Built on a small plot the hotel bas tried to utilize the maximum amount of space available strategically. DĂŠcor of the place is very simple and seems that more focus has been put on making the place functional. The cafĂŠ situated next to the reception area with the capacity of 20 is not enough for accommodating all the guests present at the same time. No housekeeping room or janitor room was accommodated and they were just given a dirty corner of the premises, next to the parking. The rooms were decent enough and utility based. Situated in the prestigious north-eastern quarter of the Walled City, in the very shade of Mehrangarh's Victory Palace and Gate, and a stone's throw from the Clock Tower; RAAS comprised, in fact, of four charismatic buildings in Jodhpur's very own 'rose-red' sandstone. The oldest, the Haveli proper as it were, was built towards the end of the 18th Century and with its delicately carved stone panels - the hall-mark of Rajput Architecture served as the exclusive and intimate residence of the family. Source: studiolotus.in

Source: archdaily.com

Raas Jodhpur is a luxury boutique hotel with 39 rooms built in the context of the Old city quarter of Jodhpur. This has been translated into a project where there is a dialogue between the old and the new. Luxury was about being authentic both in terms materials and workmanship, and in providing visitors a tactile and sensual experience within the historical context of the old city of Jodhpur without aping the old. The property was inherited with three, beautiful period structures (17th18th century) which have been painstakingly restored with traditional craftsman in Source: studiolotus.in the original materials such as lime mortar and Jodhpur sandstone. 36 rooms have been created, spread over 3 contemporary buildings, (using the same materials and skills as the traditional buildings) inserted into the site in a manner that they frame the visual and spatial relationship among the old buildings and the Fort, creating a dialogue between the old and the new. Source: studiolotus.in

Special Features Inspired by the age old double skinned structures of the region, (the traditional stone latticed jharokha forms of Rajasthani architecture – which perform multiple functions of passive cooling and offering privacy to the user) these buildings act as lanterns framing the site. The drama of the stone jaali (lattice) is heightened by the fact that these panels can be folded away by each user to reveal uninterrupted views of the fort, or can be closed for privacy and to keep the harsh Jodhpur sun out. Source: studiolotus.in

Source: studiolotus.in

ANALYSIS: Raas, Jodhpur has made the best use of its location (base of Mehrangarh Fort) by using its scenic view to as a backdrop for of the hotel. It is a perfect blend of the old and new which provides the guests an experience like no other. Each element has been carefully and intelligently designed to bring out the Rajasthan art and traditions. The hotel has used techniques and materials present within the area to form a sustainable environment which shows that there are many ways in which unique spaces can be formed without spending too much time and money for construction. What we found commendable was the construction of contemporary buildings without making changes in the old structures to build a complex which is a fusion of both traditional and modern forms. The way the climatic conditions have also been taken into consideration by use of simple techniques like foldable Jharokha windows is quite commendable. Source: studiolotus.in

Contemporary design elements pay reference to the Balinese lifestyle and lush green gardens that reflect the natural beauty of the island. The exterior of Katamama takes its cues from the Balinese building practice of tri angga, a concept where the spatial structure reflects harmony between the building and its occupants. Source: archdaily.com Source: archdaily.com

Source: archdaily.com

Source: archdaily.com

The idea behind Katamama was to represent Bali. It feels Balinese, but modern at the same time. The main concept is actually the 'modern' architecture of 60s and 70s. Itâ€&#x;s very geometrical. And these days, when almost every hotel in Bali is planned with the curved lines, itâ€&#x;s quite unusual Source: archdaily.com

Source: archdaily.com

The raw brick of the walls are highlighted in the suites and wide boards of teak are used for the flooring. Other wall finishes include solid-timber slats and a rough pale coloured plaster. The main spaces of the suites are designed to be as open as possible with the bathroom separated by a set of decorative sliding panels that can open to make the bathroom part of the main space. Each bedroom looks out onto a balcony terrace with a day-bed, table and chairs and becomes an extension of the Source: archdaily.com room, with the same hand-made brick material extending out from the room wall. Source: archdaily.com

Katamama features an elevated lobby allowing guests to view the pool and surrounding landscape. Rooms that occupy the lower floor are described as “introverted by Matin, with a secluded view to the garden. His vision for the building was to allow guests to see a different angle of the landscape from every Source: archdaily.com level of the hotel.

Source: archdaily.com

ANALYSIS: Katamama hotel forms an experiential dialogue between the traditional and the modern with the architecture taking inspiration from Balanies lifestyle whereas as the interiors taking up a modern look. It provides a new and different atmosphere while being deeply rooted in Balanies traditions. Source: archdaily.com

Boutique Hotel Project Brief Location: Ahmedabad, Gujarat Theme: Gujarat Concept Statement: The concept is to design a hotel that forms a symphony of light and shadow by use of both daylight (natural) and artificial light. By use of simple techniques of playing with light, different spaces will have a dynamic yet mysterious feel to it and will provide an extraordinary experience to the guests.

Experiential Narrative: Change is the only constant and to constantly provide a changing experience to the guests walking into the hotel is my objective. I designed a hotel based on the concept of playing with light and shadow by use of both modern and traditional methods to form a contemporary look. Situated in Ahmedabad, the hotel‟s design will optimize the use of resources available and will take inspiration from the local crafts and harness natural light (generating solar energy) to form a sustainable environment. ZONING

Space Designing

I started off by playing with different forms both angular and curved

To bring out a contemporary look in in the hotel, I decided to play with curves in spatial design while retaining the traditional geometric forms in interior finishes and dĂŠcor.

I then decided to play only with straight lines and angles but it formed purely traditional look to the spaces.

After a few changes, the layout was finalized which had a blend of contemporary and traditional forms.
