WINNING LETTER Dear Shane
To the Editor I feel that golf is a lazy sport. All that’s involved is swinging the club and bending down to pick up the ball. There’s also the walking in between the holes, but that doesn’t have anything to do with the competition itself. A “sport” is defined as being competitive by nature, and there’s no competing going on whilst walking from one hole to another. Some people even use golf carts to go everywhere. Lazy people who want to play a sport take up golf since it doesn’t involve much activity. However, I suppose that no sport can be considered as being really lazy as long as there is physical activity involved. That part of the definition is what sets “sports” apart from “games” such as poker. So, compare golf to other sports you know of. There’s less physical activity involved. Ping pong is more physically active than golf, because players move their hands at extremely frequent rates and sway back and forth to get optimal swings. In golf, they just hit a ball three to seven times and move onto the next hole, resting their arms in between. It isn’t “lazy” since you’re still getting out and about, but there are much more active sports than golf.
Thank you for writing in. I have to wonder though, whether you have ever played 18-holes of golf? Certainly there are different levels of fitness needed for different sports but whereas many sports are over in say an hour, 18-holes can take several hours to complete. One needs to possess endurance, physical strength and an enormous amount of concentration. Riding in a cart definitely makes it easier but it would be unreasonable to call it lazy. I would encourage you and anyone out there who hasn’t yet played the game to visit your local driving range. Spend an hour just hitting balls and see how you feel? Gary Player, Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler, Billy Horschel to name but a few are some of the fittest guys around. Golf is undoubtedly not a lazy sport but I do agree that there is misconception amongst some of those who have not played the game before that it is. Regards

I used to play the guitar, I have a brown belt in karate, I don’t eat spicy food, I played number one for my school’s tennis team, I listen to music 24/7. 6. What is currently on your bucket list? I would like to make the teams for the Toyota Junior World Cup and represent South Africa in the 2018 Espirito Santo at the World Amateur Team Championships. I still want to take a whole month and explore Europe. I want to own my own golf course, and I want to play at Augusta National. 7. Do you set yourself goals ? I do set myself goals and my goal for 2017 is to achieve national colours representing SA. 8. Who are your role models? My parents are my greatest role models because they are dedicated, loving and accepting parents and I aspire to be just like them

PGA of SA drives sustainable golf message

T
he PGA of South Africa’s drive to give its member professionals access to cutting-edge global information in the game saw the association host a series of sustainability workshops recently in partnership with the Royal and Ancient and the Club Management Association of South Africa (CMASA). The Golf Environment Organisation (GEO) SA Sustainability Workshops took place around the country and focused on equipping turf grass managers, club managers and PGA professionals with the latest information around golf course sustainability, which has taken on a heightened focus in South Africa in light of the current drought conditions.
According to Isaac, the PGA of South Africa, CMASA and South African golf clubs are at the forefront of a global trend to become more water wise. “I think golf courses around the world are a lot more proactive around the water issue than people might give them credit for. Areas such as South Africa, Australia and Southern Europe are water-scarce areas and the golf industry, just like other industries, is aware of this and is taking measures.”
The workshops also included industry specific sustainability information from Toro and Syngenta.
Ivano Ficalbi, Chief Executive of the PGA of South Africa, noted that, “The golf club industry is already implementing so many good projects, however this information is not shared well enough. But through the GEO On-Course platform, good practice reporting will be that much easier”.
Steve Isaac, the Director for Sustainability at the R&A, was a key speaker at the workshops and said he was impressed with the unified front in South African golf to become more sustainable as an industry.
Stellenbosch Golf Club in the Western Cape confirmed that it has cut its daily water requirement from 1.5 million litres on a normal summer evening to 700 000 litres under the current water restrictions.
“It struck me how everyone in South Africa involved in golf courses and the management thereof is working together to try and find solutions,” he said.
And Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club estimates it has reduced its water need by up to 30%.
“What I noticed immediately in South Africa, especially in the Cape, is how golf courses have adapted to using alternative sources of water to drinking water.”

