WINNING LETTER To the Editor I recently read an article that said that today’s youngsters “the millennials” as they are known regard the whole golf experience more as a visit to the driving range or 9-holes rather than the traditional 18-holes of golf. Interestingly it said that although they are taking fewer lessons they are inclined to practice more and that they regard sticking to the rules and dressing up as integral parts of the experience.

Rory McIlroy to play in 2017 SA Open Rory McIlroy has made good on his promise to Ernie Els and will be playing in the 2017 BMW SA Open Championship proudly hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni at Glendower GC in January. The Big Easy, who is the player-host of the second oldest national open championship in world golf, extracted the commitment when the South African played in the 2014 Irish Open, which is hosted by McIlroy’s Foundation. Els said he was thrilled that McIlroy had kept his word. “Rory was very serious about coming to South Africa when I told him he ‘owed me one’ at the Irish Open,” quipped Els, “and I’m glad that he made the commitment so soon. His presence will help the growth of the SA

Open which has been doing so well over the last few years.” The newly crowned 2016 FedEx Cup champion spent a few weeks in South Africa soon after he turned professional back in 2008, during which time he played in the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek and finished in a share of third with Els at the SA Open which was played at Pearl Valley near Cape Town that year. “I can’t wait to come back to play in South Africa – it’s been a while since I was there. Ernie’s done such a great job of assembling a great field. Obviously we’re also there to support a great cause in Els for Autism,” he said.

My favourite mens golfer is definately Gary Player – not only is he one of the most successful international golfers of all time, but he also done so much for South Africa and its people.

Oh yes, in my short time of golfing I have had many. My most embarrasing moment was when I hit my ball into the bordering fairway and was lining myself up to hit it back to the hole we were busy playing when I heard a golfer shout that it was his ball. I felt so bad that I nearly ruined his game, but at least he was very nice about it. I learned a key lesson that day – mark your ball before you play, you don’t have the only white Titleist ball out there!

PGA recognizes
inspiring female professional success can inspire more women to follow a similar path in the game.
“Sally Little was one of my idols. Her and Nancy Lopez were the inspiration for me because they showed me there were women playing the game and doing well. I never wanted to play the game as a touring professional. I got more enjoyment out of teaching the game. Now I want to show people that you don’t have to only be good and elite to be allowed on the golf course and that women can enjoy the game at their level as well,” says Brett-Castle. Brett-Castle was raised in the United Kingdom and remembers her first golf coach there saying she wouldn’t go any further in learning the game unless she changed her grip.

he PGA of South Africa recognised the important role women play in golf when they named KZN professional Kate Brett-Castle as their 2016 Apprentice of the Year at their annual awards ceremony. And Brett-Castle is determined to be further inspiration for this. The former UK native and now PGA teaching professional at Kloof Country Club believes her

“For me, becoming a PGA professional was about filling a gap that’s been there all of my life. If I had found a me to help me with my coaching when I was young I would not have felt so intimidated or shy in the game. Thankfully the game now is so much more pro-active in terms of getting juniors into golf and helping them at whatever level they play the game.” Brett-Castle is also hoping to bring her unique experience of being a woman in golf to also studying the differences between men and women’s golf swings. “I’m very interested in the differences in coaching women compared with men, especially when it comes to the differences in their bodies and biomechanics and that’s something I’m studying further now.”

THE HEAD DOWN SYNDROME by Paul MacKenzie Programme Director and Head Coach at TGSE Cape Town
Have you ever been told by a well-meaning playing partner to “KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN”? Well that well-meaning ex golf buddy of yours could be contributing to your lack of distance, lack of direction, your inability to get the ball in the air and even worse that horrible back ache that you have at the end of every round.
In my over 40 years of golf (I know I look younger) I have never seen anybody manage to lift their head prior to impact or even at impact. So once you realise that it’s almost impossible to lift your head in the hitting area you can forget about it and focus on what you should allow your head to do through impact. 1.

