderly folks to assist them, while encouraging their independence and keeping them at home. AACS offers this program in Daviess, Hancock, Ohio, McLean, Henderson, Webster and Union counties. Contact AACS at (270) 683-1907 for more information.
Our “golden years” provide an exciting time to explore new interests without the burden of a 9-5 work schedule, meet new friends in different settings and enhance our mental and physical health through developing a new fulfilling lifestyle and staying connected.
Some of the most popular hobbies for seniors, which could also be described as the “Best Of” activities for seniors include gardening, reading, arts and crafts, volunteering, dancing, and bird watching, listening to music and travel.
Within our communities, there are a variety of places to participate in many of these events, such as at public libraries, senior centers/ facilities, churches/faith centers, community services organizations and nonprofits, many of whom are always looking for volunteers.
Volunteering is a “win-win” scenario for all parties as it provides additional help for the organization and a sense of fulfillment and social connection for the volunteer.
As the director of a local nonprofit organization, I’m a big fan of volunteers, retirees who are wanting to give back. The value of volunteers is simply invaluable as it allows us to provide additional services, events and activities that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to offer. Smaller nonprofits need
volunteers just to keep the doors open.
Travel is another way to meet new friends and be active and increase social connections for seniors. Local senior centers sponsor day and multi-day trips, as do local travel agents. Owensboro Health’s Healthpark offers Connections (formerly called Golden Partners) and hosts many trips throughout the year, for members and non-members alike. Go to owensborohealth.org/ travelwithconnections.
Each county in the seven-county Green River Area Development District (GRADD) has a senior center for its’ residents, with many counties offering satellite sites for folks who can’t get to the focal point. There are multiple congregate meal sites in each county, which is a great connection point for seniors. Not only does it offer an opportunity to meet new folks, but also enjoy a meal that you don’t have to cook at home. It also may open the door for more activities and events that help keep seniors connected, engaged and active. Please reach out to your local senior center for more information.
If travel is an issue for seniors, senior centers also offer transportation services to get
to medical appointments and shopping.
OLDER AMERICANS MONTH EVENTS
Throughout May, senior centers in all seven GRADD counties are celebrating Older Americans Month with a variety of activities. Please contact the local senior center for more information:

In Daviess County, HPC - Hospice
and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky is hosting the OAM event at the Senior Community Center with a “Senior Spring Picnic.” Calling it a “FUNdraiser” for the Senior Center, HPC is coordinating with other partner groups to offer an exciting day that includes games, entertainment and lunch. All proceeds from this event will be donated directly to the Senior Community Center. The event will be held on Thursday, May 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Senior Center, 1650 W. 2nd Street, Owensboro.
“We (at HPC) are passionate about cultivating opportunities for seniors to engage and interact with one another,” said Caleb Farkas, Business Development Manager for HPC. For more information about sponsoring this event, contact him at (270) 926-7595.
The mental, physical, and emotional health benefits of social connection contribute to a more positive, overall well-being for everyone. Staying connected is even more critical in this digital age where electronics and social media are often preferred to face-toface, personal contact. The latter is where we find more meaningful connection, in my opinion, which is important for all generations, but especially for seniors. OL
OWENSBORO HEALTH EXPANDS ACCESS TO PRIMARY CARE
Owensboro Health is proud to be expanding healthcare for our communities. This spring, we’re introducing a new practice location, additional providers and new care models.

A NEW FOCUS
KELSEY PEDLEY, APRN
ANDREW COLLINS, DO
Owensboro Health Family Medicine, located in the Breckenridge Medical Building, under the expert guidance of Dr. Stacey Fazenbaker, offers a unique approach to healthcare known as Functional Medicine. Dr. Fazenbaker describes Functional Medicine to her patients as “root cause medicine,” emphasizing a comprehensive perspective that delves deeper into the underlying causes of illnesses. This approach focuses on essential factors like nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management and relationships, tailoring recommendations to suit each individual’s needs.
Integrating Functional Medicine into a family practice has proven to be a rewarding experience for Dr. Fazenbaker, although it requires patients to be open to making lifestyle changes. “Functional Medicine is for people who are ready to take an in-depth approach to being healthier and feeling better,” she said.
QUALITY CARE FOR THE AGING
Owensboro Health Medical Group Family Medicine - Breckenridge was recently named an Age-Friendly practice. This means they are committed to providing the best care for older adults.
