uch research is being done on the brain and on how your outlook on the world affects your life and your experiences in it. Most seems to indicate a very real connection between your perception of the world and the ability that you have to achieve your goals in life, whatever they may be. Great thinkers believe that the more you understand of yourself the clearer your goals become and happiness can be achieved, as the goals are directly in sync with your innermost needs, desires and aspirations. Your perceptions, understandings, thought processes and consumption determines your experience of life. Remember consumption is not only what you eat but also what you think about, read, watch and do. Once again, self-awareness is key, what stresses you out will not necessarily affect someone else; it is you who has to choose, you must determine what suits you in terms of what you consume. If you choose to watch movies or read sensationalist stories that stress you out and give you a negative view of humanity, that will be the type of reality you create for yourself. If you choose to overload your body with food and drink that your body rejects you will possibly overstress your organs and become toxic and ill. Stress on a physical level creates toxins and acidity in the body. Overload of this is what leads to illness. In our competitive world it is easy to be critical of others to justify ones own attitudes and ideas, but in some cultures and religions the sign of enlightenment is the ability to see the value in each individual and harness that individual’s value so that they are able to achieve their full potential. There is a belief that every member of a community has the ability to raise that the level of consciousness of that community and that when people are able to live in a positive way the more successful the entire community or society is able to be. One wonders if the general wellbeing that permeated our country during the World Cup had anything to do with the massive individual and group focus on harmony and success. The amazing thing is, It is simple, It costs nothing, It has no risk attached to it, The rewards are enormous… By Camilla Railton

Vitamin D: The “Vitamin R

of the Decade”

elax in the sun for 10-15 minutes each day and top up on one of our most powerful Vitamins! Otherwise known as ‘the sunshine vitamin,’ vitamin D is naturally produced in your body when your skin is exposed to direct sunlight without sunscreen. Interestingly there have been recent reports from doctors in some of the most sunniest parts of the world of diseases related to a lack of this essential vitamin. Also known as the ‘vitamin of the decade,’ due to its numerous health benefits, it protects and maintains healthy brain function also lessening symptoms of depression, M.S and decreasing the symptoms of Parkinsons and Alzheimers. Vitamin D plays an important role in increasing the flow of calcium into the bloodstream, enabling normal bone mineralization and sustaining a healthy skeletal system. Vitamin D helps protect the skin and is used very effectively around the world to treat psoriasis, vitiligo and sclerodema. It helps balance and strengthen the immune system; protecting against colds and even auto-immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Vitamin D also helps lower the risk of developing diabetes and promoting a healthy body weight.

The Power of

Pomegranate

P

omegranates are not only delicious and beautiful; they’re also one of the most nutritious fruits you can eat. They are packed full of vitamin C and potassium as well as folic acid, niacin, phytoestrogens, iron, calcium, phosphorus, fibre and even Vitamin A and E. Pomegranates are also exceptionally rich in antioxidants, and may have even more antioxidant power than red wine or green tea. Pomegranates’ potent antioxidant compounds have been shown to help maintain normal LDL cholesterol levels, naturally lower blood pressure; factors that prevent both heart attacks and strokes. In addition to being good for your heart and blood vessels, pomegranates have been shown to support a healthy immune system, relieve the effects of menopause, combat arthritis, protect against urinary tract infections, and even inhibit breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, and leukaemia. So, whether you crunch fresh pomegranate seeds or drink the juice, enjoy each delicious mouthful as you experience the powerful health benefits of this miraculous super-fruit! By Stephanie Martin

However, probably the most exciting benefit of Vitamin D is its incredible ability to significantly lower the risk of developing cancer, especially breast cancer. It may even reduce tumour growth and inhibit its progession! So when you consider the numerous important health benefits derived from a single substance, Vitamin D is definitely one very impressive nutrient! It seems the best things in life really are free! The New Superfood

– CHIA! P

ronounced CHEE-ah, this highly nutritious seed has been aptly named, ‘History’s Forgotten Superfood’. Lost for over 500 years after the Spanish invasion of the 16th century, Chia is finally making a comeback due to its outstanding nutritional profile. Unlike any other food, Chia provides all that is essential for a healthy diet including Omega 3, dietary fibre and protein, as well as vitamins and minerals including B vitamins, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, boron and copper. It is also a rich source of protective antioxidants and phytonutrients: No wonder it is called a Superfood!

Omega 3

Chia is the richest known plant source of omega 3 fatty acids. Adding just 2 tablespoons of Chia to your daily diet provides an incredible 5 grams of Omega 3 – this is 8 times more than you get from eating Salmon!

