from the editor This Mother’s Day is going to be a little different for me, my first as a single mom. I have always told you all that we are in this parenting thing together, and boy, did I mean it. More so now than ever.

dad is still just as much a part of their lives, for which I am thankful. But life is different now. With my role as wife gone, my role as mom is that much more important and crazy. I have learned to survive on my own – taking care of a broken air conditioner in my van, a leaking refrigerator, the yard work, you name it. The extra stress has made me value my time with my kids more. I am taking time away from my never-ending to-do list and playing tag, reading one more book, pushing them on their swing set, and just showing them the extra love they deserve. But I have also learned that I can’t do it all. I am leaning on a lot of people to help me. You know that saying, “It takes a village…” Y’all, my village is like a small city. And it is mighty. My village is the reason I am on the other side of my storm, able to write about it to you. So when I was planning out this issue of Owensboro Parent, I started thinking about my story and how I know there are other parents out there facing their own storms. Owensboro Parent may not be a part of their village, but we thought we could at least recognize them for being SUPER Moms & Dads. We took nominations through Facebook, asking our friends to nominate a SUPER mom or dad they knew – a friend, neighbor, family member, their own mom or dad or even their children. We were overwhelmed with nominations. The testimonies we read were so moving, they each deserved to be recognized. But our staff narrowed it down to the Top 5 Moms & Dads, which you can read all about on page 10. With both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day quickly approaching, we at Owensboro Parent hope you have a wonderful time with your kids, being honored for your most important role.

other’s Day and Father’s Day … Special occasions honoring the two special people whose love and pride and support have embraced you throughout your life, and yet we celebrate their occasions in such very different ways. Mother’s Day – We take Mom out to eat at her favorite restaurant so she doesn’t have to cook. (Not that a lot of moms are still cooking these days, but still.) Everyone shows up and the whole family sits around the table laughing and talking, and the bill is discreetly picked up at the end. And as you prepare to go your separate ways in the parking lot, everyone hugs and Mom cries. Father’s Day – Dad stands at the grill and flips burgers as grandkids and dogs chase one another around his legs. Everyone shows up again, but while they’re there, they ask

Dad if he can look under the hood of the car to figure out what’s making that funny sound. And by the way, Dad bought the ground beef for the burgers. When it’s over, you toss a casual wave over your shoulder and Dad sort of flaps a hand back in your direction as he is busy scraping grease from the rack on the grill. Mother’s Day – Mom is showered with gifts of flowers and candy – her favorite kinds of both. There is a card, decorated with pastel blossoms and engraved with sentimental messages of appreciation for a mother’s love, her sacrifices and support, signed with a heartfelt “I love you, Mom” and lots of X’s and O’s. And Mom cries and puts the card up on the mantel and you know it will stay there for a month, and then will go into the dresser drawer where she keeps “special things,” perhaps even into the bundle of cards and letters tied with a faded satin ribbon.

www.OwensboroParent.com

Father’s Day – Another tie, or a tool if he’s lucky, even though it’s probably something he already has, but nobody is allowed to touch The Tool Box so who really knows. Anyway, the guy at the hardware store said Dad would love it so that’s good enough for you. If there is a card – the odds are not good – it’s got some kind of cartoon on the front and a funny verse inside, and there is a scrawled signature that implies it was signed while driving from the drug store where the card was just bought, on the way to the cookout where Dad is already heating up the coals. Dad says “thanks” and sets the gift aside, either to go into the closet never to be seen again, or driven back to the hardware store and exchanged for something he really needs. He scans the card – if he even gets one – so quickly, you’re not even sure he read it, but then again, the burgers are sizzling and he needs to check on the propane level. Mother’s Day – The whole family dresses up and goes to church, lining up beside Mom in the pew like chicks crowding next to a proud mother hen. There is a corsage, maybe two, and although you don’t remember what the preacher said, you’ll never forget the feeling that swelled up in your heart when you caught a glimpse of your mother slipping a handkerchief from her purse to dab

www.OwensboroParent.com

tears from her eyes, and seeing her cry with joy makes you want to cry too. Father’s Day – Maybe you go, maybe you don’t, and khakis are fine, right? Or maybe even jeans. Dad stares straight ahead during the sermon and you snicker and trade elbow jabs with your siblings just like you did when you were kids, whispering that Dad is just trying not to fall asleep and is probably thinking about whether he needs to pick up another bag of charcoal on the way home from church. And later, when you’re standing around the backyard eating your second hamburger, your brother is telling your sister about this and you’re all laughing so hard that you cry. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day – Two special occasions celebrating two special people, both so different and honored in such different ways, and yet when the years go by and they are only memories, you find yourself commemorating both days the very same way: You cry.

In the almost six years of magazines, Owensboro Parent has recognized a lot of kids. This issue, in honor of Mother's Day and Father's Day, we decided it was time to acknowledge Mom and Dad. We took to Facebook, asking our loyal readers to nominate the SUPER Mom and Dad in their lives -- a friend, a neighbor, a coworker, their own mom or dad or even their children. We received an overwhelming amount of nominations, each Mom and Dad with an amazing story. It was tough, but the Owensboro Parent staff narrowed it down to these Top 5 SUPER Moms and Dads. Thank you to those that nominated and thank you to the nominees -- you're all SUPER in our book! Thanks also to the sponsors listed below who donated items to the prize packages!

