WINNING LETTER To the Editor
Lately I’ve been doing allot of walking, which was brought on by my car deciding to break down after almost 200 000km. While we still have my better half’s car in the family, she’s at work during the day (I work from home) so my legs are my primary mode of transportation during the week. Whilst walking to the post office on my lunch break yesterday (about 1.5km) I realized that there are things along that route that I had never noticed before - even though I have driven that same route many, many times.

In short, walking allows you to slow down and notice interesting things that you would never see zooming by in a car - and the same is true on the golf course. In addition to improving your game and getting exercise, you have more time on your hands to appreciate nature. After all, the great outdoors is perhaps among the most rewarding aspect of golf.
This reminded me about why I like walking the Regards golf course instead of taking a cart. Last year, Stewart Dyer I took a cart most of the time. This was a deviation from my normal routine, as I normally walk the course. Pro golfer Coetzee chips in for orphanage
G
eorge Coetzee latest fans is an orphanage in Atteridgeville.
A golf day arranged by Coetzee and his family at Pretoria CC helped to raise R450 000, which he donated to the orphanage to help them buy the house they were using. “The house they were in was going to be sold, so with my mother and girlfriend driving it, we helped them buy it. All of the funds raised from our golf day went to that orphanage. It was a good cause and a great success. A lot of good people chipped in to help,” Coetzee said. Coetzee has made it his priority to target a worthy charity every year and host a golf day to raise funds.

“We’re planning on doing another fundraiser later in the year. You obviously hear about a lot of people that don’t have everything they need – food, water, a house. You try and do your best and give back to the community as best you can.” Coetzee says that giving back in this way helps him to find more balance in his golf career. “Sometimes it’s good to know that I’m not just playing golf for myself and that I’m working towards helping other people. I don’t want to sound too deep or anything, but it’s kind of fed my soul a bit. “I’m just doing little things for little communities and trying to help out where you see people need help. I’m trying to do my little bit to make it easier for some of the people in this country.”

It doesn’t have to be perfect
I
s there such a thing as the perfect swing? Does the swing make the champion? If so, how do we explain Jim Furyk, Dustin Johnson or Jordan Spieth? Throughout the history of golf there have been many wonderful swingers of the golf club, those who have achieved textbook positions and swung with sublime grace. Many of these players have not become champions, some never even come close. On the other hand, some of the greatest champions have adopted unorthodox methods of

swinging the club, and have still been able to ‘get the job done’ under the severest of pressure. Jim Furyk is the obvious modern day example of this. The two players that Jack Nicklaus describes as the greatest ball strikers ever, Ben Hogan and Lee Trevino, both developed swings that could be described as having faults. Hogan had a weak grip, a flat swing plane, was close to a reverse pivot and aligned his feet and shoulders in different directions. Trevino had a very strong grip and aimed his body way left of his target. Nicklaus himself is described by purists as having won 18 majors despite his swing, not because of it.

tuition & instruction you have an effective swing. Add a great short game and a winning mentality and you have the makings of a champion. The moral of the story is, what you do at impact is the all-important factor in ball striking. Those who have unorthodox positions elsewhere in the swing make compensations to achieve the desired result. If this is ingrained and trusted it can be just as effective as a textbook swing. Make controlling the club through impact your main focus and you too may find that you can live with a few faults and still play winning golf.
Another modern day example is current world number 1 Dustin Johnson, who has an extremely shut clubface at the top of the backswing, which should encourage a hook. Jordan Speith has a weak, palmy grip and chicken wings his left arm through impact.

