ORALE! GALLERY Tre and Lizzy DeCosta opened Orale! Gallery Art For The Revolution on July 2, 2016. The couple originally moved to Taos seven years ago to open Taos Tattoo & Body Piercing Gallery and, of course, helped curate the Harwood show of the same name.

“All the halls of the Harwood were ‘tattooed’ for the show,” Tre De Costa recalled proudly, noting that while they curated the show the pair realized there was basically no gallery in Taos supporting Lowrider and Lobrow art – other than Greg Moon, who does more popular culture than car culture. In addition to Lowbrow, Orale! Gallery notes it is also an alternative art space concerned with local, unconventional work, the majority of which is Hispanic, like El Moisés’ “badass folk art”; and Native work, like famed Pueblo flautist and flute maker Robert Mirabal’s multi-metal handmade jewelry in gold, silver, platinum and tufa. Orale! artists include Ed Delgare, Jenny Inge, Michael Martinez, BB McIntyre, Terra Muskrat, Anita Rodriguez, Heather Ross, Rabbit Before Horse Strickland, Tomas Vigil and Lyna Jasper Vogel.

FARAHNHEIGHT GALLERY “The stuff coming out of Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe are from some of the smartest, most sarcastic, technologically superior artists around,” Greg Moon said, referencing FaraHNHeight Gallery of Taos, which specializes among other things in Indigenous Pop. One example is artist Gregg Deal of the Paiute Tribe of Pyramid Lake, a “provocative contemporary artist-activist,” FaraHNHeight gallerist Greg Farah says, noting how Deal’s work focuses on Indigenous identity and pop culture, touching on race relations and stereotype. “I want to focus on what makes The Land of Enchantment special,” Farah says, pointing to works by R.C. Gorman, Fritz Schölder, Frank Howell, Sari Staggs, Earl Bliss, even a rare piece from a Taos Pueblo great, Pop Chalee, just a few among the many, many on display. Currently exhibiting through March is regionally acclaimed painter and “jokester” Carlos Sandoval, Farah said, referring to Sandoval’s droll wit. “His Indigenous American Series is a contemporary celebration paying homage and respect to the Native peoples; their traditions, their culture, and their lifeways. Carlos moves freely between two distinctly different cultures and has captured a style unmistakably authentic and Native, modern and American.” The artists FaraHNHeight represents are simply too numerous to list. Be sure to block out two or three days to explore these burgeoning artists strutting their stuff in Taos and beyond. WORKING TAOS ARTISTS TWO ARTISTS WHO BALANCE CREATIVITY AND THE BUSINESS OF ART

BY YVONNE PESQUERA | PHOTOS BY KATHARINE EGLI

Taos inspires individuals to shoot for their dreams. Whether it’s the light, the space, the community or the fortitude of the mountain, people who are born here or come here tend to “give it everything they’ve got.” Taos Gallery Guide recently interviewed two artists who exemplify this spirit. One artist was raised by her parents here in a hippie commune in the 1960s. The other artist found his way to Taos just a few years ago without knowing anyone. Here are their profiles, which detail what it means to be a working Taos artist reaching for the stars.

FORGE (JASON RODRIGUEZ) ARTIST / OWNER, CREATOR AND VISIONARY OF ARTAOS

I was living in Santa Fe when I decided my goal was to become a full-time artist. I grew up in New York City and believe it or not, New York City has always felt like a small town. I sought that feeling again and Taos felt just right. I moved to Taos in 2015, didn’t know anyone living here, rented a studio and started making art and networking in the Taos art community. I am an active member of the Taos Art Council Advisory Board now and have participated in numerous group shows here in town. I create art that reflects my feelings about our world – sometimes political, social, parodical, satirical. I recently created an 8-foot, fully functioning parody of the Operation board game for a New York City show. I am also using augmented reality [or AR] to create real-world artwork that uses technology to animate and transform images in real time on mobile devices. The AR mural at Ziggy’s froyo [a locally owned frozen yogurt café opening this spring or summer] is an example of things to come for Taos. Serigraphy [silk screen], one of the oldest printmaking methods, is my medium. I enjoy the long process of planning a print. Sometimes planning takes weeks, while the actual print takes hours. But I can work in almost all mediums. I have had two shows in New York City in the last year and one in planning for Beijing in 2017-18. Additionally, I saw a need and created ARTAOS, which was created as a means to help artists extend their reach by using alternative approaches in exposure in all arenas. ARTAOS has a mobile art gallery/workshop in a 20-foot box truck, hosts printmaking workshops and is starting a town-wide mural initiative. 56