AnjiMother Bittel Edge of four “Anji has to be the Super-ist Mom in Owensboro. The challenges she faces in her daily life far exceed those that most women face in a lifetime. Her son, Jonah Edge, was born with a congenital heart defect and to this date has had 50 surgeries of various kinds, including four open-heart surgeries. For the next two weeks he is wearing a heart monitor to try to determine why his heart isn't functioning like it should. He also was born with Down syndrome and she struggles with balancing his need for care along with caring for her other three children. She is a single mom and has to face these struggles alone since her husband, Larry Edge, passed away from cancer almost five years ago. Anji quit her job to care for Larry and then to care for her mother with breast cancer, and to care for Jonah’s always growing list of medical conditions.”

“The person that I find super in my life is my daddy. I find my daddy super because he has taught me how to farm, hunt and live life to the fullest. When I count my blessings I start with him! We have a very special bond... we both love to hunt and have a passion for the land, I am always by my daddy's side! My dad is a 4th generation farmer and works 100+ hours every week; yet no matter how tired he is when he comes home, he still makes time to take me hunting, play with my two brothers and show my mom how much he loves her. My dad is a real family man, every night he prays with us, and gives us 'goodnights' and 'I love you's.' My dad is the reason for who I am. He has always taught me to never worry about what anyone says or thinks about me. Even though I am just a 13-year-old girl, my daddy has taught me by example to not accept anything from a man less than what he is. Whoever I marry will have a hard time trying to fill my daddy's shoes. My daddy does everything because of my mom, my two brothers and myself. I thank God every day for blessing me with such an amazing and hardworking dad. There is no telling who I would be without him! I am a good person because of a good man, my daddy!”

Aaron Wilson father of two “I want to nominate my husband Aaron Wilson for SUPER PARENT! I honestly can't think of a man more deserving of this honor. He works hard for our family which has allowed me to stay at home with our two beautiful children – Laney, age 3 and Jett, 18 months. When he's not working, he's actively engaged with our family and children. Whether it be camping, little daily surprises, fishing, going to the museum, riding four wheelers, playing on the playground, or daddy-daughter dates, you won't see him on the sidelines, but rather loving our children and making the most of every day. I love him with all my heart and think he is the best Godly role model for our children! In my eyes he's a SUPER PARENT every day!”

Mother’s Day Date Night

Traditionally, on Mother’s Day, the children spend time with their mother, but especially if those kids are quite young, the best thing a mother might get for Mother’s Day is a bit of time away! Therefore, listen up dads! This year, honor the mother of your children with a night out that is just about her! Get dressed up, hire a babysitter, and take her to one of these local Owensboro restaurants that will remind her that she is more than a mom.

Bethany Medkiff mother of three “I would like to nominate my sister for The Super Parent contest. Her name is Bethany Medkiff. She is 27 years old and a single mother of three. Today marks the anniversary of her son's passing; his name is Ryder Lee. It was five years ago and she has overcome so much loss and hardship. She continues to raise her two beautiful daughters Addison, 4 years old, and Aryia, 10 months old, to the absolute best of her ability. Bethany goes above and beyond for her children and works tirelessly to provide the best life for them that she can. Truth be told, she has very little help with her girls. She also has helped co-parent and help raise two other children that she loves as her very own. She has made these two beautiful children part of her life and cares for them too. She is a CNA at Owensboro Health and works 12-hour shifts 3-4 nights a week. Her selflessness to help others has given her so much strength and has made her a better person and even better mother. She still manages to juggle work and being a tremendous mother. I am reminded by her to never take moments with my children for

Pleasantly casual and intimate dining atmosphere. Beautiful inside and out. Any of these fine eateries would be a special treat for a kid’s-meal-weary mother. Afterwards you might take advantage of the spring weather on the riverfront. Downtown, as the evenings warm up, you are sure to find live music and a romantic backdrop for quiet conversation. Or, for a real treat, offer to take her to Target for some kidsfree shopping! It might sound awfully common to go to a retail store on date night, but a relaxed trip to the store can do wonders for a woman’s psyche. Make it romantic; don’t forget to hold her hand as you browse the aisles together! A sweet date with her favorite man might be just the thing to rejuvenate and honor a hard-working mom because a happy mom makes for a happy family!

“Like a Second Mom to me” { by: katie albers } Many of us have a special mentor in our lives, that person that we introduce as “like-a-Mom-to-me” or “my second Dad.” This person is often an older neighbor or co-worker or maybe the real parent of one of our close friends. These people provide great advice and support just as a true parent might. So, wouldn’t it be nice to honor them on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day as well? Send a hand-written Thank You card expressing how much he or she means to you. Need some ideas for what to say? Try one of these phrases.

For Second Moms

"Thank you for being my Mom away from home." "Aunt: like a mom, only way cooler!" "You’re like a second mom to me, and you hold first place in my heart!" "Thank you for loving me like your own."