But Isaac said golf clubs are merely playing their part in an issue that is not just limited to these facilities. “A lot of times the problem isn’t just golf’s problem but society’s problem, particularly around old cities and places where the infrastructure isn’t there to provide the recycled water that golf could use.”

P
utting has created and destroyed many professional careers, it also ruins many a club golfers Saturday money games. Golfers will make a number of putts during their pre-round warm-up, brushing them into the cup with ease from all around the hole. This seemingly simple task of knocking a little round white ball into a hole three times larger than the ball, sometimes only inches away from the hole, quickly becomes a fearful, stressful, anxious and emotional task when stepping over the first putt on the first green. Our minds become filled with thoughts of “Don’t miss it”, “Don’t pull it”, “Don’t push it”, “Don’t hit it too hard” or “Don’t three putt”, all thoughts that are primarily generated from the fear of missing the putt, an emotion not previously felt on the practice green.

Attempts of removing these thoughts from our minds only generally compound them, to think about not thinking about missing the putt will have the same adverse effects as thinking about missing the putt. As the round goes on and we have missed a few putts, these thoughts become more prevalent and influential on our stroke and performance. The ideal state over the ball would be one with a quiet mind, free of the anxiety and emotion of the outcome of the putt. In order to get into this positive and clear-minded state we must take our focus away from the outcome, distracting ourselves by focusing on something more neutral and positive. An excellent technique to quieten the mind over the ball is to focus your eyes on a specific spot on the ball, this may be a dimple, a scuff mark or a letter in the branding of the ball. I would strongly suggest using a

tuition & instruction marker to draw a circle, followed by a dot in the centre of the circle, forcing yourself to focus on that dot as your last mental process before taking the putter back. Your mental energy is now being used by directing your focus to the dot, removing any negative, obscure thoughts you previously had and freeing your mind up to more effectively perform the stroke.

Most diverse field ever entered for 2017 Canon South Africa Disabled Golf Open
T
he 19th edition of the Canon South Africa Disabled Golf Open boasts the most diverse field of entrants since the inception of the competition by the South African Disabled Golf Association (SADGA) 19 years ago. Over 80 local and international golfers have confirmed their participation in the 2017 Canon South Africa Disabled Golf Open.
Travelling to South Africa to compete are Bob MacDermott (Canada); Martin Williams (Wales); Shaun Bakker (United Kingdom); George Mecs (France), Cian Arthurs (Ireland) and Manuel De Los Santos amongst others. De Los Santos, a regular competitor in Canon South Africa’s annual PRO Golf Series, hails from the Dominican Republic and since losing his leg in a vehicle accident in 2003, South Africans have historically dominated the tour- has won many international events for disabled golfers in Europe. In 2007, he became the first nament, with Ben van Zyl winning the event from 1998 to 2003; Pieter Jansen in 2004; Nico Wentzel in amputee to play in the French Golf Grand prix 2008; Iglin Grobblaar in 2009 and 2010; and Daniel alongside high level able bodied Amateur golfers. These very talented golfers will convene for the Slabbert from 2011 to 2013, and again in 2015.

Competition will indeed be stiff, with some of the world’s very best golfers with disabilities competing. The field is extremely diverse, with players of all ages with various disabilities, from around the world. We have competitors as young as 12 competing this year,” says Reinard Schuhknecht, Brand Ambassador for the 2017 Canon South African Disabled Golf Open and widely considered one of South Africa’s best disabled golfers. The Canon South Africa Disabled Golf Open is hosted annually by SADGA, offering a platform for disabled golfers to pit their skills against some of the best in the world in a credible competition that has at its heart the goal to inspire and unite players with varying disabilities, and acknowledge their achievements. The tournament attracts the world’s top golfers with disabilities. In 2016, 30% of the field boasted single figure handicaps and more than half of the competitors have handicaps of 18 or lower. The maximum handicap for men and ladies is 36. Disabled golfers with handicaps of 18 and under will play 54 holes, medal stroke play while those with handicaps of between 19 and 36 will play 54 holes stableford. The overall Champion Golfer will be the player achieving the lowest cumulative gross score over the 54 holes. Deaf golfers with handicaps of 9 and under will play 54 holes medal stroke play while those with handicaps of 10 and over will play 54 holes stableford. The overall Deaf Champion Golfer will be the player achieving the lowest cumulative gross score over the 54 holes in the deaf division. Canon South Africa became the official sponsor of the tournament this year. However, Canon SA’s association with SADGA stems back to 2001 when the company sponsored a small prize for a golf tournament. Since then, its involvement with SADGA has continued to grow, with its sponsor-