Fibre

Chia Facts • 15x more Magnesium than broccoli • 5x more Calcium than milk • 8x more Omega 3 than salmon • 2x more Iron than spinach • More Potassium than Banana • More Antioxidants than blueberries, strawberries and cranberries • 20% Complete Vegetable Protein • Up to 40% Fibre content • Gluten Free • Pesticide free

Chia is up to 40% fibre (5% soluble, 35% insoluble). It forms a gel-like substance when mixed with water, which is easily digestible and incredibly beneficial. The high fibre content helps moderate blood glucose levels, reduce cravings, lower cholesterol, regulate bowel movements and facilitate weight loss: It even promotes the growth of friendly bacteria, or probiotics, which boost the immune system and maintain the natural balance of a healthy digestive system. 2 tablespoons of Chia seeds provides approximately 7 grams of dietary fibre with minimal calories. There is only 1g of usable carbohydrate per 100g!

Protein

Chia is about 20 - 23% protein, which gives it an amazing protein to carbohydrate ratio of 1:2. It contains all 9 essential amino acids (the ones our body cannot produce itself e.g. Lysine) in a balance optimally suited to a human’s needs.

Antioxidants

The black variety of Chia definitely trumps the white variety due to the fact that it contains natural anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine, anti-cancer and other body protecting antioxidants. Its ORAC count is 9900 (exceptionally high for a seed) and it even gives a few of the antioxidant-rich berries a run for their money.

How do I eat it?

For all its power Chia is a remarkably mild tasting seed. You can literally add it to anything, and instead of changing the flavour, it will enhance it. Chai has now finally arrived in South Africa and is available in selected stores. By Stephanie Martin

Change

is the KEY

“People hate change” – that’s the prevalent wisdom offered whenever things don’t work out as planned, especially in the business world.

T

he truth is, people love change! People change their clothes, they change their hairstyle, they change jobs, they change offices, they change marriage partners, they re-arrange their furniture, they travel to new places and they re-arrange their lives on a regular basis. Our physical bodies are constantly changing, our physical environment is constantly changing, our minds are constantly changing, our internal world and our attitudes are changing as we cope with the external changes all around us. Change – that “thing” that everyone is supposedly afraid of – is a normal, natural part of life. In our personal life, it happens when we transition from adolescence to adulthood, from being single to married, then on to becoming a parent, followed by midlife and then retirement. Clients may come to coaching because they want to speed up or deepen a process of change they are going through, whether it be learning a new skill, taking on a new habit or thinking in a new way. Change by its very nature, implies doing things differently, however our brains are built to detect changes and send out strong

6

Breathe Summer 2010

signals to alert us to anything unusual and this often pushes us to act more emotionally and impulsively resulting in panic or feeling out of control. Generally, change is a process that follows a specific pattern. Different kinds of change have different patterns and helping clients to identify the stage of change they are going through, can have the effect of reducing fear simply by having normalised their experience. In the business world change comes with new technology, rapid growth, strategic shifts and mergers. Here, coaches provide an important role for clients, in that they offer the necessary support and structure to deal effectively with change. People are much more likely to accept the changes if they have been helped to come to an idea themselves thus giving the brain the best chance of being energised and motivated by the creation of a new mental “map’. Then followed up with action, the sky is the limit! By Barbara Halsted

Homeopathy

the long term effect...

balance

H

omeopathy is a system of medicine that aims at treating the whole person, taking into account physical, mental and emotional functioning. When viewed in this light, we can explain disease as the unbalancing of a bodily system, whether it is through an excess or deficiency. Homeopathy seeks to restore the inherent balance and stability of the body, returning the body to its wellbeing. The principle of similars or “like cures like is a central homeopathic principle. Our immune system is our bodies greatest defence mechanism, which maintains our health and prevents disease. This complex and highly intricate system is partly inherited and partly affected by lifestyle. Immunity can also be acquired (after experiencing a disease, one may be immune to that disease), be already existing or be passed from mother to child. Treating the disease with the aim of restoring the balance, one has the opportunity to strengthen the immunity. For example, a viral infection generally results in fever. Once the virus has breached the external defence mechanisms such as skin and mucous membranes, the white blood cells will attempt to engulf the virus, from here a complex reaction involving enzymes, amino acids and cytokines will ensue. It is the immune response to the virus that will in part result in raising the body temperature; inflammation will result from among others, a pathway known as the complement system and tumour necrosis factor. Inflammation can result in a runny nose and will further contribute to the fever. Thus treating just the symptoms alone will not suffice. We need to equip the immune system adequately to ensure the bodies reaction is as efficient and effective as possible.

6

Breathe Summer 2010

Thus taking the complete picture and understanding of the reaction into account and not treating symptoms alone. Complementing and supporting the immune system rather than suppressing it, has the long term effect of improving that system, thus creating an adapted, stronger vitality and immunity. Health however is not just based on immunity. Many factors such as emotional stability, diet, stress levels, exercise, rest and spirituality play a role in one’s health equilibrium. A stronger vitality equates into fewer opportunistic infections, shorter duration of infection and thus overall improved recovery. Homeopathy aims to assist the body in doing what it already knows how to do. Artemisia and Malaria

The Safe, Natural, Effective Solution.