For Second Dads

"If you were really my dad, I would really be proud." "Uncle: like a dad, only way more fun!" "I may not be your kid, but thank you for treating me like part of the family." "Thank you for all your advice."

Other gift ideas that would show you care: Take him or her out for a Mother’s Day or Father’s Day dinner.

Plant a tree or flowers in his or her yard. Present a gift that matches his or her hobbies. If you knew this person when you were a kid, give them a framed photo of yourself as a kid to include with their other family photos. In a card, recount a favorite memory or inside joke that the two of you share. Whichever way you decide to honor these dear friends, do not miss the opportunity to tell someone how much they mean to you. A bit of joy spilled is never wasted!

Chad Sanders father of two

“My dad truly is a super dad. He's my number one fan, and I know that he always has my back no matter what. He wants nothing less than the best for my little sister and me. When I was a baby, he would keep me secure and facing him in a baby carrier as he would mow the lawn, and he would work the night shift at the hospital so that he could watch me during the day while my mom worked. Needless to say, he lost a lot of sleep because of me, but that only shows his dedication towards his family. He has always done whatever it takes to give me and my sister the best childhood that we could possibly have, and he has instilled a work ethic within me that will serve me for years to come. It is because of him that I have a strong motivation to excel in my academics, and I owe my sense of responsibility, diligence, and perseverance to him. He's got the greatest sense of humor, and he is always willing to help our neighbors and friends, whether it is with yard work or a personal issue. He is not only an amazing husband and father but also an incredible servant of the community. He works at the Immediate Care Center as a family nurse practitioner. He interacts with the Owensboro community on a very personal level, and he helps many people each and every day. He picks up extra days quite often in order to make extra money to support our family, and if it wasn't for him, my family wouldn't be able to travel as much as we do. Traveling is very important to my family, and my sister and I have gotten to experience so much already; we've been across the country and even across the globe. I truly feel that we have more of a strengthened appreciation for diversity and an open mind than most of our peers. I wouldn't trade my dad for the world, and even if he is not chosen to be featured in the Owensboro Parent magazine, I know that he is the most super dad that a girl could ask for.

Lindsey Barnett mother of three “I saw your post on Facebook for Super Moms and Dads, and would like to tell you about how awesome of a super mom my wife is to our family! What makes my wife Lindsey Barnett SUPER?! Let's see… She takes care of our three daughters Kynsleigh, Kambreigh, (twin 5 year olds) and Larkynn our 6 month old, all while running her own embroidery and appliqué business, "Little Bit & Little Bit More Boutique," out of our home. She's going from the time her feet hit the floor at 6am until getting the baby to bed around 9:30pm. We have been married for nine years as of April 19th. She's been through a lot of infertility issues. We did IVF and got pregnant with the twin girls and had two failed embryo transfers before getting pregnant with Larkynn. She took what seems like millions of Progesterone shots all by herself, everyday, for 15 weeks and Heparin shots twice a day for 36-37 weeks! All with me working shift work at Aleris in Lewisport, averaging 60 hours a week. We often joke that she's pretty much a single mom most of the time. I may work 60 hours, but it does not even come close to the amount of time and energy she uses doing what she does day in and day out! She's the rock of our family and true hero to me!”

Matt Hawkins father of two “Matt Hawkins has to be the best daddy I have ever come across! He works long days and leaves before any of us are up in the morning but when he gets home, he does whatever his girls want/ask him to do, with absolutely no complaints. He spends his weekends taking them fishing, teaching them to ride a bike, painting, taking them to Home Depot or Lowe's for the build workshop, you name it. It’s like he was born to be a daddy and he excels at it every single day. Not sure what I would do without him as my partner on this crazy ride of parenthood.”

Shelly Tyler mother of two “I saw the contest for Super Moms and Dads on Facebook and my clinic director, Shelly Tyler, automatically came to mind. I work for a physical therapy company in Owensboro called Rehabilitation & Performance Institute where Shelly is the Vice President and Clinic Manager. She was born and raised in Owensboro, and this is where she has chosen to bring up her family as well. The joke around our clinic is that Shelly is Superwoman. She spends her days as a physical therapist who has several certifications, including being a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy (one of nine in the entire state of Kentucky). She also teaches within the PT program at the University of Evansville, and volunteers two hours of her weekday to a free stretch class for working people in downtown Owensboro. In the evenings, she loves spending time with her two boys, Grayson and Paxton, and involving them in her recreational activities. One evening per week, she teaches a yoga-pilates class at the clinic, and did I mention she is part of a triathlon training group? Even though Shelly has all of this going on, she and her husband have decided to adopt a child from South Korea and are in the process of pairing with a program to benefit a widow while funding part of the adoption. We do not know how she juggles it all, but we do know that Shelly puts her family before everything else and somehow keeps it together! She is more than deserving of the title "Super Mom!"

