President’s Message
Six Baseballs! By Randy Van Duinen M.Photog. M.Artist. Cr. CPP FDPE FDAE FSA
Last month I talked about the importance of planning to make our businesses grow and I also talked about how I plan for my travel photography. I want to take a moment to tell you of a personal experience I had on my recent trip to Cuba. Prior to going to Havana, Cuba I was doing my normal planning, reading websites and watching YouTube videos and I came on this one video that showed how hard it was to get baseballs in Cuba. The presenter in the video explained that baseball was Cuba’s national sport, but it was extremely hard to get baseballs and he tried buying them in many different stores and could not. After seeing that video I decided to buy six baseballs and take them to Cuba as a way of opening doors for my photography and hopefully meet the Cuban people on a different level. What I did not expect was the reactions I would actually get by handing those baseballs out to different people. The first two baseballs I handed out was to the driver of a classic American car on our tour of Havana. Reynier could speak English about as well
as I speak Spanish which is not at all, but he was able to show us different places that he felt were important and it was a very enjoyable tour and ride in this great old American convertible car. The tour ends at the International Hotel and as we were saying our goodbyes to our driver I asked him if he had any children and he said he had two, ages 10 and 8. I already given the tip for tour, but then I pulled out two baseballs and explained they were for him and his children. The smile on his face said everything I needed to know that I had just made someone’s life a little nicer. The third baseball I gave to the person in charge of our tour. Having a conversation with him about how at baseball games if they hit a home-run or a foul ball they have to throw the balls back in the stadium because it’s so hard to get balls. Again, I asked him if he had any children and he said he had a 10-year-old boy and I pulled out the third baseball and gave it to him. He looked at me a Continued on next page

little surprised and asked if the ball was really for him and I responded you and your child. The biggest smile came across his face.
Proposed TAPPA By-Law Changes 9-11-18
The fourth and fifth baseball was a little bit more selfish on my part as we came across a plaster worker in his workspace that I really wanted to photograph with the group that I had. I asked if we could photograph and he nodded his head and I took a couple photographs. I then walked over and with the help of one of the other photographers, who could speak Spanish a little, asked if he had any children. He informed us that he did indeed have a little boy and I then pulled out the two baseballs and the look of surprise on his face I’ll never forget along with one of the biggest smiles I have ever seen. The last baseball I handed out will be the one I will never forget as long as I live. We all got back to the cruise ship terminal, wet after being soaked by rain and I looked over at a woman sitting behind a desk looking very bored and official. I walked over and asked if she had any children and she was taken aback a little by me asking this, but then my friend who could speak Spanish came over and helped and she informed us that she did have a little boy. I pulled out the last baseball and handed and handed it to her. She looked like she was about to cry. I smiled at her and she smiled back and then picked up her phone and showed me a picture of her little boy with a joyful look on her face. This was a great day! My point to this whole story is that, although I started out hoping to get some good photographs because of the baseballs, but instead I received one of the best experiences that I will never forget and all it cost me was $12 and a little initiative. Best, Randy