A

bout 40% of the world’s population is at risk of contracting malaria which is resistant to other medicines. Of the 76 countries needing artemisinin-based treatment

today, 69 have adopted the WHO recommendation to use this therapy. As a result of using Artemisia, malaria has greatly disappeared from China. (J Trop Med Public Health,1992,23,762-767). Artemisia afra is a highly aromatic indigenous shrub that has been used for centuries by the African population for a variety of ailments, in particular, malaria. Its Chinese relative, Artemisia annua L, used in Chinese traditional medicine for centuries, is today considered part of the solution where malaria has become resistant to other medicines. Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) have been recommended by WHO (The World Health Organization) since 2001 in all countries where falciparum malaria - the most resistant form of the disease - is endemic. According to the latest research it has an extremely rapid onset of action. It is hydrolyzed in the cell and eliminated rapidly. All the artesiminin compounds induce a rapid reduction of parasites. Artemisia is both effective as a preventative and for treatment of malaria. Tea made out of Artemisia has been used both in China and Africa for centuries without any side effects. Nordman’s Artemisia is made from organically grown and harvested Artemisia plant. Each capsule contains 400mg of Artemisia plant. It contains no additives of fillers. Patients have used Nordman’s Artemisia without any side effects. Y

Vitamins and Your Child

our child’s body is a powerful machine, capable of doing all sorts of things by itself. But one thing it can’t do is make vitamins. That’s where food comes in. Your body is able to get the vitamins it needs from the foods you eat because different foods contain different vitamins. The key is to eat a variety of foods to get an assortment of vitamins. If your child is picky and doesn’t eat a variety of foods they may lack certain vitamins. There are two types of vitamins: fat soluble and water soluble. When you eat foods that contain fat-soluble vitamins, the vitamins are stored in the fat tissues in your body and in your liver. They wait around in body fat until your body needs them. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are all fat-soluble vitamins. Water-soluble vitamins are different. When you eat foods that have water-soluble vitamins, the vitamins don’t get stored as well in your body. Instead, they travel through your bloodstream. Whatever your body doesn’t use is secreted when you urinate. So these kinds of vitamins need to be replaced often because they don’t stick around! These vitamins includes vitamin C and the big group of B vitamins — B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), niacin, B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, B12 (cobalamine), biotin, and pantothenic acid. A good supplement can help.

10

Breathe Summer 2010

Vitamin A This vitamin plays a really big part in eyesight. In addition, it helps you grow properly and aids in healthy skin. Examples of foods containing Vitamin A include liver, orange fruits and vegetables like carrots/sweet potatoes and dark green leafy vegetables like spinach. The B Vitamins There’s more than one B vitamin. Here’s the list: B1, B2, B6, B12, niacin, folic acid, biotin, and pantothenic acid. The B vitamins are important in metabolic activity — this means that they help make energy and set it free when your body needs it. This group of vitamins is also involved in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout your body. Examples of foods are whole grains such as wheat/oats, fish and seafood, poultry and meats, eggs, dairy products like milk and yogurt, leafy green vegetables, beans and peas Vitamin C This vitamin is important for keeping body tissues, such as gums and muscles in good shape. C is also key if you get a cut or wound because it helps you heal. This vitamin also helps your body resist infection. This means that even though you can’t always avoid getting sick, vitamin C makes it a little harder for your body to become infected with an illness.

Vitamin D Vitamin D is the vitamin you need for strong bones. It’s also great for forming strong teeth. Vitamin D even lends a hand to an important mineral — it helps your body absorb the amount of calcium it needs. Food containing vitamin D include fish, egg yolks, liver and fortified cereal. Vitamin E This hard-working vitamin maintains a lot of your body’s tissues, like the ones in your eyes, skin, and liver. It protects your lungs from becoming damaged by polluted air. And it is important for the formation of red blood cells. Foods containing vitamin E include whole grains such as wheat and oats, wheat germ, leafy green vegetables, sardines egg yolks, nuts and seeds Vitamin K Vitamin K is the clotmaster! This is when certain cells in your blood act like glue and stick together at the surface of the cut to help stop the bleeding. Foods include leafy green vegetables, dairy products like milk and yogurt, broccoli and soybean oil Iron Children and adolescents need the mineral iron to prevent anemia. Those most at risk of iron deficiency are infants who are not given extra iron after six months of age (usually in the form of an iron fortified infant cereal), and babies who drink low-iron formula, cow’s milk or goats

milk. Good sources or iron include meats, fish, legumes, and fortified foods, such as breads and cereals. Adolescent girls are also at risk of anemia once they begin having their periods. Calcium Calcium is another important mineral, and it is necessary for healthy bones and teeth. Children who drink milk and eat dairy products, usually get enough calcium from their diet. Food sources include sesame seeds, spinach, baked beans, broccoli, peas and almonds. Fluoride Most children get enough fluoride to build healthy teeth if they are drinking fluoridated water, either from tap water in a city that adds fluoride to the water, or bottled water that also has added fluoride. Since too much fluoride can cause staining of your child’s teeth, talk with your Pediatrician or Dentist before giving your child fluoride supplements. The key is to know your family and child’s diet well in order to ascertain any shortfalls. If you cannot make up that dietary shortfall with foods, where necessary look at a reputable supplement. The Benefits of

Engaging

Your Right Brain

N

o one sets out or intends to have ill health, stress, divorce or financial ruin. So, why does this happen if it was not our intention?