ship focusing on SADGA’s First Swing initiative, a development programme for children with disabilities. The primary focus of the programme is on rehabilitation and psychological development of disabled children. It is operational in 35 schools across the country, with some 750 children benefitting every week. Young players who have risen through the ranks of the First Swing Programme will be competing in the 2017 Canon South Africa Disabled Golf Open. They include 16 year old Enrique van Wyk who was born with a physical disability condition and Grade 11 learner, Jabu (Cameron) Price Moor, whose arm was paralysed in a car accident when he was one year old. These are children who have shown dedication, commitment and passion to learn, to try, and to never give up on their dreams of playing a sport Gian de Valliers, Managing Director at Canon SA, says: “Over the years, our support for SADGA has evolved to become something of a passion. We are proud to take our support of SADGA to the next level as the proud, official sponsor of the South African Disabled Golf Open.” SADGA is recognised and respected for opening up a world of world of interaction, opportunities and competition for golfers with disabilities. rom the opening tee shot of his final round at the 2017 Masters, Sergio Garcia looked like a man ready to win his first major – no matter that this attempt at Augusta National was the 74th consecutive time the outrageously talented Spaniard was trying. And, in the end, that it took some cast-iron nerves as well as some of the best shot-making you’ll ever see for Garcia to overcome the steely determination of Justin Rose. There was no sign of the histrionics we have seen from Garcia over the years, and he didn’t even have to try some of the seemingly impossible escapes which have become something of a Spanish trademark in golf. And he was only able to overcome Rose after the first hole of a sudden-death play-off. “Justin wasn’t making it easy,” said Garcia. “He was playing extremely well. But I knew what I was capable of doing, and I believed that I could do it. It’s been an amazing week, and I’m going to enjoy it for the rest of my life.” For Rose, the defeat will smart for a while, but the man who tamed Merion for his

US Open win in 2013 will be back. “It’s going to sting for sure,” he said. “But you know, I really feel like this is a tournament that I can still go on to win. I’d like to win three or four green jackets, but one would be enough, you know. I just want to win here.” For Garcia, the vindication was palpable. It was present in the words Rose murmured in his ear as the embraced afterwards. “He said, ‘Nobody deserves it more than you do,’” said Garcia. “He said, ‘I’m very happy for you. W
ith the country’s economy seeming uncertain with cabinet reshuffles and ministers losing their jobs, one can’t help to think what on earth is going to happen next in our country? Who would’ve thought that dagga could be legalised or that we would once again become downgraded to junk status. However, despite the uncertainty of the future, one thing we can gain from all of this is that, as a result, we become stronger and more versatile. The golfing industry, that has only just seemed to recover from the previous recession, may just find themselves in the same position again since forecasts are not looking particularly great. The “luxury” sectors, like the golfing industry, often feels the biggest knock since as an economic crises hits, people cut back and save and we lose rounds. There are a few key areas that the golfing industry has incorporated in order to survive and attract more golfers whilst the economy walks on thin ice. Since there are many facets to running these vulnerable businesses in tough times like these, clubs can survive when they begin thinking out of the box. Recession came as a wakeup call for many businesses and relying on old standard methods of attracting more customers had to come to an end. Certain key areas within the club had to be addressed and adjusted to accommodate the tough times that lay ahead. Some clubs even needed to redo their vision statements to reinstate confidence within the clubs roots. New strategic planning was imperative to assist the club in creating the necessary turnover to survive the tough times