So what does this tell us about the importance of perfection in the swing? Quite clearly it is not essential for greatness. So what makes an effective swing? Firstly the 5 Ball Flight Laws control the golf ball; •

The SA Women’s Open (synonymous with the KZN South Coast)
T
This 54-hole tournament, sanctioned by the WPGA of South Africa, carried a purse of R250 000 and was staged at San Lameer Country Club from 26 – 28 January. It was the third counting event for the 2017 Chase to the Investec Cup for Ladies after the SuperSport Ladies Challenge and SA Women’s Masters. South African Lee-Anne Pace won the tournament and in lifting the trophy, wrote her name in South African golfing annals as the first player to celebrate three successive victories in the national championship. Pace claimed her first title in 2014 and joined former champions Brenda Lunsford and Barbara Pestana as a double winner with back-to-back victories on the 2016 Sunshine Ladies Tour. Pace’s third feat sees her tie Mandy Adamson, who won the championship in 1995, 1997 and 2002, and the 10-time Sunshine Ladies Tour champion is already thinking about next year. “If nothing gets in the way, I’ll see you all back here at San Lameer to go for number four,” said Pace. “On a serious note, there is one big champion of the SA Women’s’ Open that we have to thank. On behalf of all the players, I want to applaud Mayor Nomusa Mqwebu and the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality. They

have stuck by us for the last five years and they have given us a fantastic championship every year.” Mqwebu said the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality is proud to have been a key facilitator in the resurgence in women’s professional golf in South Africa. “The SA Women’s Open has become a very significant attraction in this region from an economic, tourism and sport development point of view since we first partnered with World Sports Promotions to bring back the SA Women’s Open to the national schedule in 2012,” Councillor Mqwebu said. “This championship showcases the spectacular beauty of the South Coast and draws visitors to our shores, but it also plays a very important role in sparking the interest and shaping the future of our rising young golf talent. Our involvement with the SA Women’s Open directly led to the establishment of the Mayoral Golf Academy, where we introduce young girls from all over the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality district to the game of golf”. Tournament promoter Lesley Copeman, of World Sports Promotions commented“We would also like to extend our gratitude to Meyer du Toit and Pine Pienaar from San Lameer Country Club for hosting the SA Women’s Open for a third successive year.”

What is a Blue Flag Beach? Conceived in France in 1985, the Blue Flag programme is a recognised international accreditation initiative that acknowledges excellence in maintaining the highest standards of environmental management, safety, services and amenities. South Africa was the first country, outside of Europe, to introduce the Blue Flag programme, in November 2001. Blue Flag beaches in South Africa are a very real feather in our tourism cap. To achieve Blue Flag status, 33 main criteria covering four aspects of coastal management have to be met. These four aspects are water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and services. Why is it so expensive?
This got me interested in writing an article on an average clubs expenses and income. This could essentially establish a better understanding on why memberships or non-affiliated players pay what they do when they join a club, or simply play a round of golf. There are many different sectors that contribute towards enhancing the capital growth of the club, and influence the clubs capital expenses.

A friend of mine recently invited me to play a game of golf, now believe it or not this is not something that I often do. It’s not that I don’t enjoy the game, it’s more a matter of not having enough spare time to play, and the idea of spending my free-time in the same environment as my work, isn’t particularly appealing. Fortunately, by working in the industry, many golf clubs offer me and fellow club managers a discounted rate to play at their course, call it an industry perk if you would. So, should I want to play every now and then, this helps out financially. However, my friend is not quite as fortunate, especially since he is non-affiliated. So his round of golf for R 400, the share of

In any given club, you get self-sustainable and reliant sectors. So by saying this, I mean that if there is no return on investment, the sector would be considered reliant on other sectors income to sustain itself. Even though the sector might be reliant on others, it is still a necessary part of a functioning club, to add value to the self-sustainable sectors. Sectors are: • Food & Beverages (Self sustainable) • Marketing (Reliant) • Pros hop (Self sustainable/reliant) • Maintenance (Reliant) • Salaries • Golf course (Self sustainable/ reliant)
Main expenses Food and Beverages:
The club needs to ensure that it has the required trading licenses and health and safety certificates, and that they are continually updated and renewed. It is a sector that