Allow your face to follow the ball, which will take the momentum through to the target, it will extend the arms towards the target and ultimately it will take you into a much more comfortable position on completion of the follow through.
Notice in the comparison below how long Phil’s head is down which leads to the clubface going past his hands through impact to such an extent that his left hand can’t hold on. Could this be why Hendrik beat Phil on that amazing final day of The Open this year. We saw Stenson hit fairway after fairway with that trusty 3 wood of his and his long iron play was something seldom seen before. Although Mickleson is respected as having probably the best short game in the modern game his erraticism off the tee has cost him several major championships so my advice to you Phil is tighten the backswing up and get that head up earlier. So in conclusion get your head up earlier and you WILL hit longer, straighter and the best news is that your lower back will love you.
One of the best examples of correct head movement through and past impact is Hendrik Stenson the 2016 Open Champion. As you can see in the picture below Hendrik’s nose and chest are completely in sync with the club face allowing a natural release of the right side of the body and a full extension of the arm down the target line.

Another symptom of keeping your head down too long is that the hands work harder than necessary through the ball causing erratic loft, club face angle and club head speed which leads to lack of distance control and again inaccuracy. Notice how the back of Hendriks glove hand is in almost exactly the same position as it would be at address.

What makes you choose a certain golf course over another? The obvious answers are; course condition, pricing, service levels etc. Yet I know of so many golfers who wax lyrical about the meal that they always have mid-way or after the game. The fare varies greatly from club to club but whether it is the humble pie, chips & gravy, a gourmet burger or an exotic curry most clubs have a dish that keeps them coming back for more. In this feature we bring you a selection of recipes from golf courses across SA, starting off with KZN’s magnificent Cotswold Downs (who are on the cover). Enjoy and remember that even if you are not playing golf you can always pop into your local club for some delicious grub.
Wood Roasted Free Range Chicken
with lentils and smoked bacon in a red wine sauce, served with garlic mash
The Chicken • ½ a free range chicken • 1tsp lemon zest • 2 cloves of fresh garlic (chopped) • 5 leaves fresh thyme • 1 stem fresh Rosemary • 30ml virgin olive oil • Salt and pepper to taste

50g Real Butter 100ml Full Cream Milk Salt and white pepper to taste 2 tsp fresh chopped parsley.
Marinade the chicken in olive oil, garlic, thyme, rosemary, The Lentil and Bacon Ragu lemon zest, salt and pepper. Place in Ziploc bag and mari• 3 Celery Sticks (chopped) nade overnight. • 2 Carrots (chopped) • 1 Small Onion Chopped) Using a Sous-Vide machine • 200g Smoked Back Bacon sous-vide the chicken for 12 (cubed) Minutes and rest for 1 Hour • 150g Lentils (cooked soft) • 1tsp Fresh Garlic Place chicken in a metal • 50ml Merlot Red Wine frying pan and place in a • 1tsp Dried Thyme extremely hot wood fire pizza oven, roast for 6-8 minutes The Mash and baste every 2 minutes. • 200g Soft Cooking Potato

The result will be an extremely tender chicken with a crispy roasted skin In a separate pan, sauté the celery, carrots, onion and bacon. Sauté till the vegetables are al-dente and the bacon crispy, add the lentils and red wine and cook for 3-4 minutes till wine reduces. Add salt and pepper to taste. In an open pot boil (peeled) potatoes till soft, add butter, milk, salt and pepper and mash till soft and fluffy. To plate layer the ragu and mash in a large open bowl and place the wood roast chicken on top. Pour the remaining jus over the dish and enjoy.

Santa Burger This burger holds a very special place on the St Francis Links menu and has been enjoyed by many hungry along the way
The process starts off by sourcing local grass fed free-range angus cows, which we then break down into 3 select cuts for the forequarter with just the right amount of fat for the perfect juicy patty. The only other additive in all our beef patties is organic salt. The blend of 3 select cuts along with salt gives us the peace of mind that you can enjoy your burger at any temperature you wish From there it is down to sourcing the best local ingredients to finish off this master piece that has stood the test of time …without giving too much away here is the recipe for our “Famous Santa Burger”

