Acancer diagnosis can be a lifechanging event — for patients and their community of support. Here, cancer patients can turn to Taos Cancer Support Services for help navigating the rough road ahead.

“I listen first. That’s my job,” said Eileen Craig, the group’s program coordinator and intake manager. “I hear what their story is — I ask a few questions. I’m a cancer survivor, too.”

Taos Cancer Support Services is a program funded by grants and donations through Holy Cross Hospital that provides cancer patients with logistical and emotional support while they undergo treatment. The group provides financial resources, helps with transportation and lodging, and connects clients to the wellness community with recommendations and rebates.

Craig, who has faced breast cancer twice in her life, said she knows how devastating and confusing the diagnosis can

be. “You have to face mortality. You face, ‘What are my priorities now?’”

Craig worked as a nurse in pediatric oncology for 40 years, delivering chemotherapy to children, and said “I can’t believe how my history — my own life — takes me to this point — to be able to sit with people as they’re going through that chaotic, tearful, frightening experience of getting cancer.”

Patients in Taos who seek medical treatment need to travel to St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe or to UNM Hospital in Albuquerque — Holy Cross does not offer cancer treatment.

“I established with an oncologist in Santa Fe. Going to Santa Fe is familiar to me. The Cancer Center is familiar to me. The drive is familiar to me,” Craig said, adding that her experience helps clients understand what to expect.

The group provides clients with $500 a year to spend on goods and services. Craig said they would like to raise that funding to

Recognizing that transportation is a major obstacle for patients, The American Cancer Society started a Road to Recovery program to pair volunteer drivers with those in treatment. Before the pandemic, the program included Taos County. Craig said she hopes the program will return soon.

Taos Cancer Support Services partners with hotels in Santa Fe and Albuquerque and helps arrange overnight stays for its clients. For food assistance, the group partners with Taos Food Coop and Super Save. It also connects clients with local massage therapists, acupuncturists, yoga instructors and more.

Jeannie Ross, director of Community Services at Holy Cross Hospital, said Taos Cancer Support Services impacts the greatest number of people in the community by connecting its clients with local services that promote healing.

“What I learned, becoming the director of this department, is the way that families are so interconnected in Taos, and that we’re really working to support family systems.

THE GROUP OFFERS

“The last group of things is emotional,” said Craig. “Sometimes, people are healing and recovering. Sometimes, people are needing to face the reality of their passing. And, because, sometimes there’s issues with families — what I want versus what my mom wants for me or my spouse wants for me,” she said as an example.

The group offers peer-to-peer counseling every Tuesday night from 4-5 p.m. at its offices at 413 Sipapu St., Taos. “People who are going through it themselves or have been through it themselves. It’s a place to encourage each other, a place to

To get the word out about their services and bring in needed funding, the group hosts several fundraisers throughout the year, including the annual Paint Taos Pink event, a partnership with local eateries. “This year was a great success. We are at $30,000 and counting,” Craig said.

Another annual fundraiser is the For the Health of It 3-mile walk around Kit

Carson Park. Craig said about 20 volunteers contributed to the cause last year. “I do get people calling or coming in that say, ‘How can I help? What can I do?’”

Taos Cancer Support Services recently enlisted its clients and their families to record about a dozen radio spots. One of them submitted: “I’m Julia Bergkamp. My mom was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer about a year-and-a-half ago, and our family and myself really benefited from Cancer Support Services.

“Being a caregiver is a lot, and it can feel really isolating and lonely at times. And so, actually, I really benefited from the services. Most of all, they provided me with ongoing check-ins. They connected me to support groups, gas cards, community resources and simply just a connection in knowing that I didn’t have to go it alone and that I shouldn’t have to. I really benefited from the ongoing care, compassion, empathy and support that they provided me on a weekly basis.”

Worldwide Indigenous practices of birth are woven with community support, land-based practices and continuity. Traditional midwives and birth attendants center and protect the new mother, and

continuous support is given by aunties and grandmothers from conception to parenting. Special care, attention and ceremony promote the healthiest outcomes of body and spirit.