In the next 30 years, the US population of people aged 65+ is expected to double. It’s important that our healthcare system is prepared to meet their needs. “We are excited to continue to advance geriatric care in our region,” said Geriatrician Andrew Collins, DO. “This designation will ensure that our older adults will receive excellent geriatric-centered care.”
Age-Friendly Health Systems is an Institute for Healthcare Improvement initiative that helps healthcare providers do just that. It provides them with guidelines to ensure that older adults receive high-quality care.
Owensboro Health remains committed to providing excellent care to the communities we serve. Just like you, we’re growing, evolving and changing to get better every day. Learn more, visit OwensboroHealth.org. OL

TMARCH 7
he first of two March Rooster Boosters featured guest speaker Russell Hoyt, President and CEO of The Hoyt Foundation.
In 1977, the legacy of the Hoyt family began when Rick Hoyt asked his father, Dick, to run together in a charity race benefiting a local lacrosse player who had become paralyzed. Rick experienced difficulties at birth, causing brain damage leading to cerebral palsy. He could not walk, talk, dress, or feed himself and utilized a wheelchair. Dick, who was not trained in endurance running, pushed his son in his wheelchair for the 5-mile race and finished second to last. After this race, Rick told his father, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped.” Dick and Rick would eventually complete over 1,000 endurance events, including 72 marathons, 32 Boston Marathons, and six Ironman Triathlons before their deaths in 2021 and 2022. The Hoyt Foundation was founded in 1989 to build the individual character, self-confidence, and self-esteem of America’s young people with disabilities through inclusion in all facets of daily life; including in family and community activities, especially sports, at home, in schools, and in the workplace.
Russell Hoyt is the President & CEO of The Hoyt Foundation. Russ is the youngest son of Dick and Judy Hoyt and the younger brother of Rick and Rob Hoyt.
The program was sponsored by Wendell Foster, a staple of the Owensboro community for over 76 years. Spanning six city blocks and providing 65,000 services to children and adults each year, our mission is to empower people with disabilities to realize their dreams and potential. Services include on-site and community-based residential housing and supportive programs; physical, occupational, and speech therapy; assistive technology; a transportation program; day training; community programs; and more. With nearly 365 “Difference Makers” on their staff, Wendell Foster is proud to be one of the largest employers in the Daviess County area.
In 2023, Wendell Foster announced the need for a new Aquatic Therapy Center. Aquatic Therapy is an essential form of therapy for people with disabilities, and has many benefits, including pain relief and increased mobility. Our current therapy pool is nearly 40 years old and has several maintenance limitations that prevent crucial aquatic therapy appointments from taking place. The new Aquatic Therapy Center, located in the Latham Outpatient Therapy Facility, will be a state-of-the-art, sustainable space, providing aquatic therapy for years to come.
At Rooster Booster, Wendell Foster kicked off the Steps Division of the Wendell Foster Half Marathon. It was an honor to witness the first steps of the participants in the Steps Division as they walk the half marathon throughout the year.
The second of two March Rooster Boosters featured a Mayoral Forum featuring each of the Owensboro Mayoral Candidates for the upcoming Kentucky Primary Election on Tuesday, May 21. The panel was moderated by Owensboro Public Schools Public Information Officer Jared Revlett.
“A primary goal of our Chamber is to be a catalyst for economic growth. Civic engagement is a key component of strong and bustling communities,” said Candance Castlen Brake, President and CEO of the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce. “The May primary election will decide which two of the candidates will be on the ballot in November. The Mayor’s race is extremely important to the community’s future. While the Mayor is more of a figure head in the city manager form of government, the occupant of the office sets the tone for our community and can guide many important discussions,” said Castlen Brake.
The program was sponsored by Oddball Creative, an advertising agency that specializes in digital marketing, web design, and branding. Recognized by Clutch, The Telly Awards, and The American Association of Political Consultants, their precision-driven approach blends creativity with data insights, empowering clients to focus on core strengths while achieving exceptional growth.

She graduated from Breckenridge County High School in 1950.
She moved to Owensboro and started working for the General Electric company in 1951. She retired in 1990. She was a member of the Old Walnut Street Baptist where she worked and taught Sunday school in the children’s department. After the church burned, she and her husband moved their membership to Bellevue Baptist Church, most Wednesday nights were spent working in the kitchen.