“I would love to nominate my husband, Larry Freels, as the best father in the world. He is such a hard worker, often coming home tired from his 24-hour shift at the Owensboro Fire Department. However, he still is ready to hug the kids, ask about their day, and help me get them ready for school. He is a great example to our children. Our kids still talk about watching him help a woman whose car had stopped make it off the road. He is ready to lend a helping hand to others – especially me. I come home to dishes

spend the day doing it with him. Some dad’s love riding bikes, some dad’s love watching NASCAR, some dad’s love building model trains. Whatever it is, dedicate Father’s Day to letting him shine through his interests. Ask his advice and let Dad teach you something new. Rather than taking over a special project for Dad, ask him to help you with one of yours. Everyone feels good when they feel like they are needed and appreciated. Just don’t forget to follow up his help with a genuine “Thank you!” And if the dad that needs to be honored in your family is new to the job, you might consider a peaceful Father’s Day afternoon nap with no interruptions as the perfect gift! However you decide to celebrate Father’s Day this year, do not let the opportunity pass to let him know how much he is loved and how important his role is to your family. Being a good dad is a tough job and a man up to the challenge is a precious gift!

Debbie McCrady mother of two “My mom is the most incredible woman I've ever known! I remember my childhood filled with love, attention, and fun. She stayed home with us when we were younger and volunteered at my school constantly. My brother and I were involved in all kinds of things, and we were met with nothing but encouragement. When I made some bad choices in my late teens, my mom did the best thing she could have done - let me make my own mistakes. She taught me right from wrong, but she also let me learn lessons on my own. When I tried to correct my mistakes, she welcomed me back with open arms and an open heart and fully supported me in anything I needed. Seeing my mom become a grandma has been such an amazing thing. The woman that made me who I am, is now also shaping my kids. She keeps all three of my babies, plus my niece, without batting an eye. She takes on so much and is so giving to everyone around her without asking for a single thing in return. My kids know her home just as I did - filled with fun, laughter, and unconditional love. I am so thankful for my mom and all she's done and continues to do if anyone deserves the title of Super Mom, it's definitely her! PHOTO BY TAYLOR WEST

Attention tech-people, create an app where she can snap a pic of her pantry and fridge, and BOOM, a recipe that uses those ingredients is sent right to her. On my own, I could never create a meal out of Cheerios, mandarin oranges, green beans, and Italian dressing; however, this fairylike app would change my life!

A universal remote currently sits on my side table, but if the

Think of all the buttons on a remote and how moms could use them for their own benefit. The Skip Button would be perfect for those looooooong car trips where everyone (even mom) is whining.

idea one step further, dry dish soap would be brilliant. Sprinkle some powder in your kitchen sink, and voila, moms could have the freedom to walk away without guilt.

Until a wise inventor stumbles upon this article and decides to

generate my ideas (and be on Shark Tank to make her millions), I have a 100% sure bet of something your mommy will love on Mother’s Day. Sit her down, look her in the eye and tell her that you are truly thankful for her. Let her know you appreciate all she does for you and would never want anyone to take her place. Those words will be more meaningful than any purchased item ever created. Save the foot spa for dad on Father’s Day – he can use it to clean his tools.

insight from an

ordinary dad Taking a break (Why vacation is a good thing)

I’m horrible at remembering who gave us gifts. But someone

recently gave us this little countdown calendar we keep on our kitchen counter. It came with little, numbered blocks that can be arranged like a countdown from 99 to zero and the blocks sit above these little chalkboards listing special occasions like “vacation,” “Christmas,” “birthday.” The set also comes with a blank slate and chalk so we can create our own celebrations.

Since countdowns are big in our family, that thing is a hit! Our

youngest is the self-appointed keeper of the countdown calendar and he updates it every morning at breakfast. There was no St. Patrick’s Day chalkboard thingy, so my oldest drew a shamrock on the blank one. Before that, it was Lincoln’s stovepipe hat for Presidents Day and a hand drawn heart for Valentine’s Day. It’s amazing how many things you can find to celebrate.

But vacation is the best!

This spring break we spent the week at my in-laws’ lake house

at Lake Barkley. The best thing about going to the lake is there’s

no internet. So we disconnect for the week. On top of that, we don’t take devices with us, which forces us to, you know, look at each other and have actual conversations and play family games instead of zoning out on devices. We did allow the boys to each pick out some movies from the library because that’s something we could enjoy together instead of one kid on the iPad in this corner and the other on the computer over there or whatever. And you know what? They didn’t even complain too much about disconnecting for a week. It forced them to be creative and come up with their own entertainment. Like “mountain climbing” on the enormous root ball of an overturned tree. Or finding rocks and shining them up like gems. I also took them fishing and we played at the city park a few times. There was a scraped nose, and a bruised knee, but those only turned into memories and adventurous stories to tell at dinner. Personally, my favorite memory of the week was re-stringing my grandad’s fishing poles with my oldest boy on the front porch. He woke me up at 6am to go fishing, which took me back to those days when I was his age and my grandad used to wake me up early

www.OwensboroParent.com

to go fishing in the summertime. It was a full-circle kind of memory. The only problem with fishing at 6am is that we hadn’t bought bait yet, but there was an easy solution to that: digging our own worms. Like life, a good vacation is never perfect. There were some timeouts given for tussles here and there. And I may have lost my cool a time or two. As I’m sure you’ve experienced yourself, unexpected circumstances came up during our vacation like they always do in regular life. But in the end, the things we remember Monday morning back at school or work are not the things that didn’t work out right in the moment; they’re the things that really count. What will our boys remember from the week? Hopefully spending hours playing together on the dirt pile, dreaming of being treasure hunters – not the extra long time it took to get them clean that night or the permanently stained brown socks. Hopefully they’ll remember spending time together on the dock fishing – not the fact that we didn’t get a single bite and it only lasted 30 minutes before they got bored. From my perspective, I will remember the scrapbookworthy picture I captured in my mind of both boys with their fishing poles in the water with the sun glistening on the lake, a breeze on our faces, and geese in the sky overhead. Those little spontaneous moments are the best part of