This recipe is to make 2 delicious burgers • 2 very large burger buns • 400g good quality ground beef with around 15% fat • 2 tsp salt • 100ml of good quality smokey basting sauce (we make our own secret recipe) • 4 rashers of streaky bacon • 8-10 slices pickled jalapenos • 2 slices good cheddar cheese • 4 large onion rings • A little beer batter • Small handful lettuce (optional) • 6 slices tomato (optional) • 2 handfuls of fries
Instructions The secret to any good burger is to be cooked on a flame grill, so get the grill nice and hot. Mix the salt into the mince and leave it to stand for 1 hour, this will bring out the natural binding proteins in the meat, then divide it into 200g patties and shape them to fit the bun. (nobody likes a bun bigger than the patty) Baste the meat and grill for around 3-4 minutes on each side, this should give you a medium rare burger. Then take the patty off the grill and baste again, just for good measure, arrange the jalapenos on the patty, then layer it with the bacon and lastly the cheddar cheese, now stick it under the grill so the cheese melts over the bacon and jalapeno’s holding it all onto the patty. Deep fry the onion rings in a little batter and then hot oil until golden in colour. Cook your chips as desired or serve the burger with a nice salad on the side for a healthier alternative. Now build the burger, top with your delicious crispy onions rings, fries and we serve ours with a homemade coriander & jalapeno mayo.

1.5kg lamb neck/knuckle 100ml oil 3 bay leaves 3 cinnamon sticks 3tsp fennel seeds 2 large onions chopped 3 sprigs of curry leaves 3 tsp ginger & garlic paste 3tsp salt ½ tsp turmeric 8 tbl masala 8 even sized potatoes 6 sprigs fresh coriander (chopped dhania) 3 medium tomatoes, chopped Use water if desired

Over the last few weeks our Sunshine Tour schedule has been packed with tournaments at some of the best courses in the country. Following the Wild Coast event I flew up to Harare though for a local (ZPGA) tournament at Royal Harare Golf Club. The fact that in these trying times back home our executive committee could even rustle up a few hundred dollars as a purse would have been impressive, let alone thirty thousand of the scarce ‘USD’!
The Sunshine Tour’s Vodacom of Origins series teed off at my personal favourite course and home of my first Tour victory, Simola Country Club. The most entertaining part of this memory these days has to be my friends who Whatsapp me photos of themselves next to the past winners frames in the clubhouse whenever they pass through Knysna. My friend in this photo, Jannie Smit was actually on the bag too, which makes it even more special.
W
ith the equivalent of R65,000 on the line for a win, the event attracted all of the current Zimbabwean Sunshine Tour professionals and was a competitive affair right down to the final hole. Eventually won by Stephen Ferreira, the event itself was a huge success and has since laid the foundations for our new executive committee to grow an exciting, charitable brand within the ZPGA. Staying true to their slogan “good for golf - golf for good” the organizers raised over USD$40,000 that week for local charities! There is no doubt that this dynamic team has big plans for the future of golf in the region. Despite the obvious challenges they have already created a shift in consciousness with some of our corporate giants regarding event sponsorship, even in Zimbabwe’s darkest hour. Not much gets in the way of a passionate collective willing to build, disrupt and grow an industry - Thank you Roy Da Costa and Gary Thompson!

Built in the hills above the beautiful Southern Cape Town by developer Avril Kaschula, this Jack Nicklaus design’s views has a knack for leaving players speechless. Or in the Sunshine Tour players’ case, reaching for their phones to get the best pre-tournament Instagram post! I got off to a solid start with an opening 69, followed by a scrappy 71 to make the cut by a couple of shots. The final round brought the rain, which in my mind is always a great opportunity when chasing the leaders, as they have a lot more on the line and so for the most part play more conservatively. Not these leaders though. Justin Harding and Ockie Strydom blitzed the field that day and

Overall I was happy with the performance, as form had not really been on my side up to that week and Justin Harding’s putter is a force to be reckoned with when it catches fire. On to Humewood Golf Club in Port Elizabeth for the Sun Boardwalk Challenge sponsored by Sun International - Another one of the players’ favourite Tour stops. The weather Gods followed us from Simola but this time in the form of gale force winds up to 85km/ hr. The second round was completely called off and the event moved back to a Saturday finish, as opposed to the normal Friday final round in these 54-hole Sun International events.