She is a long-time member of the Western Kentucky Friendship Force. She has traveled to all 50 states, all 7 continents, and over 90 foreign countries.
She has been on mission trips to Niger, Mali, Balivia, Haiti, and Ukraine twice.
Upon returning from Niger, she, friends,
church members and a sister church helped the missionaries there start a “Goat Project.” These goats supplied a source of nutrition to many of the young children.
She is the founder of the Bellevue Quilt Ministry. The Ukraine mission trips included working in an orphanage. When she realized how bad the orphans needed help, she persuaded a group of women from Bellevue to make quilts for Ukrainian children which grew to be knows as the Bellevue Quilt Ministry. The ministry is still going strong and continues to this day under younger leadership.
Since 1994 she has volunteered every Wednesday morning at the Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.
In 2012, she became a regular at the Owensboro Regional Farmers Market. There she can be found selling her baked goods, her homemade jams and jellies, and blackberries that she grows in her backyard. She also helps her son with the garden. She is in charge of weeding and harvesting the green beans for the market, which up until the last years, she would not let anyone else help with.

A recap of the Greater Owensboro Chamber Day in Frankfort
Greater Owensboro showed out in Frankfort in February! Attendees to the Greater Owensboro Chamber Day in Frankfort had the opportunity to sit in on Legislative Sessions of both the House of Representatives and the Senate where our very own Chris Joslin opened up the session with the Star Spangled Banner played on the banjo!
Attendees also had the opportunity to meet with Kentucky Secretary of State, Michael Adams and Kentucky Auditor of Public Accounts, Allison Ball.
West Kentucky Night Reception, hosted by 25 Chambers across West Kentucky featured remarks from Governor Andy Beshear and Caucus Chairs Senator Robby Mills and Representative Chris Freeland.
Thanks to every person who joined us on the trip to Frankfort and devoted their day to making Greater Owensboro Greater!
EDUCATORS IN THE WORKPLACE
The Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce’s Educators in the Workplace program provides teachers with deeper exposure to the career and workplace opportunities available in our community through on-site visits and discussions. Teachers and faculty members from local middle schools, high schools, and post-secondary institutions meet local employers and learn about the day-to-day operations, expectations, and internship or career opportunities available for their students.
The program features four sessions that focus on a variety of professional fields: Manufacturing, IT and STEM, Healthcare, and Transportation/Logistics. These sessions provide a unique perspective outside the typical classroom setting to ultimately give their students a better understanding about workforce programs and opportunities available in the Greater Owensboro region.
The 2024 Manufacturing session took educators to Metalsa and Owensboro Community and Technical College for a firsthand view of the college’s Workforce Solutions programs GOFAME and GOCAREERS. In October, the cohort visited OMU and Southern Star for a glimpse of the professional application of IT/STEM pathway careers. For the session on Transportation and Logistics, participants toured UniFirst, the Owensboro Riverport Authority, and Kimberly-Clark and witnessed just how far Owensboro’s production and distribution reach is due to our geographic position on the Ohio River. The final session of the program year covered Healthcare, which included visits to RiverValley Behavioral Health at The Crowne and Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.
The tours provided by host employers allowed educators to learn about the industry, levels of proficiency required for employees, and any other topics employers wish to cover. Connecting high school, middle school and post-secondary educators with area business leaders builds a much-needed bridge between education and profession to help well-educated, welltrained, and employees to build a stronger workforce for tomorrow.

Shakshuka
Recipe and photos by JAMIE
PLAINShakshuka is a North African dish made with eggs poached in a spiced tomato and pepper sauce. It is typically served with crusty bread or pita, making it the perfect dish for a hearty and filling breakfast, brunch, or dinner.
One of the great things about Shakshuka is that it is incredibly versatile. You can add a variety of vegetables such as onions, bell peppers, and zucchini to the sauce, making it a great way to use up any leftover veggies you have in your fridge. You can also customize the level of spice to suit your taste preferences, making it a great dish for those who like a little heat in their food. Use our recipe as a base but make sure to add all your favorites and make it your own!