lying ahead and changes began happening in and around golf clubs.
Marketing/advertising:
Marketing and advertising has become a lot more popular in the industry. It is almost as if there was a sudden spike within the industry to promote and create brand awareness. There has been a change from advertising every now and then, to creating a position within the club to be able to have someone on board full time focusing on these various channels. This has become the new backbone for club income, and relying merely on word of mouth, club loyalty and tradition has become a thing from the past. Certain platforms have essentially maximised brand exposure and led to a massive contribution towards income:

Interacting with the members on the latest developments at the club via posters or a club newsletter is also beneficial since it ultimately creates a sense of importance and belonging within the club. Social media is another massive platform of communicating with members. Facebook, twitter and Instagram is a cheap and unique way of establishing a communication link between the member and club on what the latest club developments might be. Magazines and Newspapers might be costly but is an excellent way to reach determined and dedicated golfers. It also has the ability to provide club exposure to a large number of potential customers. On site marketing opportunities can provide some much needed extra income to a club. Many courses have moved in this direction. Advertising is now often available in certain areas like on golf carts, alongside tee boxes and on the driving range bay dividers. Tour competitions bring a whole new level of exposure to the club. Getting TV coverage or a newspaper article regarding the competition or tour provides valuable added exposure for the club.
Product quality:
Having a quality product is by far the most important aspect of growing a returning clientele base and therefore investment. It’s vital if you wish to keep your current members supporting your club. It’s been proven that by creating a product of absolute quality that can be given at an affordable rate, enhances not just sales but also creates a feeling of wealth among the majority of golfers that fall under the middle class income range. Product quality can be broken up in a few sectors within the club: General club appearance should be seen as the single most important factor of these abovementioned points. A first impression truly does have a lasting memory. A club that takes pride in its appearance, with lush lawns, a clubhouse that is well looked after and a manicured entrance, will give off the impression that the club not only cares about its facility, but it also cares about your experience at the club. A visit to such a club could result in convincing you to join that club or switch from your current club.
Social events like family fun days, potjie competitions, 5-10 km runs, an occasional arts and craft market or jazz festival can also assist in attracting a diverse potential clientele and creates additional sales and income for the club.
Food and beverages can do some damage to the club if it is of a poor quality. It is seen as one of the attractions for golfers that wish to grab a bite to eat after or during their game. There is not much better, besides a hole in one, than getting a delicious, well-presented burger and chips for R 20 less than the restaurant you love down the road. Fresh produce and healthy food options included in the menu selection also assists in keeping the standard of excellence.
Exposure, exposure, exposure is the key route that clubs have been moving in. Using a different variety of advertising and marketing platforms can create the ideal scenario of a strong membership base and better turnover opportunities for the month as well as financial year.
Attention to detail plays a vital role in all the other sections and also contributes to attracting more potential members and visitors to the club. From general housekeeping on the course to well-maintained and clean locker rooms, can go a long way with the member. Wi-Fi, gadgets and the latest tech-

Many clubs do not have the financial backing to be able to roll out a red carpet for every client that arrives at the club but friendly/helpful staff and a neatly maintained facility can provide what every golfer would like to be associated too. The Golf Course is the point of attraction and what some clubs fail to do is invest back into the course that essentially supplies the income of the club. Unnecessary expenses within the club can usually be seen as more of a priority and all focus threatens to be lost on what the current quality/state of the course is. Keeping the main attraction (golf course) in an excellent condition at all times will create happy customers, and a happy customer comes back!

