Ashley's : s g n i h T e t i r o v a F from the editor I have always been very honest with the parents that read this magazine. I think as parents, we have to support each other and have each others’ backs and for me, a big part of that is sharing my story. Three years ago, I opened up about my divorce. It was a difficult time and learning to be on my own was tough. The holidays were especially hard because of the pressure to maintain the perfect holiday season for two amazing kids. It’s no secret that I can’t cook. My kids tell everyone that the best thing I cook is Chick-fil-A. Despite my lack of culinary skills, I was determined to make my grandmother’s peanut butter fudge. I had tried in years past and failed miserably. (A fail so epic it turned out like dried Play-Doh.) Last year I succeeded though and while it still wasn’t as good as Memaw’s, it came pretty close.
We got through it together, with a lot of love from our village of family and friends. Our new life became our new normal, until two years ago. I began dating someone and our normal changed a little more. And this holiday season, I may be looking forward to more than any before because…I’m married! This Thanksgiving and Christmas will be spent in our new home with our newly formed family of four, keeping alive traditions Avery, Reed and I have made in the past and making new ones together that we will continue in the years to come.
My kids each have their own small tree they get to decorate for their rooms. Avery’s has pink lights and Reed’s has blue. They picked out a cheap set of decorations in the same color scheme — beaded garland and various small plastic ornaments. But each year, I let them pick out one ornament they can add to their tree, encouraging them to pick something they love at the time. Last year, Avery chose this unicorn and Reed chose Pickle from Blaze and the Monster Machines.
My husband, Drew, is the answer to so many prayers. We have actually known each other since we were 14, but found each other later in life after the paths we thought God intended for us were, in fact, not the final destination. My kids love him and he completes our family in a way that I didn’t think was possible.
Each year, I have my kids make an ornament for our tree. I usually let them pick them out after a quick “easy ornaments kids can make” Google search. These snowmen were the winners last year. We took a quick trip to Hobby Lobby for supplies, coming in at under $10 for everything, and made them the same afternoon. I help with the hot glue gun and Avery helps Reed when scissors are required. Family time and a new ornament — win-win!

This season, for me, is more about spending time with those that we love. Drew and I hope to focus a little less on the “perfect” Christmas and more on why we celebrate the season in the first place. It is the eternal love and grace of Jesus that held me together after divorce, and just as He was with me in that valley, He is the reason we are now celebrating Christmas as a family of four. This year, I encourage you to think less about presents and more about presence. Worry less about checklists and the perfect holiday, and live in the moment, making memories with family and friends. Until next year, happy holidays from all of us at Owensboro Parent!
Each year we read “The Night Before Christmas” on, you guessed it, the night before Christmas. I feel this is an obvious Christmas tradition, but I had never read it until I read it to my kids. And, if I’m being honest, it isn’t my favorite. It’s not an easy read and it always results in more questions than I can handle. What’s a ‘kerchief? What’s a sugarplum? Why is Santa smoking a pipe? But tradition is tradition, right?!

YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR STARTS BASEBALL APPAREL BUSINESS
Owensboro’s youngest-known entrepreneur recently created his own online store, craftily named BaseballKid Apparel. The online store, which launched three weeks ago, carries athletic t-shirts for both kids and adults. Nolan Johnson, a sixth-grade student at Burns, decided to combine his passion for the sport with his love for baseball fashion to create BaseballKid. He created a business plan, obtained investors and launched a full-scale social media campaign. “I love baseball t-shirts,” Johnson said. “It was my goal to bring the sport to life through creatively designed t-shirts.” Johnson was a member of the Owensboro Southern Little League program that made a deep run in the post-season this past summer. The many memories he’s created playing baseball serve as inspiration for his t-shirt designs.
ONE YEAR LATER: OLLER FAMILY REFLECTS ON CHANGED OUTLOOK
When Daviess County High School junior Grant Oller was admitted to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital on Sept. 24, 2018, his family was unaware of the long road that was in front of them. Two nights before his admittance, Grant had been enjoying the evening at a school dance, but by Sunday, he had fallen extremely ill.
The online store presently boasts four designs, a number he hopes to grow in the coming months. Additionally, he hopes to add other apparel options. “Right now we are focusing on t-shirts,” he said. “We hope to expand to other items and other sports.” Photo by Jacqueline Jordan Photography
According to Nick Oller, Grant’s dad, the care they received locally was excellent, and he said without the quick move to action, which included transporting Grant to Louisville, Nick said his son may not be alive today. Doctors at Norton diagnosed Grant with Acute Respiratory Disease. His stay at Norton spanned a total of 60 days. The Oller family describes the care they received under the physicians and nurses there as exceptional. Beyond grateful, the Ollers believe the whole experience has changed their outlook on life. Going through a medical scare has encouraged them to give back and help others in this community. It also changed the way they view day-to-day tasks and feel blessed to have their son well. As for Grant, he says he’s getting stronger every day. He has been meeting with a personal trainer since May, and according to his mom is stronger than ever before. As a senior baseball player at DCHS, Grant is working hard to finish his baseball career strong. He does not take this experience for granted. “It was all pretty surreal. I was a regular teenager at a high school dance and then a few days later I’m on life support,” Grant said. “It makes you appreciate life more. I thank God every day I get to wake up in my bed even if it’s just to go to school.”
NEWTON PARRISH STUDENT THANKS CUSTODIAN FOR FRIENDSHIP
First-grader Owen Bracelin has a special friendship with Newton Parrish Elementary School custodian Eric Lloyd. To celebrate National Custodian Appreciation Day, Owen took a candy bouquet to “Mr. Eric,” as Lloyd is known to the students. Owen, who was absent due to several surgeries during his kindergarten year, said he was nervous to come to school each day. That's when Lloyd stepped in. He asked Owen to help him each morning when he arrived at school, and Owen reacted positively and has been going early ever since. For two years, Owen has arrived early at Newton Parrish to spend time with Lloyd. Beyond the morning time, Owen said Lloyd also helps him open his lunch, among other things.

MASHED POTATO BALLS
NOTES: This recipe is based off preference and "eyeballing." Adjust the measurements according to your taste and how much leftover mashed potatoes you have left! If your leftover mashed potatoes are too dry/crumbly, try heating them up again and adding a bit more milk. If you can't get them to the correct consistency, you can also try adding an egg. WHAT YOU'LL NEED: ›› 5 cups leftover mashed potatoes ›› 1 cup cooked bacon, crumbled ›› 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded ›› 1/4 cup green onions, chopped (more for garnish) ›› 2 eggs (beaten, for egg wash) ›› 1 cup breadcrumbs ›› Oil for frying (your preference - I used avocado oil) ›› Optional: Italian seasoning, cayenne, garlic powder, salt & pepper (mix in with breadcrumbs - to taste) INSTRUCTIONS: ›› Add the mashed potatoes, bacon, cheese, and green onions in a bowl and mix until combined. ›› Roll the mixture into 1-2 inch balls, then chill them in the refrigerator for 15 minutes. ›› Heat your choice of oil (around 1.5-2 inches deep) in a deep pan to 350°. ›› Put the egg wash in one bowl, and the breadcrumbs (mixed with your choice of seasonings) in another bowl. ›› Dip each mashed potato ball in the egg, before rolling in the seasoned breadcrumbs and placing in the oil to fry. Don't overcrowd your pan with too many of the mashed potato balls at once. Use tongs to flip the potatoes after around 2-3 minutes (until brown) to cook the entire ball evenly. ›› Once the entire mashed potato ball has browned, lay them on a baking rack or a paper towel-lined plate. Serve warm with optional garnishes (I used shredded parmesan and additional green onion). OP

It stores well sealed at room temperature for 1-2 weeks! WHAT YOU'LL NEED: ›› Salted crackers of your choice (enough to line a pan) ›› 1 cup brown sugar ›› 2 sticks of butter (unsalted) ›› 2 cups chocolate chips (your preference - I used semi-sweet) ›› Optional: Your choices of toppings (I used Christmas M&M's. Sprinkles, nuts, toffee, and other candy bits taste great!)

THROW A
kid-friendly N E W Y E A R ' S E V E PA R T Y By Ashley Sorce-Wedding // Photos by Jamie Alexander
Since my kiddos are finally old enough to make it to midnight, I decided to throw a little New Year’s Eve Party for them last year. No guests and no real plan, just a night of hanging out with a little organized fun. It was a huge hit with them and the grown ups had fun too.
T H E SET U P
The main part of the night centered around a balloon countdown, which I created on the mantle. (A wall would work just fine too!) The balloons served as an hour-by-hour countdown until midnight. I blew up a balloon and slid a small piece of paper inside, each with a fun activity written on it. I tied the balloons and taped them to the mantle after writing a time on each one with a marker. We started at 6 p.m., meaning we had seven balloons/ activities until midnight, but you can have as many as you want.
6 P.M.
WINNER, WINNER, CHICK-FIL-A DINNER It’s no secret that my family loves Chick-fil-A. My kids tell everyone they meet that it’s the best thing I cook. So why wouldn’t we start off a party with some CFA?!
7 P.M.
SLIME STATION My kids love slime. They had been dying to make floam — slime with styrofoam balls in it. For months I told them no, not wanting to deal with the mess. So when they saw that we were making that on New Year’s Eve, they were super excited.