GEORGIA GERSH ARTIST / OWNER OF STORE AND GALLERY, MAGPIE

I think my store and gallery, magpie, is what prompted interest in this profile. While I do consider myself an artist, my main creative project right now is magpie. The space is my canvas. Filling the shelves and walls are my brushstrokes. I reorganize regularly to create exceptional vignettes to feature the work of the 75 local artists that I represent – some established, but mostly up-and-coming. I consider myself part of the art renaissance in Taos, providing yet another venue for the limitless talent we are so fortunate to be blessed with in Taos. Personally, I play in many different mediums. I have made jewelry for 15 years, I refinish and paint furniture, I do some mixed media on wood and canvas, collage and assemblage, but my most recent creative love affair is with papier-mâché. Several years ago, I started a series titled “New Growth,” making figures coming out of trees. I like the idea of making trees out of paper. I typically create one a year or so. They seem to create themselves as a means of coping with loss, grief and desire. Mostly, they are a hopeful representation of reaching up and rooting down. The figures have always been standing, arms stretched, but the two I am currently working on are one upside down and the other bowing her head, arms crossed. I guess they are a reflection of our times. I grew up here, on the Magic Tortoise Commune about 20 miles north in the mountains. My parents, both artists, migrated here in the late ‘60s with the hippie movement – my dad from upstate New York and my mom from San Francisco. I was away for about 20 years and returned in 2011. Taos is home for me. YOU CAN FIND GEORGIA GERSH AT MAGPIE 1405 PASEO DEL PUEBLO, TAOS • (781) 248-0166 MAGPIETAOS.COM

Another Jewel IN TAOS’ TREASURE

BY YVONNE PESQUERA

The Couse-Sharp Historic Site is no musty harbinger of the past. This exciting arts destination (run by the Couse Foundation) keeps alive the relevance of the Taos Society of Artists with contemporary art exhibits, forward-looking docent tours and now the grand opening of the newly restored Joseph Henry Sharp studio on its grounds. Sharp was a founding member, along with Eanger Irving Couse, of the Taos Society of Artists in 1916. They were good friends, and the location of studios next to each other befits their camaraderie. “The opening of the Sharp studio represents the first permanent exhibition dedicated to the indomitable spirit of the artist J.H. Sharp

and the vision and compassion he shared with the world. The exhibition in the spacious two-story adobe studio he designed and built will allow visitors to stand on the site where he created some of his greatest works, read the humor and tenderness in his personal letters, be surrounded by the Native artifacts he collected and be inspired by his artistic vision,” says Davison Koenig, executive director and curator. Taos Gallery Guide had the privilege of touring the freshly renovated studio. Its full restoration – with no detail overlooked – is a testament to the quality of the artist himself. Sharp designed the freestanding adobe studio and used it from 1915 until his death in 1953. It is a gorgeous, traditional architectural gem in this region. Moreover, with an abundance of Taos light pouring in and a warm fire in the kiva, it is easy to connect to the natural essence captured in his paintings. Historic images always show Sharp formally dressed in the manner of his time: wearing a bowtie, jacket, vest and a hat – even while painting. While studio clothing may have considerably changed over the years, Sharp continues to stand as a bellwether for the professional, hardworking artist. At any given time, his studio consisted of blank canvases, props, works in progress and completed paintings hung to dry and ultimately be placed on exhibit for sale.

The press announcement states that the studio renovation and the gala opening weekend exhibition have been made possible through the generous support of The Tia Collection in Santa Fe. Additional funding was provided by the Charlie Russell Riders Foundation of Big Fork, Montana. Of the Taos Society of Artists (which also initially included Oscar E. Berninghaus, W. Herbert Dunton, Ernest L. Blumenschein and Bert G. Phillips), Sharp was the first to visit Taos in 1893. Ultimately, Sharp, Couse and the other artists formed the Taos Society of Artists to combine their individual efforts for the common good. It’s hard to appreciate today, but in those days, there were no art galleries. Therefore, unable to sell art locally, the Taos Society of Artists organized traveling exhibitions of their paintings to major cities, such as New York, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. Regardless of his background, Sharp had transformed himself into a painter of the Southwest. He used bold brushstrokes of sumptuous paint to capture the famous “Taos light” that warmly glows at this high altitude. The Taos Society of Artists laid the foundation for transforming the remote village of Taos into one of the most influential art colonies in the United States. In subsequent years leading right up to the present, Taos became an international arts center. “Responding to the light and color of Northern New Mexico,