There is a need for skilled staff to work in the hygienic environment where food is being prepared, barman that are educated on pouring drinks and making coffees and a supervisor that has experience in the industry. It is a sector that can provide a large income and the return on investment has the potential to be high when properly managed. Efficient stock management is vital to ensure that there is not an overstock of perishable foods that would result in wasted capital, and to prevent an oversupply of stock that moves very slowly. There is a need to have this sector fully functioning as it can attract more feet and day visitors to the club that could result in a future membership. Clubs invest a lot of time into this sector due to the high demand on beverages and food and thus the total turnover in this section is one of the highest.
Advertising/Marketing:
Let’s face it. The golfing industry is a pretty saturated market, and it requires a very proficient advertising and marketing sector to help a club stand out above the rest. Golf courses now utilise a variety of marketing strategies, from incorporating social media (Facebook and twitter), straight through to online advertising and more traditional marketing channels like newspapers, banners and magazines. This sector is also responsible for marketing specials or upcoming events and for ensuring that the website remains up to date and relevant. How the club is portrayed in the golfing world is a pretty big deal and responsibility. This section is the driving force behind membership specials and the fun interactive events like wine tastings and family fun days. It often gets overseen by the public but it forms part of the foundation of any club.

Playing the middle man between the client

and golf course can be rather tricky at times. Managing 140 players with golf carts included can take a lot of patience and experience, especially when it comes to corporate events. The Pro shop usually consists of the Golf Director, three or four assistants working in the shop to assist in organising and running the shop per club standards, a caddy master/caddies and 2-3 marshals. This section is responsible for bookings (individual/corporate) of golf days, sales (merchandising), golf cart bookings/maintenance and planning, caddies, dress code/ rules and so much more. It creates an exciting golf experience before the player even puts a foot on the course, and this can be challenging.
Clubhouse maintenance and upgrades
This section functions like the mechanical parts of a robot; the club simply cannot function if appliances, electrical problems, sewerage and water and general maintenance like painting and so forth don’t exist. Making sure that every aspect in and around the clubhouse functions per club standards is vital for attracting recurring clients. This section usually consists of a maintenance manager and 2 to 3 staff assisting the manager.
Staff
Staff, the heart, body and mind of the club! This section in the club does not get seen as a “section” per se but indirectly functions as a section because of its high monthly expenses. Total staff within the average sized club is not always the same because individual clubs have different needs that need to be met on a daily to monthly basis. For instance, some clubs need to maintain other sporting facilities such a bowling greens and cricket fields, where some courses can also cater to functions such as weddings and this sort of thing will determine an individual clubs staff requirement.

This average size structure can vary depending on the club’s needs. Extra sections like a spa or gym facility can be added to a club where relevant. A High staff salary turnover causes this sector to fall under the blanket as one of the largest expenses incurred by a club.
Golf course
Taking into consideration that an average of 40 ha needs to be maintained daily, it’s not surprising to note that this section is usually the highest expense at any given club. There is a variety of equipment and practices that form part of the maintenance program within this section. The cost incurred with reshaping bunkers, dealing with mechanical breakdowns of machines and purchasing the necessary consumables such as chemicals, bulk fertilisers and sand/top dressing, all results in major/costly capital expenses. There are a few aspects, relating to this sector, that can greatly affect the club in a financial sense. Many of them you may be familiar with, yet it might surprise you just how much money is required to either purchase or perform them: • Hollow tining (cultural practices) • Machines • Chemicals • Fertilizer
Hollow tining
This maintenance procedure that is done usually once a year can easily set the club back R 80 000 to R 100 000 per hollow tine. This amount will then include the tining, interceding, sand and fertilizer. High-end clubs or those clubs implementing the ideal situation, would look at hollow tining two times in a season, thus it would cost double that amount.
Machines
This is probably the single most expensive