8 P.M.
CRAFT Y CREATION The next activity of the night was a homemade noisemaker. I bought some cheap noisemakers at the dollar store and paper plates. The kids busted out all the supplies from the craft cabinet (it’s basically a small Hobby Lobby) and made noisemaker creatures. Googly eyes, pom poms, pipe cleaners, markers — use whatever you have on hand. They loved them. Note: If I had it to do all over again, I would make this a later activity so you don’t have to hear the noisemakers the whole night — or deal with the kids blowing them in each other's faces!
9 P.M.
FAMILY GAME TIME I had some timethemed minute to win it games ready for them. Their favorite was moving M&M’s from one plate to another by a straw in their mouth. They had to place each candy on an hour on the clock I drew on a plate.
10 P.M.
COOKIE MONSTERS I basically love any excuse to make cookies! We made chocolate chip cookies from scratch — and by from scratch, I mean the cookie mix you just add a few ingredients to.
11 P.M.
GLOW DANCE PART Y While I was getting the noisemakers at the dollar store, I picked up a variety of glow sticks — bracelets, necklaces and glasses. We turned out all the lights, turned up the Kidz Bop and danced away the last hour of 2018.
12 P.M.
BALLOON DROP I wanted something special to end the night and remembered the balloon drop event that the Owensboro Museum of Science and History has each year. For $4 with a balloon drop bag from Walmart, I created the same thing at home — just a much smaller scale. The kids loved it and was the perfect ending to a fun-filled night! OP

Why should you choose a local attorney? I
f you spend any time driving around Owensboro, you have probably noticed more and more billboards advertising the
services of law firms. Many of the law firms who advertise in Owensboro do not have offices in Owensboro, nor do they have any connection to Owensboro. This means many of the law firms advertising in Owensboro are doing nothing to contribute back to our community. While that fact alone should be enough to motivate people to choose local attorneys, there are many other reasons to choose local attorneys.
SAVE MONEY When your attorney is from out of town, it will cost more for your attorney to travel to hearings and other court appearances. In a case where court appearances are required multiple times before the case has concluded, this can mean the difference in thousands of dollars for legal fees and expenses. parental control { Q&A with Christina Dalton, MSSW, CSW }
I have 4-year-old twins, a boy and a girl. I am “consistent with both of them. My son's behavior is very frustrating. Nothing seems to faze him. My daughter, on the other hand, I can put her in time out or take something away and she acts as if the world is ending. How can I keep consistency when something only works for one and nothing works for the other one?

a:
This is one of the best questions I have received. I feel like I see this a lot in the classrooms too. I think it is very important to remember that all behavior serves a purpose. It is easy to be caught up in routine too because we preach that kids need consistency and routine. I agree that is a true statement, but sometimes what works for one child is not going to work for another child, especially in the same home. When looking at what works best for your daughter, you have to figure out what works best for your son and it is perfectly ok that those are different supports. Some kids need more supports in place to control their behaviors. When it comes to behavior I want you to remember whatever you feed, will grow. What we pay attention to is what we will see the most of. Think about your son's behavior and how much time and attention it
sounds like you have to put into his negative behavior. When I say that, please do not misunderstand me. I am not saying there are no consequences. You have to have consequences in life for bad choices. I am saying that when things are going well, these are the times that you are giving the most attention and praise for what he or she is doing right. Going back to that statement, whatever you feed, will grow. If we are spending 80% of our time letting our kids know what they are doing great, those behaviors will grow and flourish. It is not as much fun to throw a fit or blow up if no one pays attention to it. Great question. Just some food for thought to think about. Every child is different and therefore has different needs to support them to be successful and it is our job as adults to help figure out what those look like. OP

snow can severely irritate the lungs if inhaled so keep these out of reach. Avoid
using
breakable

decorations and use caution with sharp ornament hangers. Also avoid decorations that resemble candy or food because small children may try to eat them. Popcorn or cranberry garlands can be a choking hazard for little ones. Bubble lights are less common these days, but they contain a fluid that is poisonous if ingested. Certain seasonal plants, such as mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias are also potentially poisonous if ingested. Contact the National Poison Center at (800) 222-1222 if you have concerns regarding an ingestion.