The main problem we face is our inability to identify the real cause of our problems! In most cases we are treating the symptoms and not the cause. We may think we are treating the cause but we are not - if you removed the cause you would not have the problem. Our problems are general stress; lack of energy; anxiety; fear; anger; insomnia; depression; stress syndromes & illnesses such as chronic fatigue; fibromyalgia; polymyalgia; diabetes; asthma; irritable bowel/ spastic colon; ulcers; an inability to achieve goals & many more serious syndromes & diseases. Einstein made a famous quote for a very important reason for us! He said, “No problem can be solved by the same consciousness (thinking) that caused it” Simply put, the majority of our problems, stress & illnesses are created by our left brain conscious mind. The solution will not be found there as Einstein indicated – it will be found by engaging another part of our consciousness, our right brain subconscious mind.

Contact: Stephanie Speets on 074 112 2818 stephanie@nlpdurban.co.za

www.nlpdurban.co.za

NLP is a method of developing the skills and resources required for accessing that part of yourself that already knows the answers you seek. · Personal coaching · Sales & Motivation Training · Staff Development · Team Building

The solution to our problems is that our conscious logical mind has to be in alignment with our subconscious mind & the laws of Quantum Physics, allowing the ‘whole’ of you to transform! We are not traditionally taught this as most ‘treatments’ available today are still based on linear Newtonian physics, treating only the physical body as if you were a machine. Quantum physics shows us that we are connected as physical bodies to our mental thoughts and emotions and to our spiritual self, therefore ‘treating’ the ‘whole’ of you becomes the solution. Essentially we need to learn in a very practical way how to utilize our right brain more, connecting more with our subconscious mind & the collective unconscious as Carl Jung termed it. Science has determined that our left brain can only process 7-15 bits of information per second in a linear way. Our right brain can process billions of bits of information per second as a parallel processor. This is where we have access to infinite possibilities and so it behoves us to utilize our whole brain if we want to experience & live to our full potential. There are a number of exercises which facilitate the process on a physical, mental and emotional level; very simple conscious actions designed to make you stop, refocus and reassess. Some examples would be: 1. Physically, tilting your head back, dropping your shoulders and tilting your pelvis back. 2. Mentally, drop your eyes down (get out of your head) into your heart space. 3. Feeling, connect with your feeling of peace & calm with one breath, let go & trust. Remember, if you have ongoing stress & health problems you are treating the symptoms & not the cause! It’s a

Chain Reaction Your feet are the foundation of your body. They support you when you stand, walk or run. They help protect your spine, bones and soft tissues from damaging stress as you move around. Your feet perform better when all their muscles, arches, and bones are in their ideal stable positions.

H

ealthcare professionals know that alleviating pain in one part of your body often requires treating a different part. The pain you feel in your neck could be caused by a misalignment in your spine that is caused by unbalanced positioning in your feet. Some patients must have these abnormal forces reduced before they can achieve improved spinal function and relief from back and neck pains. The foot is constructed with three arches which, when properly maintained, give exceptional supportive strength. These three arches form a supporting vault that distributes the weight of the entire body. If there is compromise of one arch in the foot, the other arches must compensate and are subject to additional stresses, which usually lead to further compromise. This impacts negatively on the knees, hips, pelvis, and spine. It’s a chain reaction.

The best way to support fallen or dropped arches is by wearing orthotics. Research has shown that orthotics is the most effective and quickest way of improving an arch once it has dropped. Patients with certain types of spinal problems benefit from custom made orthotic support. These devices stabilize the foundation of the pelvis and spine by first addressing structural problems with the feet, thereby reducing abnormal forces and stresses, while enhancing structural and functional relationships. Wearing orthotics inside your shoes is similar to placing a shim beneath the leg of a wobbly table: it adds support to eliminate unwanted motion in the entire structure. By stabilizing and balancing your feet, orthotics enhances your body’s performance and efficiency, reduces pain, and contributes to your total body wellness. Orthotics complements your healthcare professional’s treatment when you stand, walk, and live your active life. Orthotics come in many shapes and sizes and the costs vary considerably, so if you think you might benefit from wearing orthotics please contact a healthcare practitioner who supplies orthotics. The Lemonade Diet