www.OwensboroParent.com

vacations. They are the memories that last. And that’s just as true whether it's a “staycation” like we took this time or a lavishly expensive trip like we’ve taken other times. It’s laughter during a family board game that seldom happens on a school night. It’s staying up late. It’s doing whatever we want because we have nowhere to be. Or sleeping in. Or waking up early and making a donut run. It’s the moments that seem so insignificant until you look back on them, smile all over again, and restart the countdown until the next vacation. Those priceless moments are the value of getting away, breaking the routine, and unplugging to make new memories together.

At the time of this writing, our countdown calendar has

already been reset to Easter. Next will be a cousin’s birthday party. Then a campout. Then the last day of school. And the countdown to making more priceless memories continues.

Simple Summer FRUIT POPS { by: jamie alexander }

These tasty popsicles are the perfect way to cool down this summer! Not only are they an easy healthy snack, they're completely customizable for the pickiest of eaters. All you need is a popsicle mold, sticks, your favorite fresh fruit, and a liquid to hold it all together! 1.) Start by cutting up your favorite fruit. Juicier fruit (like berries) typically work best for an icy pop! 2.) Fill your popsicle molds with your chopped fruit. Fill them up as much as possible for the prettiest pops. 3.) Pour your favorite liquid into the mold to hold your pop together. 4.) Use your mold to guide your popsicle sticks into place, before placing the filled mold into the freezer. 5.) Freeze overnight. More Tips: To easily release your popsicles from the mold, try running the mold under hot water for about ten seconds. Some great fruit options are: • Mixed berries • Peaches • Watermelon • Mandarin oranges • Kiwis • Pineapple • Grapes Some great liquid options are: • Apple juice • Orange Juice • Lemonade/Pink Lemonade • Limeade (juice) • Coconut water (pictured) • Yogurt (for a breakfast pop try sprinkling granola at the base of the pop before freezing!) Hit the spray parks around town.

Enjoy a family picnic on the Riverwalk downtown.

Make a slip n' slide in your yard.

Check out Smothers Park, Legion Park, Yellow Creek Park, or Panther Creek Park.

2 Make a scavenger hunt. Use things you can find in the park or your backyard, something for each letter A to Z, or themed, like different types of leaves or flowers.

Pack your own or grab a pizza to go at Fetta or burgers and shakes from Bee Bops.

7 Have the most epic water balloon fight. You can buy a water balloon filler that will fill 100 balloon in 60 seconds for less than $10 at Walmart!

3 Visit the library. Print out a list of children's books that have won Caldecott Medals. Visit the library throughout the summer and try to read as many as you can.

4 Take a family bike ride on the Greenbelt. You can even make a stop for ice cream at Dairy Queen on Hwy 231.

5 Set up a lemonade stand in your neighborhood. Use the proceeds for another summer adventure or encourage your child to donate the money to a local charity.

An old tarp and a water hose is all you need!

12 Bounce it out! Try out the U-Bounce open bounce nights when it's just too hot to play outside.

13 Forget dinner.

8

Set up an ice cream buffet instead!

Hit the Drive-in. Grab blankets, snacks and an old radio and head across the river to the Holiday Drive-In.

9

14 Volunteer at Daviess County Animal Shelter or Humane Society. Call ahead of time and see if they are low on any supplies.

Plant a garden. Take advantage of the free seeds from Daviess County Public Library and help your kids create their own flower or vegetable garden.

10 Feed the ducks. Save stale bread and take it to Diamond Lake to feed the ducks and fish.

15 Visit Daviess County Fish & Game. Paddle boats and kayaks are available to members. And remember the red, white and blue rocket slide from Ben Hawes? It was relocated to the DCFG farm last year!

2017 International Bar-B-Q festival May 12th & 13th, 2017 | Downtown Owensboro It’s time once again for the International Bar-B-Q Festival. This year, several considerations are being made to accommodate major construction projects going on downtown. Owensboro Parent spoke with festival organizers to offer this overview for families to enjoy this year’s festival.

CARNIVAL

One of the regular spots for the carnival is now a construction zone for the future International Bluegrass Center. Therefore, the children's carnival area will now be on Second Street near the blue bridge. The larger rides for older kids over will be moved down Second Street towards Triplett Street. There will be vendors and face painting in both areas to ensure easy access for different age groups.

FIRST BAPTIST FAMILY PAVILION

The First Baptist “Family Pavilion” will take a year off due to their construction project, but organizers say First Baptist plans to return in future years. “First Baptist Church has always presented an outstanding venue for children or all ages ensuring a safe and fun environment,” said Festival Chair, Sharon NeSmith.