Referring back to my previous article you will know that salaries are one of the highest expenses in any business. Therefore making sure structures and work principles gather enough attention to satisfy execution in each designated job area has become of the highest importance. When times get tough, work performance and execution of work gets monitored well and changes can happen. Room for incompetency usually goes out the window and rearranging of programs/structures occurs. Here are a few key areas clubs focus on to minimise salary expenses and to generate more income. Programs and structures is where most clubs have gone and reshuffled their original structures to a more hands on approach. Whatever structure there was years ago has changed and sometimes it is hard as a lot of retrenchment goes with these changes and sometimes more responsibilities gets passed down to the remaining team. Since the recession era, job titles have changed and contracts adapted so that staff can be more

universal than before. This means that some General Managers are often seen as the golf director as well, or the General Manager becomes the course Manager too. This results in fewer expenses on salaries and has helped with savings. Investing in Staff education and learning programs in the industry. Education is key, and by knowing what you sell or how to improve the club can save and add value to the product. The return on what the clubs get by investing in education enhances new innovative ideas that eventually come around in the form of income. Education in: • Healthier foods in the kitchen • Introducing boot camps on the course • New improved Marketing techniques • Green keeping courses Can all add value to the different products the club tries to sell. Diversity in the form of what type of personality to attract to the club has had a major income effect since the focus moved to youth development and more social crowds. By hosting different types of events, a bigger chance of income can be established. Things like wine tastings, family fun days, kids play areas, quiz nights and much more have come to the golfing scene. This has all contributed to a much more sustainable outlook for the future. Gone are the days of catering for just golf. Clubs of today have become more diverse, a place that the entire family can enjoy, a place that feels like home. YOUR GOLF CLUB.

McClatchie romps to 7-shot Big Easy win
H
e probably sealed the deal with three birdies in the opening nine at Killarney GC, but there was more to amateur Kyle McClatchie’s win in the season-opening Sunshine Big Easy Tour event there. He started the day with a four-stroke edge over the other amateur in the field, Slade Pickering, and, despite bogeys on 10 and 13, he signed for a three-under 67 to finish up with a seven-stroke margin over Maritz Wessels, who carded the low round of that day with a four-under 66. “I wouldn’t say it was easy,” said McClatchie. “It’s always tough out there. I would have said yesterday was easy but today I had to grind it out. So I’m pretty chuffed with the win. I played pretty nicely on both days.

“Those three birdies ahead of the turn were kind of a confidence-booster more than anything else. I knew that it was still kind of tight-ish before the ninth, so it was very nice to get those three birdies in and they made the difference in the end. “I wanted to finish 10-under – I wanted to be in double figures – so it was important to make the birdie on 15 and it was a nice bonus to sink that putt on 18 for another.” McClatchie finished in a share of second behind Pieter Kruger in last year’s Kempton Park leg of the Big Easy series, so he was keen for a win – and it has boosted his confidence ahead of a six-week stint playing amateur golf in the UK.

Ritchie wins Zimbabwe Open
J
C Ritchie saw off Trevor Fisher Jnr. on the second play-off hole at Royal Harare GC to win the 2017 Zimbabwe Open.
After being seven-over-par after his first seven holes of the tournament, Ritchie bounced back with 29 birdies to tie Fisher on 16-under-par for the week. “I actually started the week off quite rough. I was seven-over-par after seven holes. I made that eagle-two on the ninth and that’s where it turned around for me,” explained Ritchie. Ritchie sealed the dramatic win with a right to left 13-foot putt on the 18th green, which epitomised his putting display during the week. “That was unreal golf. I really enjoyed it and never really felt like I was out of contention. It was one

of the best putting expositions I’ve had in my entire life,” he said. Fisher started his final round strongly, however three bogeys in a row at the turn saw his three-shot lead disappear. An eagle at the par-five 16th saw him shoot back into a twoshot lead, but a double-bogey on the 17th made for a play-off with Ritchie. “I felt last night that 63 today would definitely win by one. I didn’t expect Fish to make double on the 17th, he was playing fantastic golf. When I got onto 15 tee box I knew I needed three more [birdies]. I hit a great second shot into 16 and lipped out for eagle,” Ritchie said. The win is his first on the Sunshine Tour and it promises to set up a good run of form for the remainder of the season.