these artists created a new American art lexicon based on the unique combination of Native American, Hispanic and Western Anglo-American cultures, set in the dramatic Taos landscape,” explains Koenig. Koenig points out that Sharp was rendered deaf at an early age, yet he possessed a courageous character and a positive disposition. Sharp quickly gained notoriety for the visual accuracy of his paintings that deftly captured the soul and humanity of his Native American models. As Sharp explained in his own words: “[I try] to present the Indian as he is … mentally as well as physically; not as ephemeral fiction has delighted to picture him, but as a human being.”

DEBBIELUJAN

SHOWING TAOS PUEBLO IN A TRUE LIGHT BY TERESA DOVALPAGE Courtesy Photo

Debbie Lujan’s photography is marked by a strong sense of depth and composition. The interactions of light and shadow evoke both movement and internal rhythm. Her photograph “Mystic Clouds,” with the distinctive Pueblo architecture against the breathtaking background of a sunset, is a visual symphony. Not surprising, since the Taos Pueblo native is a classically trained musician who often plays at the San Juan Symphony Orchestra in Durango, Colorado, and other venues. She started playing the violin when she was 8 years old and went on to study music performance at the University of New Mexico (UNM). “And yet, I have always been a visual artist,” she said. “Art has been a key part of my life for a long time.” After attending UNM, Lujan came back to Taos and opened a gallery, named Summer Rain after her father. At her business, she sells her photographs, her mother’s work and art by other Native American artists. SHAR ING, NOT SE LLING O UT

Lujan often takes part in juried shows, like the annual “Miniature Show and Sale” and the “Taos Pueblo Artist Winter Show” at the Millicent Rogers Museum. She is also a regular at the Santa Fe Indian Market, where she has won a number of awards. Her photographs have also been shown in the Native Art Market at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., where only 35 artists were accepted. “It was a great honor to be part of it,” she said. Other juried shows she has participated in recently are the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market in Phoenix, Arizona; the Native Treasures Indian Art Festival in Santa Fe; and the Autry Museum American Indian Arts Marketplace in Los Angeles, California. Her photographs, used in advertising campaigns by the town of Taos, have appeared in USA Today and other national publications. Lujan is also the co-organizer of the annual Taos Pueblo Powwow, along with Richard Archuleta and a committee. “I have a busy schedule,” she said. AN INSI DE R’ S VIE W

Her art allows Lujan to share the architectural beauty of her home. 66

“As a photographer, I want to show it in an authentic light, no pun intended,” she said. “I don’t exploit my heritage. That’s why I don’t take pictures of our kivas or our cultural or traditional activities. I’d rather focus on the landscapes I’ve been connected to since I was born.” Taos Pueblo is one of the most photographed places in the world, but what makes Lujan’s shots of it unique is the fact that she is from the community. “That also makes me very sensitive about how my home is portrayed,” she said. Being “an insider” also allows her to experience the Pueblo life in a way visitors don’t usually see. “Most tourists come during the summer for the [Taos Pueblo Powwow],” she said. “Many are surprised when my photographs show snow over the Pueblo. They don’t realize we have four seasons here.” TH E SOLIT U DE OF TH E LE NS

Lujan regards the art of photography as a solitary pursuit. “I prefer to shoot when no one is around,” she said. “There is an intimacy with the surroundings and the earth that can only be achieved in perfect solitude, when everything is silent and still.” Though she focuses on landscapes and buildings, she occasionally takes portraits on request for weddings and special occasions. “I like to capture the way people feel and look during a significant moment,” she said. INS P I R E D BY ANSE L ADAM S

Her concern for the subject matter as well as the clean lines of her compositions connect Lujan’s work to Ansel Adams – who, by the way, was an accomplished pianist. “One of his most famous photographs is ‘Winnowing Grain.’ That portrays a Pueblo woman dumping wheat over her head,” Lujan said. “I’ve been influenced by that work and love the way it captures an everyday moment in this woman’s life. That’s something to aspire to.” Though she isn’t “very much into social media” as far as her art is concerned, Lujan smiles when she discloses that she was just invited to be part of a closed Facebook group called “Inspired by Ansel Adams.” “He left quite a legacy,” she said. “And a lot of it was inspired by Taos.”
