PROGRAM NOTES

Synchronize is a high-energy marimba quartet structured around the opening bass marimba riff and the bluesy melody that follows. As the piece progresses, the players continuously add a variety of layers to the main ostinato, contributing to the music’s rapid pace. Additionally, Synchronize makes heavy use of syncopation and interlocking rhythms, creating a challenging but enjoyable experience for performers.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

• Accented notes should be played a bit louder than normal to create a greater distinction between accented and unaccented notes. This should be especially apparent in rehearsal letters D to F. Tenutos should be played as a “half-accent” (louder than an unaccented note but quieter than an accented note).

• For all players, mallet selection should aim to create an articulate sound without being aggressive.

• Rehearsal letter K to the end of the piece may be played slightly faster than notated.

• Marimba 1 and marimba 4 may share a 5-octave marimba if necessary.

PLAYERS AND INSTRUMENTATION

Synchronize requires 4 players with the following instrumentation:

Marimba 1 — 4 octave (or may share w/ M4)

Marimba 2 — 4 octave

Marimba 3 — low A

Marimba 4 — 5 octave