Where were you born and which schools did you attend? I was born in Mossel Bay and went to Swellenddam Primary and High School.

You played a lot of rugby for the Sharks but which province did you first represent? I played for the Boland Cavaliers for 4 years while studying at The Boland Teachers College in Wellington.

You were known as a brilliant finisher with a high test try per match ratio. To put you on the spot, who is the greatest fullback, centre & wing to ever have played the game? Fullback, wing, center and flyhalf would all be the same guy, Joe Roff, an Australian. He had a fantastic rugby brain but more importantly a great guy to have a beer with after the game.
You played for the Ospreys in Wales and you had a brief stint with Ulster in Ireland, what was that experience like? It was a great experience and I loved every moment of it. Lovely, friendly people and the rugby was hard, intense and fast but off the field you were just a `normal ` person like everyone else.

What do you make of the new rules that have come into the game, is rugby becoming over- reffed? Yes and no. I understand and have sympathy with regards to safety especially at scrum time but we need to have a look at the ball in the air and contesting for it along with the high tackle and contact to the head and shoulder area.

You are involved with the SA Rugby Legends Association, what is your role there and what do you guys do? We run and implement the biggest rugby development programme in high schools called VUKA Rugby for non-traditional rugby schools and also previous Model C schools where rugby is no longer played. We also host an annual national rugby tournament the Carfind.co.za Iqhawe week. Besides that we have a lot of fun

You played at fullback, centre and wing, what was your favourite position? Fullback for sure. On debut for the Springboks against Ireland (13th June 1998 in Bloemfontein) you scored four tries. Not a bad start! What other highlights come to mind? 1st Test for the Boks as mentioned will always be special. All the finals were great, even the ones we`ve lost but the test against All Blacks in 1998 at Kings Park stands out.

I believe that you are into mountain biking, this is a very popular sport. What makes it so special? Ex-rugby players particularly love this sport. They can still be competitive and after years of pro rugby you still get some some scars and battle wounds. Riding a bike is a lot more forgiving than running providing that you stay on the bike.

Have you had any embarrassing moments whilst playing golf? Yes, I broke a window once at one of the homes at Mt Edgecombe. Very embarrassing bearing in mind how far the house was positioned from the course.

Do you play with some of the other rugby legends and if so is there fierce competition between you all? There is always a good rivalry but my golf is shaky at the best of times so I seldom beat the likes of Butch, Justin Swart or Wayne Fyvie.

‘Freshie’ doesn’t stop Bekker victory in Lusaka

e had a fresh air on the fourth, but Oliver Bekker kept plugging away on The final day and a birdie on the 17th at Lusaka GC sealed the deal for him in the Zambia Sugar Open. He carded a one-under-par 72 at to come away with his fifth Sunshine Tour victory in six years, and he had to hold off a determined Jared Harvey, who came with a late run and finished in second place, two shots back on 17-under for the tournament. Although Bekker finished on a total of 19-under-par for the tournament, he struggled on the final day, carding two bogeys and one double-bogey mixed with five birdies. “I hit my ball behind a tree on the fourth,” said Bekker. “I tried to backhand it out, but I missed

it completely. Luckily, I made birdies at the fifth and the sixth to pull things back. “I never really got it going. I made a couple of good putts for birdie, and I had a fresh air, I had some snap hooks…a bit of everything today. The nerves were definitely there and I’m just happy I pulled it off,” he said after his round.

