PROGRAM NOTES
Whether you interpret the walking-like tempo and grooves of Walkabout as a soundtrack for the short Australian-inspired wandering, a stroll to meet and greet folks, or just a simple walk, you will certainly “get” the title when you observe many of the performers “walking about” the ensemble to different instruments throughout the duration of the piece.
I wrote this piece as a means of exposing younger students to the concept of versatility, and I hope it gets them excited to learn all of the wonderful instruments in our percussion family. Walkabout is dedicated to Brandon Kandrack and the Norwin Middle School Percussion Ensemble from Irwin, Pennsylvania.

PERFORMANCE NOTES
As mentioned above, the intent is for most players to switch instruments at least once during the piece. However, it is possible to play the piece without switching instruments. Each player would stay on one instrument (or set of instruments) throughout.
Performing with switching/walking about:
• The players who are to switch instruments are assigned a player number (see opposite page for details). The score indicates which player plays a given instrument at a given time. Chimes, marimba 2, timpani, and percussion 1 and 2 do not switch instruments, and therefore, they are not assigned player numbers in the score.
• The included PERFORMANCE PARTS are intended to be left on the music stand at each instrument while players move around. These parts are clearly marked with a “PERFORMANCE PART” badge at the top right of every page. Every instrument/music stand gets one performance part. When a player moves to a new instrument, they find their player number in the music and begin playing at that spot in the music. Different color highlighters may be useful to highlight the different player numbers, allowing players to find their next entrance on the page more easily.
• For those who swtich instruments (players 1, 2, 4, 5, 8–11), a separate PRACTICE PART is included so that they can have all their music from different instruments in a single part.
Performing without switching (stationary):
• If you wish to perform without any performers changing instruments, simply ignore the “Player X” and “to XYZ instrument” instructions in the score and parts.
• Use the PERFORMANCE PARTS for all players, but ignore the switching instructions.