Women have always supported each other when pregnant and giving birth. Some of this traditional support system began to disappear in the 1930s and later, when medical professionals assisting birthing women in hospitals became the dominant way of giving birth in the US.

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in births assisted by midwives and doulas. Doula is a Greek term for a woman who supports a mother through childbirth, according to a 2020 report by Tewa Women United, Expanding Access to Doula Care, Birth Equity and Economic Justice in New Mexico.

The report explains “A doula provides physical, emotional, informational, and spiritual support to a birthing person and their family, at home, at a birth center or in a hospital. A doula may teach a pregnant person about childbirth and breastfeeding; offer continuous labor support and non-medical comfort measures; answer questions about common medical procedures; advocate for her client’s voice to be heard; support with breastfeeding; offer postpartum support; assess for postpartum depression; and provide referrals to community resources.”

Aspen Mirabal of Taos Pueblo has been attending births as a doula for the past five

years. She explains, “There are many different forms of doulas; some are specific to gestation, including preconception, pregnancy, postpartum, abortion, infant loss support, and others are end-of-life doulas. All cater to an individual person or family’s experience physically, spiritually and emotionally, and offer educational and communitybased resources.”

Mirabal identifies as an Indigenous birth worker, lactation educator and assistant midwife. “All these roles were created by and for Indigenous people. As a Taos Pueblo member, I feel proud to say that I’m an Indigenous birth worker.”

From a very young age, Mirabal was interested in the birth process. “My interest in midwifery first started when my second sister was born at home at Taos Pueblo. It sparked my interest in doing what the midwives did. I was four years old. Fast forward 10 years: at 14, I participated in a mini-mentorship in clinical midwifery-based care at the Northern New Mexico Birth Center. I saw the realities of midwifery.”

Mirabal changed sheets, saw one birth, and observed the heap of required paperwork. After finishing high school, she went to Guatemala and apprenticed with a traditional rural midwife. “Diving in was a bold move and I realized I needed to slow down. I saw that a midwife was in charge of

a huge responsibility. I became aware that there are doulas out there who are not in charge of the delivery of the baby.”

Back in New Mexico, she became fully certified as a doula through Tewa Women United (TWU). She explains that TWU is owned and run by Indigenous women and that the organization developed its own curriculum titled the Yiya Vi Kagingdi Doula Project that is specific to Indigenous and other multiracial people of New Mexico.

The title comes from the Tewa term for mother’s helper. “The approach caters to people’s spiritual and cultural differences,” explains Mirabal. “Being a doula in this way means being respectful and open to each client. We see differences between the pueblos but also similarities in the ways we carry ourselves.”

There are many positive outcomes of doula care documented in studies, as well as through feedback from mothers, Mirabal points out. “Doulas are responsible for lowering inductions, C-sections and com-

plications. They increase the number of unmedicated births and births with more positive birth experiences and so much more. When people do not have access to their healers and support people, those numbers go down.”

SEEING WITH NEW EYES

Mirabal recently gave birth herself. When asked if her training and experience helped with her own birth, she says, “Not at all. I’m definitely going through a real-time transformation that is changing everything I thought I knew. The experience was different than I imagined it could be.”

She plans to bring her learning to her future work, including emphasizing following the lead of the mother even more and providing for the mother-father dyad.

“There is very little done to include the papa and partners,” she says. “Dads need to be much more respected. They witness life being given. They often have to be back in the workplace almost immediately, allowing hardly any time to bond. If there could be more paid paternity leave, that would be a dream; to let people be there with their families in that experience.”

Mirabal also learned a new respect for hospital births. Although she had planned a home birth, she ended up at the hospital and realized that you can have a transformative experience in a hospital, just like at home.

BECOMING A DOULA

Mirabal encourages those who are drawn to the work to pursue it. “It means something if someone has the calling to do the work,” she says. “It is a gift or message from elsewhere. Don’t think of it lightly. There are many doulas needed in this world.”