sector. Think of your car that starts giving you more and more problems as soon as it gets older, the same happens with the golf course machines. One fairway machine can easily set you back by a million rand, I know, right? The Average lifespan of a unit before it starts giving major problems is around 5 years depending on its hours worked. If you thought the machines were expensive, the actual machine parts are equally as expensive, if not more. The problem with the machine parts is that most of the parts can only be imported thus resulting in the dollar exchange rate affecting the price of the parts. What makes this such an important sector is that due to the machines, and machine parts being so expensive, parts/ cash need to be on hand to ensure that the expensive machines don’t just stand unused for an extended period of time.
Chemicals
Not all chemicals are expensive but the majority are. Ranging anywhere from R 300 to R 5000 per application and there could be multiple applications during a week to only a few for the month thus very easily sending the budget down the drain. Determining what causes a breakout (fungus, insects, and weeds) will determine just how costly the application will be.
Fertilizers
When it comes to the bulk price on fertilizers (that get bought once a year for the fairway, tee boxes and rough)and consider-

Here is a table with rough figures spent in each major section mentioned above, on a
monthly basis. Please note that some Golf club’s total expenses for the month might differ to others depending on size of club and standard of the club`s needs. This table is only an indication of what each section could spend monthly, and not exact figures.
(If the clubs expenses were R 1 000 000 on a monthly basis then this would be a good indication on how much each section would spend considering only these sections)
Break down:
- Golf course R 150 000 - 300 000/p month - Food/beverages R 150 000 - 280 000/p month - Salaries R 170 000 - 270 000/p month - Pros hop R 30 000 - 80 000/p month - Maintenance R 20 000 - 50 000/p month - Advertising/marketing R 5 000 - 20 000/p month
Taking into consideration all the major capital expenses, the reason behind what club’s charge for a round of golf, a yearly membership or slightly more expensive food / beverages should be clear. It is all primarily to sustain and maintain an eco-friendly area for you to enjoy.

Clubs try to do as much as possible to keep expenses low but with a volatile economy that fluctuates daily and the Rand Dollar exchange rate, it does make it difficult for an all-out luxury industry to survive. Note: In my next article, I will discuss what clubs are doing to create more income and how “thinking out of the box” has started to become a necessity to stay afloat. Now that we have seen where most of the money goes to, I feel it is important to know what is being done to create the income needed to sustain and maintain the club.

Cool Iceland is hot stuff with visiting golfers
P
opular as a short-break destination, Iceland is now wowing overseas golfers.
There are 65 golf courses spread around the volcanic island – 16 offering 18 holes and two with 27 holes – and golf is second only to football as its most popular sport. Foreign golfers are increasingly being attracted by its green fairways. Almost 4,000 visitors played golf in 2016, a big increase on 2015, and while half of them played only one round 27% played five or more rounds. Despite its proximity to the Arctic Circle, Iceland’s golf season lasts six months on average, and seven months in the south. Some courses near the coast can be played most of the year and there was even a golf tournament in northern city Akureyri, the world’s most northerly 18-hole golf course, in the middle of December!

Beckley bags Liberty Gauteng North Open title
P
otchefstroom’s Aubrey Beckley raised his fist and pumped the air as he boxed in a 10-footer for a birdie and victory in the Liberty Gauteng North Open at Wingate Park CC at the end of January. His eighth birdie in the final round presented Beckley with a final round score of a seven-under-par 65 and served up a one stroke victory on 14 under 274 over Malcolm Mitchell from Kloof CC, who led the second and third rounds. That crucial birdie also ended an 11-month title drought on the GolfRSA Open Amateur circuit. Beckley’s last visit to the winner’s circle came courtesy of a five-shot victory in the Sanlam Cape Province Open at Kingswood GE. “We had a very strong field in this event and to come out at the top is big plus. It is so important to back yourself going into the premier events. “I owe a debt of gratitude to the team at TuksSport Golf Academy. On behalf of all players, I’d also like to extend a huge thank you to Liberty for giving Gauteng North Golf Union such incredible support.”