Holidays By Shanna McGinnis

When traveling or visiting other
homes for holiday events and parties, remember to keep a very close eye on your children. If the party host does not have kids, the home is probably not child-proofed. Be aware of accessible stairs,
uncovered
outlets,
and
cabinets that could contain hazardous chemicals. Although you may avoid them at home, candles or fires in the fireplace are common at holiday gatherings. For older children, teach them the importance of steering clear
of open flames. Our family mantra when visiting others is “We look with our eyes, not with our hands.” Speaking of hands, this is a good time to review and enforce good hand hygiene practices to prevent the spread of cold and flu viruses.
Caution should be exercised when it comes to food
and drinks at parties as well. If your children have food allergies, be sure to inquire about ingredients used. Seasonal baked goods contain some of the most common food allergens - milk, eggs, nuts, and wheat. If you are not able to get ingredient information, err on the side of caution and choose a different food. When in doubt, leave it out. If you have been advised by your doctor to carry an EpiPen, make sure you have it with you, not just during holiday parties, but all the time. Also be attentive to bowls or trays of food or candies left on tables during “open house” style events. Although this is a practical strategy for easy entertaining, it can get little ones into trouble if they eat foods that are choking hazards or allergy risks. If alcohol is being served, ensure that your child’s beverage is nonalcoholic and they are not sneaking sips from other cups.
One of the most fun parts about this time of year is
gift giving, but nothing will ruin the fun more quickly than a toy-related illness or injury. Ensure that the toy is age appropriate. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other family members (at least in my family) are notorious for purchasing toys that are too advanced. A toy that may be appropriate and safe for a 10-year-old may not be for a 5-year-old. It probably will not be fun for the younger child either. Be sure that art supplies, such as crayons, markers, paints, and clay, are non-toxic. Painted toys should be covered in lead-free paint. Lead paint has been banned in the United States since 1978; however, it may be found on vintage toys or products imported from other countries. With so much online shopping these days, it is becoming easier to receive a toy that contains lead paint. For more information on toy safety, visit the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website at http://www.cpsc.gov/.
The holidays are a great time to gather with friends
and family, but don’t leave safety out of your celebration. We hope you have a happy and healthy holiday this year!

EVEN T S AN D ACTIVITIES FOR OWE NSBORO FAMILIES
Christmas Light Adventure
Grab some hot chocolate, turn up your favorite Christmas music and pile in the car. A Christmas light adventure is a great outing for the whole family to get in the holiday spirit. Here are a few must-see light locations around town! CHRISTMAS IN STONEGATE While a majority of the neighborhood joins in on the holiday lighting, the Lashbrook’s house, which has been featured on the hit show the Great Christmas Light Fight, is the crown jewel. Using about 200,000 lights, the Lashbrooks certainly have a display you won't want to miss. They even unveiled a 20 foot snowman last year, which to the family's knowledge is the tallest in the world. Santa Claus and his helpers will be greeting visitors during the season, handing out hot chocolate and candy canes. Check the Owensboro Christmas Lights Facebook page for details on dates.
5627 HIGHWAY 405 Just a little drive out in the county, but worth it! This house is just a little way down 405, which is just before you get to Yellow Creek Park. You can even pull over across the house in the Yellow Creek Baptist Church back driveway in order to get a better look! GRIFFITH AVENUE Many houses along both sides of Griffith Avenue have elaborate decorations.
By Ashley Sorce-Wedding // Photo by AP Imagery
3104 HARNESS LOOP Decorations surround this house, filling the front yard, both side yards and the back yard as well, which can be seen off Fairview Drive behind CVS. Pull into Harness Loop off Stirrup Loop and tune into the FM station on the sign in the front yard to experience the synchronized light show.
INDEPENDENCE BANK MAIN BRANCH If you need some Christmas spirit during work hours, just walk inside the Independence Branch main branch. The giant Christmas tree in the lobby is a jaw-dropper! It stands 28' tall (just 2 feet shy of the outdoor tree in Smothers Park) and holds 10,000 lights. The decorated window displays in the entryway are nice as well.