N

ow before you think: “Wonderful news! I can drink lemonade all day and drop a dress size. Allow me to tell you why this is no ordinary lemonade and why this particular diet is far greater than just another get-slim-quick trick. Otherwise know as the Master Cleanser, the Lemonade Diet is primarily aimed at eliminating toxins from the body rather than losing weight (even though this can be expected as detoxification occurs). Originally developed in the 1940s by Naturopath Stanley Burrough, the Master Cleanser is still one of the best known methods for cleaning out your intestinal and colon walls, as well as detoxifying all your organs. Regular meals are replaced with a special lemonade mixture, allowing the hard work of digestion and absorption to be reduced while at the same time, enhancing the processes of cellular waste removal and elimination. It is a simple liquid fast that consists of drinking 6 to 8 glasses a day of lemonade, together with the daily inclusion of a herbal laxative tea and salt water drink. To get that vibrant look for a wedding or big function, one can do the cleanse for a day or even 3! However, for the best results, Burroughs recommends that people go on the diet for at least 10 days, with the maximum duration being 40 days. This particular lemonade provides a broad array of vitamins and minerals (unlike the kind you buy in a can!) concentrated in a mixture of organic lemon juice, grade B maple syrup, water, and a little cayenne pepper. Lemons are considered an alkalising and healing food while the maple syrup is a rich source of minerals, boosting both physical and mental energy. Cayenne pepper increases metabolism and helps break up mucous. It also acts a cleanser for the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems. Probably the most important part of the Master Cleanse is when you decide to come off. You have to go slowly and introduce solid foods gradually. The first and second day after you complete the lemonade diet, you should have only fresh orange juice. Drink as much water in between as required. On the third day have fresh orange juice in the morning. Afternoon lunch should consist of a little fresh and raw fruit/s. At night have a raw vegetable salad. The next morning have a fresh orange juice. Lunch should be a little soup made out of fresh vegetables. Have the same soup for dinner. You are now ready to eat normally! The Lemonade Diet is natural and relatively simple to do. People feel revitalised, with many individuals experiencing drastic and positive changes in their bodies including normal blood pressure, skin elasticity and healthy appearance, faster illness recovery, healthy weight loss and a better digestive process. The diet is unique in that it offers more than just weight reduction, it helps you clean and detoxify your body at the same time.

Healthful and theGarden eating of your life

A

re you an avid gardener? If not, do you think you could at least look after a pot plant? I hope so because looking after our bodies, our one and only vehicle for our lifetime, is not really any more complicated than nurturing a plant. I use this analogy of mine many times – hopefully it doesn’t over simplify the process of maintaining our health but rather helps you to identify with the steps that we can take to improve our health. I draw similarities to with six main features that are always present in a garden that is flourishing and that are also necessary for our good health. This starts with simple ones, plants need hydration [1] and oxygenation [2] otherwise quite simply they die. Then flourishing plants must have nutrients [3] in abundance - not just phosphates which make them grow but compost, (the real stinky kind !), that allows for

nutrient rich fruits to be borne. If these nutrients are lacking they may not bear fruit or flower. If you dig your spade into the earth and study it you will also notice living organisms [4] which are a critical part of the ecology – such as the earthworm which is oxygenating the soil, ants, fungus etc. Often these seemingly harmless organisms can take over and create plagues – such as swarms of locusts, fungal infections etc. And so we too have friendly bacteria (flora) which form an important part of our immunity, but we can be infected with anything from serious viruses to irritating fungal nail infections. Then, most importantly, soil has to have a healthy pH [5] – acid soils do not support healthy plant life, often their leaves turn yellow/green and they don’t bear fruit. Then there is also the concept of ‘detoxification’ [6] of chemicals, and other harmful substances that are mostly of mankind’s invention which need to be considered. I would be hard pressed to say which of these six points are the most important;, they are all vital as you will see. I was motivated into writing these essential steps down as we are beginning to see the truth that our children are the sickest generation ever. In fact, UK doctors stated a few years ago that this is the first generation that will die before their parents (referring to the effects of a the new junk food diet). It is true that chronic ailments usually associated with age are now being seen in children and even babies. I have myself treated children with arthritis, cancer and adult onset (type 2) diabetes. What is happening to the carefree days of youth? When I am asked to give talks on nutrition at schools, I ask everyone to put their hands up and if someone in their family suffers from heart problems, diabetes, allergies, ADD/ADHD, arthritis or joint problems or has cancer, to then put their hands down. With these six complaints usually most of the children’s hands go down. Then everyone looks around and sees only a few hands left up in the school hall – quite something to witness how almost every family has sickness. We are responsible for teaching our communities and especially our children and empowering them to have healthy EQs and healthy bodies to enable us to think, learn and live life to the fullest and fulfill our potential. We are responsible for what goes into our trolleys and our grocery cupboards. We are responsible for our meals. SOME FOODS YOU COULD TRY TO EAT EVERY DAY • Spinach / broccoli. The key is that they are dark green and leafy vegetables. (Lettuce is not dark enough and green beans are not leafy.) They are packed with minerals and immune boosting properties. • Carrots / pumpkin / butternut / mango as they contain carotenoids, important for our eyesight, immune system, heart and protect against cancer. • Tomatoes. Bright red with carotenoids they are also powerful against cancer and an excellent antioxidant source. • Oats. Slow release energy, good fiber for digestion and a source of protein at the same time. Oat bran can also lower cholesterol. • Raw walnuts / almonds. Excellent protein, vitamin E and good fat source. • All beans are good protein sources and low GI carbohydrates. You can also have lentils or chickpeas. • Berries (blueberries, cranberries or strawberries). These contain the most antioxidants of all fruits and help prevent cancer, diabetes and protect the heart. By Megan Coleman

inputs and processes, harmful chemicals, genetically modified organisms, irradiation and other harmful substances and practices are, as far as is possible, excluded from the products we use on a daily basis. Certified products have the logo of a certification agency on products labelled “organic”. By Eli Coehlo