Gleeson doubles up at Central Gauteng Senior Open

reg Gleeson says he doesn’t mind doing things the hard way after the Kyalami senior captured his second title in as many months at the Central Gauteng Senior Open at Ruimsig CC last month. Just three weeks ago, Gleeson staved off Gerhard Strydom and Richard Bruyns at the second play-off hole to win the Gauteng North Senior Open at Woodhill CC. On Sunday, the 54-year-old was at it again – this time against local favourite Stephen Johnston. Johnston set the first round target at his home course with a two under 70 and Gleeson was well out of contention after opening with a 75.
Gleeson fired a five-under-par 67 to set the clubhouse target at two under 142. “Stephen and Steve (Williams) both needed birdies to force a play-off,” he said. “Steve missed his birdie chance, but Stephen made his for a 72, putting me

in my second duel of the season.” Gleeson sewed up the victory when he beat Johnston with a par at the first play-off hole. “Would be nice to win the next one outright, though; these play-offs add years to your life.”

Sweet 16 Lamprecht rewrites SA Amateur history
L
ouis Oosthuizen Junior Academy prodigy Christo Lamprecht produced a career-defining performance at Humewood GC to become the youngest Sanlam South African Amateur champion in the 110 year history of premier international championship last month. At 16 years and 25 days, the Southern Cape teenager surpassed the record set by Thriston Lawrence in 2013 (16 years, two months and 23 days old) when he defeated fellow George golfer Caylum Boon 7 & 6 in the 36-final. “This is all a little unreal right now,” gushed the delighted Pinnacle Point golfer. “I got knocked out in the first round in my first SA Amateur last year and I just wanted to try and go this week. Now I am the winner and the youngest champion, too. I didn’t know about the record. I can’t even describe how I feel; it’s like shock and joy and a whole bunch of stuff mixed up. This is huge, really huge.” Lamprecht showed maturity beyond his years and the composure of a true champion as he plotted his way into the final, never trailing in a single match after he qualified for the match play stage.

He knocked out Loris Schuepbah from Switzerland in round one, Andre Nel in the second round and Garrick Higgo in round three, as well as in Thursday’s quarter-final victory against Yashas Chandra from the Indian Golf Union’s Gentlemen Squad and the semi-final win against Dylan Kok. The final match against Boon was no different, as he executed a proven game plan to take control. “My game plan in all my matches was to keep the ball in play and to try to take the lead as early as possible,” said Lamprecht. The young golfer had a hard time containing his smile as he battled to lift the 45kg trophy. “I just hoped to gain some good experience this week and if I did well, it would have been a bonus,” he said. “It’s incredible to thin that my name is going on this trophy. All the Major winners are there. Bobby Locke is there. Ernie Els. Retief Goosen. Trevor Immelman. Gosh, I just realised Louis (Oosthuizen) never won the Sanlam SA Amateur. I hope he is really proud of me.”

Edgar Catherine wins the South African Stroke Play Championship
T
he prestigious South African Stroke Play Championship trophy is back in French hands after Edgar Catherine triumphed at Kingswood GE last month. Just two years after France celebrated their first champion in the premier international amateur championship, the 18-year-old from the South of France overcame his ‘Kingswood demons’ to march to a two stroke victory on 11 under 269. Catherine also became the third successive international winner when he followed last year’s champion Jack Hume from Ireland into the winner’s circle. In 2015, Ugo Coussaud showed some real French flair to hold off South Africa’s Rupert Kaminski in the final round at Port Elizabeth GC and it wasn’t much different for Catherine.