PIE EATING CONTEST

The Pie Eating Contest is a long-standing tradition at the Bar58 OWENSBORO PARENT

. May // June 2017

B-Q Fest and is always fun for children of all ages. This year, the event will be held at noon on Saturday at the Overlook Stage. There are several awards presented and you do not have to register to sign up for the sweet competition - just show up a few minutes before to enter.

BACK YARD COOKOFF

Who does not like BBQ samples of all kind, no matter your age? Stroll down the Back Yard Cook competitor’s area and sample their skills at making a roll of Kentucky Legend BBQ'd bologna taste fantastic, as well as samplings of barbecued sausage, ham, pork, chicken, and beef. Children can watch the cooks at work and start honing their skills to compete in future years for the “Grill Master” title.

FOOD & CRAFTS

BBQ and burgoo are the Festival highlights, but it’s hard to ignore the funnel cakes, lemonade shakeups, and popcorn as you peruse the vendor area that appeals to both children and adults. You may also find a unique item from the many vendors in the arts and crafts section. Since Mother's Day is that same weekend, children may find that special gift for Sunday too.

WORLD MUTTON EATING CHAMPIONSHIP

The Mutton Glutton Sandwich Eating Contest, sponsored by Kentucky Legend, is bringing in celebrities seen on CNN and ESPN to set a new world record for the number of mutton sandwiches eaten. It is amazing to see the amounts consumed; however, for the kids, just watch and don't try this at home. These competitors are actual professionals who train for these www.OwensboroParent.com

events to showcase a special talent they have developed.

BAR-B-Q FEST 5K

There is no better way to work up an appetite than to participate in the BBQ Fest 5K! The BBQ Fest 5K Run/Walk has become one of the most popular 5K races in the area. All proceeds benefit the Financial Assistance programs at the Owensboro Family YMCA. Many school groups participate, so check with your child’s school. Or run as a family. Have fun, be healthy, and help others while enjoying the BBQ Festival weekend! See the YMCA for registration details.

SIT A SPELL

The Festival Plaza Stage area (McConnell Plaza on Veterans Blvd) is a great place to rest and enjoy the entertainment. There are adult beverages in this area; however, there are also soft drinks, water and plenty of room for families. Many activities will be in this area, including the Awards Ceremony for the Governor's Trophy

www.OwensboroParent.com

(cooking teams), Back Yard Grill Master, and eating contest, along with great music. “Our bands understand we are a family event and are required to respect the audiences,” NeSmith said.

CORN HOLE

The Mutton Glutton Corn Hole Classic will return this year and will be located in the Convention Center to allow for more entries and a larger audience. The Cornhole Classic awards trophies and cash prizes based on the number of entries and is fun to watch while cheering for your favorite team to win.

BENCH PRESS AND DEAD LIFT The Bench Press and Dead Lift Competition, also held in the Convention Center, is a crowd pleaser for observers of all ages. Concessions are available in the Convention Center while you watch the events. OP

Danny May is a staff writer at Tanner Publishing Co. and a regular contributor to Owensboro Parent Magazine. He and his wife Kelly are raising two very active boys, 7 and 9. Follow his blog at insightfromanordinarydad.com.

Something for Everyone

The first thing to know about the Bar-B-Q Festival is that it is for everyone! Festival organizers do their best to plan a wide variety of activities and food appealing to all age groups. Please join the fun on May 12th & 13th to find your family favorites and establish a family tradition for years to come. "Come for the Food, Stay for the Fun" As you stroll through the Festival area, check out the kids who are helping the large cooking teams. They are learning skills that have been passed down from generation to generation so they can carry on the BBQ heritage for Owensboro and Daviess County. Stirring the burgoo pot is always a first lesson for many!

adventures to be had!

tips for traveling with children { by: sarah osborne, aprn }

T

raveling with kids is not everyone’s idea of a vacation. My husband and I have five children. Our oldest is 9 and our youngest will be 2 in June. Even though we’re extremely outnumbered, we’ve found ways to travel and have a great time together. These family journeys may seem like a lot of work – and they are – but they’re also worth it. These memories that we are making with our kids today will last a lifetime. As a mom of five, I have to have a plan when we set off on our adventures.

On the way: Where planning pays off

Before you go: Plan ahead

sometimes turn out to be the most memorable moments of

Here are some tips and tricks for planning out your vacation: • If you’re going someplace new, take advantage of others’ experience and their reviews! There are many online resources and blogs that can provide great ideas for where you should go and what you should take with you. • Bring all of your layers. Going to the beach or will your hotel have a pool? Pack swimsuits! Don’t forget related items like flotation items, towels, sunscreen, sunglasses, bug spray, etc. • Check out the amenities. Some destinations even have things like playpens, in-room refrigerators, or rooms specially furnished for families. There are even rental companies that specialize in children’s items like high chairs and baby beds, so you do not have pack your own. • Build in some downtime. Vacation is for relaxing, and sometimes you just need to take a breather. Don’t jam-pack your schedule, or you’re going to end up feeling stressed.

the trip.

www.OwensboroParent.com

Preparing for a trip isn’t just about the activities when you get there. It’s also about planning just how you’ll get there. Here are some ways to prepare for your journey: •

