Magical Mattes BENEFIT
By Trish hernĂĄndez Celebrating the holiday season with our pets is one of the highlights of the year as we enthusiastically add our furry best friends to our Christmas gift list. Taos offers many options and choices for choosing a pet gift from clothing to jewelry to special treats and toys.
Walmart and Tuesday Morning have full lines of pet products and gifts, but here are a few different and smaller retail choices you may want to check out. You can buy pet gifts from the following Taos businesses whom also offer gift certificates: Taos Tack located in the Albertson’s Shopping Center is stocked with items for your pets including supplies for your horses. They have a great variety of winter sweaters and coats for your pets. Blue Sky Pet & Feed Supply offers pet and horse supplies and gift certificates. Beautiful Bones Boutique on the Plaza has pet items for Christmas, handmade in the USA: Pet collars, harnesses, leashes, bandanas, cat and dog toys, treats, sweaters, T-shirts, dog jewelry for the collar, dog soap and dog/cat food dishes. Plus memorial vials and petinspired jewelry for people. Five percent of their profits are donated to Stray Hearts Animal Shelter.
Avalyn’s Paw Spa — gift certificates for dog and cat grooming, dog day care. Salazar Veterinary Clinic has gift certificates for non-emergency services.
So, how do you keep your pets warm throughout the winter.
Where does your dog or cat go when it is freezing outside and you are nice and warm inside your home? The best scenario is that your pet is enjoying the same comfort being inside with you.
Here are suggestions for providing your pet with good shelter outside. Build a straw bale house for your dog so that the entrance is protected from the cold air coming directly in. Put blankets, old pillows and even straw to make it comfortable and warm. Visit deltarescue.org/inthefield/straw-bale-doghouse for instructions. Also, visit Pennie Wardlow’s Facebook page, and consider donating to Four Corners Animal League for the purchase of straw bales and gifts for dogs left out in the cold by their owners. You can send donations to P.O. Box 1163 , Taos, NM 87571 or call (575) 741-1444. Another option to keep pets is warm is to build an igloo for both cats and dogs, filled with blankets and pillows, or build a woodpile, arranging the logs to have an opening. Place thick plastic on the ground and a blanket and cover the top of the woodpile with a waterproof tarp.

Make sure your shelters for cats offer a safe escape route from predators, the higher the better. Visit ehow.com for instructions on how to build an insulated doghouse. Styrofoam box for cats: aspcapro.org/feral Other cat shelters: petfinder.com/feral-cats/building-feral-cat-shelters or urbancatleague.org/WinterCatShelters If you are going away for the holidays, there are also options for your pet if you cannot take them with you. Their home is always the best option providing you have a responsible and loving pet sitter — one that is in your home 24/7. The next best choice is a good boarding kennel with high recommendations.

STAY WARM
(AND FASHIONABLE) THIS WINTER Holiday events like Lighting Ledoux, Bonfires on Bent Street, Christmas Eve at Taos Pueblo and torchlight parades at local ski areas are all great examples of holiday spirit in the Enchanted Circle. Being at night, during December, they also have another thing in common: it’s cold! But don’t let the weather keep you from missing out on the fun. With just a few rules to follow, anyone can stay warm while enjoying the holidays in Taos.
Here’s How: Dress in layers: Weather.com recommends wearing three layers of wicking, insulation and weather protection. Stores like Mudd-N-Flood and Taos Mountain Outfitters will know exactly what items work the best for each layer. Layers also give you some flexibility, which is a good thing when a mild winter day turns to a frozen wonderland come dusk.
________
@
________
- A wicking layer is worn next to your skin, usually long underwear or thermals (polyester fiber that moves moisture away from your skin and through the fabric so it will evaporate is best; silk works well too).
- An insulating layer serves as the middle layer and should include something like a sweater, sweatshirt, vest or pullover. This layer keeps heat in and cold out, trapping air between the fibers. Popular materials include fleece and wool.
- The protection layer is the exterior layer, which should generally include a shell and pants. This layer is your guard against the elements so it should repel water from snow, sleet or rain, and it should block the cold winter winds we sometimes get in Taos. Most shells use tightly woven fabrics with a coating or laminate.

extremity extras: Don’t forget to cover your head, hands and feet. - Wearing a hat, headband (or helmet when skiing or boarding) is a critical component of any winter outfit. Fleece neck gaiters or face masks are essential when the temperatures dip into the teens and single digits, which is not uncommon here in December. - Gloves and mittens should be waterproof and breathable. Mittens are generally warmer but don’t provide as much dexterity (consider the activity).
All VAns shoes 40% off
featurinG
- If gloves and mittens aren’t enough to keep your hands warm, keep some hand warmers in your pockets. - You should always include one pair of light- or medium-weight socks, usually made from polyester, silk, wool or nylon. Some socks have good wicking capabilities, which is good if your feet tend to perspire.
& much more...
- Depending on the activity, boots insulated with wool or synthetic linings (never cotton) are best for keeping your tootsies warm. And of course, you don’t entirely have to sacrifice style to stay warm. Many of the items included in this edition of WishBook can be grouped together for a snug and chic winter combo. Visit local stores and find out how you can stay warm in style.

GIFTS TO REEL IN THE
FISHERMAN IN yOuR LIfE

Even though the snow is on the ground and streams are freezing cold, fishing is never far from the thoughts of an avid fisherman. Some even brave the elements and go to Eagle Nest for ice fishing … that seems extreme to many of us. But a true fisherman knows every trick and angle (no pun intended) to land the big one. Most fisherman probably wouldn’t mind landing some of these gifts either.