Having barely made the cut on +1, due to the wind blowing half the field away that afternoon, I closed with a final round 69 to move up and share in 20th place. Ruan De Smidt flew under the radar and the “Friendly City” winds that week to claim his second win in his last three starts. Ruan and I have a great friendship on Tour, with our shared sarcastic humour playing the largest role. Having been drawn together a lot over the years and seen him save enough shots around the greens to put Phil Mickelson to shame, we have since named him “the softest hands in golf”. Ruan’s most impressive characteristic however, is that he will always be the most grounded player in world golf, no matter how many times he wins. Standing on the putting green at Simola, just a few days after he won at Ebotse another player was talking about having to withdraw from Humewood because ac-

I’ve missed each cut by just two shots and the frustrating part is that I’ve actually been playing some really good golf lately. In over ten years on Tour I have learnt that in times like these, you just have to batten down the hatches and keep believing. Next up is St Francis Links which is a course consistently in perfect condition and hosted by their forever entertaining Golf Director Jeff Claus! Having taken the weekend off to relax and recharge with family after being on the road for five weeks, I’m already getting excited to tee it up again on Thursday. As this is my last article for SA Golf Trader in 2016, I would like to share the below extract from my journey up to now in this crazy, beautiful game. Reading it always brings me perspective and so I hope that it brings something to each of you.
“For the Dreamer” Before earning my Sunshine Tour card in 2007, I worked as a bag-room attendant for two years at a golf course which hosted the Australian PGA Championship every year. My days were spent cleaning players shoes, clubs and picking up range balls. Every day through the protective gauze covering the range-cart, with my earphones plugged in, I used to watch the players hitting shots over my head as I drove around collecting balls whilst imagining myself as one of them.

I’m a journeyman pro, writing this in the hope that it reaches somebody who needs to know that it’s okay to go through rough patches, as they will pass - Also that this game isn’t easy, so it’s okay to practice for hours a day and see no results for a while, as they are still on their way - But if you really want to pursue a career in professional golf, it’s not okay to ever give up on that - So shake off the bad days, smile and keep showing up, as you never know which day this game is going to smile back at you.

SA Women’s Masters is back
W
orld Sports Promotions, in collaboration with The City of Cape Town, the Sunshine Ladies Tour and WPGA, is proud to announce the return of the prestigious South African Women’s Masters to the 2017 Sunshine Ladies Tour schedule. The SA Women’s Masters will be contested at Rondebosch Golf Club from 19-21 January. Tournament promotor Lesley Copeman of World Sports Promotions said the championship will have multi-pronged objectives to benefit the professionals, amateurs and the City of Cape Town. “We are incredibly grateful to the City of Cape Town and Cape Town Executive Mayor Patricia de Lille in particular for helping us to put one of the most prestigious championships in women’s golf back on the annual golfing calendar,” said Copeman.

“It has always been our commitment to champion South Africa’s golfers and since we successfully reinstated the SA Women’s Open in 2012, we have worked tirelessly to revive the SA Women’s Masters. “As the sponsor of the Cape Town Ladies Open since 2014, the City of Cape Town has been a key contributor in the resurgence of women’s professional golf in South Africa and we are extremely pleased to see that support extended to SA Women’s Masters. “The 2017 championship will be the second event in the Chase to the Investec Cup for Ladies series and will carry a purse of R500,000, marking it as the richest event on the Sunshine Ladies Tour. South African radio personality 1. Where were you born and which schools did you attend? I was born in the windy city of Port Elizabeth and went to Collegiate. 2. Aside from golf what other sports did you/do you take part in? I have always been a sports nut and have played pretty much all the sports out there. At school level I played provincial tennis, hockey and golf. I also swam and was part of the athletics team. 3. You started with Johannesburg based radio station Hot 91.9 FM as a sports presenter, how did you get into doing that and how are things going? When studying, I did some presenting work for Supersport at the Nedbank Golf Challenge, Gary Player invitational and the Hacker to Hero insert on the TV show Ultra Simple Golf. This is when my passion for broadcasting began. I finished my studies and moved to Joburg, where I met John Walland. John introduced me to Sasha Martinengo, Darren Scott and the Ballz Radio team where a door opened and the rest is history. 4. What’s it like working with Sasha Martinengo? Sasha is a true legend and such a professional in the broadcasting industry. I have learnt so much from him and continue to learn on a daily basis.
5. Hot 91.9 FM seems to be a very popular radio station, what would you say this is attributable to? If you were to visit the Hot 91.9fm studios you would see exactly why the station is so popular. We are honestly like a big happy family. Lloyd Madurai has created something very special at Hot91.9fm. Having so many radio legends all together in one place brings back the most wonderful memories for listeners and that’s what radio is all about at the end of the day. 6. Your nickname is Disi where does that come from? I actually get asked this all the time and I am not even sure where the nickname comes from. As far as I know, my friends started calling me Disi when I was a youngster and the name has just stuck!!! 7. Have there been any embarrassing on-air moments? Oh my gosh those happen regularly. Sasha is rather mischievous so I actually need to learn to bite my tongue and tell him nothing (jokes that will never happen). 8. I believe that you have a B Comm accounting degree?