O

rganic certification is your guarantee that the goods you are buying are indeed organic. Unless one is in direct contact with the producer(s) of the ingredients, there is no other way to ascertain whether what you are paying for is the genuine article. Organic in the context of food products means that the ingredients have been grown in accordance with organic farming principles, applying very strict limits on chemical synthetic pesticide and synthetic fertiliser use, livestock antibiotics, food additives and processing aids and other inputs. There is no legal definition of the term “organic” in South Africa. A draft bill regulating the use of the term is yet to be passed by Parliament. Until that happens it’s one of those elastic words (“natural” is another) that can mean just about anything. Certification agencies audit producers, processors and packers to ensure raw materials and methods employed throughout the supply chain are consistent with organic standards. The Lymphatic System and

Your Immunity

T

he lymphatic system consists of 1.5 liters of clear, watery fluid and is responsible for collecting and returning fluids back to the blood. This includes plasma proteins which have leaked from the blood vascular system and foreign substances. This is a vital part of our immune system. Without this system our cardiovascular system would stop functioning. It also plays an important homeostatic role in maintaining the fluid balance between the blood and intestinal fluid within the body. Lymph nodes contain a mesh of tissue (like a sieve) in which lymphocytes are tightly packed, through with harmful substance are filtered out and attacked by lymphocytes and microphages, and fluid returned back to the bloodstream. The movement of lymph fluid is slow and completely dependant on the contractions of skeletal muscles, peristaltic movements, respiratory movements, arteries pulsating or whenever body tissue is compressed, enhancing the flow of lymph fluid. Thus being physically active, proper exercise, breathing and manual massage is most essential in creating a flow of lymph fluid thereby releasing toxic waste. It is important that your blood remain a constant ph of 7.4 and its cousin, the 1.5liters of lymph fluid, should also be the same, a ph of 7.4 (alkaline). But this tends to vary considerably because of our nutritional habits leading to illness and disease. A major factor contributing to lymphatic system overload is weakness in the eliminating organs. Lymph can also pick up toxic waste from an under active colon and carry it to other tissues in the body causing localized infections, aches and pains. To cleanse your lymph you need to cleanse your body, to cleanse your body you need to detoxify your entire digestive system. To maintain a healthy clean system you need to avoid consuming toxic chemical and plastic foods, adopt good nutritional habits, drink plenty of pure filtered water and breathe in and out to maximum capacity. The ph of our bodily fluids needs to be maintained at a slightly alkaline level of about 7.5. This allows the body to maintain itself in a healthy, balanced state. When your PH drops to an unacceptable level, conditions such as toxicity, skin problems, irritable bowel, Candida, weight problems, auto-immune disease and other conditions related to poor immunity including colds and influenza occur. A course of Lymphatic drainage massage treatments taken on a regular basis will also help to facilitate healing especially if you have any illness or even if you have had the flu. This will help prevent reoccurrence because you are strengthening the immune system. Our bodies consist of miraculous systems within systems, dependant and interactive, designed to keep us functioning optimally. All our bodies ask is that we cooperate. By Jyoti Govind

The Truth About

SUGAR!

S

ugar is a sweet and satisfying ingredient and something that most people cannot get through a day without consuming. We put it in our tea or coffee, of which we have a few cups a day. We consume chocolates and sweets, we cook with sugar, we drink fizzy juices that contain sugar and, before we know it, we have taken in FAR too much sugar for one day. Sugar is also, surprisingly, used in making plastics, cement mixing and leather tanning. Sugar has NO nutritional value and is considered an empty carbohydrate. HOW IS SUGAR MADE? When making sugar, the cane is heated and calcium hydroxide (lime) – which is toxic to the body – is added. This is done to remove the ingredients that interfere with the complete processing of sugar. Carbon dioxide, which is another toxin, is then used to remove the lime, of which not all is removed successfully. The sugar turns into a black substance which is heated to remove impurities, then bleached with a white chemical solution. The sugar is then processed 3 times before it’s in the form that we would normally use. THE NOT-SO-SWEET SIDE EFFECTS OF SUGAR Although sugar tastes sweet, the frightening truth about the effects of sugar on our bodies is not all that sweet. It has been proven that sugar has the following negative effects on your body: • Sugar destroys food digestion enzymes in the mouth, stomach, the small intestines and the pancreas. It also reduces the amount of hydrochloric acid needed to break down foods successfully. • Sugar depletes your body of its vitamin B. • Sugar leaches calcium from your hair, bones and teeth. • Sugar leads to weight gain or an inability to lose weight. • Sugar can increase mood swings and irritability. • Sugar leads to cellular death. • Sugar leaves you with food cravings as it is considered empty calories. HOW TO DECREASE YOUR SUGAR INTAKE Although you don’t feel it, many of you reading this article are addicted to sugar. But, before you start to panic, there are many ways to kick this addiction once and for all. Consider putting yourself on a “clean up shop” eating plan where all sugars are cut out completely. This can be tough and may leave you with headaches and various side effects, as your body will crave the sugar. With a high intake of sugar you may have picked up cravings such as caffeine, salts and alcohol, so an excellent plan for you would be one that fully eliminates: sugar, meat, wheat, dairy, salt, caffeine, alcohol and processed foods. Another way of kicking the sugar habit would be to limit your sugar

