United Kingdom plans to launch bio-fuel powered airport shuttles A new bio-bus is commuting tourists and locals between Bath and Bristol airport. This bio-bus is powered on food scraps and sewage and is one of its kinds. This forty seater runs completely on fuel that is generated made out of anaerobic digestion – a form of conversion of biodegradable waste into a methane-rich biogas. The bus would have been very convenient and really helpful if it was running on the numbertwo route; however, it currently services the twenty mile long A4 route that starts from the Bristol airport in North Somerset and runs through to Bath – a tourist rich city – taking a few local stops in the middle. The bus is launched by the Bath Bus Company and carries arou nd ten thousand people on a monthly basis. It had embarked on its debut journey on November 20. It can travel up to 186 miles on a full tank of biomethane. A full tank means annual waste of no more than five people. A single person’s annual waste, both flushable and edible will power the bus for about thirty-seven miles. On the ironic side, you can consider that a regular passenger on the route might in fact be propelling the bus on their own excretion. If the food that is unfit for human usage and their sewage are treated, it is able to produce enough biodegradable gas to power 8,500 houses as well as the bio-bus. The gas powered vehicles will contribute much in improving the air-quality in the cities of United Kingdom. They can even solve the global problem of carbon emissions if the technology is implemented in the developing and under-developed countries of the world. The Bristol sewage treatment works which is situated in the suburbs of Avonmouth annually treats about thirty five thousand metric tons or seventy-five million cubic meters of sewage. This facility can hence, produce about seventeen million cubic meters of biodegradable methane gas each year. This bio-bus produces about thirty percent less carbon dioxide than the usual diesel engines. The launch of the bio-bus was necessary and very timely, as it is the eighth biggest city in UK based on population statistics. UK will also become the 2015 European green capital as soon as in 2015. Besides the nightlife, street art and much architecture to see in Oxford and Cambridge, the United Kingdom will now also host green technology for tourists.