Majestic Mistry clinches SA Amateur Stroke victory

South Africa’s top ranked Kajal Mistry held her nerve to claim the Sanlam South African Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship last month. The 15-year-old from Randpark GC lived up to her top billing as a future world beater when she opened up a five shot lead on the field in the second round, but Mistry had to clamp down on the nerves over the closing stretch at the Wanderers GC to seal the biggest achievement of her short career. Mistry made a strong statement with a birdie-birdie start, but she let playing partners Woo-Ju Son and Symone Henriques in the door with four bogeys. She hung tough over the last couple of holes, though and signed for a two over 74 for a one shot triumph on fourunder-par 212. “I am so stoked right now,” said Mistry. “It feels like I’ve conquered Kilimanjaro. First and foremost, I want to thank Sanlam and Gary van Loggerenberg on behalf of all the amateurs. We owe you a great debt of gratitude for the sponsorship and your continued commitment to grow and support women’s amateur golf.

Fabulous Frade triumphs at Westlake
N
icholaus Frade from Gauteng North finally got the putter going and it paid off with a provincial breakthrough in the Western Province Amateur last month. Organisers were forced to reduce the Stroke Play Qualifier at Westlake GC to 54-holes after a lengthy suspension for inclement weather and the promising young talent stepped into the winner’s circle with a fabulous come-from-behind performance in the third round. It was definitely a week to savour for the 20-year-old from Centurion CC, whose previous best performance on the Open Amateur circuit this season was a tie for 38th at the Northern Amateur Qualifier in March. Frade outshone some of the country’s leading lights with rounds of 71, 67 and 69 to close out a two stroke victory over former number one ranked Marco Steyn from Modderfontein GC. Overnight leader Matt Saulez from KwaZulu-Natal had to settle for third alongside yet with another former number one, Kyle McClatchie from Ekurhuleni. Frade began the third round two strokes off the pace from Saulez and tied for third with reigning Sanlam SA Amateur champion Christo Lamprecht and fellow Southern Cape golfer Caylum Boon. “I holed a huge putt at the first hole for birdie that set the tone for the round,” said Frade.

“The putt was at least 30 feet and it really lifted my spirits to see the ball disappear. I’ve been striking the ball so beautifully all season, but the putter has let me down in every tournament. Putting was really the difference this week, because holing putts meant I kept the big numbers off my card.” The second year B.Com Marketing Management student was over the moon to learn that his threeday total of nine-under-par 209 rocketed him to 38th in the South African Golf Association’s Open Amateur Rankings, a jump worth more than 70 spots. “This is the best news ever,” said the delighted champion. “I finally got the putter going and I just hope I can keep it hot in the upcoming tournaments, because now I have a realistic chance to shoot for the Premier SA Inter-Provincial team.”

Central Gauteng takes SA Senior IPT glory
W
estern Province and Gauteng North did everything possible to spoil Central Gauteng’s party, but they could not stop the Lions from roaring to a successful title defence in the 30th South African Senior Inter-Provincial in Knysna last month.
“Every guy on the team had a job to do and they are the kind of players any manager would kill for. They never, ever give up. They fight until the last drop of blood to get us a win. When one player is struggling, three more step it up.”
The 2016 champions put an exclamation mark on an unbeaten run in this year’s A-Division contest when they drew 6-all in two tightly contested skirmishes against both teams.
“I am incredibly proud of this team’s achievement. Like I said, it’s a team effort. That is the philosophy Andy (Truluck) and I drill into all our players. There is a time when you play for yourself, but this is the week where everything you do is for your team-mate. Their commitment to each other was the key to their success here in Knysna. There were no heroes here this week; just eight guys who batted for each other.”
Central Gauteng finished the week at the top of the pile with 12 points. “We started the final round with a healthy cushion and a lot of guys already came to congratulate us after the third round, but the victory is never in the bag for us until the final putt drops,” said Central Gauteng manager Jaco du Plessis. The defending champions began the final charge to victory with a three point advantage over Western Province and they were four points up on Gauteng North. “It didn’t shock me when we were 1.5 – 2.5 down against Province after the foursomes,” Du Plessis said. “The senior circuit is highly competitive and you can never get complacent in this format, but I had a lot of faith in our players.