24

Breathe Summer 2010

intake by cutting out all ADDED sugar – such as the sugar you put into your coffee/tea or use in cooking. This will force you to survive on less sugar and you will therefore successfully wean yourself off it. You should also make sugary things such as dessert, chocolates and cakes a part of a weekly treat and not consume them daily. Following these steps will ensure you are slowly weaned off sugar for GOOD! And lastly you could substitute sugar for stevia, agave nectar or xylitol. These are all natural, healthier alternatives with very few side effects. They are available from most health shops. By Lisa Raleigh

Train Your Brain Change Your Life with Neurofeedback: the revolutionary state of the art brain training

What is Neurofeedback? Neurofeedback, sometimes known as EEG biofeedback or neurotherapy, is a type of therapeutic treatment for your brain. It treats the faulty brain wave activity. During neurofeedback, you learn to train your brain to correct the faulty brain wave activity, resulting in improved day-to-day functioning. You can think of neurofeedback as “brain training.” Like a muscle, your brain gets stronger the more you train it How is neurofeedback done? Sensors are placed on the client’s scalp and ears to record the electrical activity of your brain waves. The brain waves are converted into signals which are sent to the clinician’s computer and a mini QEEG is conducted. This QEEG shows the clinician exactly if the client’s brain is over or underactive on certain points which causes symptoms like depression, anxiety or concentration problems. This helps the clinician to determine where and how to train the client. When starting to train, the client is sitting in front of a second computer that displays the neurofeedback program, i.e. a “game” or “DVD” which is designed

26

Breathe Summer 2010

to give the brain the correct feedback. The sensors are placed on the areas of the brain that need to be improved and the correct brainwave is given to the client. As the client interacts with the program, he or she becomes aware of different brain states or levels of attention. The brain gets used to being in the better, optimal brainwave, the symptoms disappear and the brain learns to go back more easily into the new, desired brainwave. What conditions does neurofeedback help? The conditions which have documented, published evidence of its effectiveness are: • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders • ADHD/ADD (PTSD) • Addiction • Learning Disabilities • Anxiety • Relaxation • Attachment Disorders • Sleep Disorders • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome • Tourette’s Syndrome/Tics • Chronic Pain • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) • Cognitive Decline in Elderly • Teeth grinding (Bruxism) • Depression • Executive Functioning • Migraine (improvement of sport/music • Bipolar Disorder and business performance) • Eating Disorders • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder • Closed head injuries By Andrea Kellerman

Arvigo Techniques of Maya

Abdominal Massage

F

or thousands of years, the original Maya Abdominal Massage was used to treat fertility issues and digestive disorders in Central America, with similar therapies found in other indigenous cultures around the world. The modern-day version of the massage was introduced to the Western world by an American Naprapath, Dr Rosita Arvigo. In the early 80s, Rosita was working as a naprapathic chiropractor, that is, one who focuses on treating the soft tissues supporting the vertebrae and other joints, rather than manipulating the position of the bones and joints themselves. After a chance meeting with one of the last traditional Maya shaman, she was persuaded that his ancient healing techniques would help to treat contemporary medical conditions. Over the next 10 years, she learned all she could and combined these techniques with her naprapathic and herbal training to create the Arvigo Technique of Maya Abdominal Massage. The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage is a non-invasive external massage technique to the abdomen and pelvis that helps to guide to the internal reproductive organs into their proper position, and relieve tension in the diaphragm. The massage improves organ function by releasing physical and emotional congestion, thereby helping to re-establish health in the pelvic region. The core of a woman’s body is her pelvic region, so it makes intuitive sense that the condition of her abdomen and the positioning of her uterus will have an impact on her health and conceiving. Whilst most clients will feel the beneficial effects of the massage after one session, it is important that the techniques are used and practiced at home for two important reasons. First, we all need to feel empowered to influence our own healing and health. It is frustrating and emotionally damaging when other people appear to control our well-being. By taking back responsibility for our health, through positive action, we benefit from both the physical improvements and the emotional tranquility that comes with being “in charge”. Secondly, most medical conditions take a while to leave just as they took time to develop. While the Maya Abdominal Massage may jump start the healing process, a few minutes of self-massage a day is the key to permanently repositioning the uterus and resolving long-term problems – without the need for extended programmes of professional treatment. AgeLOC Vitality

O

ur body’s ability to generate and use energy declines as we start to age. In fact, one of the first signs of aging that people notice is the loss of vitality.

