PROGRAM NOTES Sweep Dreams offers a unique opportunity for beginning and intermediate percussionists to experience the joy of making music in an ensemble setting using everyday household items. Nonstandard “instruments” such as plastic buckets, large plastic trash cans, brooms, dust pans, and spray bottles serve as percussion equipment in this utility closet sonatina. Cleaning supplies have never been so much fun!

PERFORMANCE NOTES The performers should not be positioned too far away from one another in order to provide the optimal listening environment and to avoid missing cues. Players should take adequate time to set the stage accordingly. Dynamic markings should be strictly observed due to the inherent loudness of the “instruments,” especially during unison passages. Directors should take the necessary steps in adjusting any part, section, or dynamic to achieve clarity in performance. Letters A and B have identical forms. Each section starts with a four-bar solo performer from Bucket A followed by an identical passage played by all other bucket players. Either open doubles (“diddles”) or closed buzz rolls may be used, at the discretion of the director. However, all bucket players should use the same technique. Letters F and G are open solo sections. Each section can be repeated as many times as preferred based on the number of soloists and/or the length of their solo. Although eight-bar solos have been written out in the Bucket A (letter F) and Rubber Trash Can (letter G) parts, improvisation can work just as well and is encouraged! In fact, any confident performer in the ensemble can perform a solo on any instrument used in the piece or anything else within reason such as the floor, clapping, foot stomps, etc. Note that letter G switches to a halftime feel underneath the second solo. The regular feel returns at letter H. Play-acting is also encouraged. For example, prior to the start of the piece, the Broom A/B players can be “milling around,” lightly sweeping the floor as the other performers are entering and/or setting up the stage. Once all performers are ready, Broom A would cue the beginning by lifting the broom up high before starting the quarter note sweeps. Bear in mind, performers should always maintain the focus needed for ensemble cohesiveness. In short, encourage the players to express themselves and, above all else, have fun!

EQUIPMENT NOTES Buckets — Plastic buckets should be used; metal or aluminum buckets will be too loud. The orange 5-gallon Homer buckets from Home Depot are a great inexpensive choice. The buckets are to be placed upside down on the floor (for sitting/kneeling playing position) or on an elevated surface (for standing playing position).

Trash cans — Avoid using metal cans. Use plastic trash cans instead. The Rubbermaid Roughneck 32-galllon round trash cans are a great choice. Like the buckets, these cans are to be placed upside down for playing. They provide the bottom (or “bass”) sound for this piece and sound great using standard marching bass drum mallets. If possible, elevate the cans to provide the most bass sound. For example, rubber toilet plungers can be fashioned into “feet” for the cans by bolting three shortened plunger heads (suction cups attached to shortened shafts) to the inside of the cans, plunger side down (see Figures 1 and 2).

Brooms — Broom A should preferably be a standard upright, household broom. Broom B should ideally be a push broom. Brooms should be played on a noncarpeted floor so their bristles provide the desired “sweep” or “swish” sound effects. Since the broom handles are also used to produce sound, wooden handles are the preferred choice.

Dust pans — Metal or aluminum dust pans are suggested along with a small dust pan brush for striking. A small stick or mallet may be substituted for the dust pan brush for weight and preserving the surface of the dust pan.

Shaker bottles — Shaker bottles may be constructed by filling plastic spray bottles with various nuts, bolts, and/or washers. Experiment with varying amounts of filler material until the desired sound and volume are achieved.