She suggests watching YouTube birth videos that show home and hospital births, and also situations like C-sections and even the loss of the baby or mom.

“Through the videos, you can hear what birth sounds like and see the birth environment. You can’t smell or taste it or feel the warmth or chill of the room, but you can almost imagine it. The experiences that are recorded are beautiful and sometimes sad and evoke something close to what you might see in the first or second birth you attend. No two are really alike.” Even after years of experience, she watches these videos so she can continue to learn.

INDIGENOUS BIRTH SUPPORT

“Giving birth in your own community with people from your community assisting is the gold standard,” says Mirabal. She adds that such support lifts a huge barrier and adds comfort to the birth process. Those without training in the Indigenous experience may be unaware of both the community traditions and the ancestral traumas of the people and land.

The mothers she has supported have said that they appreciate the resources that Mirabal provides for them, whether it is homeopathic herbal support or referrals to traditional healers.

She also assists mothers and their families in rediscovering Indigenous-based knowledge from Taos Pueblo that had been forgotten, including birth and postpartum rituals. “Mothers say that it really helps to have a familiar person there in times of need. COVID in my community was devastating for families who were denied access in hospitals or even at home. When there was a doula there, that was the closest thing to family the mother might have gotten.”

Mirabal does not charge Indigenous people for her services. “I made a pact with myself not to take money from my own people,” she says. “I won’t turn away an Indigenous mother. If the timing aligns correctly with my availability, I will take them on and find the funding.”

BEATING THE WINTER BLUES

Many people can relate to the seasonal blues when the days are shortest and the temperatures dip. More mild than serious for most, the winter blues can have a depression-like affect and often peak during or right after the holiday season.

Even if you aren’t prone to a case of the winter blues, that does not mean you are immune to some seasonal reactions to the shorter days and colder temperatures. If you’re feeling irritable, low energy, or not as interested in social activities as usual, below are some helpful hints to help kick the winter blues to the curb.

GET OUTSIDE

The winter blues are typically associated with less sunlight. Fortunately for residents of New Mexico, including the high desert of Taos, our area averages 283 sunny days each year — nearly 50 more sunny days than the “sunshine state” of Florida. However, for those who experience a case of the ‘blahs’ or something closer to depression, exposure to sunlight will help increase your natural levels of Vitamin D, an essential nutrient that is often lacking with reduced sun exposure.

If possible, get outside, embrace the winter months by skiing, snowshoeing, hiking – anything that gets you moving. If you are unable to get outside and soak in the sun, talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist about Vitamin D and how much you should take to help balance out the lack of daylight.

YOU REALLY ARE WHAT YOU EAT

Certain foods affect the powerful moodmodifying chemicals in our brain called neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters are made from the foods we eat. When we eat healthier foods, we build healthier neurotransmitters, and are better equipped to handle the fluctuations of sunlight exposure and those days when we don’t feel as good as we’d like to.

In addition to making sure you stay hydrated; a short list of healthy foods can be found on the following page.

Good Mood Foods

• Low-fat or nonfat yogurt: foods with live bacteria cultures help your gut stay healthy.

• Nuts: powerhouses of energy, nutrients, proteins and heart-healthy fats, add nuts to your cereal, salad and serve as a small side to your meals.

• Vitamin C-rich foods: fruits and vegetables high in Vitamin C and antioxidants such as oranges, kiwi, broccoli, potatoes, peppers, berries and dark green leafy vegetables help strengthen the body.

• Fatty fish: diets high in B12 and the omega-3 fatty acids including tuna, salmon, sardines and other fatty fish help to decrease depression and improve mood.

• Dark chocolate: any chocolate with at least 70 percent cocoa will release endorphins that improve mood (but you probably already knew that!).

GET YOUR ZS AND YOUR OMS

The quality of your sleep is one of the biggest factors that affect how we feel. By committing to a regular bedtime and wakeup time that allows a quality amount of sleep, your body will establish an internal routine that helps build your natural cortisol and energy levels. Experts suggest exposing yourself to light as soon as you wake up and make sure your bedroom is cool, dark and free of electronics.