INGREDIENTS:
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 onion, chopped
2 red bell pepper, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tsp paprika
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
6 large eggs
1 28oz. Can whole peeled tomatoes
Salt/pepper to taste
Fresh herbs for garnish
Crusty bread/pita bread
Notes: You can also add any other chopped vegetables, and also adjust the spice level to your own tastes. This recipe used whole canned tomatoes, but you can also use diced tomatoes or fresh tomatoes (just chop and press them down into a sauce). The number of eggs will depend on the size of your pan.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and bell pepper (and other optional veggies) and cook until softened, then add garlic and cook until fragrant.
2. Stir in all the spices until incorporated. Then Pour in tomatoes and if you are not using pre-diced tomatoes, press the tomatoes into the pan until the squish into a chunky sauce.
3. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for about 15 minutes (until sauce thickens).
Use a spoon to create small wells in the mixture, then crack eggs into the wells. Cover the skillet and cook 5-7 minutes, or until the eggs are cooked to your liking.
4. Remove from heat and garnish with fresh herbs. Use crusty bread or pita bread for dipping. Enjoy! OL

Bringing a Taste of Hawaii to Owensboro
Written by MARLYS MASON Photos by JAMIE PLAINWith an opening that met the hype of the Owensboro dining-out crowd, Fire Bowl owner Janet Gompers has not had a moment to breathe – and she sees it as a blessing.
Originally from Micronesia and growing up in Hawaii, Gompers said most of her life has been in Owensboro. Last year, however, Gompers returned to Hawaii because her mother was diagnosed with cancer.
“I went home to take care of her; I thought she wasn’t going to make it,” she said.
While in Hawaii, Gompers’ mother shared her regrets, and when the cancer treatments were successful, Gompers returned to Owensboro thinking of what her mother had shared.
Working in the restaurant business for 20 years, Gompers thought of two things she wanted –to spend time with her grandchildren and to own a restaurant.
Around that time, one of their grandchildren asked for a hibachi birthday party with a chef hat and grill in the backyard. Her husband, Charlie Joel, is a hibachi chef and their daughter-in-law made a
TikTok video of the beautiful night.
“Suddenly she was asking if we could do it for others,” she said. “We thought ‘Could we quit and do that?’ and the answer was ‘Yes!’”
After a couple of private hibachi parties, one as large as 100, they found their groove with plans to expand to a takeout place for space and orders. Using their retirement as an investment, they started looking
for space.
Gompers said that in Hawaii, kitchen space is often rented because food trucks are so popular, but they could not find this option in Owensboro. Still, they found the space in Halifax Square that housed El Tucan would soon be available, and since they were going to be a “grab-n-go” place, they thought it would work for a year until they
could expand the kitchen. Private hibachi parties would continue, even bringing in two grills and chefs for rental, takeout hibachi and also making Hawaiian poke bowls, something that Gompers missed from her homeland.
“We would have four chefs in the kitchen and do deliveries and catering to go,” she said. “Six tables inside for those who wanted to wait.”
The chefs were curious about the poke bowl assembly – the contents of sushi in a bowl, and Gompers kept telling them not to worry – that people would come for hibachi first. But she wanted to add the bowls to the menu because they are part of her culture and “really plain but beautiful.”
They sent out invitations for a soft opening but there was nothing soft about it.
“I don’t know how this happened,” she said. “We knew we were going to be busy, but we didn’t have servers – it was going to be grab-n-go. We would keep two chefs onsite and two would do the private bookings.”
Within opening week, Facebook posts were made about their need for servers and asking people to be patient. And Owensboro reacted with encouragement and positivity.
“I was struggling while looking for servers, but it’s like God was on my side,” she said.
Some servers from her past job came in to volunteer and one person came in for an order and was hired.
“They are the type of servers I’ve always wanted; they’re just awesome,” she said. “My grandmother always talked about unanswered prayers.”
The poke bowls are a hit, and the kitchen expansion might happen sooner than they thought as more space for the ingredients is needed already.
“I was completely wrong in a really good way,” she said.
The Owensboro Food Critic gave a positive review on Facebook that Gompers’ mother jokingly asked if she had paid him to do.
“I had never met him before, but it was so nice,” she said. “I
feel like all of this was meant to happen.”
Gompers’ happiness for the success can be felt on Sundays, the day of the week she never had off. She has worked in the restaurant business since she was 16 and worked every Mother’s Day. Fire Bowl is closed on Sundays.