Stop along the way. Take time to let your little ones

stretch their legs, and go ahead and plan extra time for potty breaks. Check out the sights along the way. It’s fun to show your children new and different things and these can

Pre-pack your snacks. This lets you choose healthier

options than fast food or gas station food. Fill sealable bags with sliced fruit or granola bars. But be prepared if you ask a small child to open a snack bag in the car and pack some wipes! Cooler bags with ice packs fit in a car much easier than a cooler. Bring water (I use refillable bottles to save on cost and cut down on trash) and avoid caffeinated drinks, which can result in even more potty breaks. •

Forgo fancy footwear. Wear slip-on shoes that are easy

to get on and off, like flip-flops. This makes getting in and out of the car a lot easier. •

Do a pre-travel checkup. When you check your car

before you travel, make sure car and booster seats are properly installed and in good working order, too.

If you’re flying, you can also keep these tips in mind:

General tips

There are some other bits of wisdom that I’d like to share: • Take a breath or pause for a moment. This is especially important if you’re feeling stressed. • You’re going to forget something. This is a law of the universe. Don’t stress about it. More than likely it’s something you can substitute an inexpensive, temporary item found at your destination. • Make sure your kids know before the trip that this is for the whole family. If your children know that they’re not the center of the universe on this vacation, it may help them be more compliant and less demanding. • Save the longer trips for when your children are a little older. They’ll get more out of the trip and it’ll be a lot easier to plan out. • Learn from your travels. After your trip, take some time to think about what worked and what didn’t. What you learn can help you on your next trip. For more travel tips and ideas, the American Academy of Pediatrics has a great page on their resource website, www.healthychildren.org. You can also talk to your pediatric provider. We can provide you with tips, ideas and resources that can help you on your travels. Bon voyage!

Check your car seat or stroller at the gate. This makes it easier

to get to the gate with your child and you know that it will arrive at the same time as you. It also makes it less likely that these will endure rough treatment or end up under other items. • Baby wearing makes getting through security checkpoints much easier. Don’t forget your carrier or sling. •

Breast milk is exempt from the rules against carrying liquids.

If you pack it with ice packs, make sure these packs are frozen solid. If they’ve thawed, they will show up as liquid, and you may be asked to discard them. •

Breast pumps are medical equipment, so these do not count

against your number of carry-on and checked bags, or personal items. • Airplanes are pressurized, which can cause ear discomfort. For older children, chewing gum or having something to drink can make it easier to equalize ear pressure, relieving the discomfort. For infants, giving them a bottle or breastfeeding them can have the same effect.

fruits and vegetables into daily meals and snacks. Get started by visiting a local farm or the farmer’s market to give your kids the “farm-to-table” experience. You can even take it a step further and grow your own garden. If you do not have a green thumb, start small with potted herbs or vegetables in containers. Also, have the kids participate in the meal planning and preparation. They will be more likely to eat foods they have grown, chosen, or cooked. Finally, find new ways to prepare fruits and vegetables. Try roasting vegetables and then putting them on pizza for a new twist on a classic favorite. Grilling fruits, like peaches, pineapples, or strawberries, brings out their natural sugars and can be served as a healthy dessert or sweet salad topping.

Goal #2: Drink more water.

If your children are not accustomed to drinking

much water, summer is a great time to start this habit as the rising temperatures make them crave hydration. To encourage water consumption, keep labeled or color-coded cups for each child in an easy to reach area. They can use the same cup all day, so it will cut down on dishes. You may also try keeping

HEALTHY SUMMER

bucket list { by: shanna mcginnis,

MD, FAAP

}

One of our favorite family traditions is to create a summer bucket list of fun activities to complete between the last day of the old school year and the first day of the new one. We love to take advantage of the extra free time and extra long days. By writing down a list of activities and posting it in a common area, we have a visual reminder of things to do. The kids really enjoy checking things off the list as we go. This summer, your family might try a new spin on the conventional bucket list and develop a list of healthy habits to incorporate into your daily routine. I’ve started with a list of five goals for a healthy summer.

. May // June 2017

some slices of citrus fruits, fresh berries, cucumbers, or sprigs of mint to add fresh flavor to water. Another alternative is to freeze these items into ice cubes that will both chill and flavor the water.

Goal #3: Get adequate sleep.

As the school year routine relaxes during summer,

bedtimes tend to be more relaxed as well. However, it is still important for children to get adequate sleep during summer. The amount of time that a child sleeps is important, but the actual bedtime and wake time is important as well. Try not to deviate more than an hour from their typical bedtime and wake time. This may mean going to bed while the sun is still up. As the first day of school approaches, start to get back www.OwensboroParent.com

to your school year sleep schedule to make the transition smooth.

Goal #4: Exercise more.

Getting exercise by playing outside is undoubtedly one of the

best parts of summer. Unfortunately, these days, playing outside has to compete with the various forms of media available to kids. To combat this, enforce “no media” times when your kids are not allowed to watch television, use the computer, play on their tablet, etcetera, etcetera. You might create a specific list of outdoor activities for them to do for those times when they dare utter, “I’m bored.” I’ll start with a few ideas. • Go on a river walk • Hula hoop • Run through the sprinkler • Play hopscotch • Pull weeds in the garden • Play tag • Have a scavenger hunt • Jump rope • Host field day at your house for the neighborhood kids

The possibilities are really endless. Just remember to be safe

and don’t forget the sunscreen.