Our mystery golfer was born on February 13th 1918 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and died on September 6th 2006. She was a founding member and then leading player on the LPGA Tour during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. With 15 major title wins she has the all-time record for most major wins by a female golfer. She expressed an interest in football at an early age and at one point, played quarterback on a local team however her parents suggested that she try golf and at the age of 13 she took up the game. During World War II she was a lieutenant in the Marines. In 1963, she was voted the recipient of the Bob Jones Award, the highest honour given by the United States Golf Association in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf. When the LPGA was officially started in 1950, she was one of the 13 founding members and held a leadership position as the association’s first president. USGA, R&A INTRODUCE NEW RULES REGARDING REVIEW
R
ecently Lexi Thompson lost in a playoff at the ANA Inspiration -- the LPGA’s first Major of the season.
After completing the 12th hole in her final round, Thompson was informed that she was receiving a four-stroke penalty for an infraction that occurred a day earlier in the third round. Thompson improperly replaced her marked ball -- on a 15-inch putt -- and was assessed

a two-shot penalty for not returning the ball to its original spot. She was then assessed an additional two-stroke penalty for signing for an incorrect score. A fan emailed the LPGA to make officials aware of the infraction the day of the final round and after review, informed Thompson. The decision sent social media abuzz, questioning: 1. Whether viewers should be allowed to call in violations; 2. How much time should

be allowed to pass between an unknown infraction and when it’s enforced; and 3. Are these call-in/email infractions fair to the top players who receive most of the television coverage? Under the new rules, call-ins will still be allowed, but players who receive the bulk of the TV time will not be held to a higher standard than the rest of the field. For example, “a player who unknowingly touches a few grains of sand in taking a backswing with a club in a bunker when making a stroke.” Which is what happened to Anna Nordqvist at the U.S. Women’s Open Under the new rule, “If the committee concludes that such facts could not reasonably have been seen with the naked eye and the player was not otherwise aware of the potential breach, the player will be deemed not to have breached the Rules, even when video technology shows otherwise. This is an extension of the provision on ball-at-rest-moved cases, which was introduced in 2014.” The second rule comes into play when a player determines a spot, point, position, line, area, distance or other location in applying the Rules, and “recognizes that a player should not be held to the degree of precision that can sometimes be provided by video technology. Examples include determining the nearest point of relief or replacing a lifted ball.” That one applies to Thompson. “So long as the player does what can reason-

ably be expected under the circumstances to make an accurate determination, the player’s reasonable judgment will be accepted, even if later shown to be inaccurate by the use of video evidence,” according to the press release issued by the USGA and R&A.

Old Gentlemans Challenge
A young man, who was an avid golfer, found himself with a few hours to spare one afternoon. He figured if he hurried and played very fast, he could get in 9 holes before he had to head home. Just as he was about to tee off, an old gentleman shuffled onto the tee and asked if he could accompany the young man. Not being able to say no, he allowed the old gent to join him. To his surprise, the old man played fairly quickly. He didn’t hit the ball far, but plodded along consistently and didn’t waste much time. Finally, they reached the 9th fairway and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree directly between his ball and the green. After the young man spent several minutes debating how to hit the shot, the old man said, “You know, when I was your age I’d hit the ball right over that tree.” With that challenge placed before him, the youngster swung hard and hit the ball, which smacked solidly into the tree and dropped to

the ground about one foot from where it had originally lay. The old man remarked, “Of course, when I was your age that pine tree was only 3 feet tall.”
Blind Firefighters
A priest, a doctor, and a lawyer were stuck behind a particularly slow group of golfers. After three holes, they complained to the greens keeper. “Sorry guys. That’s a group of blind firefighters,” the man explained. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from burning down last year, so we let them play here any time for free.” “That’s so sad,” the priest said, “I’ll say a prayer for them tonight.” “Good idea” the doctor agreed. “I’m going to contact my ophthalmologist friend and see if there’s anything he can do for them.” The lawyer said, “So, why can’t they play at night?”
