Program Notes This well-known gypsy violin piece is often used as an encore. Based on the Hungarian Csårdås, the piece opens with a rhapsodic statement in D-minor which leads into a brisk Vivace showcasing the performer’s technique. A romantic interlude in the key of D-major follows, and the piece ends with a return of the Vivace section that gradually accelerates to a rousing conclusion.
Performance Notes This arrangement features a xylophone soloist, but it can also be performed on a marimba. The soloist should use soft (rubber for xylophone) mallets for the opening and switch to something a bit harder for the Vivace section at letter B. In the original version, the soloist plays at letter D. However, this arrangement moves the melody to the vibraphone. The marimba parts at letter E should approximate the sound of a single player performing a broken or rolled chord. The rolls in the bell part should be light and delicate. Also, at letter E the soloist should play directly over the nodal points of the bars to achieve as thin a sound as possible, returning to normal playing position at letter F. It is possible for one player to perform the percussion part.