Goal #5: Learn something.

Summer learning loss is defined by the National Summer

Learning Association (NSLA) as “the phenomenon where young people lose academic skills over the summer”. To help your kids retain more knowledge, keep their minds active. One of the best ways to stay on track is to set aside a specific time for reading each day or pick one day each week to visit the library. Older kids might consider starting a neighborhood book club. If your children have challenges in specific areas, talk with their teacher before school lets out about what would benefit them most this summer. Extra hours during summer time might also be a good opportunity to tackle a new hobby or begin learning a musical instrument.

These five goals are just a starting point. Think about some

other healthy habits your family would like to accomplish and create your own personalized bucket list. Be sure to participate with your kids and remember to have fun!

hen you think of Owensboro, fashion may not be the first thing on your mind.

We’re surrounded by bigger cities full of malls, superstores, and trendy thrift shops. Not to mention online shopping is taking the world by storm. Years ago, taking regular shopping trips to Evansville was the only way to go if you wanted to get something special. I’m happy to report that this is no longer the case.

My name is Julia Hartz, and I’m an Owensboro

native and fashion blogger. You’ll find me taking pictures around town in brightly colored outfits, with my blonde miniature dachshund in hand. There’s a safe bet that I’m either holding balloons or champagne, wearing high heels and spinning around like a crazy person, but don’t let that scare you into not taking me seriously. I’ve been blogging for almost four years now, and I have to say it’s brought me more joy than anything I’ve ever done. People get the idea in their heads that fashion and clothing are frivolous vanities that aren’t important, don’t help anybody, and are more or less unnecessary. What most people don’t realize is that what you wear is the first impression someone has of you. It’s the first thing you say to someone without even opening your mouth. Fashion is art, even if it’s simple. What you wear says something about who you are and what you want out of life, and I think that’s a pretty big deal.

People still talk about Jackie Kennedy’s pink

suit, about Kate Middleton’s latest and greatest outfit. Do you think people don’t notice what you wear? You don’t have to marry a president or a prince for your style to be iconic. The great thing about this growing city is that there are far more shopping options than there have ever been. Our boutiques are now the stars of the show. Owensboro has become a shopping destination, instead of an afterthought.

With the constant presence of social networks

such as Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and Pinterest, shopping is easier than ever. Supporting local boutiques is a breeze, because most of them consistently post new arrivals and store updates, and will ship pretty much anywhere. A common misconception about boutiques is that they carry overpriced, expensive merchandise that costs too much for you to wear to Friday After 5, in the event that you spill your cocktail on your new one-of-a-kind dress. Yes, boutique clothing can be pricey. But I’m here to show you that usually quality overcomes quantity, and that mixing pieces of different price ranges is completely doable, and dare I say, fun!

Summer Trends for 2017

I’m excited to be beginning this journey with summer

fashion, because it’s my favorite season to dress for! The colors are brighter, the styles are lighter, and there’s a laidback vibe. Summer clothing is all about transitional pieces. A sundress with sandals or flats is perfect for a day of shopping with friends, and then can transform into a night look with

WAYS

to avoid the

summer slide { by: ashley sorce }

For many children, summer break is when books are forgotten and the “break” from learning begins. While fun and relaxing, this break has downsides: it can lead to the dreaded “summer brain drain”—a time when learning and engagement decide to hibernate until fall. This doesn’t have to happen. Even during the summer months, students can continue to learn, accomplish their educational goals, and expand their creativity. Here are some entertaining summer activities to keep students engaged all summer long:

Try a Summer Science Project You can find so many ideas online, but make it something summer themed. Test the effectiveness of different sunscreen SPFs. Learn about constellations in your backyard and then make a constellation projector to take the stars inside. Plant a flower garden and experiment with different amounts of sunlight, water and soil to determine the best growing environment.

Plan out “Theme Days” Make every day of the week fun and exciting, focusing on something different each day! A rainy day could be dedicated to the reading – visit Daviess County Public Library and let your child pick out her own books. (Did you know your kiddo 72 OWENSBORO PARENT

. May // June 2017

could have their own card as early as age 3?) Then come home and set up a super fun reading area just for the day. It could be a tent or in a comfy chair. Pop popcorn and encourage your child to discuss what he read.

Encourage Writing A fun way to get your kids to enjoy writing is to write letters or post cards. They can draw, color, or paint pictures to go along with it that will also build on their creativity.

Kids’ Dinner Night With older kids, a kids dinner night can be a fun way to teach responsibility and let them have fun. They could be in charge of coming up with the shopping list (Mom or Dad still has to pay), setting the table, preparing the meal, deciding on the dinner conversation topic and cleaning up afterward. It involves math, organizational and, perhaps most importantly, life skills.

Slide in some Math Do menu math at a restaurant, asking kids how much food they can afford with a certain amount of money. A lemonade stand could be a perfect way to promote math skills while still having fun. Your child would have to budget the purchase of products as well as the management of profits earned. OP
