Program Notes This percussion ensemble arrangement of Harold Arlen’s Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz is based on Oetomo’s solo marimba version (also available from Tapspace). The three accompaniment parts support the soloist as if within a classical concerto setting. A trio of mallet players accompany the solo marimba part on vibraphones, glockenspiel, and a second marimba, diversifying the texture possibilities and color spectrum. The arrangement contains influences of jazz in its harmonies and quasi-improvisation, as well as classical romantic elements of runs, ornaments, and flourishes. The instrumentation highlights these influences while maintaining the simplicity of the melody and harmony of the original song. The original song was first recorded in 1938 by Judy Garland. It was then made famous through the acclaimed film, The Wizard of Oz, in 1939. This arrangement was commissioned by Louis Boldrighini and Manvel U High School Percussion Ensemble ææ and premiered at the 2015 Midwest Clinic in Chicago, IL., USA.

Although heavily embellished, keep in mind that this percussion ensemble arrangement was created with the , intention of maintaining the simplicity of the melody and harmony 3 of the original song.

4

U

Always remember that this percussion ensemble arrangement is to be played as if within a classical concerto setting. Therefore, the solo marimba part should always be ? heard parts. 3 on top of the accompanying ensemble œœ œœ 4

When performed well, this arrangement should have a great deal of expression, which can be a challenge for players when accompanying the rubato nature of the soloist. Detailed cues are provided to help œœ œœ accompaniment identify the nuance of the solo part. When (,) or (U) appears, be mindful of the solo marimba part, as it may take more time than the notated value.

œœ œ

Solo Marimba The rhythm of the melody is clearly written out on purpose. Therefore, treat every other note before, after, and in between the melody as ornaments and/or harmonies. Take some freedom within the runs and flourishes; however, maintain the overall pulse to avoid distorting the rhythm of the melody. The tenutos in runs are meant to highlight the important note(s) (usually the bass note of a harmony). Manifest tenutos by giving them a slight emphasis. The feathered beaming figures in bars 1 and 2 are only written out to indicate whether a figure is to speed up or to slow down. The number of notes played in each figuration is up to the performer. Take note of the melody among these figures (notated with stem up). Continue the lateral roll in bars 3 and 4, maintaining the same permutation of previous two bars (4-1-2-3). The horizontal arrows in bar 4 indicate the morphing of the lateral roll to a traditional roll (double vertical strokes).

Vibraphones For the most part, treat the vibraphone parts as the woodwind section of an orchestra. They are all soloists in their own right but can also be in the background (supporting the melody and harmony) and provide color.

The notes in the bowed sections do not have to be bowed for the length of the notated value, especially when there is a decrescendo (for example, bar 47). They should always follow the direction within a given phrase and approached consistently between the two vibraphone players. The “F.P.” marking in vibraphone parts indicates phrases where players are to use “flutter pedaling.” This is a feathered dampening technique in which the pedal is employed in a fast, light manner to control the amount of sustain and overtones produced by the bars. Marimba 2 & Glockenspiel Written in a chorale style, the Marimba 2 part provides low-end foundation while adding fluidity through sustain. Treat this part as the string section of an orchestra. The rhythms are specifically written to match the solo marimba part. Remember that due to the nature and physics of string instruments, the sound will always speak late. As one would play this part with very soft chorale mallets, the sound will also speak late. With this in mind, play on top of the beat and be accurate as to when to start. The Glockenspiel part provides color within the mix of the ensemble. Treat this part as the percussion section of an orchestra. Use bright sounding plastic/acetal mallets that are slightly smaller than usual (7/8”). This provides the perfect blend of brilliance and warmth.

Players and Instrumentation The ensemble version of Over the Rainbow requires 4 players with the following instrumentation: • Marimba 1 (5-octave, low C) • Marimba 2* (4.5-octave, low F) • Glockenspiel • 2 vibraphones (with bows and mallets)

Suggested Setup

*The Marimba 2 part can be performed on a standard, low A marimba using the 4.3-octave alternative provided as a separate part on the enclosed disc.