The Golf d’Aix en Province golfer travelled to Kingswood in 2013 as a member of the French team that competed in the Ten Nations Cup. At the end of a tough week, the 14-year-old finished stone last in the field of 36 players. One certainly appreciate his apprehension at facing to the links-style Garden Route layout in this year’s championship, however, he produced rounds of 66, 68 and 65 at the par-70 layout to start the final round just one shot shy of Robin Dawson, who was eyeing an Irish double. Catherine gained the upper-hand early on after Dawson surrendered four shots at the fourth, fifth and sixth holes, but he also stumbled with back-to-back bogeys at seven and eight. The Frenchman birdied the 10th to get his challenge back on track and opened

At the par five 16th, he missed the green left, but produced a magnificent chip shot out of the valley to leave himself a two-footer for birdie. Catherine had one hand on the trophy with a three shot lead and two holes to play, but he pulled his tee shot left at 17 and had to play a blind second shot into the green. The pin was set right at the back and his approach finished on the front. He tried to close the distance, but left his first putt well short and his par putt sailed past the hole. The three-putt bogey gave Dawson a glimmer of hope, but Catherine drove the middle of the green at 18 and two-putted for the two shot win. Catherine closed with an even-par 70, and Dawson has to settle for second at nine under after a 73. Dan Brown from England closed with a 65 and Frenchman Frédéric LaCroix fired a 65 to tie for third on 272, with South Africa’s Brandon Cloete a further two strokes adrift in joint fifth after a final round 71. Cloete shared fifth with Scotland’s Liam Johnston, who signed for a 69. “I was a little nervous playing the last few holes,” said Catherine. “I know that it looks like I had control all day, but it was really tough. I hit 12 fairways, so the driver worked well and my iron play was good also, but the putter wasn’t working. “I missed a lot of chances, but at least I made the ones that counted. I really fought as hard as I could and left everything on the golf course. I played as well as I could have. Lifting this trophy means a lot to me. I lost my fear of Kingswood in the first round and I played well this week. I’m just over the moon to win this championship.”

Golfers may live longer than non-golfers
A
new study from the University of Edinburgh claims that golfers may live longer than non-golfers, and that the game has several other health and perhaps even mental benefits.
study which compared 300 818 golfers to non-golfers and discovered a 40% lower mortality rate amongst the golfers as a result of their higher weekly aerobic activity.
The study was presented at the PGAs of Europe Annual Congress in Turkey recently and which the PGA of South Africa attended as an international member.
According to the study’s authors, “Playing golf can provide moderate intensity physical activity and has overall positive associations with physical health and mental wellness, while golf may contribute to increased longevity.”
The study took into account over 300 global studies done on the relationship between golf and health, and was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. According to its findings, golfers who walk a golf course and don’t use golf carts may live as much as five years longer than non-golfers, and the regular physical activity associated with golf decreases the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, and colon and breast cancer. In particular, the study referred to a similar Swedish

More research is being done as to whether golf can decrease the risk of anxiety, depression and perhaps even dementia. “I think the message is clear that golf provides a number of benefits to society, and the improved health benefits are certainly a part of this. Too often people don’t think of golf as a sport, which it certainly is. So I’d encourage people to get out there and have fun playing golf, because it’s clearly good for you.”

Dubai commits to the future growth of golf

new entity called Falcon Golf has been established to work with Dubai’s golf stakeholders locally and internationally to maximise longterm benefits for the emirate Falcon Golf will convene all relevant parties in the industry to enhance Dubai’s golf efforts – including driving greater golf tourism, using the sport as a platform to tell Dubai’s story in overseas markets, promoting grass roots participation and managing the successful hosting of tournaments. The organisation will be Chaired by Peter Dawson, former Chief Executive of The R&A and former Secretary of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. It will work to increase knowledge about Dubai through the lens of golf, as well as boost Dubai’s reputation as one of

1. Where were you born and which schools did you attend? I was born in Adelaide (Eastern Cape) and went to Dale Junior and then onto Kingswood College for high school. 2. Which province did you first represent? OFS during my army training then Eastern Province and onto Western Province. 3. You made your South African ODI debut at the 1992 World Cup against Australia (in a game that we won) what an experience that must have been, please tell us a bit about that. It was an unbelievable experience, our 1st World Cup and up against the Aussies. There was no pressure whatsoever, we just got out there and did what we came there to do. We had a good side and new we could go all the way. 4. At that same World Cup you then took 4/11 against the West Indies (including Brian Lara’s scalp) in a man of the match performance and SA were looking really well placed in the tournament, only for us to lose in the semi-finals against England under highly controversial circumstances. What was the mood like in the camp after that game?