Do you have a great libido and desire? Are you operating at optimum energy levels, with unlimited physical and mental energy? How do you cope with decreased energy, focus and concentration? Perhaps with coffee or energy drinks? Either way the problem with these products is that they create a high and a low. By relying on these substances, you are targeting the symptoms, not the cause. As we get older, the number of mitochondria in each cell drops as does their ability to generate mental, physical and sexual energy. Using AgeLOC science, leading anti-aging genetic experts have identified 52 genes that control the aging process in the mitochondria and have developed AgeLOC Vitality, a natural FDA approved supplement to prevent and restore the aging process. “After two weeks, I feel like I did 15 years ago. I love AgeLOC Vitality” AH “Oh my goodness, those pills are amazing. I have lots of energy and I’ve been getting things done with focus! My libido is through the roof and I did’nt have a problem to start with! Thank you for organizing it for me. Wow! How to stay healthy during the

T

Not-so-Silly Season!

he average person either gets sick on the first week of relaxation or returns from their break in need of another holiday to recover from all the partying and over-indulgence. Your family’s wealth lies in how healthy they are emotionally, mentally and physically. It is time now, before the holiday, to make plans to ‘spring-clean’ your family’s habits:

1

How much sickness has there been over this last year, and how many family members have had recurring illnesses? (Allergies/ colds/bronchial problems/sore throats?) Most of these are allergic responses to something they are consuming. Making a pledge to eliminate or restrict all dairy and animal proteins for up to six months will help reveal the culprit, but if this is too drastic try at least for a few days.

2

Food and behaviour are inextricably linked, so start with reducing how much sugar the family eat in a day - that includes any food out of a wrapper, homemade biscuits, treats, cool drinks, breads, etc. Then find out what the family is drinking: some energy drinks are enough to throw any teenager into the dumps for a few days; a cool drink in a tin has up to 12 teaspoons of sugar and can cause hyperactivity and mood swings.

3

Check your families individual Body Mass Index. If weight is an issue, you, the parents, need to educate yourselves on this subject and share your undertakings on what you are going to do about it. Children look to their parents as their primary role models so you need to take pride in the daily discipline of making good food choices.

YOUR FAMILY HOLIDAY PLAN:

Firstly, get the whole family to buy into the ‘HEALTHY HOLIDAY’ hype. Explain what you want to achieve: a happy, healthy family - and ask everyone to agree to this plan. You can also include a ‘reward’ of their own preference that they will receive at the end of the holiday - not least of which will be the encouraging results they will all see and feel.

1

Take a tape measure and measure each adult member of the family around their hip bones (the widest part of your tummy) and women must also measure around their glutes (the widest part of your buttocks). If you are carrying excess body fat, you want this measurement to decrease and your duty to yourselves is to make sure that this measurement does not increase. If it does, eat less and exercise more until you lose those extra centimetres.

2

Exercise before going to the beach or before starting whatever excursion you are planning for the day. The whole family could walk, run, cycle or swim together, whatever activity is accessible to where you are staying. Participating in a regular, family exercise regime will do wonders for your mental and emotional bonding as a family, and get you all fit to boot.

3

Each adult has a quota of alcohol per week (maximum 5 units for women and 10 for men) and children are allowed one junk food ‘cheat’ per day. Make it fun by keeping a diary of what the family eats every day and try to better your collective record every day. By monitoring your family’s intake, your new healthy regime could be the start of a major lifestyle change which will benefit everyone’s health forever.

30

Breathe Summer 2010

4

When you eat out at a restaurant, make sure it’s an appreciated treat because one dish could contain an entire day’s calories and five days worth of fat. When ordering for the family, remind yourselves that your stomach is no bigger than the size of your fist, so if you eat a larger portion than that, you will feel bloated and the excess will be stored in your body as fat.

5

Try to replace animal proteins with legumes as much as possible and restrict your intake of chicken and fish to no more than four times per week. Red meat is a no-no of course but if you do cheat, make sure your portion is only the size of two match boxes.

6

Keep reminding yourself that even though you are on holiday, your body still needs to workout the way it’s used to. Those extra fats/ carbs/proteins you have consumed will definitely show a few weeks after the holiday. So keep on track!

7 8

Make sure that the whole family takes essential Omega 3 fatty acids each day - vital for the brain and most functions of the body. If you are serious about losing weight and getting fit, you can go on a weight-loss holiday plan. By Noeleen Bridle
