President’s Message

How Is Your Year So Far? By Randy Van Duinen – M.Photog. M.Artist. Cr. CPP FDPE FDAE FSA

In addition to my architectural photography I also do a fair amount of travel photography. In order to capture images, I have found that I have to do a lot of planning in order to come away with great images. This means I spend time doing research, going through the web and finding places I want to photograph, the best times to capture an image and also what are some of the concerns or problems I’ll have in order to capture the shot. In doing this I can come back from a trip successfully with images and experiences I am proud to share with other people. Our photography businesses are very similar to my travel photography. In order to be successful we need to do our research, people can do this in many ways. Some may wish to use the web to learn photographing techniques or postprocessing. Others find it more useful to have a human experience when they learn, this is where groups like TAPPA, FPP and PPA become part of their process. No matter which way you choose it is essential you keep doing your research and learning throughout your whole career, because as we’ve seen in the past many did not make the switch from film to digital and went out of business. For me planning is very important for both my travel photography and my architectural photography business. As the saying goes “If you fail to plan you plan to fail”, and I have seen this throughout my over 30 years in the photography business. For me planning means goals, both short-term and long-term and creating a plan of

action to reach the goals that I create. Short-term goals are the ones that keep the business running day-to-day, they are daily and weekly things to do to keep the doors open on our studio. I find that long-term goals, six months, one year, two year and five-year goals are the ones that make us more successful. If you are looking to grow your business your longterm goals are the ones you need to write down and create a plan of action, so you can meet them. They are the ones that help us gauge whether our businesses and us personally are growing and becoming better or if we’re just stagnating without any real sense of where to go. Long-term goals with a plan of action can be the most powerful and successful ways of running our businesses. We are now three quarters of the way through the year, have you taken a look where you started this year and where you are now. What do you see? Best, Randy

What belongs on your business card By Chuck Vosburgh

A photographer handed me their business card. It had their name and the words Video and Photography. That’s it, no way to contact them. Useless. In the trash it went.

4

TAPPA Tribune

If you’re like most photographers, you’ve put a lot of thought into your business card. Here are some things you may not have thought of:

Make it easy to reach you Have your telepone number and email address visible and large enough for anyone to be able to read. If there are any other venues of communication you use, put them on there as well. The main purpose of a business card is to give someone your contact information.

Text reversed out of a photo is hard to read It just is. Avoid it. White text is hard to read even if the card is printed perfectly. If the registration of one of the colors is off just a tiny bit it can become illegible.

Don’t be cheap

Put your location on it

Your business card is an extension of you. The paper should be thick and feel substantial and it should be press-printed. No DIY and no free VistaPrint cards!

You may work out of your house and not want to put your home address on the card, but at least put your city so people know where you are based out of.

You get what your show

Make it quick and clear

If you have a photograph on your card, that is the kind of work you will get. If you have a wide variety of work that you offer, consider an all-text business card.

The main purpose of a business card is to make it easy for someone to have your contact information, so make sure it is simple, clear and easy to read. It is also vital to make sure the text is legible to everyone. Even older people. Test your card with people to make sure it’s legible.

Make the back uncoated One way to get your cards into people’s hands is to use them to write notes for people on the back. If the card is coated on the back the ink will smear and make a mess.

Resources for business cards are on the next page.