It was heart breaking; having done as well as we did, unexpected by the rest of the world that we would make it in our 1st international tournament 5. You made your test debut a month or so later against the West Indies in Bridgetown, Barbados and if memory serves me correct there were some premature celebrations, what are your memories of that match? Myself, Alan Donald and Richard Snell decided to go and have a Carib Larger or 4 the night before the 5th day, only to be picked up by our coach (Mike Procter) & manager (Allan Jordan) who told us to rather celebrate the following evening after the test match, so we jumped into the coaches car, BUT, before that, I arranged a band at the Carib Beach Bar for after the test and a case of Champaign for the dressing room. Well, we all know what happened that next day. A test match we should have NEVER lost, having dominated the 1st four days – BUT, then the storm came along with Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Welsh, they bowled an unbroken spell of bowling and bowled us out, I had to cancel the after party and sent the case of Champaign back!

At the Wanderers against India you received a nasty delivery from Javagal Srinath that struck you in the eye and ended up with you being stretchered off the field. Taking this into account and considering the Phillip Hughes tragedy would you say that the game could be made safer? It was my own fault, I was keen and loved the hook and pull, took anyone one, my grill was open too wide, missed the ball and it went straight in. I had to have laser treatment for a few months after that. All was good from the Indians; most of them came to visit me in hospital after the test match.

When did you start playing golf? I was a very late starter; love it and enjoying it very much.

Where do you play out of? I’m not a member anywhere; nobody wants me……Jokes. I was a country member some years ago, but with all the travels, I’ve yet to join a club again.

Which is your favourite golf course and why? I love Windermere in Cumbria, UK, just an unbelievable setting and surroundings. I have played on most of the courses in Cape Town and enjoy them all.

I did a coaching stint in India (Jaipur, Rajasthan) for 5 years. Started off being the Director of Cricket for the Jaipur Cricket Academy for 3 years. Then I was approached by the Rajasthan Cricket Association to be the Head Bowling coach, we were successful in the 4 day competition and won the trophy, I then became head coach the following season – I still consult around SA and Dubai, and do some private coaching from time to time.

Our mystery golfer was born on January 29th 1923 in Fort Worth, Texas. He started in golf at age seven. His father was the club professional at Houston’s River Oaks Country Club and a runner-up at the U.S. Open in 1920. He turned professional at age 17 and then served four years in the Marines during World War II. He first rose to fame with two victories in the 1951 Ryder Cup and was subsequently selected for the 1953, 1955, 1957, and 1959 teams, serving as playing captain in 1957. He won16 PGA Tour events in his career, which included two majors in 1956 (The Masters & The PGA Championship). Our Masters winner shares his permanent locker at Augusta National Golf Club with Tiger Woods. He was the fifth recipient of the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2000. In recent years, he has coached several current PGA Tour stars, including Phil Mickelson, in putting. Answer on page 80

BOOST FOR GOLF IN KENT AS THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS TO ROYAL ST GEORGE’S IN 2020 The recent R&A announcement that The Open Championship will be played at Royal St George’s Golf Club in 2020 represents a huge boost for Kent, one of England’s premier golfing destinations. 74

n the build-up to the 149th staging of The Open Championship, the golfing world will turn its attention on Royal St George’s – also known simply as Sandwich – as well as the many other fine golf courses in Kent, putting the county in the media spotlight. The Open Championship will return to the county after an absence of nine years; its last staging, also at Sandwich, was in 2011 when it was won by former Ryder Cup captain, Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland. Royal St George’s, recognised as one of the top 10 golf courses in England, remains the only course in southern England to feature on The Open Championship roster. “Royal St George’s is honoured to be chosen to host The Open Championship once again and it will be a fantastic opportunity to show the world what a tremendous golf offering Kent has in terms of top quality courses, excellent accommodation and a range of historic and cultural off-course attractions,” commented Tim Checketts, Secretary at Royal St George’s. The Open Championship has a longstanding association with Kent. When it returns in three years’ time, it will mark the 18th time that the county has hosted the tournament. Indeed 2020 will be the 15th occasion that Royal St George’s has staged the event, with the first time dating back to 1894. Neighbouring Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club, another of England’s most revered championship links, was the venue for The Open in 1909

