Where does your business come from? By Chuck Vosburgh

Do you want to make more money this year? Of course you do! It’s a new year and the best way to assure a better year is to evaluate what worked and what didn’t last year. Take a look at the jobs you did in the last 12 months and make a list. Then write down where the business came from and how much the invoice was for. Here are some categories of where your business may have come from: • Sphere of influence (people you know) • Referrals • Networking • Place of worship • Civic organization • Club or social group • Advertising • Social media Now figure out by percentage how many jobs came from each source. Then add up the dollar amount for each of the categories. Now you’ll

know what’s working and what’s not working. This year double down on the things that are working and stop the ones that aren’t Don’t waste time trying to fix things that are not productive.

Here’s an example: Referrals:

45% $23,472

Sphere of Influence: 36%

$31,704

New contacts:

18%

$39,912

Print ads:

0%

$0

Looking at this example, it looks like we need to ramp up asking for referrals, staying in touch with people we know and meeting new people. We should stop everything else we tried during the year. Among the things you’re ramping up, you can prioritize how much money, time and effort by the dollar amounts. Don’t be too swayed by the dollar amounts though, they can be deceiving. I suggest putting more weight on the number of Continued on next page

Try new things If you see something that you think may work for your business by all means give it a try! Commit to at least six months before you decide so it can have a fair chance to work. I see too many people try something for a month, see no results and quit when it takes time to get something new up and productive. After six months, evaluate and decide if it’s worth it but never take away from the things that work to try something new. What’s working for you? Call or email me and let me know!