GETTING ON TO GOLF When did you start playing golf and what levels have you achieved in the sport? I started playing golf when I was about 16 years old. I was badly injured while playing provincial hockey and ended up having to have surgery on my ankle. This is what actually sparked my interest in golf. I thought maybe the hockey should take a back seat and I should pursue golf. Yes I do. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study after school and my brother is a Charted Accountant so I decided I wanted to be a Charted Accountant too. I am thrilled to be in the industry I am in, instead of working with numbers. 9. You are married to professional golfer Jake Redman, is it tough being married to a pro-golfer considering the travel demands? It is tough, but I understand it so it isn’t an issue. I obviously miss him so much when he is away (which is pretty much all the time) but I try and go to a few events every now and then. 10. I believe that both you and Jake come from sporting families, can you elaborate on this? My dad was a Springbok hockey player and provincial cricketer. My one brother is a professional golfer and my other brother played provincial cricket. My grandfather was also a provincial cricketer and was head of South African cricket many years ago. Jake is also from a sporting family and is naturally talented in pretty much all sports too. 11. Do you have any superstitions? I actually don’t …… Sasha and I have often discussed this on air but I am not a superstitious person at all. 12. What are your future plans? I am pregnant at the moment; we are having a little boy in January so it’s all baby thoughts at the moment. In time I hope to get onto TV as a sports presenter/anchor, so that’s my goal or dream going forward.

What is your current handicap? I am playing off a 9 at the moment. I haven’t been playing enough though, need to get back into it and get my handicap down again. Where do you play out of? I am a member at Bryanston Country Club in Joburg. It’s a really beautiful course and the vibe off the course is wonderful. Which is your favourite golf course and why? I have been fortunate enough to play most of the top courses in Scotland, which were incredible, but Fancourt ranks at the top in my eyes. Which is your most trusted golf club? Definitely my driver. If the driver doesn’t work I am in trouble on the day. Do you walk or take a cart? I far prefer to walk, I don’t enjoy carts at all. I seem to take more of the beauty in when I walk and enjoy the round so much more. Your favourite golfer would be? Jake Redman, although I am still a massive Tiger Woods fan and would love to see him make a comeback and win another major or two. Have you ever had a hole-in-one? I had a hole in one on the 7th of Outeniqua at Fancourt. I had the hole in one while I was still a student and luckily my dad was there to cover the bill. What would your ideal fourball be? Me, Jake, Tiger and Roger Federer. Roger is my all-time favourite sportsman.

KwaZulu-Natal nail promotion battle at SA IPT

waZulu-Natal earned the coveted promotion in the 56th South African Inter-Provincial Championship, with an unbeaten performance at the Fish River Sun CC in late September. The 2009 champions defeated Eastern Province 6.5 – 5.5 in an epic B battle for supremacy to seal a long-awaited return to the A-Section.
Having come through the first matches unscathed, KwaZulu-Natal carried a two point advantage into the final round tussle with Eastern Province. The side quickly asserted themselves with a 2.5 – 1.5 lead in the foursomes, but it was still too early to call. The singles went right down to the wire as the men in black won four games, but Eastern Province also took four.
Gavin, who led the team brilliantly while playing his heart out, and it is not surprising that he finished fourth on the MWP list.
“It was an up-and-down battle right up until the end, but we had that little edge at the start that kept us in front,” said Curlewis. Words cannot describe how proud I am right now of this team, because it’s been a long fight back since our relegation three years ago.
“I am so proud of the spirit with which our players contested this championship. Every one fought until the last putt in every match. They never gave up and they done the KZN union incredibly proud.”