“I have control of when I see my family,” she said. “We love and enjoy time with family so much, and it is such a luxury.”
The private hibachi parties are on hold until more chefs are hired, and Gompers said those clients understand even though she feels like she is turning her back on them because of the atmosphere and experience of those parties.
“People thank us for opening this,” she said. “I think it is because I love it so much.”
She said they do not plan to expand.
“It’s not our vision, but it never was our vision,” she said. “It’s just all been by accident.”
Fire Bowl is located at 3600 Frederica Street. OL
100 Years of the Best
Written by LORA WIMSATTOnce again, it is time to celebrate the “Best Of” everything Owensboro-Daviess County has to offer! Whether it’s your favorite service provider, clothing, education institution, foods in any of a zillion categories, or anything else, it’s always fun to see how your picks match up with the selections of your neighbors.
There was no such thing as the convenience of online voting 100 years ago. Businesses had to depend on word of mouth and their own reputations to succeed. But then, as now, many of them utilized the power of advertising to let our community know about the products and services they offered.
A quick search of 1924 Owensboro newspapers using key phrases such as “we have the best” and “best in town” yielded numerous ads promoting local businesses. Let’s take a look at what these proud proprietors had to say about their wares a century ago!
Star Cash Groceries, located at the corner of Third and Allen streets, promised “high quality – low prices” … as well as something that is rarely, if ever, advertised in these modern times: “We also have the best of Home Killed Meats.”
The official definition of that phrase is to describe “meat that is processed on a farm,” meaning “the animals are slaughtered and butchered on the farm itself, minimizing the stress the animals may experience during transport and in the abattoir,” which is a fancy word for slaughterhouse.
Yikes. An ad like this in 2024 would probably be considered too much information, so we’ll just move along to a more genteel area of grocery shopping.
Model Bakery, 818 E. Fourth St., was proud to bake and distribute “The Bread for Every Digestion, for sale by all grocers.” Shoppers were assured that “no matter what your health is,” Model’s Quality Bread was indeed the best Bread in town. “Its uniformly fine texture – its lightness – its tastiness – makes it the logical Bread for the whole family, from Baby to Grandpa.”
Perhaps shoppers did not want to buy or prepare their own meat and bread. In that case, they could visit Joe’s Place at 216 Frederica St., to enjoy “meals cooked by the best cook in town, Jim Lewis.”
If you needed transportation to get around, Short Bros. Motor Company Incorporated – conveniently located at 216 Allen St. – touted themselves as “the best place in town to do your automotive shopping.” Customers
could choose from a 1918 Baby Grand Chevrolet Touring car, advertised as “well worth the money” at $175, or upgrade to a 1922 Ford Coupe “with front bumper, five good tires and a good heater.” This was “one of the best kept Fords in town,” available now for the bargain price of $325. These and other cars could be purchased by putting down onethird in cash with the balance in monthly payments.
For those who didn’t own their own vehicle, or simply needed something more substantial for heavy hauling, customers could call upon Eck Miller Transfer Co. “You Call – We Haul,” was their promise. “Anybody can handle small jobs,” their ad scoffed. “Our specialty is heavy and careful work because we own the largest and best equipment in town.” Not only that: “We have the biggest Owensboro Wagon ever built!”
Not interested in vehicles? Prefer to walk? Well, look no further than the Birk-Baker Shoe Co. “Our repair
department, like our shoes, is the best in town,” their ad asserted. “We use one grade material – The Best.”
Or, if you were interested in going into the shoe business for yourself, one could consider an advertisement placed in the Dec. 14, 1924, edition of the Owensboro Messenger, offering a “Shoe Shop for Sale, equipped with the best modern machinery, paying business, works two men all the time. Bargain if taken at once. Best stand in town.” The owner of this unnamed business at 1023 E. Fourth St. was selling because of bad health.
Perhaps he could have taken the advice described in an ad that proclaimed that even when “the best doctors in the United States” could not help – “Some said one thing and some another was ailing me, and all wanted to cut me open” – but “Mayr’s Wonderful Remedy saved me, so now I eat cabbage, sausage and anything I want to. Nothing hurts me.”
Well, some of these services and products may very well have been the very best of their time and others perhaps not so much, but 100 years later, we can all truly enjoy the very BEST of what OwensboroDaviess County has to offer. OL