Establishing a meditation routine can also help to improve your mood. Some meditation techniques include visualizing spring or summer days where you are active and outside, enjoying the warm temperatures. These types of visualization exercises can be helpful.

We can all be at risk for the winter blues. In addition to implementing the above steps into your winter health routine, your healthcare provider can talk with you about suggestions specific to you and/or your family.

Struck by lightning

F OUR TAOSEÑOS on record have been struck by lightning and survived. In 2019, the National Weather Service estimated lightning kills roughly 20 people each year in the U.S. and injures a few hundred more, including of course, New Mexicans.

“Unfortunately, New Mexico has observed several lightning fatalities and injuries,” according to weather.gov, which states dry thunderstorms tend to be the most dangerous, since people less likely seek shelter when a storm doesn’t bring rain.

Dr. Gelain Ismail and husband Alan Mahrenholz were victims of a random dry lightning strike Aug. 2, 2022, walking their dog in El Prado. Ismail was unconscious for a few seconds and had an injured arm, but began one-armed CPR on her unconscious, lightning-burned husband, restarting his heart by the time medics arrived on scene. He was rushed to Holy Cross Medical Center in stable but serious condition.

Winter 2011, Taos artist Dirk Herrman was struck by lightning, skiing in Telluride, Colo. (see Dirk’s wife, Taos News food columnist Lucy Herrman’s just-published ‘Take Another Piece of My Heart: A Memoir’/Nighthawk Press; 2022).

“Something is happening to me,” Dirk told Lucy over the phone. He said it felt like “lightning went from my throat down through me to my lower back. The pain bent me over onto my poles. I couldn’t stand up straight.” Telluride ER confirmed an aortic dissection in Herrman, an athlete in his fifties in otherwise good health. “Left untreated,” Lucy quotes, “50 percent die in 48 hours.”

June 2007, Taos Land Trust auction volunteer Guillermo Rosette was struck by lightning and survived, according to Taos News intern Harrison Blackman’s research. “The lightning had shattered Rosette’s glasses and, more critically — Rosette had no pulse. Fortunately, a doctor and nurse were present at the auction and immediately attended to the man before he was picked up by ambulance and brought to Holy Cross Hospital.” Blackman said Rosette was released from the hospital within two hours.

Shelter and learn CPR

Lightning is the second-leading cause of weather-related deaths, after flash floods, according to National Weather Service. Our lightning-survivor accounts are proof positive we should shelter from thunder and learn Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

"Taking an hour-long CPR class is fast and free and can save a life," said Emergency Response Expert and former firefighter, David Elliot. Elliot has been teaching the Whole Community CPR Lifesaver Course for several years. He is the hospital emergency response coordinator for Holy Cross Medical Center and used to be deputy emergency manager for Taos County. He was Taos News 2021 Citizen of the Year for helping organize the county's emergency response during the pandemic.

Friday morning (Sept. 23, 2022), 15 members of the Taos News staff gathered to learn CPR, in case they might need to save someone's life. Elliot led the class and recommended all organizations teach staff how to do CPR, as well as what to do if someone is choking. Significantly, he explained there is a separate approach for performing CPR on small children and infants.

Performing CPR — the right way

CPR is a process by which a person's heart is forced to continue pumping blood throughout their body when it can no longer do so on its own. Taos News Editor John Miller noted former Holy Cross cardiologist Dr. Gelain Ismail saying CPR is one of those skills we all see performed in movies and on TV shows, but the reality is, most people who say they think they know how it's done probably don't. “There's a lot more to it than most people think, and this training really drove that home for our staff," Miller said.

Dr. Ismail said in a letter to the editor, “We will be forever grateful for the prompt response and fantastic emergency care we received, stabilizing us both and transporting us to Holy Cross Medical Center. Our final thought is please, please, learn CPR if you do not know how to perform it!”