Eleonora Galletti hit back for the defending champions and beat Eugenie Clack 2-up, but Gauteng North revelled in a 5 – 4 result after Marne Clack, Larissa du Preez and Lenanda van der Watt halved the last three games. “The girls gave it everything they had and it was an incredibly tight fight to the end, especially in the last three games,” said Gauteng A manager Sheryl Matthews after the team won the A-Section with a six games points advantage. “The girls were disappointed because they really wanted to finish the championship on a high note, but on the day, Gauteng North was the stronger side and all credit to them on their performance.

Southern Cape shines at SA Women’s IPT

outhern Cape gave golf fans on the Garden Route double cause for celebration just two weeks after the Men’s team marched to the winner’s enclosure in the Premier SA IPT at the Fish River Sun when the ladies clinched the B-Section title at the 56th South African Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship in October. Just like Gauteng, who defended their A-Section title despite a final round loss, Southern Cape had laid the foundation for their success with convincing results in their first two scrimmages at Umhlali CC. The Garden Route side mowed down Western Province B 5 – 1 in their opener and pummelled KwaZulu-Natal 5 – 1 in the second round. But the team had to bow out to Free State, who took the final match 3.5 – 2.5. “We were determined to make the top draw of the B-Division in the qualifying round and to go on and bring the trophy home, so the reward is very, very sweet,” Higgs said.

“We worked incredibly hard in our preparation for this year’s championship, playing a lot of foursomes and match play to get our girls into a competitive frame of mind. “We also worked with renowned sport psychologist Maretha Claassens to toughen up on the mental side. Western Province captured the A-Section title in an unbeaten performance, while Boland blew Mpumalanga out of the water in their final round skirmish to win the B-Section promotion battle. Boland captain Jaco Spies and rest of his charges could barely contain their excitement as they watched rookie Andre Ficks close out the final game against RFJ Nel at the 18th hole. Ficks’ 1-up victory handed Boland a 9.5 – 2.5 win over Mpumalanga that not only sealed their position at the top of the log, but put a huge exclamation mark behind a worthy promotion for the side. “We finished the week without any losses and that speaks volumes about to the incredible spirit of this team,” said Spies. “The team was announced pretty late, so we only had one meeting where the guys got to know each other a little and got the team spirit going. And that team spirit carried us all the way to the finish line.” Boland got off the mark against Mpumalanga with a 2.5 – 1.5 lead in the foursomes. The skipper’s brother Philip, Paul Baatjies, Ferdi van der Merwe, Louis Moolman and siblings Anton and Robert Oosthuizen rode the momentum to a close clean sweep in the singles. Mpumalanga’s Chris Zietsman scored Mpumalanga’s lone point when he took out the captain 5 & 4. “There were no superstars on this team,” said Spies. “Every guy was committed, they stuck it out in tough times and they backed each other whenever someone ran into trouble. Today I went down pretty early, but seven other guys had my back.

Born in Fairfield, Connecticut, U.S.A. on March 3rd 1920, our mystery golfer was of Hungarian descent. He was an accountant who only took up golf in his 20’s and turned pro at the age of 29. He won 18 PGA Tour events, including three Major Championships: the 1952 and 1963 U.S. Opens and the 1968 PGA Championship (which he won at the age of 48 years and 140 days – this is still the record for the oldest winner of any Major) While other players of the day often walked around a hole and studied the green for several minutes before putting, he is remembered for not wasting any time. “Swing easy, hit hard” was his motto. He was instrumental in starting the Senior PGA Tour in the late 1970s. The exciting televised playoff victory of his and partner Roberto De Vicenzo over Tommy Bolt and Art Wall, Jr. at the Legends of Golf tournament in 1979 raised the profile of professional senior golf. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1982. He suffered a fatal heart attack in 1994 on the golf course at the Coral Ridge Country Club in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was found sitting in a golf cart under a willow tree by two club members near the 16th hole, his favorite spot on the course. Answer on page 80