and 1920 whilst Prince’s Golf Club, adjacent to Sandwich, hosted the tournament in 1932 when it was won by Gene Sarazen. The east coast of the county is also the location of another championship links gem at Littlestone and the challenging clifftop course at North Foreland, both of which have hosted Final Open Qualifying events for The Open Championship as recently as 2011. Kent also has an abundance of highly-regarded inland courses such as the two downland layouts at London Golf Club that were designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus. In Edenbridge, Hever Castle Golf Club offers 27 holes in picturesque parkland, with its very own ‘Amen Corner’ from the 11th to the 13th of the championship course made up of the King’s and Queen’s nines. Not far away in Lenham, an exquisite nine holes at Leeds Castle Golf Club overlooks what is said to be ‘the loveliest castle in the world’. In addition Pentland Golf’s downland courses at Boughton and Etchinghill are built on typical Kent terrain. Boughton, near Canterbury, has taken advantage of the county’s naturally undulating landscape whilst with Etchinghill, close to Folkestone has been expertly carved out of the hillside overlooking the Elham Valley. Something Funny! Mulligan
U.S. citizen is vacationing on his own in Ireland. He decides to play a round of golf and is paired with three local gents. He takes a few practice swings, steps up to the first tee, and proceeds to hook the ball out of bounds. He shakes his head, reaches in his pocket, and re-tees another ball. He tells his playing partners that he is taking a Mulligan. He pounds one down the center of the fairway about 280 yards out. With a big smile, he asks the others “In the U.S., we call that a Mulligan; was wondering what you called it here in Ireland.” After a moment of silence, one of the locals replies, “Hitting three.”

A married couple played golf together everyday. One day the man and his wife were on the first tee of their local course. He was on the white tee and she was waiting in front of him by the ladies tee. He teed off and caught the ball perfectly; unfortunately it hit his wife smack in the back of the head killing her instantly. She fell face down on the tee, didn’t know what hit her. They had an inquest on the wife’s death, the coroner said it was clear how she died, she was killed by a golf ball, and that there was a perfect imprint of a golf ball on the back of her head. The husband said, “Yes, that was my ball.” The coroner then went on to say that he was a bit concerned to find a ball inserted up the woman’s backside, and could the husband throw some light on this? The husband said, “Oh that must have been my provisional. I wondered where it went.”

The pro asked, “Did you guys have a good game today?” The first old guy said, “Yes, I had three riders today.” The second old guy said, “I had the most riders ever. I had five.” The third old guy said, “I had seven riders, the same as last time.” The last old man said, “I beat my old record. I had 12 riders today.” After they went into the locker room, another golfer who had heard the old guys talking about their game went to the pro and said, “I’ve been playing golf for a long time and thought I knew all the terminology of the game, but what’s a rider?” The pro said, “A rider is when you hit the ball far enough to actually get in the golf cart and ride to it.”
Tripple bogey
A man and his wife are playing the 5th hole at their club when he slices his drive so far to the right it rolls into an equipment barn. He finds the ball and plans to take a drop when she says, “Let me go down to the other end of the barn and hold the door open. Then you can hit your ball through the door and back to the fairway.” He thinks this is a good idea, so she holds the door. He takes a big swing, but rather than flying through the door, the ball hits her in the head and kills her. A year later, the same man and his friends are playing the same hole when he again slices the ball into the shed. He finds it and plans to take an unplayable lie when one of his mates says, “Let me go down to the other end of the barn and hold the door open.