Golf supply and demand trends in Central & Eastern Europe PART 1 OF 2
INTRODUCTION
It is remarkable to think that in 1985 Central & Eastern Europe (CEE) only had 10 golf courses. Now, with recognition as a growth hotspot from golf’s leading architects (see KPMG’s Golf Development Cost Survey 2014), golf in CEE serves as a very attractive extra feature within a number of touristic resorts and residential communities existing or under development in the region. The current economic climate in certain countries has allowed golf in CEE to develop and cater to both domestic and international demand. The sport’s steady growth over the past 25 years has left the region’s golf industry relatively unscathed by the global economic crisis. The CEE golf sector still offers vast potential for development. This snapshot provides an overview of current demand and supply trends in the golf industry across CEE. Please refer to the Appendix for a detailed table of statistics covering all golf markets in the region.
DEMAND
The number and membership profile of golfers in CEE is consistent with the rest of Europe. However, the region does have a larger share of junior golfers (13%) when compared to the European

average (9%). One of the major contributing factors for attracting junior golfers has been the motivational efforts made by national golf associations, along with the overall novelty of the sport in the region. Concerning the proportion of female golf participation, in KPMG’s Golf Participation Report for Europe 2016, Slovenia was in equal first place with Germany and Austria as the top European market (35% of the total). The highest proportion of junior golf participation in CEE can be found in Russia, which ranked third in
SUPPLY
Prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union, golf in CEE was played primarily in Slovenia and the Czech Republic. Since 1991, with an average growth rate of 13%, the golf market in the CEE began a period of golf course development throughout the region, reaching its first 100 courses within a span of 15 years and growing by an additional 174 courses over the past 7 years. Currently, there are 276 courses in CEE and positive changes are ongoing with the sport in the region. 50% of the region identifying growth trends in supply between 2014 and 2015. In CEE, almost two-thirds of the total golf course supply is located in the Czech Republic, Poland and

Europe with 20%. According to our survey, based on information gathered by local golf associations, CEE’s golf market is showing little signs of decline – approximately 78% of the region’s golf associations (67% in traditional European markets) indicated that their level of participation either stabilized or increased in 2015. 22% of CEE markets have, however, experienced some form of decline. The current populace participation rate in the region is 0.1%, roughly the same level as in Italy, Portugal or Cyprus. Slovakia. The Czech Republic itself is home to 38% of the region’s golf courses, while Poland and Slovakia feature 14% and 11%, respectively. However, in terms of supply, only 4 CEE nations are deemed as growing golf economies: Estonia, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia, each having one golf course per 100,000 to 300,000 inhabitants. The remaining 37% of the golf supply in this region are found primarily in Russia (10%), Hungary (5%) and Slovenia (5%), with the rest of CEE’s nations host less than 17% of the region’s supply. The majority of CEE’s nations are regarded as nascent golf markets, with an average of one golf course for over 300,000+ inhabitants each.

Based on our survey results collected from local golf associations across the region, KPMG has identified growth in the supply of golf courses and the level of demand in the region. In Poland and Estonia, for example, golfers are becoming more interested in acquiring memberships and the supply of courses is consistently on the rise. As a sign of strength, the figures demonstrate that the Czech Republic and Slovakia are now stable golf markets in CEE in terms of participation, and their number of golf courses is still growing. The Czech Republic’s golf participation is the highest in the region, and the number of golfing residential and touristic developments in the pipeline is a clear indication that this country still has the confidence of developers and investors. In the Balkans, a number of golf projects

are currently taking shape (e.g. in Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia and Montenegro). Though these nations have relatively few local golfers compared to Western Europe, these resorts are proving quite attractive to second-home owners seeking alternatives to more saturated, but also less competitively priced markets. The CEE region, with its impressive development over the years, is growing when other established European markets are either stagnant or shrinking (see our Golf Participation Report for Europe 2016). Hopefully, what we have observed in terms of the growth of pipeline developments and positive initiatives aimed at bolstering the game will result in the development of more courses. In turn, we hope this contributes to growth in the number of players in this region for years to come.
